A few days ago, The CW ordered its first pilot for the pilot season; Identity, iZombie and Jane The Virgin. Counting the spinoffs for Arrow and Supernatural, that brings the total pilots ordered so far to 5. The CW usually orders 8 to 10 pilots each year. They now have around two dozen shows left to pick from for their next pilots; all these shows were put in development earlier in the TV season.
So from all the shows above, which would you like to get ordered to Pilot next on The CW? Supposing CW orders a total of 10 pilots this year, you can pick any 5 in the poll below:

Colony sounds quite good , something different i definitely would like to see that get a pilot order
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Dorothy Must Die and Hourman. Colony, The Messengers, and Unfamous sound interesting too.
ReplyDeleteDorothy Must Die, Hourman, The Messengers, The Painted Girls, The Perfectionists,
ReplyDeleteThose 5 sound the best to me, especially The Messengers
But there are many interesting choices, but also many disappointing
I just cant believe that with that many good ideas they went with Jane the virgin and Identity :/
Voted for:
ReplyDeleteThe Revengers
Untitled Avenger Project
Untitled Albert Kim Project
Dorothy Must Die
These are the only write-ups that even seemed mildly interesting to me. This year's development crop at The CW looks pretty weak so far but it's early yet. A few of these could be diamonds in the rough. It's too early to tell.
Hourman sounds awesome.
ReplyDeleteThe Revengers, Hourman and Untitled Avenger project are the only ones that interested me.
ReplyDeletei really hope tales from the darkside
ReplyDeleteHourman, the success of smallville and arrow should prompt CW to have DC Comic character join the ranks
ReplyDeleteI don't know what people see in the Hourman idea. To me, it's seems like Tru Calling in reverse or Early Edition with visions instead of a newspaper. Either way, it's a pass for me.
ReplyDeleteReally like the sound of Badlands, The Painted Girls, Dorothy Must Die and The Messengers.
ReplyDeleteDorothy Must Die and The Messengers
ReplyDeleteand Tales from the Darkside
The Flash already has the inside track for CW's next potential DC series.
ReplyDeleteDorothy Must Die, Colony, and The Messengers all sound like they have potential.
ReplyDeleteHourman
ReplyDeleteUntitled Avengers Project
Untitled Garcia-Hartio Project
Tales from the Darkside
Untitled Albert Kim Project
Untitled Kim and Untitled Avenger projects.
ReplyDeleteThe Colony sounds decent but i don't know if it would work well on the CW.
Colony
ReplyDeleteHourman
Cross
Untitled Albert Kim Project
Untitled Garcia-Hartio project
Players
So the Supernatural spin-off isn't a next year show?
ReplyDeleteIt's already been ordered to pilot
ReplyDeleteThe messengers sounds extremly good a bit lost meets the 4400. But again seems like ahuge project. But I belive if they can pull of The100 well they can do this. Dorothy must die or DMD is the best Oz spin of in the bunch I heard from. It's an addition to the original story not the original story reDone.
ReplyDeleteBadlandsm Boots, Dorothy Must Die and The Messengers are shows I would probably follow.
ReplyDeleteI would probably check out Colony and Red too
Dorothy Must Die Untitled Avenger Project Cross ZE Untiled Albert Kim Project The Perfectionists these shows to me are interesting I will watch
ReplyDeleteOnly one really grabbed me. I laughed when I read it, I kept thinking of it when I read the other descriptions, and then I liked the idea: Dorothy Must Die
ReplyDeleteSupernatural dramas like Badlands and Messengers sound good. The Dorothy Must Die series and OZ genre have been overdone lately. First, the lackluster OZ film. Then the silly Oz episode on Supernatural. Plus, it's the upcoming storyline for Once Upon A Time. They should have gone with the pilot they had a few years ago about two female hunters driving around the States killing zombies. None of that Walking Dead survivor crap. Tales from the Darkside sounds great. I loved the old series and if done right, I would enjoy seeing a reboot. No teeny bopper series like Gossip Girl or Carrie Diaries please!!! The CW needs to move beyond crap like that.
ReplyDeleteHourman is the only one that sounds good to me so far. It's hard to say without a trailer.

ReplyDeleteColony, Cross, EXP, The Painted Girls, The Revengers, and ZE, please! All the pilots the CW has picked up this year have yet to interest me.
ReplyDeleteThe revenegrs sounds a lot like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juxTC7hYGTE
ReplyDeleteThe Messengers sounds really cool so as Dorothy Must Die and ZE... ill say pick those three
Hourman and The Revengers
ReplyDeleteColony and The Messengers
ReplyDeleteRevengers does sound like that but that would only be for the plot of the pilot. Succeeding episodes would probably be like Leverage
ReplyDelete...and that movie seems a lot like John Tucker Must Die.
ReplyDeleteI went with Dorothy Must Die, Colony, EXP, Badlands and the Untitled Garcia-Hartio Concept.
ReplyDeleteNothing really pops out to me...
ReplyDeleteTribes, Flash and izombie already have pilot orders so four or five more pilot spots are left.
ReplyDeletemy picks are unfamous , the perfectionists , dorothy must die , ZE ,colony maybe and The Revengers
reasons for picks.
- The cw has too many sci fi , fanstasy shows they need some dramas grounded in reality for budget reasons lm being realistic here .The Cw usually picks five shows out of these and the flash and Tribes are pretty much shoe in's. If the pilots were good l'd pick dorothy must die for 13 episodes only my only problem with this is that there are too many wizard of oz pilots right now if NBC picks up theirs the CW wont pick this up like the ABC situation with beauty and the beast , unfamous the show could be fun and ZE - cw normal dramas fail because they seem kind of vain looking at the reason for Gossip girl and 90210's decline they need a serious drama or at least one that deals with real world issues like switched at birth and the fosters.
Colony is a wild card because the ratings for the 100 are not in yet it could perform worse than tomorrow people .
Reign is not successful enough to warrant the painted girls.
I 'm glad l dont have to make such hard decisions although the pilots this year as a collective are not that interesting Tribes and Flash are easy pickups. If i zombie is good it will probably be picked up giving it a pilot episode means the network liked the script.
Colony and Hourman.
ReplyDeleteI chose it because it doesn't sound like a tween drama. I already know that SPN:Tribes is going to be about young people(/monsters) and romance, and that doesn't appeal to me at all.
ReplyDeleteYes, unless the actors are in their early 20s and they make "forbidden love" one of the key plot elements. No I'm not bitter about SPN:Tribes, but can we get something for adults too...
ReplyDeleteSo much depends on who they cast as the lead in Hourman, and how well his character is written.
ReplyDeleteOnly Tales of Darkside caught my interest, but it's a remake on a television era already loaded by them.
ReplyDeleteThe others sound meh, but CW approved Jane the Virgin, so we can expect anything.
I've never seen any of those, so it's new to me.
ReplyDeleteThe painted girls!!! I need another period drama in my life to compensate for me in case Reign's gone.
ReplyDeleteCW has a lot of Sci-fi or fantasy because it's the only shows that do well for them (Arrow, Supernatural, The Originals, and Vampire Diaries), all the others are doing eh (so-so), poor, or very poor. Granted, some of these are fantasy/sci-fi too, but compared to the dramas, they generally do better. A 1.0 rated sci-fi/fantasy is probably worth the expense compared to a 0.3 rated drama.
ReplyDeleteThe one about the monkey that knows karate and his human sidekick. Oh, that's not on there, Crap.
ReplyDeleteMy Picks:
ReplyDeleteColony: Offworld colony stories have great potential if they are done right and the crew are pretty good.
The Painted Girls: Successful book, easy to make and plenty of potential storylines
Tales from the Darkside: An anthology shows are unusual these days so it will draw people in and horror is very big right now.
Unfamous: The show has already been attracting some buzz and it should help draw in a slightly more mature demographic as well as their usual audience.
Ze: A bit of a wildcard but an interesting family drama with real world issues. could also help broaden their audience further.
Really not a lot that sounds very interesting, but I voted for Colony, The Cover, Red, Untitled Albert Kim project and the Untitled Garcia-Hartio project.
ReplyDeleteRight now the untitled Avenger project sounds like my favorite
ReplyDeleteHourman ( i used to love quantum leap, i really want them to come up with a decent remake, or at least something similar)
ReplyDeleteMessengers maybe, depend on how serious they take on the whole apocalypse thing
Revengers - has a lot of potential for humorous situations
Tales fro mthe dark side - yess pleaaaase. I love the original
I thought i wanted to see it too, but then i remembered what budget this show would have on CW and i am not sure it's a good idea. Too much expensive CGI to show a decent and believable Mars. The same goes for Red pilot.
ReplyDeleteBadlands sounds like a pretty badass show (THAT should be the SPN spin-off), The Cover does have an interesting ring to it (certainly better than the college-undercover thing and we don't have enough shows involving the irish mob), Hourman (clearly as something that COULD air parallel to Arrow), The Messengers because I generally like angelic/apocalyptic stuff (The Prophecy, Legion etc.) and that Rebecca Sinclair project about the 60s surfer community. Why ? Dunno...
ReplyDeletethere're two shows about Mars on there...
Exactly, i had actually thought that Badlands was the supernatural spinoff. Supernatural:Tribes sounds... :/
ReplyDeletePainted Girls,Perfectionists,Unfamous are the one the ones i want the most.I think Revengers & Star Crazy too.None of the others appeal to me.
ReplyDeletevery true.
ReplyDeleteFirst five I'd pick: Hourman, Exp, The Painted Girls, The Perfectionists and Tales From The Darkside :) But then, Red, Colony, Ze and Dorothy Must Die seem interesting to me
ReplyDeleteUNFAMOUS!
ReplyDeleteyour right but lm sensing Mark will at least go for one normal drama this year.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he will, maybe so it can be matched up with another non-sci-fi/fantasy on air.
ReplyDeleteI lost all faith in the CW last year when they dropped The Selection (which has a huge fanbase and had been in development for two years!) and picked up Star-Crossed and Reign instead.
ReplyDeletei didn't like the name either... i was "what?" In my opinion, they shouldn't have put Supernatural in the name at all, but anyway, i will watch, I love Supernatural so i'll give it a shot BUT the more I read about it, more i dislike,
ReplyDeleteCw just ordered the pilot for The Messengers, yay :)
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the pilot script for The Selection, though? Or the clips of Maxon? I've read both books and they changed all the character's personalities and looks in the show. Marlee wasn't even in it. The fandom wasn't happy about it, and wouldn't you rather wait for a *potential* movie or something than have a CW show that completely butchers your favourite characters? Also, It wasn't in development for 2 years, they shot a pilot in 2012 with Aimee Teegarden (star of Star-Crossed) but it didn't get picked up so they did a different pilot in 2013 with a whole new cast and it still wasn't picked up.
ReplyDeleteI feel a lot better about CW since I never had the slightest faith in them. Their first honcho was terrible and thought Veronica Mars was a worthy show (it became dead last in the ratings!) and their new guy is just as devoid of any sense as to what audiences want (although I give him a slight edge on his predecessor as he makes some noise trying to walk back the unabashed ageism of the alleged net).
ReplyDelete5 more pilots - 5 more flops. It's not even fun predicting CW's ratings any longer. :(
ReplyDeleteNo matter what it is, the CW will butcher it. That's what they do.
ReplyDeleteIt still holds the sad record of never having had a hit (and no renewing your own flops doesn't magically make them hits) and there is zero signs it will change next year (this year is another 0-for-infinity.)
The idea to do a spinoff of a flop (and yes, Supernatural is a flop - it's been on for many years and nobody watches it - it's like Gossip Girl with monsters - sorry fans I just offended) is just so amazingly brain-dead you wonder if they have IQ tests to work at CW and you must score below 80 to work there.
ReplyDeleteNone of those shows are worth the expense. Also demo numbers are meaningless. Advertisers as a group pay the same for all demos (I know how is this possible - PR tells us it's not so!!!!)
ReplyDeleteI'm sensing Mark Pedowitz will pick up more flops.
ReplyDeleteToo easy. He never picked up a hit. Even when he picked up a CBS reject he had to go for a Sarah Michelle Gellar vehicle which, like everything she ever touched, flopped (yes, Buffy WAS a flop in spite of what WB's excellent PR Department got journalists to write).
I actually did read the books and the script and I kind of liked it. Yes, it was very different but the basic idea was the same and I believe it could've been a great show.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I know there were two pilots but I meant they were trying to make a show out of the books for two years. One year for the first pilot and another for the second. They could've at least picked the show up for one season to see if people liked it. All that time and effort was for nothing now.
The first pilot was also very close to the books and I was actually hoping they would've picked that one up instead. Especially since some shows they picked up that year instead flopped (Emily Owens anyone?).
I thought TVD and Arrow did pretty decent?
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding? The Vampire Diaries(it's still doing well), Gossip Girl and 90210 were hits. Then last year Arrow and this year The Originals, while Supernatural is obtaining amazing ratings on its 9 season.
ReplyDeleteSo, do you call 'flops' all those series? what's wrong with you?
Like the other broadcast networks have only hits, I totally believe that (sarcasm).
please define 'flop' to me.
ReplyDeleteIt's the networks second highest rated show, has incredible overseas sales and has been successfully airing for 9+ years.
Think of the money this show is bringing in to WB due to DVD/BluRay/itunes sales alone.
And let's not talk about the mones this show is making due to syndication
A flop would be a show like Secret Cricle, that never made it overseas, doesen't have a DVD or digital release to even make money
Interesting. I haven't seen anything to do with the first pilot so I can't judge, but I'm glad they didn't pick up the second pilot from what I've seen. Oh well, we all have our own opinions :)
ReplyDeleteTrue, the world would be a very boring place if everyone shared the same opinion :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I read some reviews for the first pilot and it was very true to the books. The only major difference was that Maxon and Aspen looked different. America was even a redhead (unlike in the second pilot). However, the fact that it was so close to the books made it a little bit too slow paced. Something they tried to change in the second pilot ;)
Anyway, I really hope there comes a day when we can see these pilots or (even better) a kickass movie..!
They tried Selection twice but it didn't work out.
ReplyDeleteComing here a few days later and im surprised Unfamous is winning. What is so good about this? It sounds pretty basic to me. Is the book especially good or are there great characters or why?
ReplyDeleteWith pleasure mac. :)
ReplyDeleteA flop is a show with fewer viewers than what you should expect for a mediocre show on a comparable network (or alternately a show that fails to break even for its network - barring special arrangements like acquisitions etc).
All of CW's shows fails on both counts.
Any show on a major broadcast network that fails to get 8 million viewers when the promotion has died down is a flop (and yes I am accounting for audience fragmentation). NCIS in its 11th season is getting 18-20+ millions. CSI in its umpteenth season just got 11 million! CW is (in spite of its ridiculous ratings) a major broadcast network reaching close to 100% of households. All its shows are flops.
You define "success" by not being canceled yet (the press calls those shows "hits") but that doesn't make them successful.
We are sadly far removed from the much better time when TV executives looked for hits and killed everything that didn't work.
Nowadays, with management safely away, network executives want to pretend all is good so they can keep collecting their huge salaries. Jeff Zucker was a master of that. He took NBC from 24 million viewers to 6 million and is a multimillionaire because of the 'great job" he did... Sad but true.
You mention foreign sales, but every show that flops claims it does great abroad. Did you check? I did on a recent trip and there was no CW shows anywhere near a prime-time slot on major channels. This means that even if they sell them, they sell them for peanuts as program fodder for off hours.
Same with DVD sales. Why would they do great on DVDs when they do horribly free-to-air?
As for syndication, where and when exactly is that show airing? Not in any juicy slot of the big affiliates? Actually I don't even know where it airs, but airing of channel 235 at 2 in the morning means it's not making money.
Sorry to bust your bubble, but I guess someone had to. :)
If CW could pick up a good show, we'd know by now...
ReplyDeleteIf you redefine "pretty decent" so as to mean "slightly higher rated than the other flops of CW", then they are doing great.
ReplyDeleteThat's the sad thing about CW. Each year untold money is wasted producing shows nobody (plus or minus 2 million people) watches and then the executives renew them so they can keep their cushy jobs.
What's amazing is that CW is still alive.
My theory is that there are oodles of affiliate contracts dating from UPN and WB that would me more costly to undo than continuing to lose money with those shows.
What's sad is that there's zero reason that network couldn't have been successful by making good shows. The problem is that there are precious few exectuvies left in Hollywood who even know what a good show looks like.
Cw is a little network, you can't compare it to the big 4. There are people who don't even know that network and there are places where it isn't available. On The Cw a rating that goes up from 0.9 is considered good, while 0.9 isn't good on Abc, Cbs, Nbc and Fox.
ReplyDeleteNcis obtains like 20 milion viewers with a rating 18-49 of 3.0, it's still good, but not like Big Bang Theory, which obtains ratings of 4.5-5.0 with almost the same total viewers.
Supernatural is on its season nine, its ratings are amazing to me and also to different people who are not even fans of the show. I don't understand why you expect Cw shows to obtain higher ratings (maybe not even 2.0 would be good for you). That high expectation makes no sense, it's like expecting ratings of 2.0 from Syfy shows, not gonna happen.
Haven't you noticed how many big four newcomers show failed so far? Reign and The Tomorrow People aren't hits, but they're not total disasters like Killer Women, The Michael J. Fox Show and Sean Saves The World.
Beauty and The Beast and Nikita went bad this season, I admit that.
While The Originals is considered a hit, so far, on The Cw, even if you don't recognize it.
If Cw shows were all flops for real, it wouldn't exist anymore. Cw has shows that are doing well even worlwide: Arrow, The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, and had others that sold well: 90210, Gossip Girl and Nikita (which never was a hit on The USA, but obtained good results on other countries).
Also thank you for an interesting question. :)
ReplyDelete
