NBC singing competition “The Voice” returned on a dominant note, with the two-hour spring season-opener at a hefty 9.2 rating/14 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, this is up by six percent from the year-ago season-premiere (8.7/13 on Monday 3/25/13) and is the top-rated Monday installment of “The Voice” since 9/23/13 (also a 9.2/14). That 9.2 last September translated into 14.98 million viewers and a 5.1 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data). Welcome back, Shakira and Usher (and congrats to Mark Burnett, who knows a thing – or two or three – about producing smash hits!).
“The Blacklist,” which has proved it can stand on its own on NBC in the Monday 10 p.m. hour, followed with a dominant 6.7/11, which was its best overnight rating since the fall finale on 12/02/13. Comparably, “The Blacklist” bested the competition — “Castle” on ABC (5.8/10) and “Intelligence” on CBS (3.9/ 6) – by 16 percent and 72 percent, respectively.
Although “The Voice” topped the night, ABC and CBS both had accolades of their own. Two hours of “The Bachelor” on ABC (which also airs tonight) scored a 5.7/ 9 from 8-10 p.m., which was 15 percent below the 6.7/10 on the year-ago evening. And it led into aforementioned “Castle” at a second-place 5.8/10 at 10 p.m.
On CBS, soon-to-conclude “How I Met Your Mother” also scored a 5.7/ 9 in the overnights at 8 p.m., and it led into “2 Broke Girls” at a compatible 5.5/ 8 (#3) at 8:30 p.m. Next was “Mike & Molly” at a second-place 5.8/ 9 at 9 p.m., which was 17 percent below year-ago occupant “2 Broke Girls” (7.0/11 on 2/25/13). And it led into compatible “Mom” at a third-place 5.1/ 8 at 9:30 p.m. (which dipped by 23 percent from year-ago occupant “Mike & Molly”). The 10 p.m. hour on CBS Monday remains a weak spot care of aforementioned “Intelligence” at a last-place 3.9/ 6 in the overnights. If CBS does move forward on another spin-off from “CSI,” the long-running success of “CSI: Miami” capping off Monday should not be forgotten.
As a reminder, upcoming CBS sitcom “Friends With Better Lives” premieres after the “How I Met Your Mother” series finale on Monday, March 31.
Elsewhere, sophomore drama “The Following” on Fox has lost considerable steam, with a fourth-place 3.6/ 5 at 9 p.m. last night down by 35 percent from the 5.5/ 8 on the year-ago evening. On-the-fence lead-in “Almost Human” scored a fourth-place 4.2/ 6 at 8 p.m., which was 25 percent below year-ago occupant “Bones” (5.6/ 8 on 2/25/13).
In week two news, CW drama “Star-Cross” took a tumble, with a distant (and very last-place) 0.8/ 1 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was 27 percent below the 1.1/ 2 for its debut one week earlier. Next was a repeat of failing sophomore “Beauty and the Beast” at a 0.5/ 1 at 9 p.m.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

Let a show like this start in mid-season without any lead in was already bad and that 8 p.m. slot is really tough for any new show. It's a shame that it will probably end like Cult. But hope dies last, maybe it pulls back.
ReplyDeleteOk they occasionally watch shows like The Blacklist which is also extremely popular. Or NCIS. But really there isn't a lot of variety on TV nowadays. And of course I didn't mean all but the top rated shows tend to be comedies or reality TV.

It never really had a chance airing against those other established female oriented shows like The Bachelor, the premiere of The Voice, ABC Family dramas and the final episodes of HIMYM. Great for NBC!!! It seems like every time The Voice has a premiere it has a new record. Hope The Blacklist is in the 3's. It looks like CBS fell due to The Voice but stayed steady with each other from 8-10. What is happening to The Following?! It looks like people are finally getting tired of that show or they either took too long to come back. Monday nights are insane now, especially when DWTS, Bones, Bates Motel and TTP come. I wonder if the CW will move Star Crossed to Friday to burn off and move Whose Line to Monday to help TTP.

ReplyDeleteI think Dvr results just say if the shows are popular and if they have a chance to grow. The networks and the advertisers care more about the live ratings. Anyone can fast forward the recorded shows (people probably won't watch the commercials), and so the advertisers won't pay.

ReplyDeleteIKR. CW put a brand new show on their hardest night to get an audience at 8:00 to lead off a night into another practically new show, TTP, next month. So basically their killing two birds with one stone. I can't believe CW really thought Star Crossed was gonna do even okay against a 4.0+ Voice, a 2.0+ Bachelor, a 3.0+ HIMYM and 2BG, and a 2.0+ Bones in March. And lets not forget ABC Family dramas, VH1 reality shows and WWE Network.

ReplyDeleteIf my understanding of the system is correct, they count for something but it's not as big a thing as the live Nielsen ratings. The live ratings are what are used to set the advertising price, which brings in the money to help offset the costs until a show makes it to syndication numbers.
ReplyDeleteThe DVR ratings are mainly used to give networks an idea of the total audience of a show. For example, say a show airs and gets a .4 demo rating, but then when live+3 comes out it rises to a 1.4, followed by a rise to 1.9 with live+7. That would tell a network that the show has viewers but not in the timeslot its airing at (so if they're smart, they'll move it and try and capture as much of that 1.9 as they can).
Yeah, but at this rate I can see both of them being renewed as they are both higher than average for Fox's live action shows apart from Sleepy Hollow. We shall see how The Following fairs when Bones is its lead-in again.

And can Intelligence get any worse numbers? Hoped for better numbers for Castle. I really wonder how did BATB Rerun did, bet it might have beaten Start-Crossed. Just kidding.

the early breakdown had me super worried, AH steady at 1.6 and if it keeps up with the last weeks might adjust up to a 1.7 (fingers crossed).

ReplyDeleteHIMYM will be attracting more and more viewers as the finale is approaching and with the Voice as competition i think it will be hard for Bones to get over a 2.0 IMO. And Almost Human (1.1) beat the Following (1.0) in the A18-34 demo and in the viewership.

ReplyDeleteWhoa! The Voice had 16 mill. viewers and a 5.2 from 9:30-10:00. No wonder why The Blacklist had a 3.5 from 10-10:30. Interesting that The Following grew a million viewers in the half hours but stayed at the same demo. So basically Following lost viewers from Almost Human but grew in demo from them. Big drop off for The Blacklist in the half hours...well at least we know its renewed and can stand on its own. I wonder how CBS is gonna look in April when HIMYM is done.

ReplyDelete0.3 for repeats on fri is not great,especially when it's repeats last summer got twice that demo at least if not more and BatB would've done the same ratings.
ReplyDeleteIf you look at how m&m and Mom fell, 2BG's drop was mostly down to The Voice.

ReplyDelete0.3 isn't great? remember the 0.3 obtained by the majority of The Carrie Diaries' new episodes, and you probably haven't watched the final friday ratings 'cause the first Whose line rerun obtained a rating of 0.4, while the second got 0.5. ReplyDeletewell after HIMYM ends 2BG will lead the night so it has some importance for CBS. It will have to face the Voice either way. Like every show from 8-10 PM.
ReplyDelete3 shows i watch are doing really bad at the moment , intelligence which will obviously be cancelled which is sad as i just got back into it, almost human is getting worse although did face competition from the voice and the following which has done really bad since the second episode. I hope at least one of the three gets a renewal or hopefully both almost human and the following.

ReplyDeleteMost of the new network shoes this year have had numerous flaws (of varying degrees). I find some quite watchable, but they're just not great TV!
Air a show that is well-honed and people will find it and watch it - Genre series, Drama series, Comedy series or some hybrid.
No, the only have Monday to Friday from the affiliates, two hours each day.

Naww Almost Human is steady, it initially had 1.6 last week adjusted up 1.7. The overall viewers held pretty steady too. I hope we at least get to keep Almost Human.

ReplyDeleteI was wondering if its a cost thing, it can cost a network more to just air an original of a show than to just a air a repeat. In fact I think some shows dont air all their produced episodes simply because its cheaper not to. Perhaps its cheaper for the CW to burn off Beauty in the summer or something?

ReplyDeleteI can't figure out why the industry still continues to use Nielsen data & ratings to decide the outcome of a TV show with a random selection of people who happen to have cable. I hope that's not the case and hope that's not the case with The Following. Since Nielsen is not able to count DirecTV or Dish Network viewers (or their DVR recordings) due to satellite, these numbers must be skewed by MILLIONS!! TO THE FOX EXECS: Hope you are watching social media. Facebook, Twitter, etc., cause your fans are right there!

Bones did well in that time slot on Mondays but honestly i don't remember what other shows were in that slot but we know the outcome,they were all canceled...
ReplyDeleteWe know Kevin Reilly likes the show we also know Fox likes the Live +7 numbers.I'm hoping that since those numbers are good they do decide to renew even if its another shortened 13 ep season.That is the only thing that keeps my hopes alive..
Dude. I finally took you up on your rec. Decided to give HIMYM another chance (since I only sampled it when it first came on). Guess my taste has matured. Just blasted through the first season today (rare tuesday off, 4 day week for me) and WOW. How did I not like this the first time around? Barney is among the greatest of sitcom characters in history. Now that's HIMYM and Community you have gotten me into. Why you don't work for the U.S. TV industry is now officially beyond me. You have great schedules (I know you from TVBTN), a comprehensive knowledge of how the ratings system works. Damn son, thank you sooo much, and get your ass to the States (or Cali, if your not there already) pronto. They need you!!!
