Universal City, CA – February 5, 2014 - USA announced today that its original scripted comedy series PSYCH will end its successful run after eight seasons on Wednesday, March 26 at 9/8c. It will be followed at 10/9c by the “PSYCH After Show,” a one-hour live show featuring a Q&A with the entire cast and show creator, Steve Franks. The moderated discussion will take place in front of a studio audience in Los Angeles.

After eight extraordinary seasons that included the series’ 100th episode milestone, a two-hour musical, a 10-city college tour, five standing-room-only appearances at Comic-Con and countless tributes to the 80’s, the faux psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best friend, Burton ‘Gus’ Guster (Dule Hill), are finally closing the doors on their PSYCH office. The unconventional fan favorite series from Universal Cable Productions also stars Corbin Bernsen, Maggie Lawson, Timothy Omundson and Kirsten Nelson.

“PSYCH has made an indelible imprint on the television landscape, with a unique brand of comedy,” said Chris McCumber, President of USA Network. “The final season celebrates the iconic characters that have made this show so beloved, and will be an exclamation point on the series’ incredible run. And while the series will wrap in March somehow I don’t believe we’ve heard the last of Shawn and Gus.”

Added Jeff Wachtel, President and Chief Content Officer, NBCU Cable Entertainment, "PSYCH is one of those rare projects that broke into the cultural mainstream. Its wild energy, fearless fun and engaging characters delivered an unrivaled series that will continue to be loved by fans for as long as there are ways to watch TV."

The “PSYCH After Show” is an a interactive special featuring the stars and creator of the long-running series. Produced by Wilshire Studios, the after show will celebrate PSYCH’s eight seasons with favorite clips, audience Q&A and never-before-seen footage.

In the final season, PSYCH fans, affectionately known as “PSYCH-Os” were treated to the return of Despereaux (Cary Elwes). Additional returning guest stars include Oscar winner Mira Sorvino, Tony winner Phylicia Rashad, Kristy Swanson, Anthony Michael Hall, Tom Arnold, Billy Zane, Loretta Devine, Peggy Lipton, Ralph Macchio, Ray Wise, Lindsay Sloane, Curt Smith and Bruce Campbell.

From the introduction of the series’ emblematic pineapple in the first episode through eight seasons, the show’s stars and writers have embraced the outrageous and always silly world of Shawn and Gus. PSYCH has paid tribute to Alfred Hitchcock, staged adoring homages to the films “Clue” and “The Shining” and the TV series “Twin Peaks.” It also spawned the now-popular catch-phrases “suck it,” “wait for it,” “what???” and “delicious flavor.” Over the years, Shawn gave Gus a plethora of nicknames, including “Gus Sillypants Jackson,” “Ovaltine Jenkins” and “Magic Head,” and the show introduced the hilariously entertaining “PSYCH-Outs.” Notable actors who have guested on PSYCH also include William Shatner, Molly Ringwald, James Brolin, Christine Baranski, Jason Priestley, Jane Lynch, Tony Hale, Judd Nelson and WWE’s John Cena.

PSYCH was named the “Best Cable Television Comedy” by the People’s Choice Awards in January. Other accolades have included an Emmy nomination, as well as numerous Alma and Image Awards noms. Roday has received an Imagen Foundation Award and Hill has received seven consecutive NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series.

PSYCH has also been a hit on the second screen with more than three million fans active on social media. Half a million PSYCH-Os have played the online whodunit HashTag Killer, which garnered an Emmy nomination in the Interactive Media category, as well as honors at the Shorty Awards and the Social TV Summit. Leading into the premiere of season seven, fans stayed up all night in record numbers to participate in the socially charged PSYCH Slumber Party, which was the night’s #1 entertainment show on TV for social media mentions. These loyal fans continued their digital engagement by racking up more than 150,000 votes online to determine the ending for the show’s 100th episode.

PSYCH was one of cable’s top five series Wednesday nights in 2013 among P18-49 (1.87MM) and total viewers P2+ (4.17MM) and was among the year’s top ten Wednesday night series in P25-54 (1.86MM) and P18-34 (898,000).

The New York Times recently said “PSYCH is one of television’s most consistently smart and amusing shows.” The San Francisco Chronicle claimed "’PSYCH’ is a show that celebrates delicious dialogue and, in its way, is one of the wittiest shows on TV.” The New York Post said it was “Laugh-out-loud-until-soda-squirts-out-of-your-nose funny,” and the Chicago Tribune claimed “…this lighthearted show is escapist fun at its best” and a “breathe of fresh air.” As E! Online summed it up, “Oh PSYCH, you are so fabulous!”

Fans can catch up on season seven on DVD or iTunes. Current season eight episodes, as well as “PSYCH The Musical” are available on iTunes, VOD, Hulu and usanetwork.com.

PSYCH is executive produced by Steve Franks, Kelly Kulchak and Chris Henze, and is from Universal Cable Productions in association with Tagline Pictures. Mel Damski serves as executive producer/director. Saladin K. Patterson, Andy Berman and Todd Harthan are co-executive producers/writers. Kell Cahoon is consulting producer.

  1. I think we all sorta understand that was coming when the 8th season was a shortened one.

  2. It was heavily implied that this was going to be the final season, but I'm glad we got confirmation on it.

  3. Glad they finally confirmed it. Whilst I think Psych is a fun show I definitely haven't been enjoying the later seasons as much as the earlier ones so ending it now is for the best.

  4. I knew this was coming and even though i always believe that shows should end sooner rather than later i'm still extremely sad about this...

  5. I'm kinda glad...the show had a good, long run, but I think it slowly lost its footing and is nowadays too much about the cheap joke and not about telling an actual story. I feel that it is high time for it to come to a proper end.
I'm just sorry for the fans who wanted more.
So, USA Network. WHAT ABOUT WHITE COLLAR!!!!! We are all waiting. It's not that hard. New season, yes or no?

  6. Such a great show. Maybe we get a Shules wedding in the finale?

  7. Compared to the absolutely brilliant earlier years, the recent seasons haven't been that great to be honest. Hope the writers knew the show was ending so they could write a proper finale.

  8. Yeah, I feel the same way. In fact, there were only two episodes they did in season 6 and 7 which I really liked (the one in which Juliette and Shawn go on a retreat and the Reality Dating show one).

  9. Yeah since about S6 the quality has been dipping for me. It just run out of steam. I liked the lie detector episode as well.

  10. I think it is less that they run out of steam and more that they lost focus. With each season they concentrated more on making jokes and pop-cultural reference and less on telling a story. The rewrite they did to all the characters (Shawn being actually stupid instead of supersmart pretending to be stupid, Gus stopping to be the responsible one becoming sometimes even more childish than Shawn, Juliette's complete background and outlook on life (I really loved her trusting, quirly personality from the first seasons)) didn't help.

would they have to rewrite the finale? like Shawn is not a physic as he claim to be? I mean the episode 10 is "The breakup" would that be the best title to end series? Will Juliette be in this episode?

  12. With Psych ending and hopefully no more drama series picks up White Collar has a chance to be renewed for least two more seasons

  13. I knew it was coming, but still... It's so hard to say goodbye to the show as great as Psych.

  14. Unless USA decides to forget the Drama idea and instead concentrates on comedy series. They seem to be set on an image-change, and White Collar is the oldest "Blue Sky Drama" left - the others are all in lower season. White Collar has already been syndicated, the others haven't.
Yeah, I might be a little bit paranoid, but all the silence makes me very nervous. The last season was really great (better than the third and the fourth imho).

  15. I'm guessing they will make a decision after the finale and plus suits will air along with Sirens which leaves Covert Affairs and Graceland along unless they pair these two together

  16. The finale aired last week, which is why I am so angry. It is no fun to get a cliffhanger without the guarantee that there will be a resolution at one point.

  17. I thought for sure the guy who promotes WC would say something like. "Neal have been kidnap and no one knows it yet. Will Peter and Mozzie find Neal in time to save him" WC returns this summer on USA Network.

  18. It was obvious that it was the last season but still reading that really hurt :(

    ReplyDelete
  19. I didn't expect summer (because of Graceland) but yes - I expected at least a "White Collar will be back" promo. Instead silence....really ruined the moment for me.

  20. It's ending right not cancelled either way they had an amazing run hopefully they all get some other parts

  21. I'm assuming USA hasn't announced it bc my guess is they waiting to hear from Jeff himself on what he wants to do

    ReplyDelete
  22. Not sure why they waited until now to announce this, usually USA likes to label the final season and make a big deal out of it, especially for their bigger franchises. Makes me wonder if they were debating whether to continue.

  23. I don't even watched the show and I am annoyed how various sites are saying that the show was "cancelled".

  24. Gonna miss this show. I didnt watch it the first year it was on because I thought the premise was foolish...then second season gave in and watched a couple eps...fell in love with these 2 guys and became a fan for life.

So long, Psych. Thanks for making me laugh again and again. That's tough for TV to do these days.
