I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this show. I went in expecting a very sappy Romeo and Juliet type show, but it was nothing like that. Yes there is the start of a romance between Emery and Roman but this show seems to be focusing more on the Atarian vs. Human conflict with the romance put where it needs to be. Loved the final scenes and am actually quite excited for next week. Hope it does well in the ratings.
Okay, just finished watching the premiere episode of the new TV series "Starcrossed" mostly because it "borrowed" the name from Brenda Hiatt's just released second book in her "Starstruck" series. I knew before hand that it would also involve aliens in High School (though Hiatt's aliens are really not quite actually aliens, but no spoilers).
However, the new TV series shares another startling similarity (though little else). In both Hiatt's book and the TV series, the nickname of the heroine is "M" (perhaps it's "Em" in the TV series). Different root names, in Hiatt's books the "M" is short for "Marsha" while in the TV series the "M" (or "Em") is short for Emery. Still kind spooky.
This morning, I comment in a morning post, and knew this was a different take on the original Roswell story, which I was a fan of, but wasnt sure about the leads, one because he was too old for a high schooler and the girl because I didnt know her too much, but to be honest, I kind of like it, premises look awesome, the alien story very interesting, and eventhough Starcrossed is about the love between alien/human is not completely focusing in this aspect. Will watch a couple of more episodes to see if I will keep watching, so far its good!
I really enjoyed it and I already have a few people to make sure they watch because I know they'll like it too. I have a feeling this show will be adding a lot of music to my ipod because I liked all the songs.
Well, I enjoyed that more than I thought. It certainly had a Roswell vibe to it (which I was a big fan), but with a fresh take. Definitely will give this one a few more episodes. The leads are likable enough, and the Atrians are a fascinating culture. Hope we learn more about their lives and technology/way of life soon.
I guess they weren't going for consistency, because both of his parents look relatively young. The dad definitely didn't age much during those 10 years that they were in isolation.
The pilot was entertaining, and I won't be surprised if the ratings are good. So far, I like most of the lead characters. I'll continue watching it for now, but the main turn-off was that show's tendency to follow the typical CW formula of relying on certain overdone cliches and plot devices. I feel like I watch enough of those shows already. Star-crossed was particularly exceptional, because it managed to fulfil all the necessary CW criteria in just one pilot episode! Compassionate female lead: Check. HIgh School setting: Check. Attractive mature-appearing actors that seem way too old for high school: Check. African American best friend likely to play a very peripheral role: Asian American best friend who will eventually die and come back as a ghost (oops...sorry, wrong show). Check. Parent of lead character gets killed: Check. One-dimensional school bully with diminishing IQ: Check. Impending love triangle: Check. Check. Check!!! I believe that two ships have already set sail.
I've seen comments mentioning it around the place. I assume reviewers received the first 4 episodes of Star-Crossed like they did The 100 and information just circulated. (same thing happened with 'Looking' with reviewers saying to wait for episode 4)
Seriously? people are complaining about the lead actors age? lol he can pull of being a highschooler and I am pretty sure its their senior year. They do it for plenty of films and tv shows. The Vampire Dairies has a 31 year old playing a forever 17 year old. and Twilight (although I hate referencing it) had their main male role as a 25year old at the time playing 17. Its just the way it works and to be honest they pulled it off, because I believed he was in highschool.
Just absorb yourself into the fantasy rather then dwelling on the actors ages,
:-) But loved the show! can't wait for next weeks ep!
Matt lanter (although in my opinion he is a good actor) is playing a character literally half his age! He is 30 close to turning 31 and his character is supposed to be 15-16. Teagarden is 24. Getting near to a decade older than her character. Given that they both played high schoolers on popular tv shows 7 or so years ago (which is how they made names for themselves), I just think the premise of star crossed with these actors would have made far more sense had the show been set in college.
I thought it was ok. I thought Matt Lanter did a great job, I was not so crazy about the female lead. I´ll watch the next few episodes and then decide.
I guess I don't understand why all of the CW shows have to take place in high school and not college, especially if they're hiring 30 year old actors. If these kids actually graduate from high school after one season, I'll be impressed. The typical CW show usually keeps the actors in high school for at least 3 years, before finally realizing that it's time to move on.
I am surprised by all the awful votes. I didn't think I would like it as much as I did. All pilots have a lot to explain so they can be rushed but I think they did a great job. I didn't expect much so I was happy with it.
Yes, Julia was much more natural and I would prefer to see her as a lead. But Let´s wait and see, maybe it will change after 5 - 6 episodes. Romans sister ( I forget their names) also seemed ok to me (so far).
It looks like a good show, but the one thing that extremely bothered me was that when they were saying the pledge, they removed "God" from it. This country was founded on the principal, and if there are people who don't believe with it, then they don't have to say it.
I have to say Star-Crossed is definitely visually quite beautiful in some scenes, it seemed like a mini movie and the show felt different, not just a love story, but a glimpse of oppression in society and this is new for the CW, definitely will keep watching this, it is AWESOME!
I went with ok . My problem is the cast looks way too old to be in highschool ( what happend to you Julie Taylor ?? i mean Aimee Teegarden , you are way too skinny and not looking all that good ). The show it self was ok , predictable mostly .
our founding fathers repeatedly stated that our country was not based on any particular religion's version of a god. and the words "under god" weren't added to the pledge until the 1950's. removing the distraction of xtian religion is one of the greatest boons to civilization!
I actually thought it was pretty good. I mean yeah it has a few cliches. But it's not a huge thing, where i am disgusted. Idk if i like the lead girl yet. But i'm glad Malese Jow is in this. So that's something. And since i didn't mind the pilot, i guess i'll stick to it, and see what happens on the next 2 episodes. To give it my finale decision. One thing i do like is that they're known to the human race as opposed to Roswell where they had to go into hiding. I'm actual more interested in what powers these guys may posses.
I see every ones point. but at the same time A LOT of CW shows do it. The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, The Carrie Diaries, the list goes on, at the end of the day its what makes money and ratings. they know this from all their shows. but they even do it in movies, but if the actors can pull it off then I'm all cool with it. and speaking of someone who has worked on a number of short films, sometimes casting someone the same age may not work. so you hire someone older who can pull off being younger. Ive been told I look 20 when I'm nearly 26.....lol :-)
It's just ok to me. The two leads dont seem to have any chemistry. Roman is kind of charismatic. Em isn't feisty enough for me. She has that damsel in need of rescue look. This reminds me of ROSWELL from the 90s
Some US States have been trying to get "under God" removed and it is up to each School's discretion whether to include it. The writers of Star-Crossed decided that at this particular School in 2024 the students would not recite "under God". It was not intended as a religious or political statement.
I agree I'd like it if Julia was the female lead but she's still a main character. I liked Sophia as well can't wait to see how she deals with her father's death.
I don't like Emery I'd rather have Julia (Malese) being the female lead it's great seeing her as a main character now can't wait to see what she's going through next week.
What did you think of the Producer's Preview that was released by The CW? Not sure if you watched it yet but seems like this is just the start which is interesting.
I hate that so many people are focused on this one part and ignoring the scenes that seem to point to segregation. Besides, the pledge is about your loyalty to our country, not a religion. This shows is about aliens who are not part of America. Nobody seems to care that they didn't recite the pledge!
Complete agree with you, but because It's the CW I'm not that bothered by it. I am actually more annoyed by the fact that this is yet another (American) show that depicts Americans as mostly hateful and bigot toward strangers/new development/religion etc. With the clear headed ones ('good guys') always mayor in the minority. I've never been in the USA and I have plenty to comment on what I just read in the news, but I can't imagine that the way it is shown to us in movies/tv shows is very accurate. There is plenty to write about without going using all the cliches.
I will give it 2 max. 4 episodes chance, hopefully SC can improve.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I decide to watch the show live instead dvr it and have to say I enjoy it going to watch it again

ReplyDeleteVery good episode. Great start.
ReplyDeleteNext week will be good. There's two rebel groups and an attempted assassination, a carnival and at least two non-romance related reveals!
ReplyDeleteMuch more than I expected. Pleasantly surprised and will definitely be watching again next week.
ReplyDeleteSo aliens come to earth to go to high school. As if a 30 year old playing a 16 year old wasn't enough. I Couldn't even finish it
ReplyDeleteit wasn't their original intention, but since they are here, why not? Gotta start trying to join society some kind of way.
ReplyDeleteThe episode was AMAZING!! Really hope is getting renewed!!

They probably could have cast someone younger-looking as the male lead, I think.

ReplyDeleteSupposedly it really picks up in episode 3 so I'd say it's worth giving this the 4 episode test.
ReplyDeleteThe atrians age and die faster so lm guessing him looking older is part of that plot line the lead actor explained it the other day.
ReplyDeletei wasnt suppose to watch that show but im glad i did it was really good...cant wait for next week

ReplyDeleteThe Atrian's actually age faster then normal humans. So Roman (and the other Atrian's) are meant to look older.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was ok. I thought Matt Lanter did a great job, I was not so crazy about the female lead. I´ll watch the next few episodes and then decide.
ReplyDeleteLoved it :)

ReplyDeleteI didn't know that. Thanks. Apologies for what I said then haha.
ReplyDeleteditto. I prefered Julia more than the female lead. Promo looks good, I'll give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the first episode, i will keep watching and see where it goes.
