Went with great, the best of the three so far imo. I like that we got to learn so much more about the characters and saw that they are really care about each other.
It was a great bonding episode for the Musketeers! :) Great episode! I, of course, would have loved to see a lot more D'Artagnan/Constance interaction, of course! But that's coming next week based on the promo!!! And I'm still not liking Milady. But anyway, over all, it was a wonderful episode! All the musketeers got the chance to shine. Tom especially did amazing acting in this episode as we saw Athos's back story. He's a great actor.
Question: How is season 2 renewal looking now? I've compared the ratings of Atlantis to The Musketeers, and The Musketeers got higher ratings in terms of consolidated weekly viewer ratings. Yet, Atlantis was renewed. And we are still waiting for The Musketeers. There was a big rumor going around that the news would be out today. But there was no news. So I take that as bad news. Apparently, the cast was supposed to be specifically told on Monday if there will be a season 2. It was on a confirmed site. I doubt they'd announce that it would not be returning while the new episodes are still airing. They wouldn't want to lose viewers who don't want to get too attached. So I don't know. Here is the ratings comparison of Atlantis and The Musketeers, by the way: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Musketeers_(2014_TV_series) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Atlantis_episodes
As far as I've knew we should know we should have heard today, I've been out for most of today though and haven't really had a chance to check up properly as yet though, I have noticed that it's dropping over 3 1/2 million from its lead in show thou? And 4 million since the first episode. That's not a great sign unfortunately. We can't really compare figures with Atlantis, as they are a completely different show with a different target audience on a different day.
Thanks for the reply! Even if Atlantis is on a different day and with a different target audience, its ratings are still a lot lower than The Musketeers. So I don't see the logic if BBC One didn't renew The Musketeers, but yet renewed Atlantis with much lower ratings. Hoping for the best! But I agree that it's not looking good at all. Which is sad because this show is great and can build a loyal audience over time. If only BBC One will have patience with it. Plus, it is going to be aired on BBC America, right? It might do even better there. Fingers crossed.
I was half asleep last night, didn't take into account that the 4 million drop is from the total (over nights and 7 day catch up) for the first episode to just the over nights for ep 3, so that figure looks worse than it first seems actually. The other thing with Atlantis is that it's a bought in show, therefore the costs involved are completely different when it comes to renewal. I am personally still leaning towards its renewal myself, but we can't be sure as yet as they do seemed to have delayed the news for some reason.
I've been meaning to get over here and comment on this episode (which was excellent) but haven't gotten around to it. Hopefully a bit later. In the meantime, just getting some clarification on ratings. The ratings have dropped significantly, and it may not make a huge difference in the decision to renew I suppose, but - the show still won the 9pm time slot, didn't it?
Do they factor in at all the viewership through the BBC i-player, and if so, how has that been? Or is that included in the 7 day catch up?
Just about every show will drop at least a million or more from the first episode (even on later seasons, let alone the first one) so the drop isn't too much of a problem really I guess. It's over nights beat ITV by about half a million (and an audience share of 21.5% to 18.8%) this week I think, but I'm not sure what the consolidated figures are at present? I've been so busy as of late that I'm not keeping on top of things as I normally do I'm afraid :(
Afaik iPlayer figures from Smart TV sets count towards official figures on the 7 day catch up but computer stats don't, something to do with ISP's being counted. Though I think that technology is about to change, or may just have? i think you can probably comfortably add at 1 - 1 1/2 million on to the over nights for a cult show such as this, I see it in the top 5 on iPlayer every Monday when I'm on there so I think it's doing OK.
The biggest issue, imo, is that it has the totally wrong lead in show with Call the Midwife. It's a completely different audience demographic, and the drop off of 3 1/2 million+ shows that. When The Voice goes on twice a day at the weekend I'm really not sure what will happen and where it will get shunted?
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the episode :)
This was a fantastic episode. I liked the pacing, I liked the character growth, the humor, etc. etc. It was nice to see a little bit more of how The Musketeers work together, as well as to get hints at their back story. It’s interesting to see portrayed how much history they have together, how well they know each other, and yet how they still have these secrets amongst them (that they, no doubt, all know exist but don’t push each other on).
Aramis getting into Athos’s face over Porthos was interesting to see, as was Athos’ emotional conflict, and Porthos… Porthos.
In checking out some other reviews of The Musketeers, I unfortunately stumbled upon some articles and comments heavily criticizing the choice to cast a mixed-race actor as Porthos. Most of which seemed to state over and over variations of, “But France was white!” and “There is no way a mixed-race or black man would have served in the Musketeers.” And it just went downhill from there. Most commenters seemed completely unaware that Alexandre Dumas himself was mixed-race, as was his father, who served France as a general.
Howard Charles brought it home. I really enjoyed the conflict and range of emotion he brought to the story and to his character. (And I liked Aramis’s steady, somewhat calm but snarky defense of him).
Additionally, I like the way the writers are giving Porthos more depth and resonance. Though Dumas did a great job creating his characters, in some aspects of translating them to screen they can come across as one-dimensional, or (I think Jason said this in another thread) like caricatures instead of characters. Being a show “based on” the books, yet giving themselves permission to take some new directions, I think is what can make this work as a series show in the long run. It gives them a chance to explore character aspects more deeply, and maybe in a different way than they’ve been presented before, while still having fun with the source material.
That’s… well, that’s actually what I want in an adaptation right now.
Finally, I know it’s tongue in cheek, and I never thought I’d quote a flippant line from Psych to make a point, but I quote Gus when he was angling for a part in a musical version of Sherlock Holmes and was told he wasn’t appropriate for the part: “What, they hadn’t invented black people yet?”
Some additional points:
- I liked how pleased Aramis was acting when his needlework was being praised and when it was said he could have been a seamstress. I like how such praise comparisons bothered him not at all. :)
- This was true also for d’Artagnan when he was chasing Bonnaire (Bonaire?) and caught up with him because Bonnaire’s horse got tired and stopped. It seemed like Bonnaire was trying to insult d’Artagnan by calling him a farm boy, and I love that d’Artagnan’s reaction was just basically, “Yep, I’m a smart country boy. Sucks for you.”
- At times I felt the transitions were not cut or done as well as they could have been, but, alas, we are none of us perfect.
Loved this episode. The series grows on me more and more. I'm here for the long hall and looking forward to the next episode. :D
Some of the comments about Porthos being half cast have been ridiculous (as have ones saying that D'Artagnan is Arab or Indian?!? Some people have no clue it seems :s). There have been small pockets of black communities in Europe for hundreds of years, people should be more aware of history before they open their mouths sometimes, it makes them look foolish.
I totally agree with you about Howard Charles, and how they have given Porthos more depth in this adaptation. It is a story that has been reproduced so many times before that it does need something new brought to the table so it's great to see the small things they have done in order to have a big effect, so to speak.
Just got the word. Statement from Czech Anglo Productions:
Czech Anglo Productions are delighted to announce that the 2nd series of "The Musketeers" has today been green lit to shoot in Prague with Prep due to begin next week for a further 10 episodes.
Congratulations to everyone on our fabulous crew for all the hard work done last year to make this possible, and now to do it all over again!!
Good eval. I had no idea they were taking that kinda flack for their casting. Good grief.
On your other thoughts, to me it was good that Aramis got into Athos face on this one. Was needed. As were his snarky comments to Bonaire about his business practices. Also laughed at Aramis being proud of his needlework and at D'Artagnan's simple unbothered reaction to Bonaire's snide comment.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Awful

My take (longer than I planned it to be, lol)

Thanks for the breakdown. I'm not terribly well-versed at rating analysis. So, yes, thanks. (I'll just be here... hoping for renewal).
