Zoe McLellan — who was wife to Peter Krause on Dirty Sexy Money and played JAG‘s P.O. Jennifer Coates — has landed the role of Special Agent Brody, a Midwestern transplant who comes to New Orleans looking for a fresh start and a safe haven to heal old wounds, and thus is the show’s crawfish-out-of-water.

  1. Why has a major character on JAG joined an NCIS spin-off? Ugh, this irritates me.

I'm just going to pretend that the JAG/NCIS 'verse has dopplegangers. It's easier that way.

Can't wait to see who else is cast!

  2. Excellent. I've always liked her.

  3. Should have known they would cast someone from Jag.

  4. This cast is shaping up to be very good!

I don't understand why some people have such an issue with people that played characters in JAG...which ended almost 10 years ago. get cast in any NCIS. NCIS' McGee not only got cast after he had a recurring role in JAG he had a 1 episode stint on JAG before that as a entirely different character. It's the TV industry actors are going to end up in more that one show, and especially when writers, producers of a franchise find actors that they like to work with.

  5. LOL, I love McGee (and Sean) but that also bothers me. He had a pretty big arc on JAG!

  6. I have to agree with klutzy_girl. For me, a TV show is a universe. If Hawaii Five-0 and NCIS: Los Angeles join forces for an episode or two, then they are in the same universe. So by that definition, when one show spins into another, and that show into another, they are still all in the same universe. That's how I see it, so yes, I also dislike this.

  7. I will admit re-watching JAG at Christmas it bugged me that he played a ensign accused of rape and then had a big arc later as a different character. But him getting a leading role on a different show does not bug me. At this point NCIS New Orleans is the 3rd spin off of NCIS (LA, Red and NO) to be cast, you would run out of great actors pretty quick if the requirement was to have never been on 3 other long running TV shows! And yes NCIS spun off JAG but at this point the connection is so loose that I don't think it should matter.

  8. Even NCIS has barely touched on it's JAg connection in the last 11 years, the third spin off of that cannot be held to that ridiculous standard!

  9. Have to agree with you on this.Eleven years is long enough for an actor to have to be associated with that just one roll. I could see if it was only a couple of years, but for me its long enough.I look forward to this NCIS,can't wait!!

  10. After their one quasi-crossover in season one to boost ratings, even the two current NCIS programs actively avoid each other with the exception of sharing Director Vance. This really isn't a big deal and a potential new show shouldn't have to limit their potential talent pool because someone had a recurring role on a related TV series 15 years ago.

  11. Agreed! The actors in Red just didn't mesh well,at least in my opinion.I'm glad it didn't get picked up for this opportunity with these actors would never have come along.Love Bakula and Zoe was good in Jag,I can't wait to see who else gets cast!

  12. If you watch shows from 60s and 70s, you'll see the same actor playing a number of different characters (e.g. Stephanie Powers played two different women on Lancer). Having an actor play only one character on a TV show is a relatively recent thing.

And Bellisario, like Josh Whedon, has a repertory of actors that he reuses on different series (although not in the same universe in Whedon's case).

  13. Not only did they not mesh well, most of the characters were almost entirely forgettable. Without any standout characters its just a random procedural with the "NCIS" tag slapped on.

  14. Did the characters from NCIS ever meet the characters from JAG? What I meant by my comment is that if the NCIS characters met the JAG people, then they are in the same universe. I'm not sure whether this spin-off is being said to be from NCIS or NCIS: LA, but either way, some of the characters from NCIS: LA have met NCIS, so NCIS: NO casting someone from JAG would, in my book, break the rules of physics.

  15. It really isn't that difficult to find another actor. Hollywood's full of them! And very few of them have been a part that launched the entire franchise. Even me, sitting here in Norway, with top grades in acting, would consider joining this. So "limiting" their potential talent pool by removing the JAG people from it, really isn't troublesome.

  16. They shouldn't be obligated to find another actor if they've already found the one they want.

  17. I was always curious as to who picked those actors. It seemed like they were either picked as favors to someone or they just threw names in a hat and picked.. Yes,they were forgettable, each and everyone of them...

  18. I guess we disagree there. I think once you create a franchise, you don't take people from the original series that had their respective parts there back into the franchise in a new project, even if the original series has ended.

  19. Yes..NCIS was born out of Jag in a 2 parter in 1993.One episode was called 'Ice Queen',Harm was accused of killing an officer and Gibbs,Tony and Ducky came to investigate.

  20. Zoe McLellan shouldn't be denied the chance get the job simply because she was in Jag all those years ago. That is completely ridiculous.

  21. If everyone adhered to that rather arbitrary guideline, Harry Morgan would have never been Col. Potter on MASH, Jerry Orbach and S. Epatha Merkerson wouldn't have had the chance to be Briscoe and Van Buren on Law & Order, and the same goes for Diane Neal as Novak on SVU. Most recently, Peter Capaldi would have never been cast as the new Doctor on Doctor Who. Half of the people I listed put in award winning performances on their respective shows.

  22. Maybe it is to you. In fact, maybe I am in the minority feeling like this, but I really do believe that all TV shows are a universe. In 75 years, you'll still be you. You can't change that. Then suddenly maybe there was a 12-year-old kid who moved around, and it's you being another person. That's how I see it, and of course it's a silly thought, but it's just what I feel regarding such a casting move into the NCIS/JAG world. And seriously, if she had a major part on JAG, then good for her. She is already known in the business world then and could probably get other parts much more easily than a talented actress without a single acting job just dying to be part of the NCIS world. But like I said, I might be in the minority.

  23. I'm sorry, but why is it "arbitrary"? I believe saying that each show is a universe, and combining TV shows (crossovers) expand such a universe since people from both shows can interact with each other. Isn't that fair to acknowledge?

    ReplyDelete
  24. An "all or nothing" proposition like that is plenty arbitrary. There is plenty of precedent for same actors playing different roles in the same TV universe. It has been going on forever without incident.

When casting something like this, there has to be a judgment call. Casting someone who had a recurring role on a different show over a decade ago isn't a problem. It just isn't. Especially if that's the person you feel is right for the job. Now, by the same token, no one is going to consider casting say... Cote de Pablo, Lauren Holly, or Sasha Alexander for the role. The "all or nothing" line your drawing just isn't reasonable. If it was, these exceptions wouldn't happen all the time.

  25. Alright, OK, I'll give you that one. Good argumentation! You've successfully changed my mind. :) Thanks, I was nervous I wouldn't be able to watch this new show because of this, but I'm relieved now and I'm going to give it a chance!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Heh. Well, this could all be academic if this spinoff doesn't raise the quality bar significantly from the last attempted spinoff.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That is a perfectly understandable way to see things, silly or not. I just don't think it should go so far as to dictate whether or not the actress gets the job regardless of how well known she is.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I guess Sean Murray shouldn't be on NCIS then. Since he had a rather major character arc on JAG, playing an entirely different character. And previously played yet another character on JAG in a single episode.

Although I would love to see more JAG cross-overs of characters, that ship has long since sailed. Clayton Webb (Steven Culp) has appeared on NCIS as a Navy Commander. Sturgis Turner (Scott Lawrence) has appeared on NCIS as a Captain etc. The only major cross-overs so far, are Lt Roberts (early season 1) and Chegwidden.

  29. I liked her in dirty sexy money and i wanted to see her again. This new spin-off might not be so bad after all.
