Mid-season evaluation - Reviewing various shows as they stand

3 Feb 2014

It’s the beginning of February. Four months ago, in late September/early October, the 2013-2014 TV season started. Within four months, mid to late May, the regular season will have ended with summer season ready to start. As we are now somewhat in the middle of the television season, I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the shows that I watch and see how they are currently doing quality-wise.

Since I have “only” 168 hours in a week, just like the rest of you, you will understand that it is impossible to watch every show on every network. Also, I don’t live in the USA so I watch all my episodes online. I currently have 11 show on my watchlist, 6 which are currently airing, 2 have concluded their seasons, 2 still have to premiere and one show will return later. For the record, I don’t watch cable or comedy shows, but limit myself to the broadcast networks. From my 11 shows, 5 are from CBS, 4 from The CW and 2 from NBC. I currently don’t watch ABC or Fox shows online, although some might be added in the future.

Now let’s get on to the review, going in alphabetical order.

Arrow
Arrow has been really good this season. After the first few fairly OK episodes, the show’s fourth episode revealed that Sara Lance is alive and is the Black Canary. If only this revelation hadn’t been spoiled already in summer, it would have totally blown me away. The addition of Caity Lotz as Sara is a perfect addition to the Arrow family, and I am really hoping she stays around. Episodes 4 up until the midseason finale were great all together. The seventh episode was probably the weakest of them, but the revelation that Malcolm Merlyn is alive made it still a great episode for me. The two-part midseason finale introduced us to Barry Allen aka The Flash, played by Grant Gustin. I am really looking forward to seeing what the spin-off will bring us. Returning after the holidays, the episodes were again fairly OK, with “Tremors” standing out. I look forward to seeing all the storylines being played out.
Yet there are still a few problems with Arrow. I believe that it currently has too many active storylines, which means that some storylines are being dragged out while others are hastily ended. If we only consider the amount of enemies Team Arrow currently has, we can think of: Deathstroke/Slade Wilson/Sebastian Blood, the League of Assassins, Malcolm Merlyn, Isabel Rochev (she must be an enemy, right?) and the Suicide Squad. Again, I am curious to see the storylines develop but hope they won’t be all dragged out.
Another problem is the amount of screen time/action each series regular gets. Diggle and Felicity have only been in the cave for the last few episodes. Thea doesn’t seem to be active in any storyline. Laurel was finally involved in the Blood storyline, but she now seems to have her own personal drama. I could go on, but most of you will know what I am talking about. Let’s hope it will improve within time.
Grade: A-

Hostages
As a reviewer for the show, I had to watch every episode. This was, however, not a punishment at all. I really enjoyed Hostages for the time being. After each episode, I was always looking forward to the next one. The plot really gripped me and what made it even more interesting were all the personal problems from both the Sanders family and the captors. I think the limited format worked well for the show. Was it being dragged out too long? Maybe. Did the show stray off too much? Maybe. There might have been a few episodes we could have done without, but overall, it was quite an enjoyable series. Too bad the ratings weren’t there.
Grade: B+

Intelligence
Ever since seeing the first trailer, I have been looking forward to Intelligence. Unfortunately, the show has been quite disappointing for me. The cases are boring and the show just hasn’t been able to really grab my interest like other procedurals do. I do like the chemistry between Riley and Gabriel, but that’s about it. I was supposed to be a reviewer for the show, but dropped that after seeing the second episode. I haven’t seen past episode 2 yet, so it might have improved since then. While I am not ready to drop if from my watchlist yet, the show currently has no priority to me.
Grade: D

NCIS
NCIS is my all-time favourite show. However, that doesn’t mean it’s the best show currently airing. Of course, the show had quite a shake-up at the beginning of the season when Ziva and her portrayer Cote de Pablo departed. Yet I really liked both the premiere and episode 2 and I would like to believe that the writers did their best, given the circumstances, to write a proper send-off for Ziva. The first post-Ziva episode, “Under the Radar”, was, in my honest opinion, a nice episode to start a new era for the show. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm dropped after that. The following episodes up to and including 7 were a bit boring and couldn’t really grab my attention. Though each episode had its good moments (Mike Franks returns/Tony’s growth/Borin returns/Jackson is back with quite an emotional background story), my interest in the show was renewed around episode 8. I found the alibi case in the episode quite interesting and as such, I enjoyed the episode pretty much. With the introduction of Ellie Bishop in the next episode, I believe the show found some more stability. While I like her character, she obviously still has a lot to learn (telling Gibbs how he needs to do his job?!?). Yet individual episodes started to improve with the new team member, with “Devil’s Triad” being one of the funniest episodes the show has ever done and of course returning with a (literal) bang after the holidays. I liked Moira Queen Hollis Mann’s return and the latest episode was a really emotional one.
However, besides some non-interesting cases, I have a few other problems with the season. The biggest one is consistency. As an example let’s look at the Parsa storyline. In the premiere, it was revealed that he was after the entire team and that his primary target was Ziva David. But by the time episode 2 finished, she and the rest of the team seemed quite safe and the fact that they were in danger seemed completely forgotten. I also don’t like that the characters have moved on too quickly from Ziva’s departure. I mean, Abby didn’t even cry or anything! And Tony acts like she is dead by putting another goldfish next to his other goldfish that resembles his late partner. It’s not like he kissed her goodbye at the airport or so! You might want to talk to her on the phone, or you could simply Skype?!
Grade: B-

NCIS: Los Angeles
NCIS: Los Angeles and I have a love-hate relationship that goes all the way back to its pilot. When it premiered, I wasn’t really an online viewer besides the occasional important episode of NCIS. When the show premiered in the Netherlands (where I live), I started to record episodes of the spin-off as they were airing after its mothership anyway (I couldn’t watch them live). I remained doing so until the season 1 finale, when the show went on hiatus. When the show returned (in the Netherlands) with season 2 episodes, I actually forgot to record the episodes and at a certain moment decided to drop it all together. After not having seen the show for one and a half seasons, the Blye K. two-parter was airing in the Netherlands and I thought these episodes were interesting enough to record both of them. Frankly, my interest in the show was renewed and the DVR was on again. As such, I have seen every episode up until the season 4 finale when they aired in my country. Since I did follow the Sidorov storyline online, I of course watched the season 5 premiere online as well. Episodes 2 and 3 were somewhat of a continuation of that storyline (Deeks’ PTSD) and episode 4 was the 100th episode so I couldn’t wait to see those ones either. The next episode I have watched since is episode 10. I skipped episodes 6 up to 9 (besides the final scene of 9) because there wasn’t really an ongoing storyline. In episode 10, the Densi relationship was brought up again so I wanted to watch it. It also started a new storyline (White Ghost if I remember correctly) which will be interesting to watch, but I have yet to catch up on that. Fortunately, there is no original programming during the Olympics which means I have time to catch up. I liked the five episodes that I’ve seen.
As to why I don’t love NCIS: LA like its mother show, I can make a few remarks about that. Nearly all of the team’s cases seem to involve some matter of national security (usually terrorists), while I think there could be more ‘simple’ cases (e.g. a family drama). Plus, all of the bad guys are usually killed at the end of the episode which makes the team seem like some sort of rogue unit. Seriously, if Richard Parsons were to pay them a visit, they would have long lost their job.
Grade: B

Nikita
Nikita aired its final six episodes in late 2013. The advantage of the very short season was that the show wasted no time. Every episode was well-paced and nicely followed up on the previous one. I especially liked the second half of the season (episodes 4, 5 and 6) which had a little bit more action and were perhaps more personal than the first three. The series finale was tremendous and there was nothing more I would have wanted for the series ender. In fact, there was only one thing that I wanted from the final season in general: more episodes. There were some storylines that didn’t entirely get the time to develop thoroughly (I am looking at you, Alex/Sam!) and there were some loose ends from earlier seasons (Alex’ mom, Michael’s son and Cassandra), although some fans are perfectly fine with them not reappearing. Overall, season four was a near-perfect final season. Now it’s time to re-view (not review) some old episodes as I have recently bought seasons 1 and 2 on DVD.
Grade: A

The Blacklist
I have only gotten excited about The Blacklist as recently as two weeks ago. While I have watched the series premiere in September, I didn’t love it like everyone else did to be honest. Also, to be completely honest, I gave more priority to Hostages as I both liked the pilot (and premise) more and I was a reviewer for the show. The Blacklist, however, stayed on my radar and with Hostages having ended and Intelligence gaining low priority, I finally decided to continue with the show. So far, I have seen the first six episodes, but I believe I will catch up fully during Olympics. I really like the show and I think James Spader is a great criminal. I also heard there are some great storylines coming up, thanks to having read some spoilers ahead (remind me to never do that again: I already know who the mole is before even knowing that there is a mole).
Grade: A

The Tomorrow People
The Tomorrow People’s position is similar to NCIS: LA’s position. While I don’t love the show like its lead-in (Arrow), The Tomorrow People is still an enjoyable and good series to watch. Its quality has seen ups and downs. The show started off slowly (I can barely remember the first few episodes), but after they more or less dropped the breakout-of-the-week story, the show gained more steam. Although I wasn’t an enormously big fan of the mid-season finale (I liked episode 8 better), this year’s episodes have been really great to watch. Standing out the most is perhaps the most recent episode, “Sitting Ducks”, with lots of important events happening.
Grade: B

Under the Dome
While not officially part of the fall season, Under the Dome is also a show that is on my watchlist. Its first season seems like ages ago, though, and I need to watch it again before it returns for its second season. I have enjoyed the first season and have looked forward to the episodes every week. One reason for that may also be that there was nothing else to watch in summer so it was easily the best summer show for me. However, I do tend to agree with most critical points of the show. There were various plot holes throughout the season and some characters really need better writing (we are looking at you, Linda!). I also liked Under the Dome’s time slot successor (Hostages) more than Under the Dome. Still, I am looking forward to its return and believe that, with Stephen King writing the premiere and hopefully supervising the rest of the season as well, the show can come back even better.
Grade: B-

That’s it for the season so far. However, I think there are some great series that have yet to premiere. The two that I am looking forward to most, are Crisis and The 100. As I will also be a reviewer for both of these shows, I can tell you that both of these shows look very good. I am especially excited about The 100!

Elsewhere, towards summer, Under the Dome returns and some new shows premiere as well. One that I might be checking out is Gang Related. I am also considering watching 24: Live Another Day, although I have never seen 24 before, and Extant, although it might be too supernatural for me. It’s also likely that I will add one or two shows to my watchlist in summer since there is not a lot on TV. One that I am seriously considering to start watching is Scandal. Just a few months ago, the Netherlands started to broadcast the show from the beginning. While I haven’t been following it, I have seen various trailers that actually made the show look quite interesting. I do hope that it’s more than your typical Shonda Rhimes everybody-sleeping-with-everybody show. If anyone cares to elaborate in the comments why I should or shouldn’t watch it, please do! Also, if you have more tips for me, feel free to tell me! I think I have given you a good idea of what kind of a TV viewer I am. For example, how is Chicago PD?

What do you think of the TV season so far? Any yet-to-premiere midseason shows you can’t wait to see? What about summer? Any tips for me what I could start watching in summer?

  2. Arrow has been an Epic Season 2! (:

  3. I'd say Arrow's grade is a little high. Episodes 7, 10 and 11 were poor, and in my opinion, dragged the season down. Also, the constant focus on a poor character in Laurel and the lack of any Diggle story (or in fact more than 10 lines per episode), as well as seemingly focusing on 'Olicity' (which although in itself I don't mind, focussing on it annoys me). B for Arrow for me.

Hostages just irritated me. Stories were awful - having set everything up to carry throughout a season, they basically ignored all of those stories from about episode 5. C- for me.

Enjoyed Intelligence but it seemingly has no point to it. Unless I'm missing something, it just seems like another procedural. C.

NCIS, NCIS LA, The Blacklist and The Tomorrow People I'd give an A-. All had their highs and lows this season, but they've been damn good for the most part. The Ziva sendoff episodes were fantastic.

Nikita gets an A+. What a FANTASTIC final season. If it wasn't for Arrow (or Person of Interest), that would be my best show so far this season. Kudos to the writers who did the ending perfectly.

Looking back, Under the Dome... ugh. D. I'll watch in June but I won't be happy about it.

24 returning is possibly my highlight of the decade. Seriously, watch the eight seasons (and the TV movie). Fantastic TV.

I'd also recommend getting into Person of Interest. Blatantly the best show I watch. But you have to watch from the start - and pay very close attention.

    Great article!

  4. Thanks for the review.

I currently still watch Intelligence, but I think episodes 2 and 4 (every other even) have been more story of the week, than serialized (although episode 2 did have a nice strong serialized finish), which serialization is what I prefer. Episode 3 however I thought was really good and I'm curious if episode 5 (tonight's episode will follow suit) I think CBS should have waited till this week to launch it. I think it's timeslot is the most unfortunate given so many (myself included) are invested in The Blacklist.

At any rate my issues with Intelligence is the exposition. They over explain (talk to audience like we're stupid) and shift scenes too fast, which make it feel hollow. I'm warming up to Riley and Gabriel relationship, as I had concerns about that prior to the season.

It looks beyond certain to be cancelled, which is a shame, because I don't think it got a fair shot and/or has had enough time to work out some possible kinks. I do hope however that Josh Holloway might get recruited for Abram's, Nolan's, Joys', and Weintraub's adaptation of The Michael Crichton's Westworld film to television series on HBO (only a Pilot commitment exists at the moment)

I'm looking forward to Believe and the 100 along with the returns of Hannibal, Bates Motel, Orphan Black, Mad Men, and Game of Thrones!

  5. I think the only one is 24 so thrilled my fav action show is back! And I'm curious too about bates motel. Just wondering if it's any good.

  6. Ok i only read the two shows i watch that you reviewed, frankly b/c i watch them and can relate. Hahah sorry no offense. As for Arrow, i agree. I didn't read the spoilers in the summer time about Sara so I was BLOWN AWAY. I really do love her addition to the show. And i truly hope that she sticks around, b/c for me, she's one of the best things to happen to the series. And as for the enemies that Oliver has to face, i couldn't be more positive that the rest of this season is going to be EPIC! I would like to see Diggle and Felicity out of the cave more, it really had been awhile. And i would like to see how Roy interacts with them in the cave. Thea doesn't have a storyline, you're right, but i have a feeling that will change soon. B/c i can't help but get that commercial out of my head with her and Oliver, so i think once she knows Ollie's secret that will all change.

TTP. I know a lot of people has said that the show started off slow (which it did) and I didn't care much for the cliches, the quick love triangle, the long lost for father, the bestie having feelings for said bestie. BUT with all that aside, and Mark Pellegrino being apart of the cast, I automatically liked it right away. And i think that has to do with the fact that I am a sucker for the whole Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Comic genre. (Marvel, DC, Matrix, just a few examples). I really do love this show, not as much as Arrow, but i enjoy watching it every week, and i'm glad i added it to my tv list. Sure it has some kinks, but i feel it's really coming together, and I wish more people would give it another chance.

    ReplyDelete
  7. good summary and I agree with you wholeheartedly about intelligence and I also watch arrow,TTP,the blacklist, NCIS and you are correct about them and I also watch scandal and its really good it started at first to be very normal but as you go on it gets better and better I can really recommend it

Arrow a little high lol whatever bro ep 11 was amazing ,i compare arrow to other shows not the other away around because it is arrow that is setting the standard

  9. I'm sorry, but the quality of the article itself wasn't that great. Don't do an evaluation of shows you haven't watched all of the current episodes for, because then your evaluation is highly suspect. Why should anyone take your review of the current season of NCIS Los Angeles seriously when you haven't seen half of the currently aired episodes? If you're going to write an article then don't half-ass it. You're working off of partial information to review most of these shows.

I'm just telling you this as constructive criticism. Even if you can't watch every episode, google is extremely useful for finding detailed synopses. Some people may be more willing to pat you on the back for trying, but if you want me to respect your opinion on these shows, then respect your own opinion enough to do the research.

  10. I think Arrow has been disappointing this season, with the exception of a few episodes, because the relationship between Oliver and Felicity has been sucking the air out of the show but this latest episode gave me hope.
Intelligence is one of my favorite shows and I can't see how you complain about the cases being boring when you give NCIS a better grade.
Hostages was boring and deserves its fate, just saying.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Scandal typical show of hers. You can't pay me to watch. I do give credit for forcing cast to get on twitter, to tweet and get buzz.LOL seriously an actor said it.

Honestly would pick General Hospital a better soap opera!

Intelligence was such a disappointment. Such a good plot and :(

    ReplyDelete
  12. I can't wait for Hannibal and the Americans to start at the end of the month and for Orphan Black and Game of Thrones to begin in April. As for summer then the second season of Orange Is The New Black is going to be a must watch.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I agree. Intelligence has had 5 episodes now, 4 when this article was written, and the grade is based on only half the available episodes. In order to do a proper review of where the shows stand now it is necessary to watch all episodes, not just 50%.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Scandal is great entertainmentm specially last season has been all about the twists and turns, if that's your thing, scandal would be a good choice.
Chicago PD has an amazing cast, the thing that threw me off a little is that they started the show with season finale material and didn't give us enough time to really care. I'm pretty sure I would't watch it if it wasn't for the cast (just like Intelligence) but the actors and the characers reallly make it worth my while, at least for the tine being.
The Following is not everybodys cup of tea but if it happens to be yours it's a lot of fun, I also recommend Hannibal, The Newsroom, True Detective and Sherlock if you are into brilliant writting, they all exceed in that area.
Later on, I'd recommend Game of Thrones and Orphan Black.
Great article,I don't know if it shows but I watch a lot of TV so if you happen to be curious I have a personal take in many of them. Cheers.

  15. I think you guys should give it a try. I was also kind of disappointed at the beginning but last week's episode was an improvement and this week's was almost awesome. :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. For me, the standout network shows this year were: The Good Wife, Scandal, Sleepy Hollow, Arrow, Revenge and the Blacklist. None of these shows have "filler" episodes, which makes them so terrific.
Other very good network shows were Once Upon a Time, Chicago Fire, The Big Bang Theory, Intelligence, Chicago PD and Tomorrow People. I didn't enjoy the first episode of Intelligence, but the more recent episodes have been very good so I would recommend giving it a second chance. It's definitely worth more than a rating of D! I also hated the earlier episodes of the Tomorrow people but it's now become one of my favorite network shows. New network shows that I wound the most disappointing were Agents of Shield and Hostages

My favorite new cable show was surprisingly the Lifetime series Witches of East End. I also watched most of Masters of Sex but I found it overrated and probably won't stick with it.
My favorite established cable shows were Haven and Episodes . If you haven't watched Haven, I would check it out, although I'd recommend starting from the beginning. It's qutie addicting and it's also not like any of the other Syfy shows, My other favorite cable shows, Orphan Black, The Americans and Twisted haven't aired yet, but their second seasons are just about to start.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I second that. The first 2 episodes of Intelligence were very boring, But the recent two episodes were a major improvement. I'm glad I stuck with it. I think the writers did a poor job of introducing us to the characters, but now that they've progressed beyond that stage and are now more focussed on the case of the week, the show is a lot better.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I haven't given up on Intelligence yet. It just has currently no realy priority to me. But I will catch up with it, I promise!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks for the kind words and comparing it with your grades! Funny to see that you also watch all the nine shows that I have reviewed and interesting to hear your opinions on them!

I have also thought about POI as the concept sounds really cool. Might give it a try in summer, thanks for recommending!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Intelligence certainly has a very difficult time slot to be in as it's up against the most-watched new show (The Blacklist) and a high performing ABC veteran (Castle). It looks certain to be canceled indeed, but don't forget that last week's episode rose more than 30% in the 18-49 demo (from 1.1 to a 1.5) and had the most viewers since its premiere. Episode 5 seems to have been rated well by SpoilerTV readers, with nearly 70% rating the episode 'Awesome' (http://www.spoilertv.com/2014/02/poll-what-did-you-think-of-intelligence.html).

  21. Thanks for the feedback! I agree that there are some grades which are based on just a few episodes so they might be biased indeed. Maybe you're right and I should have left them out. I have, however, explicitly enough stated that the grades for NCIS: Los Angeles, Intelligence and The Blacklist are based on not all episodes of the season. For the rest of the shows, I have seen every episode of the season that has currently aired.
I could have read summaries of the episodes I haven't watched, yes, but it's hard to grade episodes by simply reading a synopsis. Sometimes the synopsis sounds like a great episode while in reality the episode was boring, and sometimes the description sounds meh but in fact it was a great episode.

But again, thanks for the criticism! I appreciate you giving feedback, and I certainly will take it into consideration should I do a similar article again!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks for sharing your opinions and recommendations! I certainly haven't given up on Intelligence, and I will catch up in the next few weeks. I agree that The Tomorrow People also started out slow, but is now quite a good show. Maybe Intelligence also needs some time to find its footing. Like I said, I certainly will give the recent episodes a try as well!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think you won't regret it :)

  24. Intelligence got a lot better. I really love Gabriel & Riley together, their scenes get better with every week. You should tune back in. From the show you've mentioned I just watch Arrow and Arrow is strong really strong. Looking forward to every new ep,

  25. It seems like a lot of people don't make sitting down to watch TTP a priority but when they do watch they love it. That's sort of the boat I am in too. I just need something to make me feel like I have to watch it Wednesday night or I'll be missing out.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Pretty sure 11 was up there with the worst of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  27. i will also catch up with it i will most likely watch the three i haven't seen this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's an apt description of TTP. The show is good on the whole, I enjoy it, but there's that something missing, you know? To make me go from "Cool, let's sit down to watch TTP" to "YESSSSSSSS it's Wednesday! (In my case Thursday - non-American viewer) TTP AWESOMENESS!!!!". I will say however that it seems to be picking up its pace and momentum. I'm more excited for this week's episode, where it looks like major stuff will go down, than I've been for almost any episode before. So there's that. The sad part is that right now, smart money is definitely on this show getting the boot in May. It will soon have to somehow maintain the same ratings in a tougher slot on Monday, and even then at least two of Reign, Star-Crossed and The 100 will have to do worse for the network to renew TTP. (Although, after The Carrie Diaries got renewed last year, every CW prediction I make now has an asterisk next to it saying "not accounting the this network's craziness". LOL)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Have you watched every episode? And last week's? I mean the season isn't over yet, so it might surprise you. Stick with it. = )

    ReplyDelete
  30. I found that sort of "Meh" feeling back about episodes 5-9. Episode 8 and then these past 3 have really upped the quality, and so have changed that feeling a little (it helps when Arrow airs before it and I love Arrow). Still not quite sure about its future. If it keeps at 0.7 in the 18-49 on Mondays (or even gets higher) then it'll get renewed I think. Depends on how many shows the CW want to renew. 4 are certainties (Arrow, TVD, Originals, SPN). TTP, Reign, Star-Crossed and The 100 are the ones fighting it out IMO. HoD, BatB and TCD are screwed.

  31. I'm not having that it was on par with Sacrifice. Not a hope in hell. From what I've seen, general consensus is that it was quite poor. The whole Laurel story is so overexaggerated and quite frankly, annoying. While it had continued along in the background, bringing it front and center was a mistake. Slade/Deathstroke was good, the island scenes were ok and the ending of Roy agreeing to be trained was nice, but the rest was pretty poor. Felicity and Diggle, once again, didn't seem like main characters. Felicity had a couple of humorous moments with Oliver and Diggle was good for the flashback transitions. Not a good episode in my opinion. But, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

When did i say it was on par with Sacrifice?Bradley i liked the episode because i thought the direction by Glen Winter was amazing i actually loved the Laurel stuff and Felicity wasn't overdone like she has been it would be my 3rd favourite ep for this season for me and i have enjoyed every episode so far jmo.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You said ign gave it a 9.5, which is what they gave Sacrifice. The direction was good (Brother Blood appearing like that at the start was freaky) but the content wasn't great. The less Laurel, the better. Quentin is the only thing that made her bearable in 2.11. I'd say it is potentially the worst of the season so far.

  38. And that is an opinion, which I, like you and everyone else, is entitled to give.

  39. Arrow and TTP are definitely a great combo. I thought The CW should have done more cross-promotion than they did, to try to get Arrow viewers to check out TTP. Action, superheroes, young and hunky Amell leads... they've got a lot in common. :)

I have a really hard time seeing TTP get 0.7's on Monday, unfortunately. I mean, anything's possible but wasn't last week the first 0.7 it has gotten since like episode 3? After that, it was consistently getting 0.6's and then 0.5's. It seems the bump last week was due to less competition in the slot than usual. In addition, whereas now it has a powerful lead-in, TTP is going to have Star-Crossed leading into it on Monday. And I really can't see another cheesy romance type show taking off on The CW. At most, it'll be a modest but okay-ish performer like Reign.

I see The CW situation like this. Five shows are a shoe-in for renewal - the four you mentioned, and as odd as it may seem, HoD. They're clearly aiming for stripped syndication with this show, the way they did with Nikita (they would've probably seen that plan through if Nikita's ratings had been a little less awful, and given it a full 4th season). In addition, HoD is probably their cheapest show to produce given that it's merely a comedic drama and the cast doesn't include a lot of well-known actors; they need that, with so many expensive sci-fi and action shows.
That leaves 5 open slots. I agree that BatB and TCD will be cancelled (their decision to give BatB an uninterrupted run until March, thus not saving any episodes for May sweeps, clearly signifies that - similar to Ringer two years ago). The network is in good enough shape this year that I don't see it needing to keep low-rated shows around as filler, except for HoD which gets by because of the above-stated reasons. For the last three years, The CW premiered 3 new shows every fall. We know that one or even two (The Flash and SPN's spin-off) are almost certain to be green-lit, anyway. So that only leaves two slots, and one of them will probably even be shared with America's Next Top Model. Given that, I assume only two of TTP, Reign, Star-Crossed and The 100 will get renewed. If for some reason the network only picks up 2 pilots to series, than 3 of the shows I just mentioned could survive, but that's an unlikely scenario.

  40. Agree with all of that. I think Star-Crossed will be DOA. That leaves it between The 100, Reign and TTP. I think the latter two have a better chance than The 100, but you never know.

  41. I'll be watching Believe, Crisis, Resurrection, Mixology, About A Boy and The 100. If anybody wants to see a really good show, watch ABC Family's The Fosters.
