CBS has been seeking half a million dollars from advertisers who want to tuck a 30-second commercial alongside the March 31 series finale of “How I Met Your Mother,” according to people familiar with the negotiations.
Not everyone will pay that sum. Advertisers who bought the program during last year’s “upfront” market, when networks seek to sell the bulk of their ad inventory for the fall season, were able to secure ad berths in the finale for between $300,000 and $350,000, according to these people.

ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of money! TBBT makes around $350,000 and I don't think HIMYM will get TBBT ratings even for the finale (sure, I expect it to be high 4s, but not 5s like TBBT)
ReplyDeleteYou mean who would want to have their product associated with the final episode of a series that ran for 9 years and has gathered a massive amount of fans, followers, and faithful viewers and that might draw in even those who haven't been watching it regularly just to see how will something that's been around for almost a decade will end? Who ever sat that price in CBS is smart and has big ones in his pants and they'll have people paying for it.
ReplyDeleteSeries finale and regular season finale are very different things, you'll see there will be those that will shell out that money for a 30 sec commercial.

The point is that it's likely that some people who regularly don't watch TV will be watching (i.e. people who only watch through DVR but that will want to watch this one live). Those people are extremely valuable for advertisers so they are willing to pay more for them since they are very hard to reach.
ReplyDeleteI understand, and I think a lot of people will watch the finale live, I just don't think it will be over 5 point rating; of course, this is just an assumption, it could manage to get that rating, but $350,000 seems more reasonable for the finale than $500,000. If they manage to make that much money, then good for CBS, I just think it's a little too high

ReplyDeleteIt's really too bad CBS couldn't treat the show better. If you're making this much money off of one of your flagship comedies you should be willing to shell out the money for some half-decent green screening.
ReplyDeleteYou are also assuming that TBBT's viewers are worth the same as Mother's viewers. Mother is the youngst skewing show on CBS and its 18-34 ratings are through the roof. It's very likely that 1 viewer of Mother is worth something like 1.5 of TBBT. I am just making up the ratio, but you get the idea.

ReplyDeleteAccording to Variety, TBBT ad spot costs $317,000. The highest is The Walking Dead $360,000.
ReplyDeleteBut Ad spots for series finales of popular shows are generally more than regular episodes. Series finales of shows like Seinfeld, Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond have gone over 1 and 2 million. Of course, since HIMYM is not as popular in terms of ratings as those shows, it's 500,000. It's less than what ad spots on Lost and 24 series finales have cost.
