Bitten - Bitten - Review : "When Your Past Comes Back to Bite You"
6 Jul 2014
Bitten LM ReviewsBitten 1.05 “Bitten” was written by Daegan Fryklind and directed by Andy Mikita. This is the third episode penned by Fryklind and the second directed by Mikita. As the episode centers around Elena’s (Laura Vandervoort) initiation into the pack, it makes sense that Fryklind would step in to write this one herself.
In flashbacks, we see Elena apply for a job as Professor Clay Danver’s (Greyston Holt) typist. There is an immediate attraction between the two and Pete (Joel Keller) and Nick (Steve Lund) who are visiting tease Clay about her. Clay is determined to keep his distance, but Elena is determined to get the job. She tells him that she is very self-sufficient when he suggests she’ll need to be trained. Her strength and determination in getting the job, the fact that she is already living on her own and supporting her own way through university are all evidence of the strength that allows her to withstand the change.
There’s a nice repeat of the scene we’ve already seen of Elena showing up with Clay at Stonehaven. I’d been wondering about the totem pole in the foyer since we first saw it – but of course it’s a wolf! They identify it as a Haida totem. Totem means “his kinship group.” The wolf totem is associated with love, freedom, and compassion – all themes we’ve already seen in the show. However, Clay’s memory of sleeping at the base of it as a boy because he could smell the moss, smoke, and ocean is a perfect reflection of his own adjustment to life in the pack – those smells would have reminded him of his home in the swamp. We also learn about Clay’s origin story. Jeremy (Greg Bryk) reminds him that when he found him, he’d already been bitten and was a feral little boy abandoned in the swamp. Jeremy sat for weeks on a tree stump until he gained Clay’s trust. Jeremy calls on that trust to get Clay’s obedience.
Bryk does a wonderful job in this episode in showing us a different side to the Jeremy we’ve come to know. In his dealings with the Sheriff (Fiona Highet), he’s always been very courteous and sought her good will to protect the pack. When Elena arrives at Stonehaven unannounced by Clay, we see a much more foreboding and severe Jeremy who is protecting his pack.
Clay confesses that he loves Elena. Jeremy has noticed their rings, and Clay tells him they are engaged. Jeremy tells Clay that they don’t get to love and dismisses Clay’s suggestion that he can live away from Stonehaven with Elena in the city. It makes me curious about how those of the pack were “born” when there are apparently no women in their lives.
In desperation, Clay transforms and bites Elena. I loved the scene in which Elena notices the “dog” come in the room and is immediately attracted to his beauty, scooting across the couch she’s sitting on to get closer to him and make friends. While the CGI wolves are not perfect, I thought this scene was done very well as you can see the wolf listening to Jeremy and almost obeying. Bryk and Vandervoort both do a wonderful job reacting to something that was clearly not there when they were filming.
As Elena succumbs to the bite, the possibility of her surviving the change clearly passes across his face. Jeremy sends Clay away while Elena goes through the first change. Whether this is punishment or actually mercy is unclear. Jeremy doesn’t expect Elena to survive, so sending Clay away so he doesn’t have to watch her die in agony seems more like compassion to me. Jeremy stays with her and talks her through the change, telling her not to fight the pain. Of course, this also solidifies him as her alpha, he directs her through the change and also ensures her loyalty as his direction helps save her life. I loved Bryk’s small smile when she does survive.
Vandervoort is excellent as she awakens after the first change. Her very body language has changed and her awakening and looking around the cage seem much more canine than human. It’s a nice parallel to watching her transition to wolf the first time – the wolf is unsteady as it shakes and gets used to four legs and then we see her rise from the bed and regain her human legs. But she’s changed. She convinces Clay to let her out of the cage, knocks him out and escapes. Clay rescues her and brings her back to Stonehaven. He tells her he knows she’s a survivor and that she can’t live out in the world... yet. He also tells her that Jeremy will teach her. I hope we get more of the backstory soon!
In the present, Clay apologizes to Elena for biting her, telling her he did it because he loves her. In a way, he’s right. It’s hard to fathom how any of them can have a long term relationship if one of them isn’t a wolf – it’s why Jeremy said they couldn’t have love. The scene is a nice mirror to the scene in which Clay bites Elena – with Elena and Clay seated opposite each other.
Daniel Santos (Michael Luckett) arrives at Stonehaven. We learn his brother was killed trying to take out Jeremy and that Elena bit off most of Santos’ right ear. Like all the other wolves, Santos is also drawn to her. Santos wants protection. It’s interesting that he characterizes himself as a lone wolf not a mutt. He tells the pack that the mutts are creating a psycho army in retaliation for Clay’s brutality in dealing with the mutts. It’s entirely possible that Clay was brutal because he was acting out after Elena left him. Santos is not wrong in saying that Clay acts impulsively – it’s what he did when he bit Elena after all. Santos also says that the Queen – Elena – can do whatever she wants – this seems a clear indication that Elena can choose whatever side she wants as all sides want her.
The mutts continue to work against the pack by planting Braxton’s (Evan Buliung) body on Stonehaven property. They also recruit a recently released pedophile to their ranks. Victor is played by Patrick Garrow who was also on XIII: The Series as was Bryk. Cain (Noah Danby) meets with him and suggests he get revenge on one of the girls who sent him to prison – and that girl is Elena!
As always there are very nice subtle touches that remind us that these folks are not entirely human. When agitated, they pace the room like caged animals – Elena in the first scene and Clay when Jeremy is trying to calm him while the others search for Braxton’s body. When Santos arrives at Stonehaven, Holt does a wonderful job conveying Clay’s pent up rage. Jeremy controls him through eye contact and a small shake of the head. Once again, Clay shows his submission through dropping his eyes.
Elena is roped into being a bridesmaid by Philip (Paul Greene) and Diane (Natalie Brown). Diane continues to grow suspicious of Elena, but Philip brushes her off. Meanwhile, William (James McGowan) has somehow obtained the video of Elena in wolf form killing the coyote that attacked Logan (Michael Xavier) and asks Philip to use it in the vodka campaign. It’s pretty obvious that someone taped it for him. It’s still unclear what he hopes to gain, however. Of course, there’s no advertising campaign that’s actually going to show an animal killing another to sell its product. Philip learns that the Estonian word for wolf is hunt. Williams is concerned about the rights to use the video tape and Philip says he’ll track the shooter down. All of these clues – hunt, shoot – make me wonder if William isn’t a werewolf hunter. But it would also seem that he knows of the link between the wolf in the video and Philip, so he must know that the wolf is Elena. It’s definitely an interesting storyline.
In the final scene, Elena says goodbye to Jeremy. She tells him that she will always come when he calls – she will remain loyal to the pack, but she asks him not to call, to let her go. She tells Jeremy that Philip is the man she can trust and that she used to think she could trust Clay. It’s unclear exactly what made her stop trusting Clay – was it the bite or something else? Jeremy tries to interrupt her and says “I think it’s time I...” I have to wonder if maybe the misunderstanding between Clay and Elena has something more to do with Jeremy. She also tells him that he’s the closest thing she’s ever had to a father. Bryk is just outstanding in this scene and is clearly moved by Elena’s words. As always, he rules by love and compassion, not force, and he lets her go. The final shot of him framed in the doorway flanked by Clay and Nick is a perfect final tableau.
What did you think of the episode? Did you find Elena’s backstory satisfying? What do you make of Williams? Do you think the wedding is going to be a disaster? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Great review. I truly enjoyed this episode, and the backstory was not only welcome but done extremely well. It was a solid hour of tv. Can't wait for more.
ReplyDeleteElena not trusting clay was because she trusted and loved clay and he betrayed her by biting her with out her consent. The behavior might have come from growing up abandoned. I think he imprinted on her before. He changed her whole life i would be upset too. In the book i am glad they changed pete and logan dying. About the wolf commercial, they are in canada so that might make a difference.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I completely agree. The backstory told a chapter and really left us wanting more - they've already hinted at some of it - such as Pete teaching her history. And of course, now I want to know about her history with Victor - *shudder*. I'm really impressed by how solid this show is. It definitely has me curious about reading the books!
ReplyDeleteLast episode, Clay said that he and Elena solved many of their problems in bed at Stonehaven. She also worked with him chasing mutts for some time - I don't think she would have done either of those things if she couldn't trust him, so I think something else must have happened. Logan dies? That's a pretty big spoiler! I'm in Canada and that commercial would NOT be allowed on the air (I'm also in Entertainment law). No firm would show an animal being harmed anywhere in the world because all the animal rights activists would come after them!
ReplyDeleteThe thing I don't understand (like Lisa just said) is that they had to get along to chase mutts together before she leaves, so why she's pissed at him in the present? It should be over now. I really don't understand that point.
ReplyDeleteAnd I hate the back and forth between Stonehaven and Philip, I wish his storyline was already over, if they want a love triangle so badly, they should go for a Clay/Elena/Nick one, or Clay/Elena/Logan, I don't really care. But just get rid of Philip, please and thank you.
In the book, Elena spends most of it being unable to forgive Clay for biting her. When you see the scenes of her being in the cage after being bitten, it actually is horrifying. It's terrifying to have gone home with the man you love and trust and suddenly you wake up in a cage in the basement. So, it's understandable why Elena has many issues with Clay. I thought they did an amazing job of showing those scenes.
ReplyDeleteI thought Philip wasn't really fleshed out enough in the book, and the tv show is better in that way. They seem to have given him a career that will now tie into the wolves with the ad campaign.
I actually like the show much better than the book. I think the casting is perfect. Can't wait for the new ep.
Yes, in the book both Pete and Logan die. I don't know if they will take it that far with the show. The show is doing their own interpretation of the book and there are some changes. But at the same time, they seem to be following the basic story of the book.
ReplyDeleteShe made it clear in the last ep that she is blaming Clay for everything
ReplyDeletenow. And she wants to go back to her fake human life. It is confusing
on how they wrote her character because she spends so much of the book
not forgiving Clay at all for biting her.
I'm hoping they
follow the book when it comes to Philip. In the book, she does end up
leaving Philip for Clay. They are going to follow the scene where she
changes in front of Philip, that's already in the ep spoilers/ep guide
on IMDB. So he will see it. I don't know if he will react the same way
as the book version.
It makes me nervous that both Antony and Logan - the actors - are only listed as recurring - not regular....
ReplyDeleteThat's what makes me think something else must have happened. She must have essentially gotten over his turning her and doesn't trust him about something else...
ReplyDeleteI'm still liking Philip even if just because he is protecting her privacy against his sister and mother. He is listed as a regular, so doubt he's going anywhere too soon - but I have to wonder if he will be a casualty by the end of the season - thus driving Elena back to the pack and Clay...
With this new layer of Victor to Elena's past, it makes Clay taking her home and biting her and locking her in a cage even more horrific. No doubt those past experiences of pain and terror are what gave her the strength to survive the turn.
ReplyDeleteI'm really curious how this twist with Philip is going to play out!
I'm assuming Williams is some kind of hunter - maybe he's going to recruit Philip and he'll end up as a bad guy.... I hope not though. From what we've seen of him so far, I would see him as being understanding - which I'm assuming he isn't in the books.
ReplyDeletePhilip was written very badly in the book and doesn't even appear much. In the book, Elena starts sleeping with Clay almost immediately when she goes back to Stonehaven. And she starts to call Philip less and less. By the end of the book, she is ordered by Jeremy to go back to the apartment with Clay for her safety. And it created a nasty atmosphere where Philip met Clay and immediately suspected there was a relationship going on with Elena and Clay. When Philip does see Elena change, he pretends he doesn't remember it, but he does. And he's afraid of her and it kind of killed their relationship right there. And by then, Elena already made her choice to go home with Clay. I didn't like how it was written in the book at all. For me, the last hundred pages of the book, or even a bit more than that, I didn't like any of it. I like the tv show much, much better. But I have no idea where the show is headed with how the Philip ship will play out.
ReplyDelete‘Bitten’ –
ReplyDeleteA stellar episode; Laura V knocked it out of the park with her performance. The scene with her
waking up in the cage was painful to watch but absolutely mesmerizing; I truly ached for Elena not understanding what was going on. Lisa I didn’t notice before, but you’re right, the time she wakes up
after her change it was - well almost predatory.
Loved the flashback scenes and how the episode transitions between present and past - very seamless. The attention to detail was amazing; I think I saw a vase of red lilacs in Clay’s university office. To show Elena brought her own personal touch to his office. I don’t think they could have done any better with the scene when he tells her he doesn’t want to pack. I wish I could bottle the heat those two give off, we sure could use it this time of year. Clay and Elena are truly the heart of the show for me.
Nick continues to entertain me no end; pretending to let Elmer Fudd get the best of him. Way to
take one for the team Nick!
I’ve come to the point where I personally don’t need an explanation of why Clay bit her. It’s all part of
Elena’s journey and the conflict she needs to deal with. It was a rash act and it forever changed her. I think this is where the Phillip interaction will play a big part for her. How is she going to handle it? Will she be able to reconcile with herself and Clay - maybe not forget but forgive? I’m excited to take the ride with her.
Greyston H is just nailing Clay IMHO. He is bringing a lot of subtlety to the character. I loved the
scene when he’s pacing while talking to Jeremy. Clay’s ‘no’ when Jeremy asked if he was the metaphorical tree stump was priceless. You know Clay just wanted to rip Daniels head off and was just waiting for the command to pounce.
I loved the flashbacks, tho I wish they had done a small flashback per episode, covered her bite in episode 5 then the aftermath in the episodes after that, the flashbacks are great but placed in episodes in a very odd way. Loved this episode tho, I ship Clay and Elena so hard.
ReplyDeleteHe could definitely be a hunter, but my working theory is that he's part of the Russian pack and they're making some sort of move. They've already mentioned the Italian pack and sort of set up "others", but I can't wait to find out. Either way, I love that they've added a new side story that has nothing to do with the book.
ReplyDeleteYou just pointed out something I never noticed before. How can she be so mad at Clay when she is doing the same thing with Phillip that Clay did to her? Minus the bite obviously, she is lying to Philip about what she is like Clay did.. how can she not understand Clay's POV when she herself is doing exactly the same.
ReplyDeleteThe something else...at least I think, since the show has been changing a few things here and there...was her killing Jose Carter. That freaked her out and made her feel like a monster, and it revived all her old pains and insecurities regarding Clay, her bite, the life she now has, etc... Of course, with this show, there could be a whole new twist or set of twists, and I love that. At this point, anything is fair game. I'm fascinated with the way the show is following the main story of the book, but also changing things, yet it is still "Bitten". How in the heck are they managing that balancing act? lol
ReplyDeletePhilip was never a triangle in the book or meant to be a triangle. He was simply a part of her new human life. The struggle was internal and about Elena accepting who she is, so Philip served his point perfectly IMO. TV Philip is awesome! I really like him (though I want his Elena-mance to end quickly, lol). His side story is a nice touch.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but we're only at episode 6, so who knows right?
ReplyDeleteI'm really, really loving Greyston's Clay, and that surprises me because I thought he would be the hardest for me to accept. It's the subtle little things he is doing, like the body language and looks, etc, that are completely drawing me in and accepting him as Clay. Great job. He is even softening him a bit, but for some reason it's working. Man I love this show, lol! New episode tonight, yay!
ReplyDeleteI really think that you should eventually read the books, because everyone should read those books, lol, but you'll be delightfully surprised at how different they are. The same, yet different. The show is fascinating me with the way they are accomplishing this. Great stuff all around. :)
ReplyDeleteThe difference is freewill and the Definition of normal for her. clay made the choice to become Wolf for her it was implied women can't turn our have not. So he could have killed her right there. That is pretty selfish. But he grew up pretty rough from the story of the Swamp. I am tired of Elena saying every week she is going back to Toronto the coming back
ReplyDeleteMy vote would be William's is Malcolm Danvers. The King moves one strategic square at a time.
ReplyDeleteThey cannot kill Logan!!!!
ReplyDeleteI checked the IMDb site for Bitten and the actor who plays Logan is listed as being in 12 episodes which hopefully is a good sign (I think the episode that he misses has already passed). Elena, Clay, Nick, Jeremy and Philip (!) are listed as being in all 13 episodes, so I guess that Philip is here to stay and Antonio is listed as being in 6 episodes which makes me nervous. I really like him...even actually like him more than his son Nick. So if both Phillip and Logan are around to the end, does that mean that they're deviating substantially from the book??
ReplyDeleteI don't think they will. The spoilers I've read on IMDB seemed to show he will be injured, but live. Antonio will also be injured, but worse.
ReplyDeleteThat would be my guess - but I'm not sure I would actually classify that as a trust issue. Still wondering if there is some other secret to come out... I love that they have fans of the books wondering too though!
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Philip is so far up the credits - third (?) billed, makes me think he must be going to be a regular character. Maybe they are also playing it safe to see if he is a popular character, so they have him under contract? I'm torn because so far I kind of like him - even though I'm totally rooting for Clay now... From the interview I did with Armstrong, they are going to deviate and she's ok with it...
ReplyDeleteIf I had to pick between Antonio and Logan, I'd probably pick Antonio - I just love the dynamic between him and Jeremy - and with Nick!
ReplyDeleteI like this theory!
ReplyDeleteLove the way they are expanding this universe!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this Philip would react the same way... I'm sure he would pick up on something between Elena and Clay immediately - but I wonder if he would be that freaked out about the change that he would deny seeing it or it would make him afraid of her...
ReplyDeleteI'm so torn! I'm definitely teamClay - but I really like Philip too!
ReplyDeleteWelcome and thanks! Agree with everything you say here - and I noticed the lilacs too! I'm really loving the storytelling on the show and how they are able to build in the backstory without interrupting our forward momentum. The thing I really liked about that scene with Jeremy and Clay is it also subtly reminds us that these aren't just dumb animals - they use and understand metaphors - Jeremy is an accomplished painter and Clay is a university professor.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Holt is particularly nailing it! Though the entire cast is fantastic. You know you are on to a great show when the hour just zips by - and that happens every week!
Holt is fantastic! He had me hooked on Clay by the second episode!
ReplyDeleteI think they have a really hard job to pull off giving us enough back story to move forward without stalling the forward momentum. It does keep us wanting more in both directions! Or me anyway....
ReplyDeleteThe IMDB ep description says he claims he doesn't remember, but then.......And that's where the description stops. So I don't know. But I'm sure it will be a much better scene than the book's.
ReplyDeleteSame here....I'm not always a fan of shows that focus heavily on back stories, but in this case, I really enjoy watching how Elena's relationship with the pack evolved.
ReplyDeleteGreat review Lisa! I recently binge watched the whole series on Netflix (I'm in the US) and am totally hooked! I haven't read the books but have thought about it since finishing the season. After reading the comments here, I'm torn about reading it now - maybe I'll wait until after the series is over (hopefully, many seasons from now!) and just enjoy the show for what it is without any of the inevitable comparisons.
ReplyDeleteWithout being too spoilery...you do get answers on Elena's lingering anger issues, there are deaths - one of which made me actually scream at my computer, and the Philip/Elena/Clay thing is resolved by the end of the season.
Based on the comments below, the writers have added a few more twists in later episodes that are not in the book so I look forward to your reviews and seeing the comments - none of my friends watch this show so I'm going crazy with no one to talk to about it!
Thanks! These reviews are actually re-posts from when the show first aired. I get the feeling that most people who have read the books are pretty happy with the adaptation. I suspect the show may diverge a bit more from the books as we go along. You might also want to check out my recent interview with Daegan Frykling. The show has a great - and very active fanbase as you can see from the comments here - they are easy to find on Twitter - and the whole pack gets together to howl at the moon!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh - I see...wasn't sure when it aired in other countries so I didn't wasn't sure if this was your first time thru :-)
ReplyDeleteI'll see if I can find your interview - I'm trapped at work so I have some time and I'm on Twitter so I will see if I can find the cast to follow and maybe find some fans too!
It aired on SyFy in the US and Space in Canada earlier this year. CTV in Canada is one of the big 3 networks here, so getting a run there is great for the show.
ReplyDeleteAhhh I see. So some shows run at the same time in Canada and the US? I have to wait for Lost Girl so I guess I just assumed that was the norm. I know Reign airs in Canada a day ahead of the US but I thought that was an exception. Learn something new everyday!
