Beauty and the Beast - Episode 2.14 - Redemption - Review

Feb 19, 2014

Well, this was a fabulous episode - I liked it better than last week's.  I feel that after so many months of waiting, VinCat are growing so much closer than they have been in ages.  Even though "Redemption" did not end with them getting back together, there were some lusciously romantic moments between them that emphasized the strength of Vincent and Catherine's bond against seemingly insurmountable odds.

The use of the dream sequences to bookend the episode could not have been better.  I loved this on so many levels.  The way we weren't sure at first if each scene was reality or dreaming was incredibly suspenseful. The revelation that Cat and Vincent are both worried about the same basic problems in their relationship, that both are deeply troubled and haunted by the idea of each other - perfect.  Additionally, how awesome was it to have each of them express, in the dreams, the ideas that they never give voice to in real life?  In Vincent's dream, for example, seeing Catherine address her desire for Vincent was a bit of a welcome change after so many Cat/Gabe episodes!

Given the continued theme of two exes still in love, I'll be using some lyrics from Natalie Imbruglia's "Fun" in this review.

"So long
I've been waiting
To sing this song
Not sure
If it's worth it anymore
Working anymore

People always
Ask about you
People always
Want to talk about you
Sometimes when I
Sleep I think about you
With your new someone"*

After Gabe faked his death to give Sam a chance to pursue his wicked plans and hopefully give the gang a lead on the mysterious billionaire kingpin they've been chasing, this week we got to go to Gabe's funeral.  The interactions between Cat and Tess, where they debated the necessity of expressing grief to continue fooling Sam, were too funny - especially when J.T. showed up and Tess snapped at him to act sad.  Vincent sat right down next to Cat, igniting waves of chemistry that did not die down in the least throughout the episode.

We also got this classic Vincent/J.T. exchange:

J.T.: "I can't believe you're gonna let her walk away."
Vincent: "Well I'm not about to tell her at her boyfriend's funeral."
J.T.: "But he's not really dead!"

Poor Gabe was a bit put out to hear how few people showed up at his funeral, but he didn't have too much time to get bogged down in that, since it soon became apparent that Sam was plucking former orphans from the home where Gabe grew up to turn into beasts.  While Gabe was forced to remain in hiding, Cat and Vincent headed to the hospital where an innocent victim of Sam's nefarious injections hovered near death.  Taking on responsibility for saving this man brought out Vincent's need to recapture his former identity as Doctor Vincent Keller, the sympathetic and heroic human, the man who might be able to win Cat's love back.

It was fantastic to see Vincent get to return, however briefly, to the role of a doctor, quickly jumping into action to save a random patient, as well as the wrongly identified Jacob.  Saving others, whether as a beast or as a human, is what Vincent was born to do.  Someday, hopefully he will learn that there can be a balance between these two sides of himself.  I think his hatred of his beast side is ultimately unhealthy, both psychologically and in terms of his ability to control the beast within.  When a person tries to completely smother a big part of themselves, inevitably it will reemerge more out of control than ever.

Naturally, however, even after Cat learned from our friend the VinCat shipper J.T. (he's the man!) that Vincent means to go "beast cold turkey" to win her back, Catherine still coerced her ex to beast out again.  Why?  Because, of course, Gabe had to go and ruin the pretense of his death about two seconds after the gang went to all that trouble to convince Sam of its being true.  I mean seriously, Gabe?  I guess the only way I can sympathize with this dumb, rookie move on his part is to realize that he's been overcompensating for how intimidated he is by Vincent's place in Cat's life.  Wanting to help out and save the day is a natural extension of these feelings of apprehension about his relationship with Cat.  Sorry, Gabe, but this romance is doomed.  When the consummation of your relationship happens off-screen because no one wants to see it, that's just not a good sign!

I'm really enjoying Tom Everett Scott as Sam, not least of all because as an actor who usually plays straight-laced goody-two-shoes characters, he's able to incorporate that persona into his villainy.  Sam's ability to lure his test subjects with his smiling mask of decency is part of what makes him so successful and frightening.

Ever the multi-tasker, Vincent managed to save the dying man in the hospital and help the gang take on Sam and his new beast, Jacob, both of whom made a few attempts to stick Gabe with the beast serum needle. Well, Gabe, ya could've stayed home!  Unfortunately, Cat had to shoot and kill Jacob to save Gabe from that needle, in a moment of anguish for her that will have emotional fallout going forward.  After all, she later reflected, she did not hesitate to shoot a beast who was also essentially an unwilling and helpless victim of Sam's manipulations.  All of this angst snowballed into an intriguing confrontation with Gabe towards the end of the hour.

It seems that Gabe has finally reached the end of his rope with VinCat, although he has repeatedly acknowledged that clearly, Vincent isn't going anywhere.  So how exactly is Cat supposed to remove Vincent from her life when he's such an integral part of her ongoing adventures?  And why should she have to deal with Gabe's problems right after she had to shoot someone and is miserable from that experience?  Even as someone who enjoys the Gabe character, I'm starting to think he's letting his insecurities push him too far (or maybe his sweater's just too tight).  However, since they're liable to be yet another factor pushing Cat back into Vincent's arms, I must ultimately approve of his jealous, silly declarations.  Also, this?

Gabe: "It feels like there are three of us in this relationship and sooner or later that is gonna have to be resolved, Catherine. Vincent has to go."

Yes, it's going to be resolved, alright, Gabe.  But not the way you think!

The segue into Cat's dream sequence at the end was fascinating.  The blurry, fragmented and dark imagery of her driving to Vincent's reflected Cat's conflicted state of mind and hinted that we were departing reality.  And this last scene?  Wow.  As much as I loved Vincent's dream from the beginning of the episode, this was even better.

Hearing Vincent declare "You know what I think about that? I think screw Gabe" was amazing!  It's about time that, even subconsciously, he and Cat stop tiptoeing around the extremely obvious.  And hearing him say "I love you" was so exciting, though unfortunately, a physical tussle with Cat soon led to his falling to the floor, mortally injured - right before a horrified Cat woke up in bed.

"Didn't we have fun?
I know it hurts like hell
When you can't be with someone

Didn't we have fun?
Though it hurts like hell
Yeah, I don't want to forget
I don't want to forget"*

When Cat woke up, etched across her face were all the worries that got in the way of her relationship with Vincent the first time around: the fear, shared by Vincent, that ultimately they are only going to hurt one another.  This terror that their love is epically doomed does not in any way negate the overwhelming and potentially redemptive power of the love itself.  That's why this week's episode title was so brilliant: Vincent's working hard at redeeming himself while Cat questions whether their bond is ultimately capable of being redemptive or merely destructive.  And that conversation she had with Bob Reynolds earlier in the episode, with her father urging her to sever all bonds with Vincent in the deadliest terms, is not easing her anxiety.

The fact that Cat's in bed with Gabe at the end is meaningless compared with the unbreakable connection she feels with Vincent.  We have to hope that soon, all remaining barriers between Cat and Vincent will fall away.  After all this build-up, we can be certain that this reunion is going to be good.

*lyrics are taken from the song "Fun" by Natalie Imbruglia.

  1. Thank you for this nice review ! I also really like this episode, especially the dream sequences. I can't wait to see episode 15.

  2. Thanks! The dream sequences made this episode really special...hopefully, we can see some of the positive aspects of them happen "in real life" for the characters soon. :)

  3. After a very long time, I tuned into an episode of Beauty and the Beast and I was pleasantly surprised how much things have improved in this show and fallen into perspective since the last time I watched it. I wasn't very drawn to the main storyline i.e. the whole Sam turning people into beasts and his revenge maybe because this is the first time I am seeing him? But I loved the sides of our main characters which were brought out in this episode.
Like you, the dream sequences were some of my favourites because while Vincent's dream gave him the will to be a better man worthy of Cat's affections again, Cat's dream haunted her on what it would be like if she indeed decided to go ahead with Gabe (and kill Vincent, this has been disturbing her ever since her meeting with Bob which I think was another excellent scene).
While I liked mostly all scenes in this episode (even a Gabe-Cat one at the beginning when she meets him right after the funeral), I would like to make an honourable mention to the last VinCat conversation just before Gabe takes her away. The role reversal with Vincent not being able to kill the correct Jacob because he's a man along with a beast and Cat shooting without batting an eyelash put them both in each other's shoes. While Vincent realised what Cat must be going through when he was busy being a killing machine, Cat saw how the lines between Vincent's human and beast blurred when he was to kill someone (and none of them were innocent). Now that they both have understood each other by being in place of each other, I think they can finally start to truly accept each other and not be bogged down by what they used to share.

  4. Though I had to use my dictionary a lot, I liked the review. I say the same about the episode. It was great, among the greatest sofar in season 2. The nightmares VinCat had were breathtaking. I really like that the chemistry between the 2 has been coming back the last episodes. When they sat next to each other in church you could feel it. Even through the screen. Beauty and the Beast is the best show I´ve ever watched.

  5. Great review! I agree with you, Gabe is finally starting to let his insecurities show and his jealousy of Vincent. I also loved how the episode started with Vincent's dream and ended with Catherine's. Nice touch!

  6. Thanks, and awesome perspectives on the show! I agree that Cat got caught in a moral gray area she'd never felt before, and could see things from Vincent's POV. Fascinating stuff.

  9. Love this review! Thank you! This episode was really good and as always, leaves me in anguish, because I want more! The dream sequences were perfect, and I felt really needed, if only bc its a little reminder to us that its #VinCat forever, and that we shouldn't lose hope in them as viewers. Eventually they will be back together! Also love their chemistry together, even when they r at odds. I always feel like I am right there with them when #VinCat have scenes together. Thats how strong their chemistry is! I compare it to Twilight/Robsten chemistry. Can't wait for March 3rd!

  10. Great, review Virginia I love your love of this show that I've got to admit I'm so invested in, the problem I'm having is they've virtually destroyed what was a very strong and independent character like Catherine Chandler, I'd even say she was somewhat of a role model but know it seems as if Gabe would ask her to jump, she'd say how high, but and that's a big but I'm thinking that's about to change, how dare he give her an ultimatum on that hunk of man V it ain't gonna work, which leads me to have hope, the Gabe show could be winding down, I hope, again enjoyed your take on the episode, overall I loved it as well!!!

  14. Thanks for the review and the positive spin. Overall the show did move forward, but the inconsistency between the writers is frustrating. What did they do with the real Cat? She must be a clone : ). And Tess "I don't care who you're with as long as you're getting some" attitude seems out of place. I little humor is nice bit it seems this writer wants to make it a comedy. On a positive note, the live+7 increased 100%, that put veiwership well over a million (Check my math). Still holding out for season 3. This show has so much potential, the cast is great.

  16. I loved the episode except once again, the Cat and Gabe scenes. It is all not natural.Better to have her with someone who had not tried to kill Vincent.

  18. I loved your so optimistic Review. You know, I have optimism about BATB too. If not was this, I would have already stopped watching this season.
I loved the dreams of VinCat that mean what one want other - it was a delight to see Vincent say "I Love you".
The Vincent literally get off the deep end - it was good to see your sweetness and humanity back. Eu never felt anger from Vincent, I always understood the why from their attitudes. I loved the help of JT to VinCat - Vincent could not have a better friend.
There are unfortunate situations that happen in life for good. I talk about Cat kill Jacob, it was good for her try to understand how Vincent felt when he was in a similar situation.
How I'm optimistic, I'll summarize briefly what I don't liked: the essence of Cat still half lost; Tess support the relationship from Gabe and Cat and of course "Cat with Gabe".
I can't wait to see the reconciliation of VinCat. I hope have a beautiful scene!

this is the first time he says "I love you" right? in 1x14 he told her "I am so in love with you" I know it was a dream but I got goose bumps when he said that :) then replayed it several times... and Cat screaming just makes me laugh every time... love that scene too!

  20. I'd like the real Catherine Chandler to appear in the next episode - now that Vincent is trying to choose man v beast, its Cat who seems to be acting in ways in direct contradiction for her strong & independent character. That she didn't seem to react to Gabe's demand that Vincent is a beast and has to go was so uncharacteristic and a bit hypocritical as she has always been able judge Vincent and to tell Vincent off but nothing with Gabe - he's made of teflon it seems to Cat & Tess. So much for Gabe's supportive and understanding approach. What irony would it be if he somehow is injected with the serum by Cat in order to save Vincent before the end of season 2? That would be sweet!

  21. Great review. I like reading your optimistic point of view. I'm really hoping that the bad Gabe comes back in the next episode! I really miss that guy...

  22. I liked this episode too mostly due to the dream scenes, JT & Vincat interaction. Cat though still drove me nuts this episode. How many times did she kiss Gabe? I didn't count but found myself says yuk over & over. They just have no chemistry and I just can't buy her trusting him enough for a romantic relationship after their past. I know it's happening from what we saw this episode but I hate it. I also don't like her constantly running to Vincent to be her bodyguard and her boyfriends bodyguard even though she became aware he wants to stop being a beast. She seems so self centered lately. I like her but don't like how she's finding herself the last two episodes. Wishy washy, self centered & in denial. Didn't like her comment to Vincent either"leave that to the real doctors". Lately it seems she wants Vincent to be a beast for her more than a man. Make up your mind Cat & lose Gabe. Your better on your own if you still need self discovery.

  23. Thanks! Interesting point - I think "good" Gabe has quickly dissolved into a whiner, so I wouldn't mind seeing his dark side come back either!

  24. Yes, I remember that he never did say "I Love You" to Cat. As you, I replayed this scene several times. We know he love her, but I can't wait hear him say this to Cat in reality :-)

  27. Thank you for another positive and constructive review.
It was indeed another fantastic episode. Highlight for me was Vincent again, watching him struggle with his beast side and trying to redeem himself at the sanw time is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Its amazing how he is able to evolve so effortlessly episode from episode becoming again the Vincent we all love.
Shame we didn't get any JT + Tess moments. ..hopefully they'll get to see them in the coming episode.
Impatiently waiting for episode 15 where hopefully we'll get to see VinCat reunion and Gabe out of the picture completely. We have had enough of him m already.

  28. OMG thank you thank you thank you. Your last paragraph "The fact that Cat's in bed with Gabe at the end is meaningless compared with the unbreakable connection she feels with Vincent. We have to hope that soon, all remaining barriers between Cat and Vincent will fall away. After all this build-up, we can be certain that this reunion is going to be good." is just poetry to this Beasties ears. I just wish a lot of other Beasties saw it like this. Loved the article, review and positiveness you are showing for the show. I have loved the whole season, this ep, was just more icing on this Beasties cake

  30. Thanks Virginia ~ there was so much to love in this episode after last week's V-Day disappointment. It was so heartwarming to hear Vincent say those 3 magic words to Cat at the end even if it was a dream ~ subconsciously under her eyerolling shield of "I'm with Gabe" protestations she must realize that he loves her ~ I am with you on Gag giving her the ultimatum ~ hallelujah! He just signed his own death warrant with Cat sooner rather than later I hope :o)

  31. Great review! Smart and interesting and of course, JT is the man! Best character for me along with Tess. JT&T all the way!

  32. Jen, I totally agree with you on the sizzling chemistry between Vincent and Catherine. I've always said that's the reason why they did draw me into the story and I got so addicted to this TV show. In the almost kiss scene in the dream there's so much more chemistry between V and C than in a real kiss between C and Gabe. They just have zero chemistry. I hope to see Vincat getting back together in ep 215.
Virginia, I love your insightful and positive review. Thanks!
