  1. I don't even want to discuss this John and Astrid business because I don't want to believe they are so desperate for Stephen and Cara who make no sense as a romantic couple, that they are willing to create some John and Astrid story.

  2. I'd rather they go John and Astrid. They are way more likable and relatable imo than Cara and Stephen.

  3. whats wrong with John? :O

  4. Ofcourse. That is my point. I can't stand the Cara and Stephen attempt. So I fear they are trying to make that happen so they are pushing John to Astrid. John and Cara are much better.

  6. Wait, what? Has John been shot?

  7. There were a few people who joked about John/Astrid after they gave each other brief looks at Stephen's dinner party (1x09), but... now it's an actual thing? What are the writers smoking? The worst thing for this show would be to turn the love triangle into a quadrangle, instead of forgetting about that crap and upping the ante in the A-plot.

  8. Not to mention Astrid and Stephen are still in *high school* (for all the show actually acknowledges this fact) and that just makes either a Cara/Stephen pairing or a John/Astrid pairing a little *no* to me right now.

  9. Yes, that's definitely another problem. Stephen and Astrid may be old enough that neither of these relationships constitute statutory rape (or would, in Astrid's case), but it still rubs me the wrong way. I don't think the show has stated John and Cara's ages but they look around 25-28 to me, while the other two should be 18 at most (are they seniors? Can't remember this being addressed, either).

John and Cara, to me, have great chemistry and were instantly believable as a couple in the pilot, so I really wish we didn't have to put up with those CW-ish romantic entanglements. Also, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with this but if I were the showrunner, I'd retool the show to make Luke/John the lead over Robbie/Stephen. I'm biased and all but I find the former far more charismatic, likable and interesting. Robbie doesn't have that leading man quality about him, in my opinion. Perhaps it has to do with his limited experience as an actor, IDK, but that's just the state of things.

  10. That would make perfect sense to me. John is a deeper, more conflicted character, with a more interesting storyline, and more interesting character journey. It'd probably draw more viewers. Plus, in the original The Tomorrow People, for all Stephen was a main character, he wasn't in every episode. John was.

  11. I have to admit I started out liking Stephen best, but was won over by John in no time. I blamed the writing and the way they were portraying Stephen, but I also have come to feel Luke Mitchell brings a more subtle and nuanced performance to his character that even the occasional less-than-stellar writing can't diminish.

  12. John is totally a deeper and more conflicted character! I feel cheesy bringing this up, but if you've ever watched Dark Angel, John's relationship with Ultra reminds me very much of Alec's relationship with Manticore with all the crap they put him through to make him a soldier and an assassin. John's just even cooler, imo, because he left and built this whole resistance and haven that wouldn't have stood a chance without his experience. I started watching for Stephen but John was what really won me to the show.

  13. People usually talk about Mary Sues (and there are far too many of those), but I feel Stephen is the male version of that, Marty Sue/Gary Stu. The show makes him out to be perfect because even his flaws (being incredibly naive and reckless, wanting to do the noble thing even when it's ridiculously dangerous) are presented as a positive. He's this archetype of the innocent, pure-hearted young hero who always does the right thing and never "lets the darkness consume him" (gag). They even portray him as the one who makes Cara confident and self-possessed, despite the fact that she was as much that person if not more at the very beginning. Plus, he slept with Cara, a girl who's in a serious relationship with someone else, and beyond John's anger at him it was more or less whitewashed. If the show spent half as much time on the wrongness of that as it does with John's lies, for example, I'd have less of a problem with Stephen.

And then you have John, who is realistically flawed and screws up sometimes even if his heart is in the right place. He prioritized survival and staying safe over helping new breakouts in the beginning, and then, of course, you have all the thing he's lied about, from his ability to kill to the fact that he killed Roger. He was trying to protect both himself and his people, yes, but ended up doing more harm than good because he ISN'T perfect like we keep being told Stephen is. On top of that, you have his love/hate relationship with Jedikiah that is probably the most intriguing one on the show - as much as they're mortal enemies, when push comes to shove, it doesn't feel like either of them will be able to seriously hurt the other. So John's character has more dimensions, the show is more honest about who he is and acknowledges his faults unlike Stephen's, and he's played by a better actor. This definitely didn't turn out the way they intended.
