The penultimate day of this competition, and we have the semi-finals for you! Make sure to vote; it WILL matter!
The rules are as follows:
1. Two episodes go head to head for 24 hours. The episode that emerges as winner will go through to the next round.
2. Vote for your favourite episode, and tell us what you voted for.
3. Tell others about the competition.
4. Be respectful. This is a competition, but be friendly.
OK, so I made a mistake in the polls when I posted before. Shall we try again?
Four competitors left, from four different shows. We have Game of Thrones's 'The Rains of Castamere' against Castle's 'Still'. We then have Beauty and the Beast's 'Kidnapped' against The Mentalist's 'Red John'. We can only have two finalists. Who will they be?

My votes were more so against the opponents.
While I believe Rains Of Castemere is a great episode, I am sick of the cyber love in for it. It wasn't as great as the internet is telling me, repeatedly. I don't even consider it 1 of the top 3 episodes of the year....but every Best Of list has it in its top 3.
On the other side, never watched The Mentalist. However, voting for anything against Bland And The Beast is a must, so I felt compelled to vote for it.
If I have to pick a winner out of these final 4, I'll go with Castle, which is saying a lot considering that's probably only about the 4th best Castle episode of 2013.

ReplyDeleteI think it's hilarious that BATB fans take everything so personally. Reading through the comments, I don't see anyone spreading hate or bashing other people. The only thing I see are people saying that they don't feel like BATB should be in the TOP4 and I personally share their sentiment.

For instance - I have voted for one political party because I was against the other. Nothing against BatB, but you are knocking someone for their beliefs here just as other people on this same page have knocked you for yours.

ReplyDeleteYou know i used to love Batb, I'm hunter so of course Supernatural comes first, but Batb had something in the first season that I always wanted to come back, but now... In my opinion the show just got lost, i don't think Batb this season deserve to be in top 4 too. This doesn't make me a hater or anything, just means that Batb lost what i used to like. It's a shame because it had a lot of potecial, but it seems to me, that the writers really want the show to get cancelled. All they say is "Beasties have the power" But if they don't give a good story how on Earth the show will have more viewers? Sometimes, i have to agree, some beasties misunderstood and take this too serious But don't get them wrong they are just trying to save the show hey love so much, Its a hard work so they give everything they can for the show to get some visibility, which means all the polls Batb is in it.

We can show some respect for everybody's vote.Just vote for your favourite show and give a positive comment and leave it at that. And it's your opinion there are so much better shows on TV. I don't agree, I think it's much better than it's credited for. And I hate the fact that the ratings don't reflect that. On international basis it's well appreciated and liked so that must mean something too. So we BatB fans are not gonna stop just because you want us to, that would be something. And I think these negative comments and down votes are irritating and childish. I would like you all to show respect for everyone's opinion and taste. I rest my case!

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear you don't like BatB anymore. You say it had much potential but if they would have went on with the story of S1 it would eventually become boring. They're exploring some new story lines and mythologies in S2 that, by the look of what we hear and see in spoilers and interviews like with Austin Basis, are gonna be very intriguing. I wish you would have more patience (because I really think we get some of the great things from S1 back) and keep watching this, at least to me, very exciting, never predictable and well acted show. But that's just my opinion, don't shoot me :-)

ReplyDeleteFor exemple : I really like Once Upon a Time, but I'll never say that it's the best show in the world, considering I've seen much better shows as Breaing Bad, Mad Men or GOT ! It doesn't prevent me from being a fan of OUAT, and maybe even enjoying more an episode of OUAT than an episode of Mad Men for exemple. But I have to admit that Mad Men has much better developped characters and a much subtle history !
So you're telling that we're (me and many others) behaving like childs, but I'm sorry to tell you the same thing if you're not able to recognize that there are better shows than BATB (even if it's your favourite one) and that some people (in fact a lot) can't bear watching it and find irritating all the fans venerating the show whereas BATB is obviously not (at all) one of the best shows on TV.
Maybe on these comments there are no hate or bashing comments but on other polls there were. And my problem is the constantly immature down voting when someone mentions to vote for BatB. I would like everyone to show respect for other opinions. I'm not down voting on other shows I don't like or maybe do like but only on nasty comments. And why shouldn't BatB not belong in the top 4? I think it's better than it's credited for. But that's also just my humble opinion.

People take the up and down votes to be different things - like/dislike with the comment/show/sentiment or agree/disagree with the comment/show/sentiment or whatever. I bet people have voted based on the username. In reality, the up and down votes don't really mean anything but the amount of attention you give them. So if they bug you, why give them any more thought?
ReplyDeleteOn BatB belonging in the top 4 or not - this is a competition. So it got this far fair and square because it has a fandom that can organize itself and support it. No one can argue with the results of the fandom. However, this is a glorified popularity contest (as is almost every contest or poll on SpoilerTV) - people can have different opinions on the outcome.
I'm not focused on BatB. I watch a lot of other shows. But BatB is my favourite. I can't help it, it just is. I never say it's the best as a truth, but to me it is. And I think a lot of viewers didn't gave it a fair chance to grow (like most of the shows have to I guess). And you say that 99% of the reviewers don't like it. I don't know where that's coming from because especially S2 gets a lot of positive reviews. But it's all just my opinion.

ReplyDeleteAfter all I respect your opinion, I'm just saying that most of the reviewers and lot of people don't share it. It's just that I really hardly understand how so many people can find this show really good (and I've watched few episodes of it, so I'm not judging without having seen it).
ReplyDeleteIf a show or more particularly an episode in this case makes you so unhappy, then it is an opinion and a workable voting strategy. You hate that show or episode. For example, I so thoroughly loathe the Taxi Driver episode of Supernatural that I would gladly vote for anything that ran against it. Even if it was an episode of a show I normally do not like. In the same way, there is no TV episode on the planet I would vote for if it were running against Buffy's Becoming, part 2. Voting against is just as valid a reason as voting for something. There's a reason why many baseball fans root for ABY - Anyone but Yankees.

ReplyDeleteThat's why these contests are fun, because everyone has different opinions. I could barely get through the Game of Thrones pilot, but I've seen Arrow's Sacrifice into the multi digits now and it never gets old. For me, it was by far the best episode of 2013 and one of my favorite episodes of TV period.
ReplyDeleteUp and down voting is largely a shorthand for agree or disagree for me so when I use them it's rarely personal and often when I am in a hurry. However, to be clear, I have not downvoted anything here. I do think that part of the problem though is that you keep bringing attention to it, which just feeds the trolls. It also smacks of a "woe is my poor fandom, everyone is picking on me" attitude that actually makes it harder to root for your fandom. To be honest, complaining about other people not respecting your show does nothing for me; whereas, talking reasonably and persuasively about why you are voting for a show's episode makes me more likely to try it. Perhaps putting more effort in talking about this episode and why it was so great with specific, episode-focused points would make your case better.
ReplyDeleteFighting negative with positive always works better in these contests. I came to SpoilerTV as a Supernatural fan when most people had barely heard of it. I spent the first 6 months fighting the lie that it was a teen girl show that people only liked because the actors were hot. By defending the show passionately, but not crazily, and giving specific reasons why people should try it, we actually got several people here to check out SPN, and for awhile it was one of the most popular shows here. I understand getting defensive about people mocking your show, but by feeding into it you do BatB a disservice. Make your passion positive, don't sugarcoat the flaws (because all shows have them) and talk about different aspects of the show to different groups of people. After all, the people who watch Vampire Diaries are likely to enjoy a different aspect of BatB than people who watch say Person of Interest. You can turn public opinion around, even if not everyone will like or try it, but you have to think of it as an advertising campaign not emotional spewing.

Like many people that watched and fought for a second season I just don't like the path the show is going right now. I don't agree with so many things...Batb stop to be fun to me and I'm really sad to say this, because i used to love this show. I lost faith in the writers, BATB it's not a tv show that i look forward every week anymore. Some people misunderstood don't like the season with Vincat separated. I really don't care if they be apart for all the season, I just don't like how they are doing it. The lack of Jt( he was the reason i started watching and the writers really don't apreciate what Austin Basis does for the show), continuity errors, A tv show is not made like this, you can't just through away all the things that has been said and change everything. Again, this is my opinion and I wish i was the only one but sadly a lot of people agree with me and that's why Batb is in danger to be canceled. What gets me mad all the time, is how Kern act like everything is ok in the world, and keep saying that Beasties have the power, but the fans can only do so much... He is thinking about a mitology for 5 years when Batb is in danger to not even come back in March. I still don't know if I'm coming back for the second half of the season. For the spoilers I've been reading It doesn't seem likely...I want Batb to have a third season, even if i stop watching because the cast is good and fans deserve it.

I hope we will get to see more of him (and with Vincent about their past) and less Gabe for that matter. But I hope you change your mind and do watch the next eps. You talked about the spoilers but it has been proven that they are often different than what we really get to see so don't depend to much on them. Last night I saw a tweet from Austin in which he says some epic eps are coming and we have to tune in. They start a new arc and I think the first eps will be hard to watch (but also fun I heard) and with this new mythology and the deeper connection of C and V I'm so curious. I've read an interview with Austin and by what he told it looks very promising. And to me it's never predictable (and I often have that with other shows or movies). To cut a long story short, I hope you join us and keep watching BatB!
ReplyDeleteI better not say it's the best show in the world (I can't because I don't watch all shows in the world LoL) but the one I like the most. And I've never been hooked on a show like I am on BatB. And I watched a lot of them. It just draws me in, I can't really explain.
ReplyDeleteThat's the problem maybe, you watched only a few eps. A show has to grow and BatB got better and better and that's why I said some people didn't give it a fair chance. And some made assumptions because of what others said maybe or they thought it was only a remake of the show from the 80s. And it's totally not. But again, that's just my humble opinion.

And I think a lot of people who 'hate' it have certain assumptions about it and are not objective. So it's hard to try to convince them otherwise. And I also like Supernatural and POI. But I try to follow your suggestion, it probably works better.
ReplyDeleteI faced the same "wrong assumption" problem at first with Supernatural so I understand. However, emotional, off the cuff arguments tend to set your show and fandom back, often a lot. I found that sometimes I would do the cast and crew of Supernatural a much bigger service by stepping away from the keyboard for a little while, regrouping, and then refocusing on the positive. It isn't easy to get people to try something they don't think they will like so it takes time. Beasties have a lot of passion, and that's great. Sadly though, it feels like that passion was not channeled well on SpoilerTV and it made people less likely to try the show or even be hostile to it because they perceive the fandom as obnoxious. If you really do want to get more SpoilerTV respect, you guys need to approach it differently. I guess it depends on if it's worth the time to you, because it will take time. It will also take policing your own fandom when someone is overdoing it before others do, helping them to remember to stay positive and turn things around together. From what I have seen of Beasties, you are up to the challenge if you choose to.

ReplyDeleteVoting is not always about picking who you think it best, sometimes, it is about voting against who you don't want winning. Lots of people voted for Obama, not because they thought he was a good choice, but because they were more worried about Romney winning.
PS- I also thought Taxi Driver was underwhelming... although I also felt Sacrifice was weak too. Baffles me that both of them were nominated for best episodes/director categories in my awards. I literally don't see the appeal of either episode.
I don't get the appeal of Supernatural's Sacrifice either to be honest. However, Taxi Driver was direct by Guy Bee, one of SPN's favorite directors so it was probably him and not the episode that really got the nomination. Sacrifice was directed by Philip Sgriccia, a director and producer since season 1. Perhaps the same goes for him as well.

ReplyDeleteA down vote from me is only used when I see someone either rambling on "how great/bad" something is, and anyone who disagrees is stupid.
Someone who posts "love BATB" wont get a down vote from me, because that is what they feel towards it.
If they try to tell me its the "best show ever", they will get a down vote, because now you have made a statement of fact, which is clearly wrong.
I down vote people who cheerlead on shows I even like, if I think they are being narrow minded & ignorant about it.
The "Best shows on TV" are not always my favorite shows on TV. The lists have some overlap, but there are certainly shows I would consider "one of the best" on TV, that I'm not a fan of & frankly, don't even watch. Breaking Bad, Mad Men, these are shows I respect, but not a fan & don't even watch them more than the occasional passing ep. They aren't on my top 30 favorite shows lost, but they are on my top 10 best shows list. On the other side Supernatural or Hawaii Five-O, on my favorite shows list, but I cant put them on a best list ever, because they aren't. They are pure entertainment, little to no depth.
People can be a fan of BatB all they want....but till they have watched at least 20 other programs & can objectively tell me several other "best" shows, no one will respect your opinion. Learn the difference between "entertaining" & "quality". They don't overlap too often anymore.
When I see someone say 1 show & 1 show only is "the best" or "the worst" I see no value in their opinion, because they don't have one. If you tell me "its great" and not explain why its great, same thing. If you want people to be convinced by what you are telling them, give it to us in more detail than the length of a tweet.
One last addition to all of this rambling...if you haven't watched at least 3 episodes of a show, don't comment on its quality either. One episode is NEVER a quality enough sampling to be sure. Give everything you try 3 chances to catch on with you (ideally in order from the pilot).
yeah I get why Taxi Driver got nominated for Best director. The fandom nominated Jensen Ackles episode last year, so yeah.

Actually, it's the least deserving ratings- wise of getting a renewal for another season, well, it and TCD are both the least deserving. There's a reason why the CW are putting this show on an extended hiatus soon, its ratings don't justify keeping it on their schedule, and no poll is going to change that.
ReplyDeleteThis is subjective. GoT is a show that I couldn't even finish its 1st season because I tried but couldn't like it, and Arrow is my current favorite.

But I also think that most people, if they say a show is the best, they don't mean it's 'really' the best as a truth but more that to them it's the best (at least for me it is). And I totally agree with your addition that when you give an opinion about a show you at least watched 3 eps (and maybe even a few more, most shows have to grow or build a story) before you do. ReplyDeleteDahne thanks for your positive feedback. And yes, most of the Beasties are great, positive people. It's a unique fandom and we even try within the fandom to keep ppl positive. So I have to agree with you to approach this in another way, it will be better. And you experienced that with Supernatural so you will know. Thanks :-)

ReplyDeleteI cannot believe that Beauty and the Beast Won...I could barely sit through the preview showing at the Paley, and I did not think it would last out the first season. And, believe me, I loved the old series with Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton and watched it faithfully. Especially since it was up against Game of Thrones-The Rains of Castamere, and ultimately Person of Interest-the Crossing. Those were brilliant episodes of incredibly well-acted and well-made series.
ReplyDeleteCastle lost me about 2 seasons ago, and I never watched The Mentalist, so I can't speak for them, but I do like Arrow also, and I'm surprised it also would lose out to BatB since it has a strong CW audience.
Now we know why it won. If the BatB fans each voted that many times, of course they won! Geeze.
