DAY 17! (Results from yesterday can be found here.)
Well, here we are. THIS. IS. IT. The final of the SpoilerTV 2013 Favourite Episode Competition. If you had asked me at the start of the competition, I would not have predicted either of these episodes to be in today's final. I had expected Game of Thrones's 'The Rains of Castamere' and Breaking Bad's 'Ozymandias' to be in the final. Yet, here we are, with two entirely different episodes.
The rules are as follows:
1. Two episodes go head to head for 24 hours. The episode that emerges as winner will go through to the next round.
2. Vote for your favourite episode, and tell us what you voted for.
3. Tell others about the competition.
4. Be respectful. This is a competition, but be friendly.
Both of these two episodes began as unseeded. Castle took out two seeded episodes, including Game of Thrones's 'The Rains of Castamere'; Beauty and the Beast one. The question is, which will triumph in the final?

ReplyDeleteMost definitely Castle today. Still was one of the best episodes of TV I have seen in a while. It gave a great story all while giving treat after treat to long standing fans and a great glimpse to new fans.

You're right. Always and even Knockdown or Knockout would also be in the competition if these episode aired in 2013, but they didn't.
ReplyDeleteStill is an excellent episode. For every Castle/Caskett fan, it wasn't just a clip show. It was a reminder of why we love the series that much. It shows the evolution of Caskett relationship, that Castle was willing to stay with Beckett until the last minute even if she was standing on a bomb, and the boys and Gates were also fantastic! It made me laugh and cry in 40 minutes! So, good job!
So yeah, as you can understand, I voted for Castle!

ReplyDeleteAnd I too say this as a Caskett and Castle fan. And I'm saddened that all it takes is a pandering clip show for people to just eat it up, where's the critical thinking man?
Recoil, The Wild Rover, WATERSHED!, and Disciple were far stronger episodes from a writing perspective, and what vexes me is that of course people just prefer the episode that panders more to them, instead of the better one.
I know I'm just being a party pooper, but urgh.

ReplyDeleteI'm just tired that popularity keeps triumphing over quality, and I guess it's a lost battle when I'm discussing this on a "favorite tv show poll"
ReplyDeleteYes, we are all allowed to our opinions; what I don't like is that the BaTB fandom always seems to swarm the polls (the Castle fandom too BTW) regardless of how big their presence is in the site.
Cause yea, I can say that BaTB is a bad show, but that is just as valid as the opposing opinion and merely a matter of taste at the end that is of no consequence in either direction.
What greatly vexes me is how some fandoms just steamroll every poll, and that is just not fair at the end.

ReplyDeleteThey are more passionate about their shows. They Tweet the polls to all their followers, send the links to cast/crew and writers of the show asking for a ReTweet, Getting Fansites to link to the polls.
They work very hard and are very dedicated.
Personally I think that's great.
Not only does it show how passionate they are, but also exposes SpoilerTV to new people who may not have known about us in the past. It helps us attract new regulars to the site.
You do realize, that EVERY Poll that has EVER been posted on the Interest has been a Popularity Contest?

I like batb , and yes it's one of my favourites... i can't tell you what's happening with castle but i can tell you about batb ....the fandom is very passionate about the show ... and especially now that we might lose ...we're are doing our best ... that's all ... I hope i 'covered' you with my answer ;)
ReplyDeleteIt may have been a clip show. However, you have to admit that it was a great clip show. Especially since ABC called for an extra episode when it was to late for them to do one. They put this together at the last minute.

ReplyDeleteI did liked Still, it entertained me, it had great moments. But sorry, I just can't see it as a favorite of mine. It lacks as a narrative and it stands on an overused deceit that at best you can classify as filler.

ReplyDeleteI'm against the whole concept of popularity contest; and I will keep on hoping someone, sometime makes a pool competition where the community actually picks based on quality and has to argumentate their choice.
As it is, these polls are great for the site (that traffic, am I right?!) but it would be hardly argumentable that they reflect the feelings of the SpoilerTV community on a fair manner.
But it was never about it, not really. I'm just Belle's father raving.
A good clip show is still just a clip show!! I don't hate them, but they will never reach a my favorite lists of my own, I'm sorry.

ReplyDeleteI actually very much agree with this whole sentiment and relish in that Spoilertv is an open and positive place where people can discuss their favorite television shows, vote and represent their respective fandoms, and get info on things to come. But there is also another aspect of this that you seem to be missing.
ReplyDeleteThe "imagine how boring the world would be if everyone liked the same things" actually applies here, in that, without fail the most vocal and numerous fans will likely vote in polls like this. So, ergo, the same or similar group of shows will likely always win these competitions, which you could probably call "boring." See how it's almost a bit double-edged in that regard?
Having said that, I don't find anything wrong with the way these things work out, and I'm always thankful for the ones who organize these STV events like Bradley and Adam, because they provide everyone their own chance to speak up and clamor for what they like in tv shows, and it can lead to all sorts of conversation.

ReplyDeleteI know, I know. I sometimes just wish people where more appreciative of the writing, or the quiality overall, of an episode, or series, instead of how much pleasure buttons it hits at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThat's the reason we have crappy entertainment, that's the reason why the Transformer movies exist. I don't believe on mindless entertainment, and even if I can appreciate, or even love something I can describe as not the best quality wise, I can't in good conscience call it a favorite.
I can love crappy things, guilty pleasures if you will (Still is more than that in any case, just "middle of the pack" I'd say")
But my "favorite" goes for things that challenge me and make me feel more emotion than just "swoon and yay". It has to earn my respect, not just pander to me as a viewer.
And who would be the judge of "quality"? How do you define that?

Anything like this is always subjective.and you'll never, ever get a mechanism that will change that.
Even the "respected" awards, BAFTA, Oscars, SAG etc still have their detractors and not everyone agrees with their picks.

My opinion is; if this was about quality, if people spend more time actually concerned about it (and this is also encompassing of how a show can challenge you) Neither Kidnapped nor Still should be in this list.
But again, it was never about that. It's just popularity.

Watershed, Disciple and The Wild Rover where better episodes. Hunt too (I had some issues with that ep, but Kate kicking that chair triumphs everything!!! Love that ep, but can't bee too high on my fave list ;D)
I agree with you I loved "Hunt" bad$%# Beckett we need to see more of that. Disciple made the list in the competition. Sadly it fell to another show. :(

Show me a workable solution of how you would quantify "Quality" in an online poll and we'd try it. However, ever since Polls, both online and off-line, have been run they have ALWAYS been popularity contests. They are likely to be that way long after both you and I are gone.

I gotta agree on Still atleast. I love Castle and Still was great but it isn't the best Castle episode this year let alone the best of 2013. My pick would've definitely been Disciple, which is my favorite Castle episode in awhile but it lost to BATB in the first round which shocked me.

ReplyDeleteAmen good sir. While I don't agree with this final personally (mine would've been Day of the Doctor vs Arrow The Scientist) it's the people's choice in the end. I enjoyed ever aspect of this competition (especially seeing Arrow upset BB twice) and am super excited for whatever is up next. If the people like these two episodes best then so be it, I'm just happy to contribute to my picks when I can. People like Disappointed/Ghost need to stop caring so much. Congrats to BATB and Castle fans for showing up and getting their show to the final with a chance to win it all.

What if we ever did a "defend your show" sort of deal? The site would pick 12 users at random and the rest of the community would then choose shows (episodes, actors, etc) to nominate.
The nominations would be popularity based, but then the jury would have to take the ultimate decisions after the community chooses representatives to convince them of their choice.
Of course the possibility of corruption would be there, but it also would be very exciting.
That's all I'm saying ;D

ReplyDeleteSince I'm finding all this comment argument completely and utterly ridiculous, here's my take.
ReplyDeleteThose calling this a popularity contest, on some level it is. But so is every competition that's ever existed. If a show has more fans, obviously more votes are going to go to that show. But that episode must obviously have quality, otherwise it wouldn't have made it into this competition in the first place. If a show airs the worst possible episode it has ever aired, even the diehard fans aren't going to vote for it ahead of quality episodes.
Those who still have a problem, check rule 4 on the post. If people want to vote for one episode, LET THEM VOTE FOR THE DAMN EPISODE. There is no need to complain because your episode (the other episode) wasn't voted for by that person. If you don't watch either, then just enjoy the final. There is no need WHATSOEVER to complain because your show isn't in the final. None of my shows are in this final, but am I complaining? No. Why? Other than the fact I am running it. I want to enjoy the competition. If you can't appreciate other people's opinions, then perhaps that could be your New Year's resolution.

ReplyDeleteYou don't like BatB, that's possible and just a matter of taste. But don't say it's awful acting because you didn't watch a lot of it then. Especially the acting of Jay Ryan is great. He's portraying a complete different character this season than in S1 so if that's not acting I don't know. And he's able to show all kind of emotions even without talking. And it's not he's acting for the first time, he has had a lot of acting years down under. And Kristin Kreuk does a great job too. And as a couple with their on screen chemistry, that makes it very believable too. And this is not only a fan speaking.

To me the entire thing looks like the two shows with the most rabid shipper bases having taken over a poll that was ment to rank this years best episodes, best in terms of quality. And if people feel that this poll does not represent the literally best episode (or one of the best) this year it's their opinion.
Is it fair for critics to criticise the oscars ? Hell yeah it is.

personally I could care less wether we'd find Rains of Castamere, Ozymandias, The Boy must live or Name of the Doctor would win. Each episode is good in its own right. But I'm damn well allowed to criticise an outcome of a poll just like I'll have to accept the it. I won't change it by criticising but I'm voicing my resentment of the result.

ReplyDeleteYou raise some good points. I have no problem with people not agreeing with this final, since I don't as well. But at least be respectful about it. There is no need for people to start bitching about how their show didn't make it through. OK, these two episodes might not be the best of the year, but this is, as I said in my nomination round post, the Favourite Episode Competition, because it cannot be put to the fans to decide on the best. Unless you get someone that had watched EVERY episode of EVERY show in 2013,
ReplyDeleteObviously, the need for respect is always there. YET I haven't seen anyone lashing out in any seriously horrible or offensive way (the worst I've seen so far being 'the communitys taste has def. lowered' or something like this).
ReplyDeleteI always take such polls with a grain of salt and close my left eye to suspend my disbelief and ignore that probably only 5% of us have seen all listed episodes. That's a given.
Look case in point: we all have our opinions. Criticising the critics is always needed and such polls rarely show a definite number. On the contrary, fans of one particular fanbase rush at their imdb, wikia, tumblr or twitter site of choice and have an army of [insert shows name] fans charge at the poll.
Among one of the reasons I would urge people to take polls with a grain of salt and ask fans of these shows not to go around proudly showcasing the poll numbers if they don't want to hear about Nielsen ratings (thinking ahead here, I've seen enough shippers get upset if their ship made a poll and didn't happen but then resorted in harrassing the showrunners and sending death threats)

Beauty and the Beast!
ReplyDeleteI watch both shows. I really try to be objective when I vote and I have to say that Kidnapped and Beauty and the Beast has to be the top. The acting and emotion in the show especially this season has become incredible. They lead characters are playing totally different roles this year than last and this episode was much stronger delivered than Still, and I really liked that episode too.

All Meatystakes was saying was she/he didn't think that Still was as good an episode as some of the better written and produced ones. This is true, I'm sure anyone would agree with me. She/he never said the episode was crap, and some of the comments were written as if she did.
ReplyDeleteIn context, we know ABC ordered an extra episode last minute which AM had little time to plan or make room for in the actual story arc of the show. Considering this, it is actually quite cleverly structured ep using old clips. The ep also houses two crucial parts of the show's story development: 1.Gates knows about Caskett & 2.Beckett says i love you for the first time. Those two scenes were probably the strongest of the episode. That said, as mentioned in a comment, Still is a reminder to the fans of what they love about this show so dearly. I know i knew every word to the flashback scenes. :)
Since Disciple was the only other episode entered by SpoilerTV which got knocked out, leaving the only representative of Castle as Still so of cause any Castle fan would vote for it because they are voting for the show as a whole. That's my explanation as to why it is in the Final.
Everyone is allowed their own opinion, and believe it or not it is allowed to be the opposite of others'. We all share a common passion and love for Castle so I don't understand why so many fights break out amongst us. I think people have nothing better to do than to stir, especially on spoiler forums and on twitter too. And the sad thing is, is that most of the people who end up fighting are all adults who act immature and should all know better. They're the ones who are supposed to set a good example to younger people, especially since there is so much cyber bullying these days. I could rant on and on about this.
Sad that arrow didnt make it to the finals but whatever hopefully castle wins.

ReplyDeleteWow, this one is rough. So many good episodes got knocked out so early I cannot vote for either. Don't get me wrong, I love Castle to death! But voting any episode "the best" over Ozymandius or the Rains of Castamere would be a travesty. Great competition though. enjoyed it a lot.

As I said in the semi-finals, this isn't even IMO 1 of the top 3 Castle eps of 2013, but I HAVE to vote for it, since the alternative is from a show I strongly dislike.
Could not agree more. Ozymandius was one of the best episodes in T.V. history. So was The Rains of Castamere. But polls are polls. I love Castle, but could never vote for it over those episodes. For me its all about quality. So I have to abstain from this round. As I did for all rounds after the loss of those 2 amazing, landmark episodes of T.V. To each their own I guess.

As someone who has dealt with LOTS of hardcore fanatical fanbases through the years, my take away from seeing the infighting that often happens in fandoms is this, 97% of the time it comes down to 2 things.
1- lack of reading comprehension being the biggest. People either read too much into each single word (usually women.. not trying to be sexist, it just is this way), or not enough & often translate what the person was literally saying into a warped, bastardized version of it that fits their agenda/mood. I see it SO often. This is the largest problem when discussing anything, including TV shows even more so it seems.
2- People who watch a show ONLY for 1 actor/ship. Quite literally, they are only watching for the 1 actor/actress they have a thing for, or a ship they want to see happen/continue. Any other actor on the show is "useless" & anyone having an opinion wavering from the posters fave actor/ship being the best is an idiot. You cant reason with these people, because the only opinion they will respect/accept is one that agrees entirely with their own.
These are 2 things you will never avoid if you decide to wade into the bogs known as "discussion boards". I understand the 1st one, its simple laziness. Common in society, even with me at times. The second baffles me though, and yet theres so many people like this. They carry the same level of fanatical blind devotion for 1 actor/ship being the ONLY right answer its like a religious cult. A delusion, unhealthy, cult... but without them, TV shows would lost 10% of their fans.

ReplyDeleteI confess, running my own polls, I often see fanbases push to get their lesser known shows/actors etc into the semi-finals (no limits on votes 1st round so theoretically 1 person COULD get someone into the semi-finals singlehandedly, then there IS a 1 vote rule from then on) & I know they have little to no chance of winning, but they seem happy to just get there....so I don't knock them trying. I need to sit back & be objective on them. I cant tell them they are likely wasting their time, why don't you let this clearly better show that's getting bumped for your show that will get crushed next round go instead.
But when I am on other boards, like this one, where I am simply a spectator, I absolutely feel I have the right to be critical of the results. Disagreeing with results is part of discussing. The only other option is "everyone agrees" which isn't a discussion then, that's just fan circle jerk.
I am a fan of Castle. But I don't see how this episode specifically is in the top 64 episodes, let alone the finals. Its in my opinion, not even 1 of the top 3 Castle eps in 2013.
I am also capable of saying, even though I am not a fan of Breaking Bad, Ozymandias is clearly 1 of the top episodes of 2013 & deserves its spot in the top 64 & I'd say even the final 4. The fact it lost to an episode of a show I like, Arrow is irrelevant. It legitimately SHOULD have been a semi-finalist.
But this IS a popularity contest. It doesn't even try to skirt around the issue. They don't call it "best" (as I have...might have to change that next year) they call it "favorite". Clearly 64 or less people nominated these episodes while others were not nominated that likely were far better (see my Castle point).
Yes, Ozy & Rains are better quality episodes than the 2 finalists. Any logical & objective person will agree with this. But they aren't the most popular, which IS what this is. A popularity contest. For that reason, although I disagree with the results, I don't complain much about it....because clearly the Batb fans rallied their fans better than GOT & BB fans did.

But I don't understand why neither Game of Thrones nor Breaking Bad is in this final. I know it's actually not a competiton based on the quality of the shows but on people tastes... But in fact it's not THE BEST EPISODE which is gonna win, but only an episode of a show which has a great fan base. Lot of people just vote because they like the show and not because of the quality of the episode, not even for the quality of the show.

ReplyDeleteSo just for kicks and giggles, I went to check Castle's "Still" and Beauty and the Beast's "Kidnapped" ratings against Show's Episodes Ratings in the Other Feature - both episodes were not in the top 2 highest rated 2013 episodes inside their shows.

- Any Means Possible (4.87), Insatiable (4.84), Partners in Crime (4.84) and Liar, Liar (4.77)
Castle's Still is number 3 after:
- The Lives of Other (4.89) and Target (4.87)
Other interesting tidbits, from 2013's Show's Episode Ratings Person of Interest's "Zero Day" scored highest with 4.94. Castle's The Lives of Others and Person of Interest's Dead Reckoning tied for number 2 with 4.89. Beauty and the Beast Any Mean's Possible was number 4 with 4.87. Its interesting that most shows highest SpoilerTV rated episodes didn't get make the cut and that is also what made this competition fun. Thanks again Bradley!

ReplyDeleteI am under the impression that a lot of BatB fans watch multiple series. They are entitled to have their own opinion and their own favorite show. Kudos to them to be able to organize themselves to support their show online. If you have a favorite choice in this contest and it didn't get far - maybe you could try to help its online community grow into something that resembles the BatB support system and give it a run for its money next year.
