The Problems With Revolution - Review
23 Jan 2014
Reviews RevolutionEven from the start, my feelings about this show had been mixed. Originally, it wasn't a show that piqued my interest. After some convincing, I decided to give it a go. While I may be one of the minority that enjoyed season 1, season 2 hasn't been good, and in particular the past three episodes have been a seemingly never-ending 45 minutes of my life, filled with my yelling of expletives at the screen.
Let’s start with the positives.
Monroe has by far been this season’s MVP. Last season, he was shown to be a power-hungry, crazy, violent, evil psychopath. Funny how people like that change when their power is taken away. My only complaint about Monroe is his plan to revamp the Monroe Militia, with his son Connor’s help. Repeating a storyline isn’t going to help, especially not one that while good for the first season, would make no sense in the second.
While Bass seems to still be the violent, evil psychopath as when commanding thousands of men (as shown in ‘One Riot, One Ranger’ when brutally killing a Texas Ranger), at least now he is working for the good guys, not the bad. His dialogue is fantastic (see 2.07, “I’m batman.”), and in particular his recent interactions with Miles have been the only thing keeping me in the show. The connection between the two, however deep, often has kinks. While this isn’t good from either character’s point of view, it brings out a lot of funny dialogue (see 2.11, Miles: “You’re a dick”).
Miles has been equally as good, but unlike Monroe, he isn’t much different to the character we saw in the back end of last season. You can’t doubt his commitment to helping his friends. Despite having his hand crushed, an infection to his arm and the ever present high levels of danger, he still risks his life to save those close to him. His interactions with every character have been fantastic, and thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
Connor, despite being new to the show, has actually been quite fun. His interactions with the few characters he has been with play out like his father’s demise – just a hell of a lot quicker. “Let me reiterate... screw both of you – with something pointy.” He is certainly his father’s son, and he has been a tiny glimpse of hope in this mess of a season.
So then we move on to the negatives.
The repetition of characters risking their lives to save other characters, however brave, is a highly overused plot. It seems that every single episode seems to result in at least one character being captured. It was good for a while, but, particularly when the character seems to be broken out within half an hour every time, there is very little point to any character being captured.
With last night’s ‘Captain Trips’, THREE more characters ended up either captured (Tom and Julia) or in a situation where they are liable to be captured (Connor). It was fun for a while, but now it has stretched beyond extremes.
Tom’s story was intriguing at first. He and his son’s quest to avenge Julia’s (Kim Raver) death by working their way up to killing all of the high-level Patriots was an enjoyable one. Now that she has returned, not only has it become much more confusing as to what the point of this crusade now is, it isn’t even remotely interesting. Tom’s murder of the Secretary of State, while at first a good plan, when it failed, the crazy ambition took over, leading to Tom killing him in his room. Now, while the Secretary had to die for the story to progress, it irritated me that they decided to make Tom find a different way of doing it. It seemed like wasted time in order to reach the same end result.
The supposed secret meetings between Tom and Julia seemed as though the pair had stolen two of the perception filters from Doctor Who in order to have their conversations. Until their last scene last night, I thought that no one within a 100 yard radius of the two had eyes. Or knew how to use them. The stupidity in that no one noticed them constantly talking is absurd.
The only positive for me in the Tom story is that Jason finally decided he’d had enough of his parents’ never-ending BS plan and took things into his own hands. OK, he got captured (ugh) but at least he tried to do something, rather than mindlessly listening to what his parents say. I find the likelihood that Jason is still alive very slim, but it is still possible.
Then we move on to the Patriots. It’s definitely a common theme in stupidity levels between those in Willoughby and those in Washington. So, when Rachel and Charlie were in the tent with Gene, who had been infected with the typhus, not wearing masks, no one, including Truman, noticed. Since he knows the damn typhus isn't going to spread, he should realise that now they know too, since they don’t need to wear their masks.
As for the typhus, the dramatic effect of the realisation that it was made in a lab (which, after 16 years without electricity, much be pretty damn hard to do), had no bearing on me whatsoever. It was obvious in ‘Three Amigos’ that they were putting some kind of deadly virus (or something similar) into the oranges, yet we were meant to be surprised that the typhus was the work of the Patriots.
Aaron’s story has gone way off base. While the recurrence of the nanotech in the season 2 premiere led me to quit the show, it had since improved. Now, the nanotech are a pure annoyance. Directing Aaron to find Grace (who, after two appearances has disappeared – probably captured), where he then finds his old wife before being directed to Lubbock, Texas is a crazy treasure hunt – with an unknown and probably non-existent treasure at the end. And, didn’t the nanotech abandon him? Make your mind up nanotech….
While Monroe has been fantastic this season, his twisted belief that he and Connor can reignite the Monroe Militia would be, if not for the colossal stupidity going on around him, the most ridiculous thought on the show. What’s even more shocking is that Monroe thinks that Miles can help him do so. Miles quit the Militia and helped to take it down. But, he has apparently forgiven Monroe for his atrocities and would be willing to rejoin a new Militia.
While season 1 wasn’t exactly a stand-out set of episodes, it was a lot better than these drab storylines that we have been getting. Something needs to be changed, and fast.

Great article! I agree with a lot of your points, and last night's new episode really highlighted some of these. The repetition is frustrating to me and especially painful in the Aaron and Tom parts because those plotlines are just getting pointless. I love Revolution and I know it can be so, so, so much better than this. The writers need to step up their game big-time ASAP to save this show. Another thing that really bugs me is that Charlie is so underused lately. She's fabulous and should be front and center along with Miles and Monroe (three best characters - send them on any badass adventure and you're guaranteed a great episode; it's just not that hard). Also, whether or not one ships "Charlroe" (I do, heehee) not having Charlie and Monroe in scenes together lately has been a total waste. However one wants to interpret their relationship, and even if it's as enemies, the chemistry between those actors is exceptional.
ReplyDeleteThank you. It does annoy me that we get this rubbish when we know they can do better. I don't ship anyone, least of all Charlie and Monroe. But, their scenes together earlier in the season were good.
ReplyDeleteGreat review and I am so glad I am not the only one who thought Season 1 was better than Season 2. Of course, I am a huge Miles fan so it goes without saying that I have been disappointed in his lack of story line lately.
ReplyDeleteI don't find it too far fetched that Monroe wants to rebuild his republic though. In season 1, he said he did it for Miles and now he wants to do it for his son. He seems to think people will only like him when he has power which makes him a pretty sad character. I also don't find it far fetched that he knows he needs Miles to help him. Afterall, it was Miles who built the militia who really was the backbone of the republic. It looks to me that he is only staying around now and help fight the Patriots so he can blackmail Miles later on to help with the republic. Miles pretty much did the same thing when Monroe wanted to find his son...Miles blackmailed Monroe with the promise of getting him to his son. I love this love/hate bromance those two have going on, and the actors are fantastic in their scenes together.
I really miss Charlie as well. She has developed so nicely into this bad ass fighter but it somehow seems to have taken her tongue as she barely has a speaking role now. I loved the mentor/apprentice relationship her and Miles had and wish we would see more of this again.
I couldn't care less for the Nano storyline but then I have never been a fan of anything supernatural and what attracted me to Revolution had less to do with SCI-FI but more with the character development and the sword fight scenes.
The Neville story line...the only thing I am looking forward to is when Neville catches up with our gang...some of the best scenes from Season 1 were between Neville and Monroe and Neville and Miles.
Ehh....Season 2 has been MUCH better then season 1. And for the viewers that stuck around for season 2, it seems to be the consensus.
ReplyDeleteStill, it's unfocused, reiterates the same plot lines to death, and doesn't know what to do with its characters half the time. That being said, I am enjoying Monroe (besides his quest to regain power) so far,
ReplyDeleteSome good points but I have loved this season so far.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with the catch and release they keep playing over and over again. Getting really tired. And I really can't stand rachel - one expression through the entire show all the time, no matter what's happening. You are right about all the inconsistencies, too - i thought the patriots were supposed to be clever and playing at double agent but not very well. just b/c people don't have power doesn't mean they've all turned stupid, does it? and tired of the julia/tom storyline - was good to mix it up with last night's scene which wasn't surprising (like you said, does no one notice the obvious???) Anyway, liking the bass and his son and miles storyline but again, it's pretty one dimensional, too. Don't know if this show will have more than a 3rd season if it doesn't get smarter.
ReplyDeleteGood review. I also liked elements of the first season and was disappointed in what the show later turned in to. I agree with your statements about the overuse of certain plot lines. Anything, no matter how effective, loses its shine if overdone, and that's definitely true on the capture/escape trope. I also felt they leaned too heavily on killing off characters and either never allowing any depth to form, or letting us get just enough to get slightly interested, and then killing them off before we can dig in any deeper. It got to the point where any new character we met was sure to get killed in an episode or two, so why bother caring. It was frustrating when Maggie was killed to be replaced with Nora, who was later killed, and when so much energy was put into finding Danny, who was immediately killed, etc. I get to some extent what they're trying to do with the randomness and brutality of war, but again, it got overused.
ReplyDeleteHaven't even read past the first paragraph but had to get this out: please, the word you want is "piqued", not "peaked". No excuse for an error like that, and I see it way too often from supposed 'professional writers'.
ReplyDeleteNow I've got that off my chest, I'll read the article!
You do make some very good points, and yet, I absolutely love season 2!! I think it far outshines S1-- I quit S1 in the middle because I was so sick of them fighting entire battalions and never getting a scratch. That sword fight when Miles & Nora picked up their friend, Jim, and took on 50-60 men, slaying all of them?? come on!!! At least this season they're not invincible-- they get hurt, sick and almost die.
ReplyDeleteI am sick of the whole Neville business and want him to meet up with Miles and Monroe again. I actually could care less about Aaron and the nanotech's now as it just seems like one wild goose chase.
But the banter between Miles and Monroe has been hilarious, the casting for Connor was a fantastic choice, but I too wish there were was more for Charlie to do. She hardly gets no story at all.
I will admit I am wild about the idea of Charloe (although I hate shipping names). Their chemistry is undeniable and the writers need to put them back on screen together as much as possible. I actually wouldn't mind seeing a Charlie, Bass, Connor love triangle which would really threaten the relationship between Monroe and his son, and possibly, set his son off on a quest for power of his own.
Bradley, you nailed it. The only interesting scene was the Typhus torture scene. This kick-ass, almost vigilante, Jack Bauer-ish type concept works; made clear in One Riot, One Ranger when Monroe came back tot he fold. The Charlie, Bass, and Miles trio worked. Very entertaining wit the humor and general badassery. Monroe and Charlie have great chemistry and really improve the energy. Now, with Connor the foursome, would be watchable and dare say, really good. But, the ridiculous sci-fy and all of Tom's plot, minus Kim Raver, kill it.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that gets me is the age issues. Charlie in real life is MUCH older, Bass is 7 years younger than he is. Which back ups my hard time with Connor being more like a little brother. Sure they will now pair Charlie up with Connor, which she seems more mature and needing a man, not a kid.
In short, the first concept of actual revolution and a take back America, patriotic, Falling Skies vibe. never amounted. I LOVE David Lyons, he's been the whole season, but the plot holes are just dumb; how hard is it to wrote this more clear?
YES. I just wrote this. Charloe, however it's used works. Been the fire lit back in the show. Those that do ship them, should, they are much closer in age than portrayed. If they put her with Connor, she actually like 8 years older than him. I had a hard time with her last season. But opening her up as woman, on her own, even bringing the bartender home, ha, and gutting bad guys, has made her gritty and thus great to watch with Monroe. They will screw this up, they are so good at that.
ReplyDeleteit's her botox. And for the love of God, why was the scene for her dying dad the same as the scene or dying Miles? Her lines were the same and looked at him in the same way, hell the frame was set the same.
ReplyDeleteOH that is such a good idea!!! The love triangle, turned wedge. Awesome. Esp if it's kinda in Connor's head more than real, any feelings she may have for him that is. Her and Bass work.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I would enjoy that kind of triangle, it's undeniable how much fun it is to watch Bass and Charlie interact. Bonus when Miles is present in the room. Even if Charloe never "becomes canon" or endgame, I still want more scenes with them together. If only to watch the sizzle and banter.
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of what you've been saying, I'll also add that Charlie has been mostly relegated to background reactions, Miles only cares about Rachel and is barely a main character and I'm not happy with this rift between Miles and Monroe- at this point they're both just using the other to get what they want. Aaron and Tom's storylines just completely bored me all season.
ReplyDeleteHa! I was right! You do write reviews for Revolution.
ReplyDeleteI actually agree with you more than I thought we would agree. For starters, with Tom, Julia, and Jason, you hit the nail on the head when you wrote that you don't know what he purpose of their crusade is. Exactly. That may be a big factor of why I'm currently tuning on their storyline. But in truth, I didn't enjoy the characters before this storyline either.
I also agree that Monroe has been far more interesting this season. I disagree that his plan to restart the Monroe Republic is repeating last season's storyline. Wanting to do it doesn't mean he's going to succeed, and I think it's in character that he would want to and think he can, even if he is delusional. This time he's going have to do with with Miles fighting him every step of the way, which could lead to some entertaining conflict.
I'm also more intrigued by the nanotech storyline than you are. The whole concept of this show - that all of the electricity suddenly went off - never made much sense to me. That this is developing into a story of an artificial intelligence seems to fit for some reason and give the story more shape.
Thanks. I don't think it's far fetched that Monroe wants it back. I think it's far fetched that he think his plan will work. Yep, Charlie has been underused. I had the same reason for getting into it. Yep, Neville will be good with the group.
ReplyDeleteRachel is pretty much just 'Monroe killed my son and it doesn't matter how much good he does he still needs to go die'. So annoying. Yep, I'd agree it might struggle for a third season.
ReplyDeleteI think at least when they were taking on 50 men and coming out unscathed, it was unrealistic but it was an interesting unrealistic. This isn't.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Nice comparison to 24. I think the idea is good, but it has been VERY poorly portrayed.
ReplyDeleteNo, you were wrong. This is just a one-off to vent my anger.
ReplyDeleteThe nanotech storyline could work, but the way it has played out has been appaling.
Episode 9 was fantastic. 1-8 were mildly average. 10-12 have been a horrific mess.
We so agree! I really hope they don't mess this Charlroe thing up by ignoring it. What an opportunity to create something amazing this season. They have all the raw materials, but this week's episode had them just doing the opposite of what would truly rock.
ReplyDeleteI was joking. I got that this is a one-off. Thanks for writing it! It's an interesting read.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking today with the new 24 shots released, to bounce off what you said, think on all of Jack's plots over the years... I mean whoa unrealistic. But they sell it. That show is on another level and league, but the point is, you can do batshit crazy and it be epic entertainment. Banshee is another example of that. Which if you don't watch... stop what you are doing and hit play :)
ReplyDeleteNext week Bret Michaels will be on the show and his scenes were with Charlie and Bass, so that is positive. I think the 3 of them go off to do something. I wish they would get consistent, have the team together more, everybody is always split up. Not sure how many ahead they shoot, but the Charloe thing didn't catch on until after many were made, so hopefully they start to get it. But, they have no proved that they can.
ReplyDeleteYou think it will get a 3rd season? IDK. Ratings were up a bit this week. But Olympics. And just general inability to get it together. But it's JJ, so kinda plays by different rules.
ReplyDeleteEven goes back to hair... yes hair, last year Charlie had perfect hair. Nobody noticed. Kripke has said it. It wasn't until the got new production crew in Austin that someone said something. I'm like, HOW IN THE hell, do u as a production team, a showrunner, not get that?! A storyteller's job is to tell the story, it floors me.
ReplyDeleteAgree to disagree.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you re: the age thing. It bothers me also that Bass is supposed to be 45 when the actor will turn 38 in april. And I've heard differing things on the actress that portrays Charlie-- I've heard she's 24, 29 and 31-- it does say she graduated from high school in 2000 on wiki-- so I wonder if she's closer to the 30 range.
ReplyDeleteI read that it's the 3 of them. But I am thinking that Because this was shot prior to the unveiling of Connor, maybe that is why he is not in the picture. In case Bret had posted prior to Connor's first ep.
ReplyDeleteThere was a pic Bret posted of Charloe and he. That is what i meant below.
ReplyDeletegotcha'.
ReplyDeleteAnd I just think if you've got 2 actor's with that much chemistry onscreen, you should roll with it.
ReplyDeleteHA, that was the DUMBEST plot EVER. DOn't even get me started. No chemistry, it's what are they doing?! When they opened up the S2 with her going home with that guy, I'm like score Charlie! Not encouraging sluttiness, ha, but she was a woman, that guy was at least 30. I'm, thank you TV gods! LOL
ReplyDeleteOh I meant pics, interviews too, not in person. Yes I live in Texas, but have not gone sadly. I know people that have been extras, which is so fun. THey suck!
ReplyDeletehave you seen them outside the show? They are like that off screen, major chem. So, no excuse, how can showrunners not see that stuff. JASON??!!! Ha, can't laugh enough about that.
ReplyDeleteLOL, yes they do. Just kidding.
ReplyDeleteNot other than pictures where she's giving him a wet willy. Have you gone to comic con or live in TX? When have you seen them?
ReplyDeleteP.S. I agree- Charlie has done so much growing up now and has proven herself-- she should be with a MAN. At the very least, don't put her back with Jason.
ReplyDeleteYea she is my age, I also graduated in 2000, she looks young, as do I, but if you watch her, her confidence and, IDK, you can just tell. She's not 22. Photos online she looks older, the no makeup look on the show helps the age. But the facebook crowd that sees her as 18, just I don't get it. I know the show has made her young, but to have such a hard time seeing why Charlie/Monroe would at least team up regularly, bc it's 'gross' is odd. It maybe that those are an older generation that feels that. In the post-ap world, your killing people and lived in war, who gives a damn about age. But yea the age thing is one of the big holes, not to mention Bass looks 10 younger than Miles. They should have made him a younger brother type.
ReplyDeleteInteresting review, and I'll get to my points. Love this second season. Nano doesn't bother me but needs a better plot point and focus. All main characters need to unite to take down these bastard Patriots. In one of the Revolution revealed shorts on NBC's page, David Lyons says "Well maybe Monroe wants to restart the Republic, or maybe he just sees a kid who wants power and says what he needs to in order to get his son to go with him….You decide." I definitely think it's the latter…I think Monroe is roping his son in to show him that family and people matter more than power; but proving that will take time. Connor needs to become attached to these people and to fighting for the RIGHT causes, like safety and protection for the greater good of this now broken country. I think Connor might get pissed at first after learning the truth, but I think the writers would be smart to keep him in the fold. Bass has already had too much loss. No reason to redeem a character only to take him back to hell. Miles needs to recognize his role in all the death and destruction that went down in the Republic, repent, and help keep his friend on track. THe best way to use Charloe now, in my opinion, is to have Charlie get wind of what Monroe is telling Connor, and for her to confront him. He can confess his TRUE intentions to her, and together they can help Connor come around…or at least she can keep Monroe from going bat-shit crazy again. Rachel…she just needs to get a grip. Love this show. There is so much potential…please writers, listen to your fans, take our ideas, get writing and keep it going!!
ReplyDeleteYES, someone else sees my view! I too think Bass is roping him. In the bar when they met, Bass made a point to say look, commanding legions is a dead end power grab. So, he had to lie to get him to come. But these are details Revolution forgets; goes into the details hole. Yes ma'am, any personal story for Charloe is great. Has not been any real intimate convos in the show, minus Bass and the graveyard. Everything seems so 'surface'. I read a review not long ago that called for the show to go darker. I agree. All this killing would evoke trauma and emotion on some level, so much character development you could do to make these guys more 3D. I keep waiting fo rthem to give charlie a journal, that she writes in, or Miles, plays the guitar, or something (in my head it works:) slow down sometimes at the conclusion of a fight, bring it together with some grounded moments that ties back to the unity and family of the group, as they struggle. The ep where Monroe dies, was one of my favs. They did slow down at the right times and even the Milies and Charlie bar scene, stopped and paused. Was so good; showed details, intamacy. Then poof next ep he's already out of the grave. Seeing that moment where Charlie and Miles saw him alive was a follow up to the emotional ride they took us on prior ep; but dripped it. It's like all these different writers taking a different path- comes of sporadic. Anyways. there you go! ha.
ReplyDeleteNope, read it again. I think it will struggle for a third season.
ReplyDeleteYeah, they did a fantastic job of playing out the action. I still consider it my favourite show ever.
ReplyDeleteSome interesting views there. I appreciate that this is the middle of the season, but actually from a serialized show, especially Revolution which only has 8 episodes left this season (as far as I know), I would hope that it kept a standard throughout. Even if not that, I would expect a fantastic episode like 'Everyone Says I Love You' to be followed up by some quality. OK, they are developing the characters, but there are so many flaws in the way they are being developed, as well as the story being told around them, it makes it hard to appreciate the development. I have been hugely disappointed recently.
ReplyDeleteIt's not so much the nano that annoys me. It's more the "wild goose chase" that Aaron is being sent on. I envision him arriving in Lubbock and being told to go to somewhere else. Then he gets there and is told to go somewhere else. It just annoys me that it is becoming so complicated, and other than the brief and seemingly pointless return of Grace, and the return of Priscilla, I don't see what we're getting out of it.
I still don't see the point of Tom and Julia taking down everyone. As soon as Tom realised she was alive, they could have just disappeared. This is Julia's doing, and we are yet to see any motive behind it. The flashbacks were alright but other than show us that they were killers and prepared to do anything 14 years ago, not just now, they were kinda pointless. They were similar to the Finch flashbacks in Lethe/Aletheia, which showed nothing except his father had Alzheimer's and that he thought of building the Machine 30 years before he did.
100% agree with you on this!
ReplyDeleteStart emailing NBC and creators of show-- it's now or never. I tweet them a lot and have emailed to please renew for S3.
ReplyDeleteSomeone on Revolution FB page mentioned they think Connor is still working for his Mexican daddy...they did leave him alive, after all, so that would be an interesting twist.
ReplyDeleteIt's two episodes of Person of Interest that recently aired back to back that go together.
ReplyDeleteGreat Read! I honestly could not have said better. Season 1 was great and I get what was going on the first half of this season but its almost like two different shows between seasons. Episodes 10,11,12 were not that great and I completely agree with your thoughts on the "captured" story arcs. I really love this show and want it to go to 5 or 6 seasons. When I first started watching it reminded me of LOST with the flashbacks and mythology but it has deviated from that model a little it seems. I hope everything plays out well for the final episodes of this season and we get at the very least a season 3.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, SO sorry Bradley!
ReplyDeleteI don't think Aaron's story will continue to be too much of a wild goose-chase. When we shows episodic like this and characters "branch off" and go different places, it seems a long time, but when you watch it back to back binge-style it's always so much shorter. Tom will finally be joining Texas next episode!
I think "Everyone Says I Love You" was a turning point. It was a climatic and now we have to work are way up to something again, as we are introduced to new characters and are letting others go...
"The flashbacks were alright but other than show us that they were killers and prepared to do anything 14 years ago"
They kind of had to be killers/manipulators or let their very young son die of starvation (I don't know where all the animals are, but seemingly lets say there just weren't a lot at this time LOL). -The other people could of just given them something, but refused. I agree that maybe they didn't have to kill them necessarily, but what it showed us was that Tom's whole life has been centered around what Julia always wanted him to be. In the other flashback from last season with them, we see Tom as an adult pre-blackout was constantly pushed around-had little authority, but was rather repressed (just ask the punching bag). It let's us further ponder who Nevelle would be or would have been with out her, because she is his center, his belief system. And what they build may come with a cost now...But also think Tom uses his family as an excuse to be unnecessarily cruel at times, but then again this might be world where for people like Tom, he has to be this way to survive...
With Pricilla what were getting at is again "second chances" or "redemption". I don't dispute that the writers will have to work hard to sell me that these two still romantically belong together (even though I'm still hoping for a continuous Cynthia revival), but that might exactly be one of the nanites motives...bringing people together at the right times, when people have "matured" and are ready to make real commitments(fate). Another possibility is that they might be together long enough to bring us to Peter and then turn around and kill Priscilla and allow Aaron and her to make amends (for their children's sake). Like I said, the next episode title might be pointing out more deaths and I think Priscilla, Julia, and Gene could all be potential loses.
I'm also not sure if all of Aaron's experience is "material". Obviously Cynthia is an astral projection (hence smoke monster & walt reference: Loyd Welliver), but it might be that maybe even "Grace" wasn't really there...Other than that the point of seeing her was a reminder and an element of fate. The last time we saw Grace was when Tom invaded the Tower, now we see Grace again and Tom is coming back to our gang. Hopefully we will see Grace again and get more of an explaination on "why" she left and/or needed to be alone "if" Grace was ever really there at all...(and to "have grace", a spiritual term, is to "have credit", "do with honor" and "have elegant movements". --To do the right thing = thematic to nanites divine role in universe)
I am not a fan of Charlie/Monroe but it would have been more interesting than the current Miles/Rachel story line
ReplyDeleteBut I don't think the writers are very flexible...they wanted Miles w/Rachel from the beginning even though it weakens both characters (especially Miles), and they admitted they were surprised by the chemistry between Charlie and Monroe so I think they will "force" another love story on us which will be Charlie w/Connor.
The only reason I would love to see Charlie/Monroe is to see Rachel's reaction..I don't like Rachel but have to admit she is a strong character when she is full of hatred and self-righteousness which is why her scenes with Monroe have been powerful in both seasons, and why her scenes with Miles in season 1 were great as well, but are nothing but boring in season 2.
I think the same thing about Bass roping his son in. He knows Miles would never help start the militia again. He just doesn't want Connor to bolt.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me worry, the fact they're going so fast now, that they already know there will be no season 3.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you re: the writers wanting Miles w/ Rachel all along. Imo, he and Nora oozed chemistry on-screen and they threw it away for this-- I think Rachel makes miles boring, whereas Monroe makes Miles badass again. I think any scene with Miles, Monroe and Charlie is great, whether just 2 of them or all 3. But apart, Miles and Charlie both flounder, as Charlie isn't given enough to do and Miles is boring. Monroe, actually, is pretty good in just about any scene, no matter who he's with, imo.
ReplyDeleteIg you do anything with your life by way of new show, banshee is blow your mind good at the thrill ride and action. There are some great reviews out there to back me :) It's the best show on TV right now.
ReplyDeleteOh, I took it as you meaning, it will struggle in season 3. Not, will struggle to get a season 3. My bad.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that someone else agrees!!! I hate the love story between Miles and Rachel, even in season one! The best part was when she slapped him in the face. Second season..... UGH! Their boring love story is making Twilight look like a Harlequin novel!!!!! Not looking forward to next week's gratuitous sex scene!!!! I can't stand the whole Charloe thing either! The character is way too old for her considering he is 45 and she is only 20!
ReplyDeleteI like her and Connor much better! At least have a love triangle between her Jason and Connor! That would be interesting lol
ReplyDeleteI also don't enjoy Miles/Rachel, which is one reason I've only watched here and there after it became clear they were going to force that pairing into existence despite a complete lack of chemistry and the two characters just not doing anything compelling or interesting for each other. I also don't like the way it sullies both of them into the type of people who would cheat on a husband/brother. I can respect a story with betrayal and flawed characters that ultimately goes somewhere interesting and has something about the character you can root for, but IMHO Miles and Rachel don't bring any positives to the table when with each other and come with a boatload of negatives which make them very unappealing to root for as a couple. And this is said as someone who considered them two of the most interesting and watchable characters before they started trying to force them into a couple.
ReplyDeleteI don't enjoy Miles/Rachel either. I thought the characters were interesting on their own, but are awful and mismatched when forced into a couple (which has no chemistry I can see.)
ReplyDeleteI agree- I like both actor's although I hate the character, Rachel-- she just bugs me to no end. But, like you said, zero chemistry and putting them together onscreen, and being a viewer having to sit through that, is not much fun.
ReplyDeleteYou lost me when you said the best part of the show is the bromance and Connor.
ReplyDeleteMonroe is great. Has always been great. Connor is cool. Miles doesn't interest me. Especially now with the writers making him a good man and forgetting everything bad he's done. Including the very bad things he's done to Rachel.
I didn't sign up for bromance. I still remember the first promotional videos. This show was supposed to be centered around the young female character Charlie. She would be the one that would light the way. Now the show is barely about her.
That's why I think the first half of the first season was actually the best moment of the show. Because it was about Charlie and her journey to find Danny, explore this new world and light the way.
Danny who was a very important character dies for nothing. A huge stupidity done by this show. If only the Rachel and Monroe relationship was more developed and layered through his death...
Another problem with this show is how they don't explore more of the world after the blackout. It was supposed to be a show about a world without energy and technology. How it affects and changes the world and the people? There's too much action. I agree with you. The capture and rescue or mission of the week. The show should be more about developing the characters and exploring the world without energy around them.
Am I the only who doesn't see chemistry between Monroe and Charlie? Romantic or sexual chemistry.
ReplyDeleteCharlie is a kid to Monroe. That's how Monroe sees Charlie.
Monroe is similar to her uncle Miles to Charlie. That's how Charlie sees Monroe.
Now Monroe and Rachel is another story. There's some crazy chemistry and fire between them. The writers were right to describe them as a "gasoline and a match".
Now that's a relationship that is interesting to watch.
Rachel and Monroe would've been much better than Rachel and Miles. An 'enemies and lovers', 'love and hate' type of relationship.
You have some good points there, but some of the things you find disagreeable have to be examined closer. For example, I'm not 100% sure Monroe really wants to become a despot again. It might very well be that he's using the Monroe Republic as a ruse to lure his son away from the cartel and have him near him. Lyons hinted at that possibility himself in a Revolutions Revealed for that ep. The typhus thing is a stretch, but I don't believe they cooked it post-blackout. I think they had it on reserve, along with the cure. To prove that assertion, I remind viewers that the nuclear bombings were orchestrated well in advance as well. The President (from what little we saw of his figure) was informed that it had taken place but as if a piece of a plan had just been set into motion. On a side note, I honestly don't think it's delusional to think that Monroe could gain power again. If he exposes the Patriots and does his mea culpas...if he not only appears as savior to a whole new branch of people and ousts the ones that really did drop the bombs...if he shows his transformation via showing that Miles (a man known to have hated Monroe and who joined with the rebels) worked with and supported him in his fight against the Patriots, it could happen. People have fallen and forgiven for less. However, I still see it as a ruse. Don't get me wrong; he's a warrior. However, I don't think he'd go back to that dark place of paranoia and box full of crazy again. Besides, Vairo is still listed as a recurring guest star. He might not even survive past Season 2.
ReplyDeleteSome see it; some don't. I am a die-hard Charloe shipper. Had completely written off Revolution until Season 2 (when I forgot to delete my timer and though "what the heck...why not?" That scene with Charlie stalking a shirtless Monroe had me intrigued but what hooked me was the swimming pool scene. I'll be honest; Charloe is the pull for me all the way. If they eliminate that possibility, I'm hittin' the road. Not from anger or pettiness but b/c it honestly is the one and only thing I'm interested in.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the bromance thing, but it should not be front and centre. Even so, it is the only thing on the show at the moment that doesn't make me shout at the screen. I'd agree, Charlie has been featured way too little this season.
ReplyDeleteYep. There's no real development on the blackout thing. So far we've seen nanites which are technological, altered typhus which presumably uses technology. So how is this Revolution? It should be called A Small Revolution From The Current World But Not Enough That Electricity Doesn't Exist.
I first read someone imply a Charlie/Monroe thing over Christmas, and I was shocked. I don't get how anyone sees any chemistry between the two. As you say, he is much older and killed her brother. I don't really like the idea of Rachel and Monroe either. And Rachel/Miles annoys me. Just get rid of all the relationship stuff, would be better.
