The Originals - Review of Episode 1.11 - Apres Moi, le Deluge?

Jan 25, 2014

This week’s ‘Apres Moi, le Deluge?’ is my favorite episode of the season so far. I have been waiting for the Harvest storyline to be resolved since it first got mentioned and I was not disappointed. Because Davina was never supposed to have that kind of power, nature starts acting up. As Sophie predicted, Davina brings on earthquakes, storms, enough rain to swim in and fire. When Sophie fails to harness Celeste’s power, the Originals offer her their mother’s. I feel like we don’t know enough about Esther, I do hope we’ll get flashbacks at some point on this show (when they can get the actress back). After a lot of discussing whether or not to finish the Harvest, Davina finally agrees. However it doesn’t go as planned when the four sacrificed girls don’t wake up. Meanwhile Hayley regrets helping Sophie and comes clean to Elijah, who is not happy with her. Klaus shows Hayley he’s helped his family of werewolves find shelter in the church, showing her that he’s not heartless after all.

Favorite scene: I’m going to go with the obvious one this time: the Harvest. From the moment Marcel carried Davina in, to Sophie realizing she failed and her niece is not coming back. Everyone’s reaction to Davina’s death showed perfectly that they have in fact grown to care for her. We all knew this scene was coming from the moment it first got mentioned earlier in the season, but I never expected her to go willingly. Then again, who would’ve guessed Davina would’ve turned into a human natural disaster. The rain was a great touch, it made the scene more haunting (not that it wasn’t already). As much as I have disliked Sophie’s methods to finish this, I couldn’t help but feel bad when it didn’t work. So many people, including her sister, sacrificed themselves for this, only for it to fail. I have no doubt Davina will come back somehow, but I really wanted Monique to be resurrected. After losing Tim, Davina deserved to have another person in her corner.
Most heartbreaking scene: I love the bond between Davina and Marcel. He tried so hard to protect her only to lose her anyway. He loved her like she was his family. His scene with Klaus broke my heart. Klaus comforting shows me that whatever hostility Klaus felt towards him when he first got back to town, is now gone. However I’m not sure the same can be said for Marcel. He clearly still blames Klaus in some way, saying they were fine until he came back. He’ll undoubtedly also blame the witches, since they started all of this in the first place.

Best ‘wtf’ scene: Okay, so this is where my jaw really hit the floor: Sabine is Celeste. Now I’ve got questions. Is Sabine just possessed? What is she planning? (We know it can’t be good.) And does this count as one of the resurrections? Because if not, that would mean there’s still one spot open that could potentially bring Davina back. Now the guy about the ones she did bring back. The guy looks like trouble, and judging from the synopsis of next week’s episode, he will be. We know one of the women was killed during the first Harvest, so she’s definitely going to want to get revenge on Marcel. The second woman however is a bit of a mystery. Her clothes look to be from the 20’s. We know the Originals were in Chicago at the time, but since this was not long after they fled New Orleans, it’s possible they crossed paths. Celeste wouldn’t have brought them back unless they had some serious power, so I can’t wait to see them in action.
Most haunting scene: The harness of Esther’s power was hauntingly beautiful. There were barely any words spoken, but it’s still a scene that managed to stay with me. Not sure how Esther would’ve have felt about her kids doing this but I can’t seem to get myself to care. I loved the moment where the knife keeps getting passed through, uniting them.

Best speech: I just had to talk about this scene. When Davina finally agrees to the Harvest. The speech she gave Marcel was just so beautiful. How she says that if this is it, it’s been good. Brought tears to my eyes. It’s amazing how my feelings about Davina have changed from the first episode. She went from my least favorite character to one of my favorites.

Best chemistry moment: As someone who has lately been leaning more towards Klaus and Hayley, even I can’t deny that there were major sparks between Hayley and Elijah in that last scene. Neither of them can deny that there is something between them, but both seem afraid to take the leap. And I assume that it will get even more complicated now that Celeste is back.
Character that should’ve been in this episode: Considering this episode was Davina-centric, I was surprised that Josh was not in it. I get that he doesn’t have access to the house and is trying to steer clear of Klaus, but it still felt off. He’s her best friend, and has already proven that he’s willing to die for her. So it baffles me that there wasn’t even a mention of him.

Scene that was missing: So everyone who also watches ‘The Vampire Diaries’ knows that two of the Originals made an appearance in this week’s 100th episode. Now for those of you who don’t, here’s a quick summary: Klaus came back to gloat over Katherine’s not yet cold body, and instead of doing so ended up having sex with Caroline in the woods. Not sure why Rebekah came, since she was only on screen for 10 seconds but she saved Matt from suffocating in a safe (a scene I personally found adorable), and dropped Tyler off. Now here’s my problem. Considering there were 2 episodes of ‘The Originals’ before this episode of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ aired, I expected there to be a mention of their trip to Mystic Falls. It’s highly unlikely they just left in the middle of all this craziness. Also a scene where Rebekah breaks Tyler out would have been welcome. Along with the reason why Elijah, who is the only Original who should have been there to say goodbye to Katherine, didn’t accompany them. If there’s no mention of any of this in next week’s episode, they’ll have one pissed off viewer on their hands. The writers could take a page from Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice.

Best quotes: Klaus: “Are there any more inopportune deaths you’d like to wave in my face?” Elijah: “Give me a month. I’ll get you a list.”
Klaus: “Young, old, dead or alive. Witches are a pain in the ass.”
Klaus: “This is not a democracy.” Elijah: “You’re quite right, this is family.”

So this week’s review was a little longer than usual, but I hope you guys like it. Next week we’ll see the aftermath in ‘Dance Back from the Grave’. Check in again for a new review and share your opinion on this week’s episode in the comments.

  2. I wouldn't go as far as to say this is the best episode of the season but it was pretty decent.
I am glad Davina lost her power, i want her to come back and start dealing with people as a normal witch. I felt like her super power was casting a shadow on her. She was a tool, an enemy, an ally - but now she can get friends who will like her and fight for her not because they want her on their team but for her personality. Now she is just a girl, and that is a lot more interesting to watch.
I don't think the ritual is resolved yet. The Harvest was finished but the Reaping was botched somehow by Celeste.
Wouldn't it be great if Elijah and Celeste got together? I am really digging the possibility of mixed couple and they look so hot together.
Another thing i liked was how worried the Originals were for Davina, how much they wanted her to come back. Their humanity was showing when Sophie slit her throat and she didn't come back. Hayley couldn't look and Rebekah even had trouble witnessing it. I thin kit's the first time we saw originals behave so human all at the same time over a girl who hurt them literally last episode.

  3. "Klaus and Hayley"

Is this actually ment to be a thing ?
I kept thinking the writers were brave enough and would actually have the first parents on TV that are neither married or together

  4. I'm going to predict all four girls getting resurrected once the other witches are killed.

  5. Don't know if they're ever going to go there, if they do it probably won't be anytime soon. This is just what my crazy shipper heart is saying, I tend to ship the non-obvious ones

  6. they feel kinda 'too obvious' for me because of the baby, now Sophie/Klaus, that would be surprising

  7. When Celeste revealed herself to the 3 witches she said something like I've had to deal with eople calling me Sabine for a year, it's Celeste. So Sabine has been in town, plotting for at least a year, Davina will most likely be the 4th resurrection.

I actually felt a bit sorry for Sophie she brought this whole thing on and is pretty much indirectly responsible for a bunch of deaths, including her sister and neice.

  8. Great review. I loved this episode, by far my favorite of the season and there has been some really great 9/episodes. I loved all of the character development and the humanity of the vampires shining through. As someone who loathed Klaus since his TVD days, I am really growing fond of his character. The Celine/Sabine thing really blew my mind, it wasn't until the last minute that I realized who Sabine really was, cannot wait for this to all unfold. The cast all has such great chemistry that I don't mind any of the couples, although I have my preferences. Oh and I def feel like Josh should have been in the episode after all he was doing to protect her in the previous episode. It was a bit weird to say the least.
The TVD crossover was not needed, I wouldn't mind if they never crossed paths again tbh, TVD makes me despise Klaus all over again. Because Klaroline is such an unbearable pairing, IMO. But at least I can say confidently that it is over for good. I do love Matt/Rebekah, but I could have done without the 10 second scene. I do hope they have mention of it on TO though bc otherwise, what's the point. I really wish they would have shown Rebekah releasing Tyler in the last TO episode though.

And for the love of all things, PLEASE NO MORE ESTHER. I had enough of her on TVD.

  9. I think that Jane-Anne is responsible for her daughter's death. And other parents. They should never allowed their kids throats get sliced simply because it's an honor. They didn't tell their kids the truth about how it will go down as well.
Yes sophie eintervened and brought Marcel in but now we know that Celeste was already around and planning to take the power for herself. She would have messed up the ritual even if Sophie didn't. Hopefully even if Monique doesn't come back it will be a small comfort to Sophie once they find out Celeste stopped girls from being resurrected last episode.

  10. I wouldn't mind more Esther the way she used to be before getting killed and brainwashed by witches. She loved her kids back then and had an affair with Klaus dad. I need to see it in flashbacks so badly.

  11. i wonder if Sophie will hit rock bottom now that the harvest failed not because of her but i think she will blaim herself and will start doing crazy things too find a way to get the girls back....
It was a great episode i felt sorry for Davina she survived one week to die at the next (bad luck much¿?) here again we saw moments when Klaus showed a little bit more of his humanity torwards the people he cares about, it`s always nice to see him having actual feelings and not being a total A** all the time...
Rebbecah was great in the episode she sometimes seems like selfish but her character has grown a lot since the first time we saw her in TVD how she wanted to protect Devina and was hurt when she died was really good, that is why she is my favorite character...
And now we have Sabine/Celeste poor Elijah his love life will be a little bit more F**** up than already is!... and here im thinking if Sabine/Celeste dies will the Harvest be complete and all the girls will be alive again and also the power that the bones of Moma original brought Sabine has them too¿?¿?

  12. Was that her plan all along or did she come up with it after The Originals showed up? One of the witches she brought back was one of the Elders Marcel killed, why bring her back if Celeste's plan was to take power herself?

Even if The Coven is responsible for the 4 girls deaths and the deaths, Sophie is indirectly responsible (IMO) for the a lot of the other deaths.

  13. This episode was fantastic. I've really grown to like Davina as well, so I was really sad when her and the other girls weren't resurrected. It goes for me as well that this was my favorite episode yet. I loved it!
The Celeste/Sabine reveal was a real shocker! It has me really excited for what could happen next.

  14. I think Celeste was planning something already before the messed up ritual. It's clear she is pissed at klaus and wants revenge, she hasn't moved on at all.
Maybe Bastiana comes from important bloodline or she has a bone to pick with Marcel for killing her. i wonder who killed the red headed witch. Maybe it was Elijah or Rebekah, then all 4 witches will have personal reasons for wanting them dead.
I think things will become more clear once we find out how Celeste came back a year ago. Maybe they tie it up to events in TVD. The same way crazy Qutsiah came back.

  15. Great job with the review! I liked how you separated it in sections. This was my favorite episode of the season as well. It was very well done. My favorite scene was also The Harvest. The scene was poignant, tragic, and had layers of emotion and character moments, without much speaking; while letting the silence, ambience, and gravity of the ritual hit the audience. (I'm not even going to address how wrong it is to get more magic by killing off teenage girls...misogynist AND abusive to, essentially, children). I also agree that it was glaring how Josh was completely absent from this episode, given how he and Davina have become best friends. They could've added a throwaway scene with him standing in the distance of the cemetery, crying when Davina was killed. I hope you and others are right, and that Davina (and perhaps the other three girls) will be resurrected. I've come to really like her character.

As an aside, I can't stand Sophie. I think she's so useless, and such a flat character. It'd be great if, after Davina has been resurrected, and gets to be normal for a while; that they kill off Sophie, and somehow Davina gets all of Esther's powers, once again making Davina a powerful witch (but perhaps more in control than last time she was all powerful).

  16. I think I am one of the only peeps that didn't like the last Hayley/Elijah scene, she came off as bit of a brat to me.

  17. I liked the Makekah scene a lot but if an original HAD to stay at home to babysit Hayley then I really think it should have been Rebekah instead since Elijah should have wanted to see Kat one last time. Unless I guess Klaus suspects Rebekah is plotting against him I guess, then I'd see him insisting Elijah be the one that stays home. But regardless, I agree, there should have been some sort of set up in TO for the TVD crossover, TVD did it when Tyler went to NOLA after breaking it off with Caroline.
