Thanks to Bruce_F for the heads up.
Law & Order alum Jesse L. Martin is set to co-star opposite Grant Gustin in the CW pilot The Flash, based on the DC comic. The project, from Warner Bros TV and Berlanti Productions, is an origin story about Barry Allen aka The Flash (Gustin), a Central City assistant police forensics investigator who arrives in Starling to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past. Martin will play Detective West, an honest, blue-collar cop who is a surrogate father to Allen.

I thought they were shooting for Ernie Hudson. Not complaining, just curious.

  2. This sounds like a great decision, Jesse L. Martin will add some experienced acting chops to the show. Looking better with each announcement.

  3. He's 68 years old and I think that's a bit too old to play a character that is supposed to be two decades younger.

  4. Good, I liked him in L&O and hope I like him here too.

  5. Neat, finally an actor that doesen't look like theCW carried him out of their 'hot young but talentless actors' box

  6. He was up for the role and met with the producers as far as I know. The show probably just decided they wanted to go younger. If Martin's character ends up getting in on as much action as Quentin Lance does in Arrow, the producers may have figured that the role would be a bit to active for someone Hudson's age.

  7. Never seen him in anything, so I'll save my judgement till later.

  8. Solid choice hope he gets more to do than Quentin.

  9. What a completely unfounded statement. The CW hires reputable veteran actors in series regular roles all the time:

    David Ramsey
    Paul Blackthorne
    Susanna Thompson
    Mark Pellegrino
    Melinda Clarke
    Tim Matheson

    etc. etc. etc.

  10. Susanna Thompson, David Ramsay, Manu Bennett, Paul Blacksworth.. There are many actors on Arrow that match this description too.

  11. speaking for Flash as a series specifically wich so far only had babyface Grant

  12. So you decided to pounce on a potential series that had only cast one character so far? That makes little sense to me.

  13. to me it does, we've had a sortof finalized lead cast for the originals last year so the lack of Flash casting news lately forces me to believe that casting is incredibly tricky OR it'll just be a very small one. Wich scares me as currently I can't see Gustin carry a show on his own

  14. The comparison between Originals and Flash would only make any sense if both shows shared producers but they don't. These are two completely different creative teams with their own respective processes for doing things. If Flash producers are taking their time it's more likely because they have more time to put things together and because they seem to be a little more discriminating (the good kind, not the bad kind) in their casting choices.

I don't see any point on worrying about Gustin carring a show yet either. They've cast two people. Until we find out how big the cast will be and who they hire to fill the roles, there's really no point in doing any hand-wringing about the potential acting load that Grant Gustin may or may not have to shoulder.

  15. They were originally gonna do a backdoor pilot, so they didn't a full cast, as with many shows that are ordered to series from a backdoor pilot, other characters are added later on. But after they decided to make a separate pilot, they probably had to revise the roles for the pilot.

  16. Great choice! I've liked him ever since that X-Files episode when he played the baseball-loving alien.

  17. Sounds great. I liked him in L & O and he was in Rent as well. Now I've got that song stuck in my head. :-)

  18. He's not Ernie Hudson, but I also love Jesse so I'm happy!

  20. Ha! That's a better one to get stuck in your head than 525, 600 minutes. I once needed a math warm-up so I made my kids do the math on that one.

  21. Ok i didn't know who he was by name. Had to look him up, his face was familiar, then i had to figure out where i knew him from. I know him from Rent. Ew, i blocked that movie out. lol But alright let's see what he has in store for us.
