"I'd call you now to tell you I'm thinking of you
But it does me no good when the phone is just blocking my view
And I would sail back to you...And I would sail back to you
And I would come back and admit that it wasn't your fault
But I'm tired and unwilling to be the only one who was wrong"

Each week and with each episode of The Blacklist I try to decipher what the writers are trying to tell us. Great shows always have deeper meanings conveyed to the audience via some device that makes the show that much better. For example LOST had its hidden treasures and Breaking Bad told a complete story using color palettes. Television shows sometimes use a mixture of different hidden plot elements to enrich the viewing experience. What I have noticed up to this point in The Blacklist is the music. The lyrics at the top of this page was selected from the song you heard playing at the end and besides being a great piece of music it also made the episode richer and feel more complete. Song selection in The Blacklist by the writers are just one more reason to tune in every week and love this show.
The villainous blacklister this week is Eric Trettel, The Alchemist. Essentially he is someone who protects the guilty by preying (read: killing) the innocent. A former med-school dropout, he forged his way into labs focusing on DNA transcription and the Human Genome Project to learn his trade. He helps people "disappear" but not in the same fashion as our Mr. Reddington does so well and with a little less murder. The Alchemist finds similar looking people to his clients, whether they be men or women, or the very young or old and not only kills them but transforms their bodies to be identical to them in every way. Whoever is looking for them thinks they are dead due to his unique talent. He uses tattoo artistry, saliva sampling, but best of all, DNA sampling to convince authorities performing tests that the deceased are in fact the people who The Alchemist is helping to disappear.
Red continued his search this week for the FBI mole by enlisting an entire squad of whistle-blowers (hinting that they used to work for a man named Julian, wink wink). I thought that was very funny. Red is determined to find out who betrayed him and after watching the killing spree he implemented last week I would not want be that person. They use all sorts of software equipment and one neat computer program they acquired pieced together shreds of paper back to their original form. I want that program by the way. I'm not involved in any criminal activities so don't be alarmed; I am just a little absent-minded sometimes and shred things without thinking that I wish I could get back. After some more quips about Julian, Reds' deciphering team unveils what they think is pertinent information and that is an understatement. On the screen in front of Red disassembled strips of previously shredded paper materializes to form what appears to be a government document. It was only up for an instant but you could catch a glimpse of "Meera M" as the author for a request of schematic----and that's all we see because the screen cuts the rest out. I'm sure it was schematic "blue-prints" being requested for the "Post Office". Meera requested the information on behalf of some criminal entity to give to Anslo Garrick, our blacklister from a few episodes back that kidnapped and tortured Red. Meera's motives for betraying Red is unknown and actually at that point of the episode I was still a little skeptical that Meera did anything wrong. Anything can happen when you think of the turns and twists the writers of The Blacklist pull on us.
Speaking of turns and twists, the B Story this week was all about our favorite couple, Liz and Tom. The writers were definitely playing games with us this week and Tom was at the center. There were at least 2 or 3 instances where the writing team wanted us to question Tom's loyalty and I believe those moments were deliberate by them to throw us off the scent and think he was the one that delivered Red's whereabouts to Garrick. The first moment was when Tom came back from his trip to Nebraska for his supposed job interview. He says to Liz he was in Nebraska but did not make it to the interview because he did not want to put her in a position of choosing between her career and him. I'll admit now I am a little more confused about Tom and whether or not he is a bad or good guy. In that scene I immediately thought of the last time we know of Tom going to an interview and how that turned out but all I kept thinking was "he's smart, he got to go where ever he needed to be and since he didn't attend the interview there is no one to contact to contradict his lie" (I don't actually talk like that in my head). Very cunning Mr. Keen, if that is your real name. Just kidding, I'm sure that's his real name and he could very well be telling the truth. I'm also sure we will not find out Tom's true nature until the Season Finale months from now. Tom brings up the notion of adopting a baby again with Liz and tells her flat out that she has too many secrets and reminds her that he has "none"...or does he, jk. Liz and Tom host their baby shower and that's where they meet Jolene who is later revealed to be a substitute teacher working at Tom's school. This is the second moment I thought the writers were trying to throw us a curve-ball when she had a file-folder with Tom Keen written on it. Jolene introduces herself during a Tom/Liz argument and Liz has to run off in the middle to go catch bad guys. This gives Jolene ample amount of time to flirt with Tom which is what I think she was doing. She invites Tom to take Liz to a photography exhibit with her and some friends. After cooking a romantic dinner for him and Liz and subsequently stood up by her Tom, visibly upset that him and his wife are drifting apart, takes Jolene up on her offer but attends the exhibit alone, much to Jolene's satisfaction.
The episode ends with Tom out with Jolene and company having a good time, and Ressler having dinner with Audrey apparently reconciling their relationship. We also see Red awaiting Meera in her apartment. When she enters he says "I trust you know why I'm here" to which she replies "You're here to kill me, because I'm the mole". dun dun dun. I am a little suspicious of what is the actual truth behind the whole matter because Red didn't kill her immediately so I'm sure there is something we don't know that we will hopefully discover in the weeks to come.
Overall, I thought this was a good episode with many deceiving plot elements I enjoy watching in The Blacklist. I like trying to figure out who people are siding with and their motivations and we received more clues in this episode. This also seems like an important episode moving forward as we try to figure out what will happen between our beloved Liz and Tom. I am positive he is going to be in a lot of trouble from Liz but not as much trouble as Meera is going to be in when that conversation between her and Red is revealed.

Thoughts & Questions
-When Red was in the Temple he was looking at a picture of a girl named Lucy Brooks. Who is she? Is Lucy Brooks her real name?
-Liz brought Red The Alchemists' list of clients that Aram found on Trettels' database. When Liz gave it to Red he rushed off after putting the list in his pocket. Is there someone on the list that Red needed to find? Like Liz asked, who is Red looking for? Is it Lucy Brooks? Could Lucy Brooks be on that list and Red needed the FBI to take The Alchemist down to find her? We know she is important to the story and I'm anxious to find out how she fits into the whole story.
-Was Tom really in Nebraska? All we know for sure is he watched Real Housewives that Liz saw on their Netflix account. He could have watched that anywhere.
-Did anyone else find it odd that Tom and Liz were hosting their own baby shower for a baby they don't even know they are going to adopt yet?
-Did anyone else notice that Jolene's eyes were blue like the the girl in the song that was playing at the end?...no?...I'm the only crazy guy?
-What is Red going to do with Meera?!?
-What did you guys think of the episode? What do you think will happen between Tom and Liz?
Thanks for reading everyone. Please comment below with your thoughts and/or questions!
Thanks for the review. Just off to read it now!
ReplyDeleteAs I said in the "What do you think poll", I am more interested in Tom's secret life than his and Lizzie's marital issues. And who here even cares about Ressler's love life?
ReplyDeleteMeera being the Mole was so shocking! I can't wait until next Monday!
ReplyDeleteI'm fairly certain Jolene and Lucy Brooks are one and the same. Where they are heading with this, I have no idea!
ReplyDeleteI think there is a reason why she did it..........and she was an outside person that was brought in.........so Fowler would be in trouble too
ReplyDeleteYou're right! I just took a few screenshots. Where are they heading with all of this?!? Thanks for posting Amelia!
ReplyDeleteI agree! A few people guessed it correctly but I was still a little skeptical before this episode aired. There is something we learn in the next episode I'm sure. Then I think we get a 4 week break from the show...I think.
ReplyDeleteLol, I don't think there are too many people concerned with Ressler's love life and to be honest I'm not entirely sure why they are adding it into the show. Maybe there is something more to it?
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Sharon.
ReplyDeleteYep. Although Meera being the mole was shocking, it wasn't as shocking as when the person (not spoiling it) was revealed who the mole was on Scandal back in Season 2.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I'm confused with the Tom plot. Why is he so insistent on adopting a child? Wasn't he supposed to be a bad guy? Red is pretty much on it and I trust him about that. It's getting annoying these circular, pointless red herrings.
ReplyDeleteLucy and Jolene are the same girl, so now I'm curious about her interest on Tom.
And last WTF with Ressler and Audrey! Ugh. I love this show, but they tend to add some stpuid, unnecessary subplots. She left him because he was obsessed in catching Red, why the heck does she think going back to him now will be different?
I think Lucy Brooks could be Red's daughter and might be Liz's sister? I think he needed The Alchmist's list to confirm she wasn't dead and that he faked her death.
ReplyDeleteYeah and Ressler is one of the characters I least like in this show, and I have to say that part of it is because I don't enjoy looking at him. I think he is one of the least handsome guys on all TV shows I watch nowadays, and what can I do, I'm shallow, lol.
ReplyDeleteNever saw Scandal but have been meaning to. I heard the first season was ok but Season 2 is great.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree with you. I was thinking the same thing. I think you are going to be right on with that one.
ReplyDeleteI think it's the writers trying to confuse the viewers. I also wondered why he is so persistent on adopting a baby, moving to Nebraska and/or wanting Liz to quit her job. And I am also wondering what the whole story is with Lucy. There have been little bits of info about her in past episodes so she is obviously important to Red in some way..
ReplyDeleteMeera being the mole didn't surprise me, the way Fowler cleared her last episode had me suspicious.
ReplyDeleteRessler, really? Eugh.
I'm not sure how I feel about the Tom storyline. It makes me uneasy. I've been wary about him from the start, it was a glasses I think, haha!
I think it's interesting with Jolene though. She's up to something, especially with the file on Tom. She also looks a lot like Lucy, the girl in the newspaper clipping that Red was looking at. How it all ties together is still a mystery to me though. I'm curious to follow that developing tidbit.
WHY is Red so determined to screw Lizzie and Tom relationship ¿? he now hires someone to what¿? put them appart¿? this Jolene woman is the same thet he took the photo a few episodes back one that is supposed to be dead right?... Tom i`m still rooting for you DONT BE A BAD GUY!
ReplyDeleteI dont know why they put Ressler girl in the picture, maybe something will happen to her in later episodes cause i dont the point of the storyline¿?
Meera being the mole that was completely unexpected and i liked it now i wwanna see what are her reasons and i think maybe the old guy that threatened Red is behind that
If you read the comments below, me and other people did mention it, especially because it IS the same girl.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Fowler has something to do with it also???
ReplyDeleteI'm not entirely sure Red hired Jolene. Jolene and Lucy Brooks, the girl in the newspaper clipping, are the same person but Red is searching for her so I don't think he hired her.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about Ressler. Not sure why they put him in a relationship but I'm sure there is some relevance to it that will be revealed at some point.
Amelia mentioned that the Jolene and Lucy are identical and I mentioned the other parts in my Thoughts and Discussions.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you also that Jolene is intentionally trying to get into Tom's life.
Lol, glasses makes everyone look suspicious, hahaha.
ReplyDeleteThe Jolene storyline is definitely going to be interesting. At first I thought that maybe Tom knew who she was before they met (not just at the school). Then I watched the episode again and I don't think he does.
I don't trust Ressler's female companion. Neither the Substitute teacher.
ReplyDeleteAnother great review Geo! Thank you. I think the music selection that is put into this show is not given enough attention. Like last week's episode, this weeks music had a great impact on the show. I have been bugged all along about the string along we get with Tom. I'm sure he is up to no good, and I am dying to find out what Red knows about him and IF Red will tell Lizzie or not!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking Lucy was either a love interest of Red's, before he became a criminal, or a daughter maybe?
Glasses either make you look really smart, or really creepy/suspicious. There's no in between.
ReplyDeleteI also thought that with Tom perhaps knowing Jolene, so I'm interesting in seeing the path they take. Especially with her putting herself in his life. It's all just a big set up for something.
Thank you very much! I appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteYou are right about the music. The writers pick great songs for this show. I'm sure Tom is up to no good as well but I don't think we will find out for some time. My big question is If Red KNOWS that Tom is bad and Liz needs to watch out for him why doesn't he just tell her what he knows? The only thing I can surmise is What he knows about Tom is not something dangerous enough to tell her right away. That's why I don't think he is a spy or something like that. But it just doesn't make sense that Red doesn't tell her what he knows and save her from Tom....maybe he doesn't have proof??? Lol, I could go on forever.
I think Lucy is a little young to be a love interest for Red. Possibly sister to Liz, I can see that. I think Lucy is the girl that we saw running in the yard when Red was reminiscing out the window of that house he blew up. Remember that scene?
Either way its definitely intriguing and I haven't been this into a shows' mysteries since LOST!....maybe Breaking Bad....and Sleepy Hollow....
I agree...about the glasses thing and the other thing you said, and I'm interested in seeing what happens when Red finds out that Tom went on a date with the girl he is looking for. Although, can we really call it a date? Did he really do anything wrong? This is going to open up a whole comment thread isn't it? lol
ReplyDeleteI guarantee Red says to Liz "I told you so" when the big reveal about Tom happens. That would be funny.
Bored out of my mind with Tom and Lizzie. I am starting not to like Lizzie due to Tom partly, and she seems a little stupid for a supposed sharp FBI agent. She touches her ear when someone talks on stakeouts, she looks right at the bad guys and she does dumb stuff like walk into the gas station situation unarmed and by herself and with no hostage training. Aram is getting good and funny. Parminder is always interesting and her and Red should be good together. I like the villains each week. I think they are interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt would be absolutely hilarious! But I can just imagine Liz being all like 'I should have trusted you, blah blah' and Red just shrugging his shoulders all cockishly.
ReplyDeleteLOL! That's exactly what would happen! ...hahaha we should write an episode...lol
ReplyDeleteI'm actually interested to see where the whole Tom story line is going. Are you not the least bit intrigued as to whether or not he is a bad guy or good guy? But I agree with you about Liz, she is not asking the right questions about Tom. I wonder why she doesn't grill Red about what he knows other than "He is not who he seems".
ReplyDeleteAnd Aram is great, very funny and I'm really glad he turned not to be the mole.
I don't think that Jolene/Lucy was the same girl in the picture from The Stewmaker's book...my theory? I think The Stewmaker killed his wife...that's who the pic was of.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right Rhonda. You are definitely right about the picture in The Stewmaker's book. It looked too old to be that of Jolene/Lucy. Thank you very much!
ReplyDeletethere is something in that bunny rabbit stuffed toy Of Liz's
