Teen Wolf - My Wish List for 3B and Beyond / Review

1 Jan 2014

Happy 2014 everyone. In the spirit of new beginnings, Teen Wolf starts season 3B next Monday, not as a continuation of the first 12 episodes thus far but more like a new season altogether. New villains, new challenges. Lose your mind, indeed. As such, here is my wish list for the "new" season based on the 2, yes 2, rewatches of season 3A I've done this holiday break. While spoilers have shown that some of these will not come true, it would make for a great 3B. Feel free to add your own wishes in the comments below.

10. No momentum killing, angst for angst's sake, story crushing love triangles

Allison and Isaac together, Allison and Scott together, Scott and Isaac together? I don't care. Just do NOT make it a part of what plays out on my TV. Almost every single time the momentum comes to a screeching halt in Teen Wolf, it is because of Allison or Scott's relationship issues. No tattoo stories of non-communication reward. No wacky note passing or seat choosing hijinks. Absolutely no long glances at your love with their new love. Most importantly, do not ruin these characters through some dumb love triangle that puts all this stuff in the forefront and takes up valuable action time. No drippy characters period.

9. Kill off Gerard and Duke / Stop killing off all the females

Teen Wolf has a bad reputation for killing off all the female villains while keeping the male ones. It's now incredibly off balance and frankly annoying since many time the females are more entertaining than their male counterparts. Of our main male villains, Peter, Gerard, and Deucalion are still alive, Ennis and Matt are dead, and Jackson and the Alpha Twins are alive and reformed. Of our main female villains, Kate, Mama Argent, Blake, and Kali are all dead. Period. Yes, Hallucination Kate will be haunting Allison in 3B but she's still dead and will probably be dispatched fairly quickly. This causes 2 problems for me:

1. They kill off too many females period, especially the wrong ones. Mystery Motorcycle Chick could have been a fascinating new character with lots of depth, but she's killed in the premiere and we're left with Cora, a poor substitute of whine and angst. Why show? Why?

2. We are now stuck with lame duck villains that weren't that cool to begin with. I have no idea why Gerard is still living much less on screen with his black goo problem. He doesn't make Allison more interesting and his info has only been 50-50 so far. Bringing him back in for many episodes just reminds me of how irksome he is, while Deucalion's release made me wonder if Scott and Derek are indeed brain dead. He killed more people than Blake and Kali combined, but he's the one that gets a free pass? The man gave the most boring yet psychotic monologues in the history of Teen Wolf. Why do they think restoring his sight will somehow make him NOT nuts? That was terrible, terrible storytelling. Plus it makes the case that no matter how awful male villains are, they should live to try to redeem themselves, while female villains shouldn't have that chance. For the love of anti-misogyny, don't kill the females in 3B…..unless it's Cora. I'm fine with that.

8. Allison works best in junior hunter mode

This goes along with the no love triangles wish, but Allison is by far at her best when she is using her bow to kick monster butt. Since more monsters are heading to Beacon Hills now - thanks nematon - having her focus on her skills over her love life is far preferable. It also gives her a chance to work more with the person she has the best scenes with - her dad. Argent and Allison together make a great team but they have only skimmed the surface of this. Give her the role of matriarch of the family business but have her learning skills from the master. This expands Allison's character in two ways and keeps her more being the moron who can't make up her mind between Isaac and Scott. One leg of a love triangle makes no one look good. Personally, I would like to see an Allison that can truly take care of herself and others, a hero in her own right. In fact, have her start giving Lydia basic self-defense lessons since I don’t think screaming is always a viable defense, not even banshee shrieking.

7. Keep making the parents awesome and a vital part of the story

One of the biggest shocks for me about Teen Wolf, especially since it airs on MTV, is how multifaceted and non-stereotypical the parents are. They aren't there simply to give their teens grief. They have skills and resources that are important in helping their teens. It's a refreshing look at the teen-parent bond we don't get enough of these days. I love how each parent is unique and now that Sheriff Dad is on board and Argent is back in the hunting business, I cannot wait for them to contribute more to the story. I'd love to see them working together. Mostly I want them to keep developing as characters and to get meaningful scenes in their own right. Douche Dad's return gives us an excellent excuse to delve more into Mama McCall's past and to see how living with the supernatural is affecting her. His newfound knowledge should make Sheriff Dad and Stiles closer as well. I also would like to see the parents continue to be in on the action. One of my favorite scenes in 3A is when Mama uses the defibrillator on the Alpha Twins to rescue Scott. I would love to see Sheriff Dad take an active role in hunting monsters since he has the most resources outside of Argent. In fact, I hope 3B is when all the characters learn to work together more and less of this lone wolf stuff that has never actually worked for them. Kids and parents taking on the supernatural, no secrets, no hidden agendas - that's my kind of Teen Wolf.

6. Peter can stay

As much as I want Duke and Gerard to die, Peter is the most fascinating villain of the three and has a personal tie to almost all of the characters. Plus, he breathes snark. You cannot overvalue good snark. Ideally, Peter would continue his underground manipulating of the characters like chess pieces until the final season. Then I want him to reveal himself to be the real Big Bad of the show, showcasing exactly how he maneuvered them to get what he wants and exposing the slow burn calculation he's been using for years. For this to work, they have to give him the time and opportunity to do so. It is not yet time to pull the trigger on such a great personal villain. Let them continue to fight the minor ones but keep the audience clued in on exactly what Peter is doing to use every situation to his own benefit. Make him irreplaceable to Scott and Derek. Then have him betray them. For an epic hero story to work it has to have an equally great, seasons-long villain. For Teen Wolf, that should be Peter.

5. No more lessons

Listen writers, no matter how much you feel the need to improve the minds of America, your opportunity to be classified as an educational show is negated by a constant barrage of naked torso eye candy. Therefore, chuck it all and live out the glory of what this show really is - entertainment fluff at its best. That means no more word etymology, bad science, Literature 101, or SAT prep. We all know what ephemeral means thank you and no one cared how the word tattoo came about…in either language. Plus I am not sure you have a good enough grasp on what an idiom actually is to be teaching America's youth about it. If you want to sneak some gratuitous learning in every now and then - the fireflies were interesting the first time - go for it. Just stop using them as freaking anvils that crash into a story and leave a hole where the momentum used to be.

4. Villain overload actually hurts the story

I loved 3A, but it had far too many villains. 5 alphas and a druid serial killer sound great on paper, but when you've only got 12 episodes to tell their stories, even your supersonic pace can't cover it. Each of these villains , with some story tweaking of course, could have been their own season. The kanima story was richer because of its personal stakes and because we had time to unravel the mystery with the characters instead of being browbeaten with them. The connection we already had with Jackson made his descent into monster even more compelling and then to see that it was Gerard manipulating him at the end was a masterful twist. It was hard to care for any of these 3A villains because we were constantly rushing from one to another. When we did get background on them, it was in brief flashbacks that were designed to play on our sympathies but we knew too little of them to really care. Jennifer and Kali had such a rich background together that it seemed a shame to see only a glimpse and only at the very end.

3. Either kill the "Scott as true alpha" story or give Derek a spin-off

Besides Malcolm Merlyn coming back on Arrow, there is no other major plot movement I hated more in 2013 than Scott becoming a true alpha. It relegates him to the super special snowflake, Boy King position that inevitably makes me loathe the character and long for his downfall. The fact that he achieved it by the moral superiority of his soul makes me want to vomit. Trying to push a character as the true source of goodness and light, of innocence and wisdom, the very best of everyone, in short the very nature of a Mary Sue, is the number way to turn me off of them for good and I'm not the only one. There is no upside to this plot detour and Boy King roles are rarely successful, as Stephen on The Tomorrow People can attest. A much more interesting route would have been allowing Scott to gradually grow as a werewolf first and a leader second. It would showcase his transition from ordinary high school kid to someone extraordinary. I fail to see why both Scott and Derek could not be competent and work together instead of a melodramatic power shift. In fact, I fail to see why they have stopped utilizing Derek at all. This season his only purpose has been as physical and emotional punching bag. Frankly, he has taken Jackson's role without the awesome tail. Derek is too intriguing a character to back burn like this merely to make Scott look even more like the most awesomest awesome whoever awesomed. It's so frustrating that right now I wish Derek would get his own spin-off with writers who actually like the character. To me, Derek is the Angel of Teen Wolf. He's the adult on a mostly teen show, the supernatural being who doesn't quite fit in. By spinning Angel off of Buffy, they actually improved the character and made a grittier show. I think Derek could do the same thing. Send him off to a city that needs a hero. Let him be competent for once and grow as a leader himself. Surround him with interesting characters and watch this character shine. In fact, don't forget to send another criminally underused character on Teen Wolf to help….Lydia.

2. Screaming and sexual predator are not character arcs

If Derek is the Angel of Teen Wolf, then Lydia is the Cordy. For three seasons now, the writers have not seemed to know what to do with her. She had visions and helped raise the dead. She is now a banshee, but the core problem remains. For a presumably main character, Lydia is still often sidelined. Heck, they didn't even bother to tell her about alphas until after she was screwing one. Lydia is the smartest character on the show but she is rarely allowed to use her brains to help. She has a supernatural power, but it is reactive instead of proactive so far. Quite frankly, Holland Roden is one of the best actresses in the show and when they allow her to shine, she always does. They need a targeted strategy to actively incorporate Lydia as a key player in the action of 3B, not just the mythology of it. It does no good to be a banshee if she's still just the girl outside looking in.

1. Keep up the awesome work

For all of this list, the fact remains that Teen Wolf is consistently entertaining, gripping, and intense. From the first time I watched the pilot (2 years late), I was shocked by how good this show really is. It has the fastest pace of any show on TV and the characters are generally likeable, root-able, and fascinating. The writers do a great job of developing character through action while the actors let their body language sell their reactions. It's a show that doesn't need monologues to hit you in the heart, but knows how to throw a powerful punch when it needs to. The scene in Motel California with Stiles talking Scott out of self-immolation is a prime example. That is one of the best scenes I've seen on any TV show this year. All kudos to the cast and crew of Teen Wolf for creating a mix of action, suspense, drama, snark, and good old-fashioned storytelling that continues to exceed my expectations and leave me excited for the next installment. As such, I wait anxiously for Jan. 6.

  1. So what are your wishes for Teen Wolf 3B?

    ReplyDelete
  2. You hit all mine with your list. Well, I like the Scott true alpha thing, but not at the expense of Derek's character growth/arc.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Don't make the love triangle annoying. Or at the very least get Scott a love interest as well so that he's too preoccupied with someone else to care.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I am cautiously pessimistic about the true alpha thing because I can only remember one time when a Boy King story line ever worked for me. Mostly it is a cliched mess, like Tomorrow People. Can't wait to discuss the new episode with you though.

  5. I am staunchly anti-shipping so my preference would be to kill all the romance story lines. However, I agree that I would rather have Scott find a new love interest in the hopes that it will keep the brooding and longing to a minimum. Let the romance be mere scraps of time in the interest of the much larger story.

  6. For some sad reason, you think a character can't have a love life and do other things, this is your personal failing, and quite frankly don't agree. I don't want a triangle, but I don't need Allison or Scott to be chaste.

Derek just needs to go period. He hasnt done anything useful to the plot since since season 2, and his manpain thing has gotten old. Derek is merely a supplement to Scott's story. His ending at the end of 3a was actually good and he should have gone from there. He learned some life lessons, was reunited with a family member, was a bit more at peace. Deaton is more useful to Scott than Derek has ever been.

It's obvious you don't like Scott much, but that's not the show's fault. Scott has been growing as a leader since s1. Isaac wasn't drawn to him for no reason.

  7. I think that fan pressure tends to make shows overemphasize romance, pushing it to be the main source of drama and character interaction, which is very boring to me. I see that as a failing of TV writing not a personal failing for me, which by the way comes off as offensive. This sounds more like you dislike Derek than what I think of Scott. I actually have no problem with Scott as he was in season 2, but turning him into the most special kid on the block does annoy me. He had plenty of great story to work with so I don't see why they needed to go down this route. I agree that Scott has been growing into a werewolf leader but I would argue that the show has pushed this to an abnormal degree to the detriment of many characters, including Scott, Isaac, and Derek. I would also argue about Deaton, who has to be the least useful emissary in the history of emissaries. While we don't know how he was with Talia, he ignored Derek as Hale alpha and keeps important information from Scott and the rest of the group. Of all the people who need to be more forthcoming, Deaton is number 1 on my list followed by Argent. They have answers but never seem to want to share them. I do agree with you though that the end of 3A would have been a perfect time for Derek to leave for his own spin-off.

  8. I love Scott and Allison together. I've been a fan since season 1. I love how the writers are writing their storyline. And this Isaac thing is ridiculous and out of the blue. Just because the actors dated in real life, it doesn't mean we have to see the whole weird Allison/Isaac thing on the screen. Love triangles are TERRIBLE. And I'm sick of them. Every show has a love triangle. It's getting so annoying. I was hoping Teen Wolf would be the ONE show with any silly triangles. I just hope we'll still get Scott and Allison together in the end. They're my favorite pairing.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I agree that the Isaac thing is rushed and I too was hoping to avoid all love triangles this season, since they finally got rid of the Stiles-Lydia-Jackson one. I haven't seen a show with a love triangle yet that said triangle made the show better. They just tear fandoms apart and derail the story narrative online. Here's hoping the love triangle ends quickly before it morphs into other love geometrical shapes.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 10. I agree that the love triangle scenes are probably my least favorite scenes in Teen Wolf - that being said, the rest of the episode generally makes up for it.

    9. I didn't really notice that all the girl villains died until now. I didn't get the feeling that they were killing them off because they were women, but because they had killed or tried to kill THEIR people, so it doesn't really bother me. Although, according to this logic Peter (who died and came back), Gerard (who is dying) and Duke should also be dead. I would like more background on the characters themselves though (part of your point number 4) - it was very hard to relate to and feel sorry for the alpha pack. If we had more information, maybe that would have changed.

3 I don't like the whole rising to greatness by the purity of one's soul line too much - with all of the werewolves we have seen, I feel like there should be more "pure" people. That being said - basically all Scott is doing is becoming an alpha without stealing powers, so as long as he stays an alpha (not superpowered alpha), it doesn't bug me too much. (It did bug me when he crossed the ash line - I felt that was complete cannon breaking and I hope that they don't blame it on his transformation.) Also, he has taken on an alpha role within his group - him becoming an alpha is a good way to show the physical transformation. Him killing someone I don't think would have been in character (with the exception of a fair fight to save someone).

8,7,4,2, and 1 I agree with in general.

6 I like Peter, but he can come and/or go as long as the writing is good and it makes sense.

5 doesn't bug me. They are in school - trying to show some normalcy is good setting development.

  11. Hi Dahne,
from the number of your Teen Wolf Posts recently, I can see that you're practically chomping at the bit for 3B to start...as I am. I agree with pretty much everything you wrote, except for the boy king matter. That would work for me, if they could take their time with it...perhaps work up to it as the culmination of the series, in its final season. Hey, it worked for Smallville, didn't it? How many other fantasy shows manage a 10 season run?

I'm tired of the Scott hate. Both Scott and Derek can co-exist and have good storylines. Derek isn't leader material even the actor who plays said Derek is the worst alpha ever.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I agree with every point in this article, specially the Scott as true alpha, that is terrible lol

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree with the foundational worries based on other TV shows, but I'm not as concerned about those pitfalls here. So far, for me, they've played with standards tropes of both genre TV and horror very effectively. Showing competence with both playing by the rules and surprising their audience. So I'm not super worried if they want to love triangle up Isaac, Scott, and Allison, I don't think it will turn into TVD, where we will lose all the character and be left solely with will they won't they plots. I think they will do something worthwhile with it.

The same way I think Gerard and Deucalion are still here to serve a purpose. I think Deucalion won't survive the season. They had two big bads at the beginning and one died mid season and the other will go in the second half. I think the female villains have been less awesome than the guys with simpler motivations. The same way Gerard w/Jackson was much better than the "I almost drowned once" dude was. I love Gerard, and I love Peter. Keep 'em both. And kill the lame ones. Kate wasn't redeemable, and had nothing going for her other than being a character you desperately wanted to see die--pure antagonism. Peter was conflicted-y, pushed and crazy. And he is a snarky joy and a much better alpha antagonist to Scott than Derek--which I don't want to see happen. Keep Derek.

For me a better request would be to write better female villains if for some reason we need to keep a tally. Which I really don't think we need to do. Writing with quotas is an arbitrary constraint that impairs storytelling.

I find Allison the Hunter to be annoying oftentimes. If she wants to shoot from a far as back up fine, but when they try to make her physically imposing, it falls flat. She has no physical presence or muscle tone to speak of, her flipping guys is just absurd. Plus, I really hate when she goes into no-nothing, I'm right mode. I love her interactions with her father, but I was happier this season when they demoted her for better storylines.

The show hit the reactive vs proactive issue right on the head, and I have faith that they are going to keep moving Lydia into a position to be more effectual, but they can't make her too proactive or she'll just turn into a plot device.

  15. my wish list:
    1. keep up the Scott-Stiles friendship
    2. more badass Allison (i actually like it when she went berserk in season 2 O.o)
    3. Peterrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

    ugh love triangle.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Unfortunately, according to the sneak peek we got before the season ended...I think your battle for #10 is already lost. I look at it like I do computer workings in the movies. I just must suffer in silence. :-D

I agree with most of your list. I agree completely with the 'getting rid of Deucalion and Gerad. My feeling toward season arc villains is simple. Tell the story. Finish the story and get rid of the character. They both should be dead and/or gone. Period. Contorting the story to keep these characters on the canvas not only dilutes the character's effectiveness but damages the trust of the audience. (Vampire Diaries and X-Files both did this to me and I was never able to really enjoy either show as much as I had when it started.)

As for the 'killing of the females' I don't think the problem is that the female villains are killed off. The problem is that Deucalion and Gerad were NOT killed off. As villains these characters got the 'right ending' but the fact that Deucalion and Gerad didn't throws the balance off. Take a page from Once Upon a Time and ship them off the canvas during the first 2 minutes of the return ep. (I must confess that I have difficulty being objective about Kalli. Those damned toenails irritated me so much that they kicked me out of the story every time the camera showed she was barefoot. No one on the hospital staff noticed the barefoot nurse!? WoooSaa.)

But I have to disagree with you about the lessons. I loved them. There weren't too many for my taste. I loved the science teacher dude (though I suppose he never actually taught anything, he just merrily snarked up the scene. I miss him. (was extremely annoyed at his death) I was pleased that after Scott's declaration in S0301 that he was committing to the educational side of his life I was happy that they didn't just drop that thread as most shows do.

I think the biggest thing I want for Season 3B is for them NOT to drop all the juicy character groundwork they laid in the first part of the season. Derek learning to be a good alpha. (which I think means I agree with the anti-'Scott is super alpha' opinion) Yes, we've seen from the beginning of the show that Scott is a hero. He has the natural qualities to be a leader but that's simple not as interesting to me as Derek trying to be better (and occasionally blowing it). I want Lydia to follow through on her determination to take her gift as a Banshee and use it TO PREVENT DEATHS.

I'm a Grimm fan and one of the things I've had fun with this season is the way that Nick, Monroe, Rosalee, Hank and Juliette have become a Scooby Gang. I think that might be fun here. We're getting a hellmouth…I think it woold be fun to watch them *grow into* a Scooby Gang. When I say grow into I mean I think the growing pains would make for some interesting stories. I don't want them to be perfect at handling every monster coming to town in two weeks.

  17. I agree with you, especially about the 'true alpha' line that I just don't buy and personally hate enormously, as well as how they are treating Derek's character. To be truthful, Derek was my favorite character on the show, still is, but they have changed him from a strong protector into a generic punching bag and half of that is trying to protect Scott and the other teens, Scott's friends. Meanwhile, Scott, the 'true alpha', mainly whines and complains about how awful his life is now or how he misses Allison but I guess that's what is expected from a teenage show. I haven't seen anything that really makes him a so-called true alpha other than being a teenager and refusing to kill on command. Big deal. Not everyone does. I also don't like, (aka: hate) that they broke their own canon by allowing that supposed fact to allow him to break through the mountain ash ring. So now I guess he's also a super "true" alpha.
Deaton may be an emissary but he's not a emissary to the Hale pack because he only helps Derek if he needs Derek to help Scott in someway. He has never just helped Derek for Derek's sake. I doubt Talia would have approved.
I really hope there is more story than Allison's love life this time around. I'd rather know about the twins, Danny, Lydia or anyone other than the love triangle they are setting up. Had my fill of Scott and Allison pining for each the past couple of season as well as Scott doing anything to save/have Allison. But once again I doubt I'll get my wish on this since they seem to be the most important part of the show according to the writers.
I wish for more Derek, Stiles, Danny, Lydia, Twins, and parents (because I love the way they are written). I also like Peter, even though he's not to be trusted at all. But Cora can stay with relatives.

I agree. The main character of the show is scott. Scott becoming an alpha was needed. He always had is own pack in a sense. Isaac has pretty much been part of his pack since midway season 3a. I think derek will come back and join scott's pack and give scott advice good or bad.

  19. Thanks for the reply! Yes, I absolutely hate love triangles. These days, all shows have them. And that has become so repetitive. I tend to stay away from shows which have main lead triangles that create fan fights and arguments and such. I don't want for Teen Wolf to turn into a soap opera. I just wish the show would go back to Scott/Allison being together and the whole gang dealing with problems and issues as a group unit. It's just icky to imagine Isaac/Allison together. It was rushed/forced and out of the blue. And I don't like the idea of them at all.

  20. I want three things:
    - no more stupid "oh yeah we are fighting in slow motion' moments
    - mushroom twins dead
    - no messy plot, that needs to be explained over and over again

    ReplyDelete
  21. Isn't the new character (Kira) supposed to be a new love interest for Scott? ( I think i've read that in some spoilers)

    ReplyDelete
  22. As adults, I think we forget that this is a show about teens in high school dealing with the supernatural. Teens date & have love triangles. Teenage girls & boys loose focus when it comes to boys/girls so #1 & #8 I disagree. If Allison focus on hunting & become this mature hunter than her character will be useless & very unbelievable. Her character has had people twist her mind since season 1. Basically I'm saying she shouldn't overnight be this mature Wolf hunter/fighter all of a sudden. I don't mind the love triangle. In fact, I want to see how mature Scott & Isaac handle the whole friendship after it...

I do want to see Lydia & Stiles have their moments... Stiles crush with Lydia is true teenage, high school typical thing. I like that storyline but I do want to see Stiles with a girl. Lydia or not. He always get the raw end of things...

I would like to see Lydia do more than scream. I'm hoping she could do more than scream after finding death. Show her developing her super natural powers (if there is more) plus keep her as her smart witty self. Lydia is the smartest & most impressive of them all. I like Holland Roden & thinks she's an great actress with potential.

The storyline of Scott & his family I would like to see more of... will Scott dad be sticking around for 3B? If so, how would that impact the parents? Finding out what they know.

I agree with Peter staying, riding his character out to the end of the show... His snark & plus he's a good looking villain. I want to see how he regains his strength after returning from the dead. So far he's been relaxing at Derek's loft taking it easy. I want to see more Peter in the battle or doing more than sitting around.

I also agree with Derek... I truly like Derek character & want him to stay on Teen Wolf, but I'm not against a spin off with him & Lydia... to me the writers did not do a good job of bringing in new characters that does not overpower the main characters. Bring in more of Derek's family like his mom back from the dead. It does seem to be that Derek's family is the main werewolf family in the area. There's history there that I would like to see explored with these new villains arriving in Beacon Hills.

There's so much I would like to see in this show I can't name them all. Just keep it coming. I can wait for Monday (work :() , but I'm anxious for Monday 10 PM

    ReplyDelete
  23. agree on all points. Yes a Derek spin off would be better for the character.

  24. That's what it looked like in the trailer.

  25. Was reading some of the other comments and rewatching 3A. I'd like to add a couple of things to my wish list. This one may be a repeat of what Dahne said, but I'm hoping they find a little more balance between the character stories and the action story. In the past they laid groundwork for some really interesting character stories. But rushed or skimmed them too quickly. Jackson's need to find his own identity was one. It went from potential story to something simply stated by other characters as the Kanima ran around killing people. So, I wish for stories they can take the time to tell fully.

My other wish is for characters who are supposed to be Issac's "friends" to stop mimicking the abuse he suffered from his father in order to get him to listen. And yeah, this primarily applies to Derek. Since the character was introduced, whenever Derek needed to make Derek listen to him he forced him into submission. Not cool, man.

  26. Yes, the love triangle thing is a losing battle. My biggest hope right now is that it ends quickly and doen't cause too much of a mess or get me to dislike the characters. I totally agree about one season villains. Not sure the Mayor would have been a good villain on Buffy if he kept coming back. Some villains just don't require the extra screentime and Gerard and Duke definitely fit in that category. I also agree that killing the ladies wasn't near as much of the problem as not killing the men too. I too rooted for killing Kali immediately. Barefoot in a hospital! Could you get any nastier.

Don't get me wrong. I loved Mean Science Teacher; he was snarky fun. Coach is one of my favorite characters. However, I hate when they use lessons as anvils. The telluric currents and even the first mention of fireflies were intersting and somewhat relevant to the plot. However, blantantly hitting me over the head with the theme (tattoo), incorrect examples (idiom), SAT prep (ephemeral), and inserts that are completely inscrutable (what was the point of Derek explaining the McCarthyism allegory in The Crucible again?) drive me insane. It's like they hold up a sign in the middle of the narrative/action to say, "We now break for your weekly dose of education. The plot will resume in 30 seconds." I'm starting to refer to them as Schoolhouse Rock moments, but they rarely rock.

I too would like the pack to start working more as a team and for the idea of pack to branch out into the non-wolf group. That is my biggest fear with super special Scott. It tends to be that when people play with this trope, every single thing revolves around the Boy King and other characters start becoming out of character or spend most of their time extolling the King's virtues. That's sloppy writing, highly annoying, and boring. Grimm has done it right but in part because Nick needs the others to effectively do his job. When the Boy King becomes the Mary Sue and is always right and always noble and has all the most awesome skills in everything, I start rooting for that character to die, but they never do. The interaction, the team is what makes Teen Wolf different from other teen shows, well and the constant action and relatively small amount of emoangsting. That's what I tune in for.

  27. From the interviews and spoilers, yes, she very much is. So look for a love quadrilateral since triangles are so 5 years ago.

  28. My problem with this is that Derek is not leader material simply because they wanted to push Scott as alpha way, way too early in the story in my opinion. Basically they had to make Derek look incompetent in order to raise Scott higher. I agree that both Derek and Scott could co-exist, but it seems that the writers disagree. They cannot make them both competent and that is a major story problem. You cannot lift up one character at the expense of another. It's just bad storytelling and makes it hard to root for either.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Scott is the main character but it does not follow that he needed to become an alpha already. One of the joys of Teen Wolf early on was watching Scott try to adjust to his new supernatural world, learning the ropes and how to balance it with his everyday teen life. Now instead of pursuing that storyline and watching as Scott learned how to be more competent as a werewolf, we jump straight into a super special snowflake role, of which they never took the time to develop nor did they need. Scott is currently breaking canon they set up in order to prove how uniquely awesome he is. That's a dangerous road to go down and has sunk many a genre show before. Scott didn't need to become a morally superior, true alpha to be the main character. He already was. They needed to develop his role as a leader more slowly instead of Isaac's quick jump to Team Scott from the premiere of season 3 and setting him up to have his new role backfire big time in the fandom. People don't like Mary Sue's and that's exactly what it looks like Scott is becoming.

  30. Killing off the women didn't bother me in the first two seasons to be honest, but killing both Jennifer and Kali while leaving Deucalion alive set a very bad taste in my mouth. He was responsible for more death than the other 2 combined. It smacked of double standard that would be rectified by killing off Duke and Gerard. I agree that we didn't get enough background on any of the villains and when we did it was rushed. That made it harder to care about them than the kanima situation. They should stick to one main villain and build that person up. Hero stories are only as good as their villains.

I agree that Scott could not have purposely killed someone. That would have been out of character and would make Scott way too unsympathetic for what is, at the end of the day, still a teen show. I completely expected him to become an alpha maybe in season 5 or 6 (the last season) in the heat of a fight. Something like they were fighting, he tried to save the person at the last moment, but the person fell off the cliff anyway. The idea that Scott is so morally superior to everyone else that he becomes the true alpha, something so rare as to be shocking, is appalling and makes his character less likeable to be honest. They had already started going in the "Scott can do no wrong, he is always right" direction at the end of last season, and they have had at least one character excusing any poor choices he makes as him doing his best and therefore right-adjacent. They have made him the favored of everyone. They have given him special powers no one else has (that ash thing bugs me more than anything else this season because it is completely canon-breaking and we both know that's a slippery slope). He's 2 special skills and a love martyrdom away from being "the greatest teen whoever lived" and savior of us all. There is just no way to spin a character like that as interesting.

I guess it really comes down to person opinion. In scott's mind he's had his own pack since season two. His pack is compromised of his friends. Also with derek giving up his alpha status to save his sister, someone needed to step up and i think thats where scott is gonna come in.

  32. I am trying to do a Teen Wolf post a day up to the 3B premiere. Yes, I am quite excited for it. For a show I dismissed for 2 years because it was on MTV, it has become one of the most enjoyable shows I watch. A real treasure. I can't wait to see what they do to us next. The promos look awesome. My biggest problem with the Boy King plot, besides that it rarely ever works, is they are already breaking canon in order to make Scott even more special. That automatically causes a crisis of faith for me because I've been burned by that far too many times in other genre shows. Looking at you, Supernatural. I do agree that if they had taken their time building up the plot it would have been better. However they rushed us right into this plot at the expense of the characters and the canon. That is a disastrous step, one I hope they remedy immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It was unnecessary and has more cons than pros, so I have no idea why they raced in this direction.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I am more disappointed that they felt the need to go in the love triangle direction at all. It's way too overdone in a show that never felt the need to be typical. If it stays in the background as something barely mentioned, then I will jsut eye roll those brief moments and forget about them. If it becomes a distinct plot point taking away from the action of the story, then it will be a rant theme in my recaps.

I am not sure what more purpose Deucalion can serve in the story. Is he going to stick around Beacon Hills and become Scott's friend? The guy is insane and getting his eyesight back doesn't change that. The only purpose I can see is if he goes after Gerard in revenge and the last thing I want to see is Scott and crew working hard to protect Gerard, who is even worse than Duke. For my the ideal would be that they both kill each other in the 3B premiere and be done with them. Gerard's sole purpose this season so far is to moustache twirl, give mostly bad information, and be a douche. If they have Deaton actually do his job as an emissary for once, then they don't need Gerard on the info end either. I see him more there to be an emotional issue for the Argents, but they don't seem to like him much either, I doubt he'd be missed, I guess I don't see Kate as any worse than Duke or Gerard, none of which are redeemable, so it baffles me how they choose who lives and who dies. I agree we don't need a quota and usually this kind of thing doesn't bother me. However it has gotten so blatantly uneven right now that it is like itch in my brain and so easy to solve,

I agree that Allison is not physically imposing and she doesn't need to be. However, her dad is not imposing either when compared to full out werewolves and he still manages to be a credible threat. I want to see them training Allison to use her brain in the way he does. He catches werewolves because he has better toys and he outthinks them. I want to see that as part of Allison's character growth. I had no problem with her being pretty much sidelined this season, but she has great potential. I hate when she goes into the whole "I am superior" monoluging too. It's lame and far beneath her. When she fights solo, it is almost always a huge mistake. That bank vault thing had me wanting to smack her. I want her instead to rise up to the matriarchal head of the Argents that her family tradition demands. I want her to learn strategy and planning from her dad and to give the werewolves better choices, because typically their plans suck. In short, I want her to become the brains of a well-oiled operation that slowly learns how to work together for the good of Beacon Hills. If they can turn her from a plot device into a full-fledged character with an active role in the mytharc, she will be something to watch. If she is a "my way or the highway" leader or they try to turn her into a physical presence without also getting some kind of superpowers, then yes, it will be a huge mistake.

Lydia is currently a plot device so I think they can only go up with her, I am not sure what powers a banshee can have but screaming hopefully is not the full extent of it. I think using her brains would be a great switch up as well. I remember when I speed marathoned the first season, how impressed I was that Teen Wolf didn't make Lydia and Jackson stereotypical popular kids. Lydia being smart was a great joy and I was glad when they stopped having her hide it. I would love to see them work more with this and make it an actual part of the team's skills arsenal.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Scott and Stiles interaction is the core of the show for me and most of the best scenes are based around them. I agree that it needs to remain a focus of Teen Wolf. That scene in Motel California was the epitome of their friendship for me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I see more redeeming qualities in Scott than you do. :-) For a teen genre show, none of the characters whine near as much as I expected they would, which I appreciate since emoangsting is my least favorite way to spend valuable episode minutes. However, I do think that pushing Scott as an alpha to the deteriment of character building is a huge mistake. I also beleive that Derek has been this year's punching bag, a role Jackson held before him. It makes no sense why anyone has to be the continued whipping boy in the show and I hope that 3B rectifies this. I am not interested in watching one character continually get beat up, no matter who it is. It's not entertaining nor is it plausible. I also am over the Scott and Allison relationship, but mostly because they grind the story to a halt. If it were written better and more in the background, it would be more palatable to me.

I do absolutely hate that they broke thier own canon to pander to Scott's emerging super special talents though. It's a sticking point for me and something they need to cancel immediately. If he is super special among alphas for reasons beyond his morally superior soul, which is already sickening enough, then he is no longer an actual flesh and blood character, but a cardboard hero who will get less interesting the more they try to push him. Deaton is another big problem for me too. He is just terrible as an emissary. Did he even try to help Derek at all when he became an alpha? It is such a lopsided turn of events that it feels like Deaton being an emissary was tacked on to this season, like they had no intention of going there from the pilot and therefore leaves all kinds of loose ends that haven't been reconciled. Deaton has been a wash of a character this season and most of it has to do with his lame excuse of wanting to pretend the supernatural away. Really? That's a great reason not to share valuable information with the rest of the team. Not like anyone was getting killed or anything. What the heck? The have completely ruined Deaton's character, especially since they established that he was supposed to be helping Derek the entire time, but he's been all Scott all the time. Not cool.

I would like to see Teen Wolf explore some of its other characters as well, sicne right now they are more interesting. Actually, they really do need a spin-off. They have too many characters to do all of them justice and I don't need them to be killing teens off. (The parents must NOT DIE EVER.) That's the only way to give each character the exploration they deserve and it might actually help the fandom. Teen Wolf can explore more of the teen angst elements of growing up, including all the love triangle nonsense they wish, while the spin-off can be more action driven and kicking monster butt. The show has the ratings to justify a spin-off. I hope they make it happen. Oh and yes, Cora needs to stay long gone.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ha! 3A did have an overabundance of monolguing and exposition. I too hope they make things more simple in plot but richer in character. I don't care one jot either way about the Alpha Twins myself, but sadly for you, I think they are there to stay. After all, they have to take their shirts off at least once every 3 episodes, so Teen Wolf would dramatically reduce their naked torso ratio if they were to leave and making that abs quota is probably a stipulation for the show's renewal.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The more I think abotu it, the more I want a spin-off. It would be an exciting way to take the less utilized characters and bring them to the forefront, while still providing a rich environment for the ones that stay. It's getting about time for these guys to graduate right? When we started in season one, they were sophomores. Season 3A was another school year. Perhaps when they graduate from high school, just like Buffy. Or sooner. Just let's get a spin-off.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The person who really needs to die is Gerard. For any of the other villains (male or female), you can make the case that they were drawn into a cycle of hate and revenge by Gerard's dastardly deeds and thus they all equally deserved a shot at redemption, if any of them did. I can understand that they kept Gerard around for one more season, just to establish that he truly ist the vilest of the vile. However, I had been hoping that they would dispose of him in some truly painful way before the end of 3A. Flaying him (as Willow did with whatshisname on Buffy) would have been nice...

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't disagree. I don't think there is much room for Deucalion--I think they just couldn't kill both of them off at once. It would have felt like a high school short story "and everybody died. the end." So I hope they have one last twist with him leading to the new bads and then he'll be gone. Maybe show Scott some secret Alpha info or push the vet to start giving up some info. I don't know, but he should have one more card to play before he goes to the big pet cemetery in the sky.

Haha, I much prefer Lydia and think she has vastly more potential than Alison--even if they do make her train more. Alison's too young and inexperienced and silly to be a leader. She is petty and emotion-ruled and has shown to have real trouble listening to good sense and/or the whole story--none of which are good things when you have the power of life and death at your disposal. I want to like the Argents more and I miss Momma Argent--so sad she died in such a silly way. Right now, Daddy Argent is the best with Gerard and Alison being barely tolerable. I guess that's why I don't mind them using Alison as a love interest--let her be girlie. It's the same as making Lydia smart: a nice twist. Unlike Alison, I think Lydia has real potential to be part of the mytharc and is already on her way to being a full fledged, yet slightly independent character. I like her isolation and yet dependence, it gives more dimension to the ensemble cast. She's smart and snarky. I dunno, different preferences I guess. If I had to vote one to student office, I'm going with Lydia. She'd show up with an agenda and a no-nonsense attitude. It would be very well run. Alison's leadership style would be to hem and haw and try to make friends and eventually the nerds of the group would have to do everything if anyone had a hope of getting something accomplished.

  41. How about a spin-off based on the Hale family, as a whole? Then, they could even let Cora live. Peter would, of course, be the black sheep he has always been ;)

  42. Love polygons are the new way to go. In supernatural shows, where we have to deal with beings from other dimensions, we might even have to graduate to love polyhedra or to directed graphs...

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with most of your points, but all I really want is more Stiles and Lydia! -- The two best characters (and actors) in my opinion

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree that Gerard is the most vile villain the show has. However, in my 6th rewatch I noticed something. According to Gerard, Deucalion bite Alex Argent in the 70's long before the events in Visionary took place. Now Gerard is of course the most unreliable narrator of them all so he could have been manipulating things for his own purposes. In fact, that is my take on it. Still it does leave open a possible spinning of what Gerard did in Visionary, and his particular targeting of Duecalion, as revenge for a family member. Just something to think about in these last couple of days. Still, Gerard more than anyone, even Cora, needs to go.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oooh, I like the idea of Peter killing Duke and becoming an alpha again. I wonder if it is like Highlander and you get all the power of the kills that alpha made. That would make Peter a very powerful player. Hmm.

Actually, I much prefer Lydia also. She has a better set up to be a lasting character for me in that she can play many different roles. She's also not saddled with the extra sappiness that Allison is. Ideally, they will both come into their own as the season progresses.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't want Allison to become super huntress overnight either, but I think that ship sailed in season 2 when they did do that. I want her to steadily progress in her leadership skills though and practice hearing all sides and options before just jumping in on her own and being obnoxious. She has a powerful role to play in her larger family and the hunting community and I wouldlike to see them focus on that. Whether or not teens do have romantic entanglements that take up all their focus, it is laregly uninteresting as a drama point and these teens have to face a lot more than your average high schooler does. They can have their relationships but that doesn't mean they have to be part of the narrative. Leave it in teh background and go forth. On the same note, I don't particularly want a Stiles relationship in the forefront either. However I absolutely agree that they need more Lydia and Stiles scenes, largely because I think they are the best younger actors the show has. When the two are on screen, it automatically lifts the intensity. It helps that their characters are engaging as well. My biggest hope is on Lydia in 3B.

Scott's dad is definitely sticking around for awhile in 3 B so I too think that will bring up some intersting character dynamics, especially with Scott, Sheriff, and Mama McCall. I really hope that he does NOT learn Scott's werewolf status and that they find increasingly intricate ways to work around him. Basically I hope that he can bring the team together in a common goal. It wouldn't hurt if he weren't quite the douche either. As for Peter, I want to see what he's doing when he's not in Derek's loft. He has been manueveringthings all over the place and I want to see if that includes making alliances with others or some kind of information gathering. He certainly always knows more than he lets on.

I like the idea of more flashbacks to Derek's life growing up. I really want to know why he knows so little when he grew up surrounded by werewolves and more about Talia. It would be good to see a competent Deaton as well and hopefully that was the case in the past. Since no one actually seems to have really died in the Hale fire, who knows how many other family members might crawl out of the wood work in the future. However, I would like a spin-off to not be overwhelmed by Hales, mostly because the point is to keep Derek from being underutilized and badly written.

I have not seen Reign yet, but I hear that she is a shining star in that one. My trouble is not with the actress but how Cora is written. There is not one reason why she was on this season. She didn't do anything but rush into trouble and get hurt a lot, mostly because of the first. My concern is mostly with Reign's ratings to be honest. It has to better than Tomorrow People to come back and I really, really do NOT want Cora back for season 4.

I also have the Monday conundrum. It's the first day kids are back at school, so that is always a challenging work day, but I have Teen Wolf to comfort me in my exhaustion that night. In the end, more Teen Wolf is always a bright shiny spot on the usually dreary Mondays.

  47. When Derek threw that glass at Isaac, I wanted to reach into the TV and Gibbs smack him something fierce. It was uncalled for and a complete reversal of the Derek they had been building up in the season thus far. What a complete 180 back to Douche Derek. I know they needed to give Isaac another reason to choose Scott over Derek to complete their Boy King mission, but what a way to kill a character to do it. gah!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree, especially on the Lydia front. Stiles gets ample time as it is and I enjoy his character a lot. Lydia gets shafted big time and as thus has the best potential for character growth. Here's hoping they live up to that potential this season.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I am very good with a Hale family spin-off. Not so good with an Originals or Dallas comparison though. There's enough soapy genre shows on TV right now. We are missing a family friendly genre show though and a family action show would be great. I think they have the perfect characters for it, the only problem is that they would have to use the Derek and Peter of the flashbacks to really sell it or not have the show on for very long. If the Hale fire was at least 9 years ago, that's not a whole lot of time to play with adult Derek. I don't want to lose Tyler Hoechlin. I also think that trying to reconcile both an earlier storywith a current story could get tricky canon-wise.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I saw Tyler Posey on a talk show explaining his tattoo. It left me with the impression that the show had to decide what was the lesser of two evils. Paying for all the make-up to cover his new tatoo come up with some way to write it in. LOL.

I forgot about "ephemeral" that was a little forced. An example of a less that worked for me was the vocabulary on the bus.

Your statement about the 'Boy King' solidified why I think making it an A story it would break the show. What we dealt with in seasons 1 & 2 is a kid who fought the battles he fought because it was, in a way, his only option. And generally, it made his life harder. If they go the way of the Boy King then it has the potential to alter why he makes the choices he does.

But I gotta say I'm not particularly worried about it. The introduction of the 'dark stain' (can't remember the exact phrase they used in the show) implies that the pure soul leap frog to magic alpha is gone.

    ReplyDelete
  51. hmm. Because of the scenes between Isaac and Scott at the end of season two (when Isaac went to Scott for advice then decided to stay) it never occurred to me that the purpose was to get Isaac to choose Scott. I took that scene at face value...that Derek was trying to protect Isaac. humm

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was just kidding about the soap potential. I hate soaps. I'm not too sure about the family friendliness, though. I wouldn't want the show to get too cute. It would have to be at least a little dark for it to hold onto at least some adults in the audience. Earlier, you used Buffy and Angel as a comparison. I thought Angel was a much darker show than Buffy. Nonetheless, I think there could be a way to make a spinoff work that features both Peter and Derek.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Don't you absorb all the power of the alpha (or any werewolf) you kill? Duke was supposed to be so powerful because he killed other alphas and absorbed their strength--I think.

I will share your hope that they come into their own as strong independent women who kick butt.

    ReplyDelete
  54. This show wouldnt be half as good without Derek imo.

And I would definitely lose half of my interest in Teen Wolf without Derek/Tyler H.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree with all of your points -- especially #10, #9, and #6.

#10 - I don't mind love triangles if they actually serve a purpose for character development. But every review I have read for this season and predictions for the upcoming season are pretty blunt about the fact that Isaac and Kira are simply used to provide some tension for the "endgame" couple of Allison and Scott. There's A LOT more character development that can come from a steady couple instead of all of these "tense" moments. Not to mention that the actor who portrays Isaac has even mentioned they won't last long (ahem, she stabbed him 20 times.) and they're thinking of a spinoff with Kira. Just a waste of plot.

#9 - Jennifer was the best villain that's been on this show aside from Peter and definitely had the potential for redemption or to be a final big bad. Not to mention she was more powerful than the other villains yet still got killed off?

#6 - Peter is actually one of my favorite characters so I would like to see him interact with the other characters more. Even the scene he had with Lydia at the end of 3A was priceless. "You." "Me." I also enjoy him because like Jennifer he isn't very obviously BAD. Whereas Gerard had no redeeming qualities. I prefer villains that aren't just pure evil.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Actually, I wasn't thinking of the whole family...i.e., at least not if you're thinking of Derek's mother and others that perished in the fire. I could, in fact, picture something along the lines of Angel...with Derek setting up shop as a detective (or something like that) somewhere and Peter one day showing up at his doorstep, needing a place to hide because he had badly pissed off some powerful being somewhere. Cora could then take over Cordelia's part

    ReplyDelete
  57. I see. I would prefer that Lydia take Cordelia's part since I think they are more similiar and I like Lydia more than Cora. :-) I see them killing off Peter before a spin-off, even though I want him to stay. I do think he's a better adversary for Derek than Scott so if he showed up as long standing villain on a spin-off I would welcome that. Love the idea of more Thalia in flash backs though.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Contrived drama for drama's sake is always a problem for me and since that's basically what the love triangle is, it tends to annoy me far more than add to any story/character development. The only redeeming thing for me in the spoilers is exactly that it will be so short lived. I hope we move past it quickly and create an actual character arc for Allison, who I feel will be more shafted by the love triangle than Scott. It is indeed a waste of time and plot.

I agree that Jennifer was far superior to all but Peter this season. Partly because she was also pretty smart, which is important to me, and she had a credible motive. I disliked how they never seemed to know how powerful she was though, since it soon became a plot device. Going from her awesome power in The Girl Who Knew Too Much to the limited power of The Overlooked and then back to awesome power in Lunar Ellipse made no sense to me. Still, I like strong, smart, snarky villains who have good back story and Blake fulfilled that better than any of the alphas. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that genre hero shows have equally engrossing villains. I wish they had told Darach's story a bit better and given that the A story instead of relegating it behind the alphas for much of the season.

Peter's "I'm back" scenes with Melissa and Lydia, his snarking with Stiles in 3.02, and being 'roided up and fighting SuperWolf with Scott are some of my favorite scenes in 3A. I heartily concur that he needs more screen time with more characters. What I love about Peter is that he always brings the snark and Ian Bohen seems to raise the acting performance of everyone he's on screen with. I particularly love Stiles and him trading barbs. My biggest fear for 3B is they are going to rush his story and kill him off again.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree that a darker Teen Wolf spin-off would be the way to go. That's why I think it wpuld be hard to make it a prequel with thewhole family. Unless Derek and Peter were not going to be the leads. Then it could do almost anything.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It could very well be that I am reading more into that scene because it is definitely about Derek's warped way of trying to save Isaac. However it gave the show the pinnacle they needed to keep Isaac from looking like a complete jerk in choosing Scott over Derek. It felt forced again as did much fo the true alpha junk this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I am unclear as to whether you absorb the power of any werewolf or if it has to be one in which you have a special pack connection. If you could kill any werewolf to absorb its power, then I am not sure why more wolves aren't killing other rival packs. Mostly though I don't want it to become a Highlander rip-off.
