A weekly feature in which we're trying to find most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently.
COMMUNITY, "Introduction to Teaching", January 2, 2014, Actors: Danny Pudi, Kevin Corrigan and more
The Scene: Abed's meltdown at the Nicolas Cage class
Pablozky21: The one hour season premiere of Community offered a bunch of great scenes that assures us that we are in the right direction for a great season, so it's hard to pick, but my favorite is Abed's meltdown at the Nicolas Cage class; we've never seen Abed so out of control, or at least not like this. My favorite part? "I'm a sexy cat". Community is back!
ELEMENTARY, "The Diabolical Kind", January 2, 2014, Actors: Natalie Dormer, Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu
The Scenes: Sherlock and Moriarty talk at the end & Watson and Moriarty talk
Justyna Kubica: I have to admit, I wasn't so happy about the last season's twist that Irene Adler is Jamie Moriarty. But I think this episode was a great way to show me how well this storyline can actually work. And one of the main things that make it so good is Natalie Dormer and her interactions with Jonny Lee Miller. They have one of the best dynamics not just on this show, but among all the shows I watch. I find Moriarty an exceptionally interesting character. Normally I wouldn't even consider rooting for someone with a history like her but in the moments like this I find myself hoping for her redemption. For people who say they don't understand love, both Jamie and Sherlock are willing to do quite a lot in its name. I was very much surprised to learn that Moriarty has a daughter, maybe even more to see how much she actually cares about her child. She risked a lot to save this little girl. And I really enjoyed the moment when Sherlock finds her covered in her own blood and surrounded by the bodies of the kidnappers and they talk about a change in her choices, the effect they have on each other. It's a sad, but quite intriguing moment which left me wondering about the future of these characters. And both the actors made such a great impression on me here that I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. What an intense and brilliant scene.
Virginia Fontana: The scene when Joan and Moriarty are alone and they have a little chat. Here we have two entirely oppositional characters with one big common interest: Sherlock Holmes. Moriarty's somewhat condescending fascination with Watson was taken down a few pegs when she learned that it was Holmes who chose to partner with Watson (rather than the other way around, as she assumed). I loved it when Joan said, "that bothers you." A tense and intriguing exchange!
A Dahne: Watson vs. Moriarty in a game of wits - Loved these two actors playing off of each other. It was tense and intriguing. I really hope Moriarty comes back. Also picked by Sharon Seymour
SHERLOCK, "The Empty Hearse", January 1, 2013, Actors: Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch and more, The Scenes: Watson finds out Sherlock's alive & Mrs. Hudson learns about John's new love
Justyna Kubica: First of all, I really loved the entire episode. There were so many great scenes that I could name here, like: the fall theories, Sherlock and Mary saving John, Mrs. Hudson's (hilarious) reaction to John moving on, the reunions and more. But my favorite is definitely the part where Watson finds out about Sherlock being alive. The entire sequence, from the moment Holmes enters the restaurant and prepares his disguise right until the two part ways when John gets into the cab with Mary, was absolutely brilliant. Watson's reaction was pretty much exactly what I wanted, it felt real, very emotional and all three attacks on Sherlock made me laugh so hard. Love these two! I can't believe Holmes hasn't even considered the possibility he won't be welcome. Then again, John's the one who always makes him realize these sort of things (like when he should apologize people for his behavior), so I guess that only shows how much Sherlock needs and missed his best friend. Another reason why I loved this scene is Martin Freeman. Really powerful performance, he was excellent not just in this moment, but in the entire episode. Also, this part is a great introduction for Mary, who made a good impression on me, almost immediately. To sum up, amazing actors, meaningful character moments, dialogues, direction and music in this scene. Kudos!
Diana Mack: Sherlock was such a beautiful episode and there were many parts I adored. I'll pick up this one: Mrs Hudson is happy that Watson moved on with his life since 'his boyfriend' died, then the doctor replies "Sherlock wasn't my boyfriend! Listen to me, I'm not gay!" best part.
THE BIG BANG THEORY, "The Hesitation Ramification", January 2, 2013, Actors: Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, The Scenes: Penny's proposal & Leonard tells Sheldon about Penny's proposal
Diana Mack: Down on her kneels, Penny asks Leonard to marry him. Plot twist, he isn't sure about the answer.
Pablozky21: It was a very emotionally affecting scene, especially considering that Sheldon kept a very empathic attitude with him (for most part of the scene any way) and it's even more deep when Leonard honestly says that he doesn't know why he didn't say yes and how he fears his relationship might be over. It's a very well crafted scene that hits the emotional beats just right. Also picked by Babar Suhail and Sharon Seymour
THE CRAZY ONES, "The Face of a Winner", January 2, 2013, Actors: Sarah Michelle Gellar and more
The Scene: The intervention for Sydney
Klutzy Girl: After Sydney starts playing the client's game and gets a little intense, everyone else stages an intervention. That was a pretty hilarious scene, my favorite from the night. Also picked by Sharon Seymour
