Alex (Erica Durance) isn't really looking for a new man in her life, but Joel (Daniel Gillies) and Sonja (guest star Erin Karpluk) seem to think differently – they've invited her out on a blind double date. As if the evening wasn't awkward enough, her mystery man ends up needing emergency medical attention, and the group are forced to return to Hope Zion Hospital, where Alex has to figure out how to treat him while avoiding Charlie.
It quickly becomes clear to Alex and Joel that her date needs multiple surgeries at once, but before they can help him, they need to get clearance from the new chief of surgery – Dana (Wendy Crewson).
Meanwhile, Charlie (Michael Shanks) works with a stubborn soldier still suffering from a traumatic event in Afghanistan, but finds himself distracted by a Spirit like no other he's ever encountered. When the spirit intervenes in the middle of the soldier's life-or-death surgery, Charlie makes a radical split-second decision about his patient's health that forces him to confront the implications of his connection to the dead.
Meanwhile Maggie (Julia Taylor Ross) treats a woman who has a viral illness that could potentially affect her own child, which forces her and Gavin (Kristopher Turner) to deal with the unspoken issues surrounding her pregnancy.
