Hatred being one of the most intense emotions portrayed in Revenge, I was really looking forward to the new relationships in tonight’s episode. Also, this being Revenge’s last episode before an almost 2 month hiatus, I anticipated the episode ending with me screaming at my TV set. It wasn’t the cliffhanger I was expecting, but doesn't make it less appreciable. Revenge ended tonight with the original Ms. Grayson’s arriving to stir up trouble (now that Lydia seems to have vanished) and Emily waking up in Conrad’s bed. Let’s start from the beginning.
Emily is back on track and she’s crazier than ever. After discovering her bloody stomach in the opening scene, she urges her new confidant Nikko to take a faster approach to closing up the wound. Casually pulling the fire iron from the flames, she insists Nikko cauterize her wound. Badass, or plain crazy? Hard to tell, really. Speaking of crazy blood thirsty revengers, Nikko’s to be watched. Closely. She is the real creep here. Practicing separating skin from flesh, what the hell?(Lol at Nolan's reaction) I love that Revenge is really defying the conventions. The two (3, arguably) most vengeful, violent, organised and borderline sociopathic characters are women, traits more often portrayed on television by men. (I’m talking to you Dex.) Now that Nikko has found her father’s samurai sword, things are about to go down for our British friend. This isn’t going to end well for Aiden. (Other sword fight maybe??)
Emily wants Daniel to pay for taking away her chance at her own family. She’s the one that ultimately pushed him over the edge and I wonder if she’ll ever get that. She’s on a path for revenge and it’s been dangerous. Up to now, the people that have been hurt, have been the people surrounding her. For the first time, she’s been the one to have to pay the price for her misdoings. Jack lost both his wife and brother, Nolan his chance at a happy ending and his company, it just seems normal, she also have to lose something dear to her. Daniel spoke the truth, I don’t think he meant it in the same way but his: Other people will pay the price, was spot on. It’s time for Emily to realise she’s causing a lot of people harm and she can’t always repair her misdoings by writing a check, some things are more permanent.
Daniel and Emily’s new relationship really is fun to watch. Hatred suits them well. They really are nasty with each other and it delectable. Darker Emily proves to be the best. It’s hard to understand how they can do nasty this well. The looks they give each other are subtil, yet carriers of so much emotion. He loves Sarah, so she has to go. Sarah has no idea who she’s dealing with. Victoria, voice of reason, is right: Emily will crush her. Sarah is a sweet girl, and sweet people always are the easiest to get rid of. Emily on the other hand, just doesn’t give a damn what people think of her. And once again the stare Emily gave when Sarah's mother was walking away was breath-taking. Emily started off soft with Sarah, only calling her mother. Laughed, because how old we're we when our biggest treat was, I'll call mom if you don't leave me alone. Emily though, knew what buttons needed to be pushed, like always. She should have become a psychiatrist, she's good at reading people. Good call Sarah, for not continuing the war with Emily. She was bound to lose. Hopefully Sarah is now out of the picture for good and we’ll get to witness a lot more of Daniel and Emily’s relationship.
It’s been established last week Patrick and Nolan are over. Patrick clubbed our favorite tech-savy ally behind the head; there is no coming back from that. Wanting to stir trouble, on his own revengda, Nolan gave Patrick the information about his father. Surely, it would send Patrick over the edge and create a gap between Patrick and Queen V. Patrick motivated to find his dad. He was abandoned, unloved and can't seem to shake of the feeling he'll never be desired and meeting his dad could help him through his issues(I guess). Even though this was meant to make us feel empathy towards the queen's son, after his attitude towards a fan favorite, Nolan, it’s hard to see him as a good guy. I usually enjoy Madeleine Stowe’s interpretation of Victoria, but that panic attack felt ridiculous, parodic almost. Sorry. Victoria then confided in Patrick, on what really happened when she was fifteen. I can’t remember if any of this was previously showed, but I felt like story made Victoria look innocent and vulnerable which made me automatically think she was making it up. I just don’t trust the gal.
Then there was the pool scene. Emily doing laps to clear her mind. She seems to crash into the wall, but we don’t actually witness it. It then cuts to Emily looking lost as hell, examining some paintings in Nolan’s house. What are we supposed to get from that? Did she hit her head again and is slowly losing it? After a confrontation that became quite violent with Daniel, Emily seemed to lose it again, pretty much answering my previous interrogations about the new Ms. Grayson’s mental stability. She then wakes up the next morning (I imagine) in Conrad’s bed. Are they really going there? She’s pretty heavily dressed for someone whose waken up after a booty call, but Conrad’s comment seems to leave not that much space for interpretation. Are they, litteraly or methaphorically, in bed with each other?
I almost forgot, I love that Daniel is getting his ass kicked by his father. It's proving very entertaining to watch Daniel squim.
Pure speculations paragraph: Something had me thinking about the ending of this TV show, not the ending of this episode, but the ending of the series. Emily’s path for revenge can’t go on forever, there are just so many things that can go wrong before she either succeeds or dies, but does it have to. People are wronged every day, is Emily really the only one seeking revenge? The last couple of episodes have Emily beginning to look more and more like her nemesis Queen Victoria. It’s like the circle of revenge. We do not know a lot about Conrad and Victoria’s backstory. (Hopefully wife number 1 will clear that up)It’s established Victoria isn’t an angel, but Emily, from a perspective where we wouldn’t understand her underlining motivations for revenge, could easily be perceived as worse. What I am feeling is as we see the differences between Emily and Victoria thin, we will find out not only Emily beginning to look like Victoria, but Victoria used to be like Emily. On her path to her own revenge, she wrongs someone of her own, thus continuing the circle of revenge. Just a thought. Comment!
Rating: 4/5
I quite enjoyed the episode, but not as much as last week’s. This is mostly due to the fact that there were not enough Emily/Daniel verbal takedowns for my taste and there was too much focus on Patrick trying to find his daddy. Also, Revenge can always use a little more Nolan (and his snarky one-liners)
