-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy Tuesday overnight victory for CBS, which featured the series premiere/preview of drama “Intelligence” at 9 p.m. Out of blockbuster “NCIS” (which topped the night with a 12.8 rating/19 share at 8 p.m.), “Intelligence” opened with a dominant 10.2/15 from 9-10 p.m., which was just seven percent below regularly scheduled “NCIS: Los Angeles” on the year-ago evening (11.0/17 on 1/08/13). Comparably, retention for “Intelligence” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “NCIS” (12.9/19) was acceptable at 79 percent, and there was a dip of only eight percent at 9:30 p.m. (10.6/16 to 9.8/15). The bottom line: CBS achieved the sampling it was hoping for. Now let’s see what happens on Monday.
Minus the lead-in support from “NCIS” (and opposite “Castle” on ABC and “The Blacklist” on NBC), “Intelligence” could face an uphill battle in the Monday 10 p.m. hour (where it debuts in its regularly scheduled time period next week). But the advantage of replacing “Hostages” is the low bar of comparison. There is every reason to believe “Intelligence” will be a stronger performer.
“Person of Interest” capped off the evening for the Eye net with a dominant 7.8/13 at 10 p.m., which was a whopping 169 percent above the DOA debut of ABC drama “Killer Women” (2.9/ 5). Comparably, “Killer Women” was nine percent below “Private Practice” on the year-ago evening (3.2/ 6 on 1/08/13), and six percent below the debut of fall occupant “Lucky 7” (3.1/ 5 on 9/24/13), which only lasted for two episodes. The only redeeming observation for “Killer Women” was overnight growth out of lead-in “Trophy Wife” (#3: 2.6/ 4 at 9:30 p.m.) of 12 percent.
Earlier in the overnight on ABC was drama “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” at a distant second-place 4.2/ 6 from 8-9 p.m., which was a series-low (and further proof that “S.H.I.E.L.D.” is not the hit everyone was anticipating). Sitcom “The Goldbergs” dropped to a 3.5/ 5 at 9 p.m. (#2), which was still a 35 percent improvement over year-ago occupant “Happy Endings” (2.6/ 4 on 1/08/13).
Elsewhere, two-hours of “The Biggest Loser” on NBC scored a 3.8/ 6 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., leading into a second-place 4.3/ 7 for “Chicago Fire” at 10 p.m. Year-to-year, “Chicago Fire” built by 19 percent from “Parenthood” (3.6/ 6 on 1/08/13). Fox populated the evening with its ratings-challenged sitcom rotation of “Dads” (#4: 2.4/ 4), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#4: 2.5/ 4), “New Girl” (#4: 2.6/ 4) and “The Mindy Project” (#4: 2.1/ 3). And The CW aired encores of dramas “The Originals” (#5: 0.7/ 1) and “Supernatural” (#5: 0.6/ 1). While “New Girl” will generate some interest among adults 18-49 (and other key young adult demos), the year-to-year overnight slippage was noticeable at 16 percent.
As a reminder, Fox on Tuesday in midseason will feature “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” at a new time, 9:30 p.m., on Feb. 4 (and in place of “The Mindy Project,” which is taking a break until April 1). And “Glee” moves into the Tuesday 8 p.m. hour on Feb. 25 (with “Dads” at 8 p.m. taking a break). At this point, there is no reason to believe tired “Glee” will generate much interest on Tuesday.
