Solid Return for “The Bachelor” on ABC
Household
Rating/Share
ABC 6.0/ 9
CBS 3.5/ 5
Fox 3.0/ 4
NBC 2.8/ 4
CW 0.6/ 1
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Monday 1/07/13:
Fox: +15, ABC: + 7, CW: no change, CBS: -10, NBC: -35
—–
-Winners:
“The Bachelor” (ABC), “Castle” (ABC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Hostages” (CBS)
—–
-Ratings Breakdown:
The return of “The Bachelor,” featuring Juan Pablo in his journey for love reality TV style, led ABC to opening week victory. “The Bachelor” kicked-off with a 6.0 rating/9 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was 13 percent above the 5.3/ 8 on the year-ago evening. And that 5.3 rating in the overnights translated into 6.92 million viewers and a 2.3 rating/6 share among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data). Keep in mind, of course, that competing NBC was in repeats and CBS aired encores of “2 Broke Girls” (#2: 4.4/ 6) and “Mom” (#3: 3.6/ 5) from 8-9 p.m.
“The Bachelor” led into a dominant 6.0/ 9 for “Castle” at 10 p.m.
In series-finale news, there was not much interest in “Hostages” on CBS, which scored a 3.4/ 5 from 9-11 p.m. But in a sea of quick cancellations (or downgrades to deadly Saturday), you have to give the eye net credit for running all 15 episodes of “Hostages” as planned. And what will be beneficial to upcoming drama replacement “Intelligence” (which previews tonight at 9 p.m. out of “NCIS”) is the low benchmark in the Monday 10 p.m. hour set by “Hostages.”
Elsewhere, on-the-fence Fox drama “Almost Human” (#3: 4.2/ 6 at 8 p.m.) led into a 1.9/ 3 for a repeat of Sleepy Hollow” at 9 p.m. (#4). Three repeat episodes of “The Blacklist” on NBC averaged a modest 2.8/ 4 from 8-11 p.m. And The CW populated the evening with encores of “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 0.7/ 1) and “Beauty and the Beast” (#5: 0.5/ 1).

Decent for Almost Human, at least it's not dropping. While not a sure deal, if it gets a 1.7 or above, I'd call it safe
ReplyDeleteThey will never get picked up by another broadcast network, slight possibility a cable channel but unlikely.
ReplyDeleteseason low or series low for Castle ?
ReplyDeleteOn another note, why didn't the CW air originals Beauty and the Beast last night? They will have many unaired episodes later in the season, why not burn them off in an uncompetitive night like last night? Surely they should be able to do better than repeats of itself.
ReplyDeleteMeh, it's very hard to read. The share by definition depends on how many people are watching TV. Almost Human got a 6% share, meaning 6% of the households watching were tuning in. But it could be that the total households watching TV changed but Almost Human kept the exact same households tuning in, in which case the % of households would actually be up, despite the number of households being the same. Regardless, remember that share is in terms of households which is often not correlated well with 18-49s.
ReplyDeleteWow The Bachelor dominated!
ReplyDeleteOh, okay. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteGlee is irrelevant because next season will be it's last
ReplyDeleteCastle's DVR+7 may be high this week due to the game. I expect big numbers.

yes but it'll still be on the schedule next season.
ReplyDeleteYeah what @CrimTV said. If it continues to collapse I think there is a chance FOX sends it to Fridays, airs it in the summer or gives it a shorter season instead of a full one which would effectively mean that AH would have to fight it for a slot.
ReplyDeleteCastle's rating is yet another example of how much more important compatibility of the lead-in is compared to its raw numbers
ReplyDeleteAlmost Human is doing OK considering the lack of support FOX has given it
ReplyDeleteWhy didnt ABC air Killer Women behind The Bachelor and hold Castle till DWTS returns? How is airing Killer Women behind the anemic Trophy Wife a good idea?
I didnt even think of that till you suggested it, I totally agree they should have aired episodes of their Monday shows for another two weeks pre Christmas and then come back this week to burn off as many episodes as possible instead of leaving them till the summer In beauty's case? HOD you can sort of understand as its moving to Friday to air.
ReplyDeletedon't forget that a lot of their dramas have shorter season, The Following, Sleepy Hollow, Almost Human, Gang Related, Rake could all make the schedule if FOX give them all shorter seasons and time slot share. There are 36 or so weeks in the season they could essentially air 13-16 episodes of several shows to fill out the season instead of airing endless repeats.
ReplyDeleteBCS on ESPN drew 25.6 million viewers and averaged an 8.7 in the 18-49 demo.
ReplyDeleteIn a competition where Almost Human and Glee are head to head, I'm leaning on Almost Human; I mean, Glee has bombed so hard on Thursdays that its 6th season is bound to end on Fridays after Bones.
ReplyDeleteI think X Factor will be cancelled (or at least reduced to one day ala Dancing With The Stars), and with Gang Related pushed to summer, I thinka show that handles high 1s (1.8 in today's finals) is enough for them. Not good, not great, but enough. If it sinks below 1.6 it's a goner, but for now I'd say it's in a margin between buble and safe. Let's say bubble for now
Couldn't agree more
ReplyDeleteIf my hubby hadn't fallen asleep, the BCS would have been on our TV all evening. We rarely watch college football, but it was the championship. We only watch MNF if our team is playing. Once he fell asleep, I switched over to ABC to watch Castle. Then after the news, I watched Castle over again on the DVR. Interesting that the networks other than ABC ran almost all reruns.
ReplyDeleteI regard todays ratings with a grain of salt. Since they might be impacted by the BCS National Championships. It scored a 15.3 overnight rating on ESPN. Here are some stats from press release:
ReplyDeleteBirmingham led all markets for the telecast with a 55.8 rating, marking the third highest-rated bowl game on ESPN in the market behind the 2011 and 2012 BCS Championships. Jacksonville was the second highest-rated market with a 31.1 rating followed by Knoxville (26.6), Atlanta (25.8), Orlando (24.9), Tampa-St. Petersburg (24.2), Memphis (24.1), Greenville (24.0), Nashville (23.5) and Charlotte (22.2). In addition to being among the top 10 markets, the title matchup was also the highest-rated bowl on ESPN in Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa-St. Petersburg.
No way of knowing that, so your guess is as good as mine - assuming that you are right and I am wrong without proof is just silly. I don't follow Sports' ratings but are these numbers that high compared to what MNF usually pulls? They may be, I have no idea of what they usually are, so it's an honest question and I could be way off here. Also, if you want to go go in terms of competition, its procedural competition was in repeats, which should also have helped. Another point is that this is nothing new... every year Castle tends to fall when airing with The Bachelor!
ReplyDeleteThe BCS Championship game was last night. That is what hurt us not the lead in.
ReplyDeleteYes, but if Glee is shipped to Fridays and X-Factor doesn't come back, the only Monday-Thursday hours FOX has are Sleepy Hollow and a comedy block (which will already require some replacements). That leaves 5 hours to fill and it's impossible for them to launch that many new shows (especially considering some of the comedies would be new). Even if they bring a Ramsay show to fill 2 hours, I don't see how can they fill the remaining 3 hours with new shows (effectively making for 4 new hours of programming, plus the new animation on Sunday, so 4.5). Therefore, either Glee or Almost Human or Rake will have to fill at least one more hour, unless they transplant Bones from Fridays. That's why I say Almost Human is in direct competition with Glee.
ReplyDeleteSeason low if it stays below a 1.9 but it won't be series low unless it adjusts down to a 1.6. If it ends up being a 1.7 then it matches the series low S5 E09 Secret Santa
ReplyDeleteTrue. I think FOX renewed it for a full season though, but the odds of getting shipped to Friday's is big.
ReplyDeleteQuick question, does the household "share" make a difference? I'm curious because the only other time Almost Human got a '6' was with it's last episode when it was 3.9/6. All the other times when the rating has been above '4' it's gotten a share of '7'.
ReplyDeleteYes, with Hart I think it's smart to save episodes because I actually think the show has a shot of doing better on Fridays (doing the same is actually improving already). But they could have doubled up on Beauty for this month like CBS just did with Hostages. Oh well
ReplyDeleteYes, that's true in theory but in practice:
ReplyDelete1) The Following can only air in the Spring because Kevin Bacon only agrees to do 15 episodes per year and he has already filled is quota with the 15 from Season 2 this year, you need a bigger break between seasons for that show because of that
2) Sleepy Hollow I was already counting with it being on during fall
3) Gang Related will air during summer so I don't see how they can get a renewal and a Season 2 ready that fast. Maybe, yes, it has happened with Lie to Me Before. I will give you a point here.
4) Rake and Almost Human I was already counting on it.
So I will rephrase:
Assuming that
1) Sleepy Hollow, New Girl, B99 occupy 3 Monday-Thursday hours
2) Bones remains on Friday
3) X-Factor is cancelled
4) 2 new comedies (1 new hour)
5) 2 new dramas (2 new hours, 3 new hours in total)
6) 1 Gordon Ramsay show that takes up 2 hours comes to fall
This still leaves FOX with 1 hour to fill Monday-Thursday. That hour will be battled between:
1) Glee, which either gets that or a season on Friday
2) Almost Human
3) Rake
4) Gang Related
I'm going to be very surprised if it gets 1.7. DVR ratings are much better than live ratings for them, but at this point their best shot is being picked up by another network/channel, IMO.
ReplyDeleteIf The bachelor has another incredible season like last year it will become ridiculous that it is the replacement show while DWTS is the normal one. IMO, both shows should move to Sundays and it should be The Bachelor/Filler/DWTS.
ReplyDeleteIMO, that's a bit optimistic. I think it's more "likely to be cancelled" if it drops below 1.5/1.6 and bubble if it remains in the 1.6-1.9 area, meaning it could go either way. I am only ready to call it safe if it goes to 2.0 again or if the other FOX dramas decrease enough to low the standard (i.e. Sleepy Hollow finishing on low note, Rake bombing or being soft, Bones slowing up the Friday domination, The Following coming back way way weaker than last year and Glee continuing to bomb on Tuesdays like its doing on Thursday)
ReplyDelete
