“The Big Bang Theory” Leads CBS to Victory
Household
Rating/Share
CBS 7.1/11
Fox 5.5/ 9
NBC 3.0/ 5
ABC 2.8/ 4
CW 1.5/ 2
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Thursday 1/31/13:
NBC: – 3, CW: – 6, Fox: -13, CBS: -21, ABC: -48
—–
-Winners:
“The Big Bang Theory” (CBS), “American Idol” (Fox), “Elementary” (CBS)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Community” (NBC), “Parks and Recreation” (NBC), “Rake” (Fox)
—–
-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS topped the household overnights on this final Thursday in January, with a 1.6 rating point advantage over second-place Fox. But the network needs to seriously think about the future of freshman sitcom “The Millers” (#2: 6.8/10 at 8:30 p.m.) given the 43 percent erosion out of mega-hit “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the night: 12.0/19 at 8 p.m.). While no one expects “The Millers” to fully maintain the lead-in, this is too severe. As for “The Big Bang Theory,” don’t be too surprised to see James Earl Jones snag an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. And that Carrie Fisher cameo? Outstanding!
Next on the Eye net was “The Crazy Ones” with a dominant 5.2/ 8 in the overnights at 9 p.m., followed by 11 year-old “Two and a Half Men” at a 5.7/ 9 (#1) at 9:30 p.m. Since most comedies at 9:30 p.m. tend to lose 15-30 percent of its lead-in, the growth of 10 percent for “Two and a Half Men” out of “The Crazy Ones” means a 12th season is not out of the question.
Capping off the night for CBS was “Elementary” at a 6.5/11 at 10 p.m., which outdelivered the second hour of NBC special “Saturday Night Live Presents an SNL Sports Spectacular” (#2: 3.3/ 6) and a repeat of “Shark Tank” on ABC (#3: 2.7/ 5) by eight percent combined.
Overall, the “Saturday Night Live” special on NBC averaged a 3.3/ 5 from 9-11 p.m., which earned NBC’s strongest overnight rating in that block since the Dec. 5 telecast of “The Sound of Music Live!” And it built from “Parks and Recreation” (#4: 2.3/ 4 at 8:30 p.m.) by 43 percent.
Earlier in the evening on NBC was struggling “Community” at a fourth-place 2.1/ 3 at 8 p.m. Given NBC’s ongoing sitcom woes (and the already confirmed return of “Parks and Recreation” for next season), there is no reason to believe “Community” will be back for season six. Enough is enough already.
In week two news, Fox drama “Rake” slipped to a distant second-place 3.6/ 6 in the overnights at 9 p.m., which was 20 percent below its already disappointing debut one week earlier (4.5/ 7 on Jan. 23). And retention for “Rake” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “American Idol” (#1: 7.9/12) was 54 percent. One year earlier, “Glee” at 9 p.m. Thursday was slightly higher with a 3.9/ 6 (on 1/31/13). Keep in mind that “Rake” has yet to face “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC, which will certainly not be beneficial.
Overall, “American Idol” scored a 7.5/12 from 8-9 p.m., which was six percent below the 8.0/12 on the year-ago evening,
Elsewhere, two-hours of cooking competition “The Taste” was not too tasty on ABC, with a bland 2.8/ 4 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that trailed competing “American Idol” by 63 percent. And The CW had a typical Thursday with its pairing of 8-10 p.m. dramas “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.7/ 3) and “Reign” (#5: 1.3/ 2).

He marked Elementary a winner. I'll be outside looking for levitating porcines.
ReplyDeleteLast week Reign was at 1.4/2, so its down a bit. But i still hope that it can do 0.7 since TTP got 0.7 yesterday
ReplyDelete"Given NBC's ongoing sitcom woes (and the already confirmed return of Parks and Recreation for next season), there is no reason to believe Community will be back for season six"
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm not a hardcore Community fan, I have to disagree here. The fact that NBC hasn't been able to launch a sitcom as successful as Community since, well, Community, is why it just might squeak by with a final season. When all your freshman get 0.7 or so, and Community gets 1.1, you're probably going to renew the 1.1 show. Or stop programming comedy. I suppose they could just air one hour of Parks and a newbie.
Exactly, they don't have a new comedy that could do better.
ReplyDeleteBig Bang Theory beat Idol?! Saw that coming a mile away!
ReplyDeleteIs it the first time that Elementary is a winner?
ReplyDeleteMaybe for Marc Berman, but in my book, Elementary is always a winner :)
ReplyDeleteI think maybe since early 2013.
ReplyDeleteElementary wins every week. It just goes unrecognized, lol. Demo, schmemo.
ReplyDeleteSame here
ReplyDeleteI think the show isn't suffering being unrecognized but is still suffering under the Sherlock hype. The show got pretty much torn appart by Sherlock fans for being 'an american ripoff'
ReplyDeleteAgree. Community and Parks are the only moderately successful comedy block they have going. Barring ABC just abandoning comedy altogether, I think we will see another season of Community. Plus I remember someone mentioned that in a recent Community promo, NBC even flashed the #sixseasonsandamovie hashtag at the bottom of the promo. I think that bodes well, or it could be wishful thinking. Here's to keeping hope alive!
ReplyDeleteWhich is a shame, because it is so different. And so marvelous with characterization. I like Sherlock and think it's beautifully done, but Elementary has a lot of heart for a CBS seriacedural.
ReplyDeleteCan't freaking wait to see the early numbers for Elementary!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think the key might be how many youngins turned in for that SNL special. Last time it was a 6.6/11 and did 2.0, but I know it's impossible to tell from households what the demo will be.
ReplyDeleteThat comment about Community - it's all NBC has(along with parks and rec) with regards to comedy, so yeah. I would put money on it getting another season.
ReplyDeleteAmerican Idol dropping ...
ReplyDeleteOuch for American Idol, it keeps falling and falling.
ReplyDeleteCommunity doing a 1.1 after five seasons is still good, regarding ratings for today NBC comedies.
ReplyDeleteDamn it, The Crazy Ones. why you fall again?
ReplyDeleteI can see why he would think that based on the ratings, but sometimes a shows renewal status defies logic. NBC have been renewing poor rated veteran comedies for a few years now because they're having trouble replacing them. So it isnt unreasonable to assume that NBC might renew one of Community as well as parks, though it may comed down to how well the mid season comedies do.

Ouch for the millers and the crazy ones not great numbers
ReplyDeleteI say there bubble shows
ReplyDeleteThe Millers will be renewed, but I doubt it will survive without TBBT's massive lead-in.
ReplyDeleteTCO and 2.5 Men are fighting for renewal with Mom, I hop 2.5 Men gets canceled, I'm tired of this misogynist show.
Forever on the bubble.
ReplyDeleteFirst time Elementary with double digits in L+SD in awhile!!
ReplyDeleteFirst time after this season's premiere
ReplyDelete0.7 for Reign , yessss
ReplyDeletePlease do not adjust down
Great for Elementary!!! Last night's ep was very subtle in every way so much nuance in the acting. Happy for TBBT, to be expected. As mentioned somewhere I'm hoping 2 and a half men get cancelled so that both Mom and TCO will be renewed. 2halfmen used to be the big cbs show which is why it always got renewed but now it's just meh. Retire it pls
ReplyDeleteI hope both TCO and TTP get renewed too, but The Millers is surely getting renewed, so CBS may renew only one of the two, and Mom definitely wins. I know I shouldn't be saying this, but I hope Friends With Better Lives bombs so CBS doesn't have to take it into consideration for renewal, as well.
ReplyDeleteReign did a 0.7, yeaaaah
ReplyDeleteIt did do a 0.7!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're right about Mom getting renewed, best comedy so far with 2 Broke Girls.
ReplyDeleteYay for Elementary!!!!!!!!... haven't seen those numbers in awhile!
ReplyDeleteI think the show is suffering because johny lee miller is the only who is pulling through acting wise and storyline wise. They barely give Lucy liu anything to do except follow sherlock and ask him what he is doing so that he can give a brilliant answer.
ReplyDeleteMarcus Bell had a more interesting storyline this season than her.
Yes,i know its always the 18-49 like everyone else doesn't exist! I don't think i know anyone over 50 that doesn't work,so there time is as valuable as a 29 year old.
ReplyDeletei just hope Reign dont adjust down like last week, TAHM is down but still is getting renewed i hope the show last for at least 2 more seasons, this seasos has been good so far better than the last
ReplyDeleteMaybe SNL should be the lead in for Community and Parks...
ReplyDeleteThe "broad" comedies aren't really working for NBC (and basically all the other networks). Maybe look at a comedy that's not too broad but not too niche. Basically a comedy that can get 2's in the demo!
I disagree Lucy Liu does a great job and the little movements and actions really round out her character. She may not always have a huge role but when she does it's amazing
ReplyDeleteHa,lol....
ReplyDelete
