CBS topped this fourth Monday in January, beating No. 2 ABC by six percent in the overnights. Recent drama entry “Intelligence” remained the weak link, with a second-place 4.7/ 7 at 10 p.m. But opposite an encore of “Castle” on ABC (#3: 4.4/ 7), this was an increase of 18 percent from the 4.0/ 7 one week earlier (which translated into 5.77 million viewers and a 1/1 rating/3 share among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data).
Earlier in the evening on CBS was the 8-10 p.m. sitcom pairing of soon-to-conclude “How I Met Your Mother” (#1 for the evening: 6.7/10), “2 Broke Girls” (#1: 6.1/ 9), “Mike & Molly” (#1: 6.6/10) and freshman “Mom” (#1t: 5.9/ 9), which is now holding enough of the “Mike & Molly” lead-in to be considered a sure thing for renewal.
In time period return news, Kevin Bacon drama “The Following” on Fox disappointed with a third-place 4.5/ 7 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that was down by 29 percent from the 6.3/ 9 on the year-ago evening. And this loss is only magnified given it returned for season two out of the top-rated NFC Championship Game on Sunday, Jan. 19. An encore of “The Following” opened the evening for Fox with a 2.7/ 4 at 8 p.m.
Over at ABC, “The Bachelor” remains comfortable time period filler in between editions of “Dancing With the Stars” with a 5.9/ 9 from 8-10 p.m., which was on par from the year-ago evening. And that led into the aforementioned encore of “Castle” at a third-place 4.4/ 7.
Next was NBC, which benefited by the dominant 6.2/11 for “The Blacklist” at 10 p.m. Comparably, that built from a 9 p.m. edition of “Hollywood Game Night” (#4: 2.8/ 4 at 9 p.m.) by a whopping 121 percent and only enforces its status as the bona fide freshman series hit of the season. Earlier in the evening on NBC was an 8 p.m. edition of failing “Hollywood Game Night” at a third-place 3.3/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.
The CW capped off the evening with the pairing of dramas “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 1.1/ 2) and “Beauty and the Beast” (#5: 0.8/ 1), which has absolutely no shot of a third season.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteI'm a bit shocked by how hefty The Following dropped from its premiere; of course, the demos will surely be very good, but I thought it might do as well as when it premiered last year.

The Blacklist just keeps proving its a true hit, even without The Voice
That's why I never take Berman seriously. His posts are useless 100% of the time as are the way he sorts 'Winners' from 'Losers'

Then why does STV keep posting them? What am I missing? So far, Berman's posts have only been confusing to me, and if they are, in fact, 100% useless, then why do we promote him and his "reviews" so much? Please, someone, fill in the blanks for me here!

If you don't like them it fine, no one is forcing you to read them, so why do you?
Oh. Well. I don't read them, actually. But other people seem so annoyed at his posts that I was just curious. Didn't mean it in an offensive way... It just seems like the guy has no credibility. I'm personally fine with them being posted, but it's always made me curious as to whether or not he really is reliable since there are lot of people who don't think so :/

ReplyDeleteAs am I, but I do read them to get as DarkUFO pointed out, an estimate of how my shows fared in the early overnights which can be way off the mark as far as the demographic numbers are concerned.
ReplyDeleteI may be WAY off here but, are the early overnights that Berman posts more an indication of the number of Total Viewers as apposed to the 18-49 demographic. IE, the bigger the overnight ratings (NCIS for example) the older the audience for that particular show?
I read Berman's analysis, even when it doesn't correlate with the demos, usually when the households rise the demo numbers rises too, and when they decrease same story. So, disappointing for The Following, while good for HIMYM and The Blacklist
ReplyDeleteWell you can compare the numbers to the overnights for the season finale for The Following in the Spring. It scored a 5.1 HH rating which translated to a 2.7 demo rating. It is down from those numbers and from the 2nd season premiere (4.4 demo) that aired on Sunday after NFC championship.

ReplyDeleteYeah, the numbers are probably going to be good for FOX's standards, but I imagine that they would have liked that their timeslot premire matched last year's premire at least after the exposition it got following the NFC championship.
ReplyDeleteWhile I don't actually think The Following will be a loser in the final ratings, it's ratings are a bit of a double edged sword for me. On one hand I'd love it to keep doing well because it's a good show but on the other hand, the lower it falls, the higher the chance of Almost Human getting a second season is. At the moment, that's my main priority on Fox.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Spotted Ratings, The Following had 42% of his audience on the adults 18-49 demo last season, Sleepy Hollow, which had similar HH ratings skewed 44% over the season.
ReplyDeleteBased on that I'm predicting a 2.3-2.5 rating for The Following.
They're very valuable as a benchmark. You just have to take a few things with a grain of salt when reading them:
ReplyDelete*Berman is very "old world" when it comes to TV ratings. He doesn't seem as smitten with adults 18-49 as other people, and as such, puts way too much "winner/loser" analysis into household and total viewership numbers.
*He cares about retention far more than networks seem to.
*He's sometimes sloppy with the data. Based on his report from last night's Grammys, you'd have thought the show went down. What he didn't tell you was that he was taking an overnight measure through 12AM for the Grammys - they went off the air by 11:45PM. Last year, the ratings were through 11:30 but the show went off only a few minutes before.
*He does "year-ago" (and boy does he overuse that term), which aren't always the most relevant benchmark.

ReplyDeleteMe too. I really hate that it was put up against Castle and Blacklist, both of which had pretty significant fan bases already associated with before Intelligence was even shown. I honestly think if it was on at any other night or time, it would be doing much much better.

The Following cant move to Sundays. FOX would have to reschedule the whole "animation domination" programming. Those shows are too important to FOX to move them.
