Tuesday 1/21/14 Metered Market Ratings
Encores Lift CBS to Victory; “The Goldbergs” a Positive for ABC
Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.6/10
NBC 4.6/ 7
ABC 2.8/ 4
Fox 2.7/ 4
CW 1.6/ 2
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 1/22/13:
NBC: +28, CW: +23, Fox: + 4, CBS: + 3, ABC: -36
———-
-Winners:
“NCIS” R (CBS), “NCIS: Los Angeles” R (CBS)
-Honorable Mention:
“The Biggest Loser” (NBC), “The Originals” (CW), “The Goldbergs” (ABC), “Supernatural” (CW), “Chicago Fire” (NBC)
-Fading:
“New Girl” (NBC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Trophy Wife” (ABC), “The Mindy Project” (Fox), “Killer Women” (ABC)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS finished first overall in the household overnights in each of the six half-hours despite airing encores of “NCIS” (8.5 rating/13 share – No.1 for the evening), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (6.4/10) and “Person of Interest” (5.0/ 8), which only proves their worth in off-network. Although “NCIS: Los Angeles” is the perfect fit out of its parent series, an idea for next season could be to position the new spin-off series in the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour with “Los Angeles” an option for another evening. But let’s see what happens with the proposed spin-off first.
Over at NBC, “The Biggest Loser” rose to its best overnight household rating since Dec. 17 with a second-place 4.7/ 7 from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that was up by 27 percent from one week earlier. And “Chicago Fire” followed with a second-place 4.5/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was its best since Dec. 10 and 18 percent above year-ago occupant “Parenthood” (3.8/ 7 on 1/22/13).
There was one notable piece of positive news on ABC care of sitcom “The Goldbergs” at a third-place 3.4/ 5 at 9 p.m. While that may not seem all that spectacular on paper, it did build by 42 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of an encore of lead-in “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (2.4/ 4, with a 2.7/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.). Given the comments by ABC President Paul Lee at the Winter Tour, both “S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “The Goldbergs” will be returning next season.
Also on ABC was sitcom “Trophy Wife” at a 2.7/ 4 at 9:30 p.m., which was 21 percent below “The Goldbergs,” and waiting-to-be axed drama “Killer Women” at a distant third-place 2.6/ 4 at 10 p.m. Since ABC canceled the planned session of “Killer Women” at the Winter Tour at the last minute, it is curtains no doubt.
Elsewhere, Fox increased week-to-week by 12 percent with its two-hour sitcom block: “Dads” (#3t, 2.7/ 4), Golden Globe winner “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#3: 3.1/ 5), “New Girl” (#4: 2.7/ 4) and soon-to-be hiatus-bound “The Mindy Project” (#4: 2.3/ 3). “Dads” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” benefited by not facing an original episode of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” But “New Girl” was still down by 16 percent year-to-year (versus a 3.2/ 5 on 1/22/13). And the combination of CW dramas “The Originals” (#5: 1.6/ 2) and “Supernatural” (#5: 1.7/ 2) was up by 23 percent, on average, from year-ago dramas “Hart of Dixie” (1.3/ 2 on 1/22/13) and failed “Emily Owens, M.D.” (1.2/ 2).

OMG Supernatural :D I am so damn happy :') I knew this episode was gonna bring great ratings!!!
ReplyDeleteThe numbers also have to be adjusted because I know the Originals and Supernatural were pre-empted in my area (Baltimore, MD). I stayed up to watch the show at 11pm... My guess is those numbers will not be added to the scheduled time slot... That's a shame.
ReplyDeleteThey are added if the show aired before 3 am and of course people watched it. But its not counted in the preliminaries.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is a lot of fans may not have stayed up until midnight to watch it, but DVDed it and will watch today. I'm crossing my fingers though.
ReplyDeleteI surprised Berman didn't mention the preemption. He usually finds any reason to discount Supernatural.
Well i don't think that data comes with HH ratings. They usually give the info with fast nationals.
ReplyDeleteThat is correct.
ReplyDeleteHe wouldn't have mentioned it if Supernatural was up even with the preemption - because that means the show did even better than the good numbers!
ReplyDeleteThere are two things that need to be counted:
ReplyDeleteIf a show is aired at a different hour, then the ratings of those who watched another show\a game\whatever during its usual hour will be reduced from the finals and the ratings who watched the show at another hour would be added to the finals. The total of such adjustments leads more to adjustments downwards than upwards in the case of preemtions.
TVBTN themselves find out about many preemptions only after posting the information and there are many preemptions they are not aware of, like Arrow's last Wednesday. They also only post about preemptions in one of the major markets.
ReplyDeleteCW was pre-empted last night
ReplyDeleteBerman got tired of the SPN fans whining
ReplyDeleteI think you accidentally said "whining" instead of "pointing out his wrongdoings".
ReplyDeleteThe fact that CF could only muster a 4.5 against a POI (R) and DOA Killer Women does not bode well for Spring when it will not have TV as a lead-in.
ReplyDeleteIt will have the comedies lead in, which will have a Voice lead in. The show will be fine
ReplyDeleteCF already experiences a big drop-off from TV. You really think unproven comedies are going to help CF? NBC would've been smart to have Tuesday line-up of TV/CF/CP or TV/CF/SVU (which would easily dominate the timeslot). I just think NBC is missing an opportunity
ReplyDeleteBrooklyn 9-9 got a 1.9! BEST SINCE PREMIERE :O!
ReplyDeleteWas it preempted or something? I hope not, I hope it really got that number :D
Also, keep in mind in several markets (Denver and St. Louis, for example), the CW line-up is pushed back an hour (so shows start at 8MT/8CT instead of 7). So that means that TO's ratings are included in SPN's HH numbers in preliminaries, etc.
ReplyDeleteWell, it already made it through its first season with a SVU lead in, which is way weaker than The Voice, so...
ReplyDeleteCF doesn't have TV as a lead-in right now. It has The Biggest Loser for a lead in right now and usually grows from the lead-in. And the Voice comes back in Spring.
ReplyDeleteYou can sure tell when The Voice isn't on.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding and look at how it is middling. No SOA, no competition on ABC and a repeat on CBS. NBC has hurt CF by rarely airing repeats (so viewers who, say, watch POI will switch to catch CF), big gaps between episodes. That's not how you build a procedural's audience.
ReplyDeleteNo pre-emptions. It didn't have the face a new episode of SHIELD.
ReplyDeleteMindy....that's somewhat better. B99 rated higher than New Girl????
ReplyDeleteIf so, the show will do great after New Girl!!!!!

Awesome B99
ReplyDelete1 for Trophy Wife :'(
CW was preempted in Baltimore, Norfolk and Richmond for college basketball.
ReplyDeleteDang The Goldbergs why you keep droping, you my favorite new comedy ! The Originals is doing great
ReplyDeleteOh no nononono for Trophy Wife, it just keeps doing lower and lower -_-
ReplyDeleteBrooklyn Nine-Nine beating New Girl and everything else? Is it because Agents of SHIELD was a rerun? Because Fox needs to pay attention and play with the scheduling so Brooklyn Nine-Nine can stay and slay.
ReplyDeleteWell they are moving it after New Girl, on 4th February. And It also got the post Super-bowl on 2nd February and its airing together with New Girl. I think FOX is trying their best to make the show a success.
ReplyDeleteGood, I need this show to survive and be a success, this and Sleepy Hollow are the only new shows I watched this Fall.
ReplyDeleteThe show got a 1.4 in the male 18-34 demo, highest of the night. I think Fox will do a lot to keep it on air.
ReplyDeleteI am gonna be careful about the ratings, since East Coast markets experienced interruptions due to the weather situation. Hoping the ratings stay as high as there are.
ReplyDeleteum Chicago Fire doesn't have The Voice lead-in now though....
ReplyDeleteI think Brooklyn and SHIELD probably have a huge overlap in audience
ReplyDeleteCould be, but at least we know that if it's not facing that, Brooklyn can get good(ish) ratings for Fox.
ReplyDeleteBy far my favorite comedy! I would hate to loose it.
ReplyDeleteso Justin B girly fans did not F-ed up SPN ratings? well that's AWESOME news that's a big FU to Justin fans do not F with SPN fans.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Mindy is getting cancelled.
ReplyDeleteI know! Last night's episode was hilarious! And I cried when Adam mouthed "I love you" to Beverly. It was a beautiful episode!
ReplyDeleteYessss!!
