It was all about Fox last night, of course, with the San Francisco 49ers at the Seattle Seahawks on the NFC Championship at an estimated 20.9 rating/51 share in the household overnights (from 7-10 p.m.). Comparably, that was more than seven times the competition combined. Results for the season premiere of lead-out “The Following” were not available at present, however. And results for any live-action sporting event are always approximate, of course.
One year earlier, CBS scored a 28.5/43 in the overnights for the Baltimore Ravens at the New England Patriots on the AFC Championship.
Elsewhere, the pickings were slim. ABC aired a repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (#2: 0.9/ 3 at 7 p.m.) into 8 p.m. special “The Bachelor: Bachelor Love Stories” (#2: 1.0/ 3) and original episodes of “Revenge” (#2: 1.4/ 3) and “Betrayal” (#3: 0.8/ 2) from 9-11 p.m. “Betrayal” was a series finale, and “Revenge” plummeted to a series low. Needless to say, ABC wasted original programming opposite football on NBC last night.
CBS populated the evening with repeats of “60 Minutes” (#2: 1.4/ 4), an 8 p.m. edition of “The Good Wife” (#4: 0.6/ 1) and “The Mentalist” (#4: 0.6/ 1) and “Criminal Minds” (#2: 1.0/ 3) from 9-11 p.m. And NBC ran a repeat of “Dateline” (#4: 0.6/ 2 at 7 p.m.) into 2011 theatrical “Bridesmaids,” with a 0.8/ 3 from 8-11 p.m.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

I am not saying Paul Lee isn't a disaster for ABC but there weren't many options left before the Olympic games start. And i cant imagine what people would say if Revenge aired next week against Grammys.
I would have burned off Betrayal with two episodes tonight and left Revenge air two episodes last week, instead of this. That would have been better. If the show was going to be back, it should have came back after the Super Bowl in February, not January

ReplyDeleteI would have put it on hiatus like OUAT and brought them back together, thus avoiding the entire football post season and awards season in one fell swoop. Remember, they scheduled both Revenge and OUAT against football and awards last season and both shows barely survived it. Paul Lee, having somehow only learned the lesson half way (how that's even possible beats me) decided to only throw half the Sunday lineup (Revenge) bus this season for some inexplicable reason.

ReplyDeleteI am not so sure it would hold up that well. Last winter Olympic would score a 5.0 in the 18-49 demo on an daily basis. And then the Sunday after the Superbowl you have the Walking dead returning also. Lets just say i hope ABC uses the Oscars to promote their new Sunday line up.

ReplyDeleteThe problem with ABC is that they don't have product that they can re-use - i.e. procedurals. WIth the exception of comedies and CASTLE, none of its shows have the ability to repeat well. That's why cancelling BOP was a huge mistake. It has more to do with programming than scheduling. There are 36 weeks in regular season so if you can't get 10 extra airings of your shows, you're going to be in trouble.

ReplyDeleteREvenge earned a 1.3 last night. Not as bad as it looked earlier. It tied Nashville this week. The difference between those 2 is that the former had football to deal with as competition.

ReplyDeleteWhat the hell, Revenge?! The extreme instability of the show's ratings this season defies logic. Last week it only took a minimal hit from the Golden Globes, Downton Abbey and having a dreadful lead-in, this week it suddenly sinks to only a tenth above its series low. Now I've once again gotten anxious about what will happen when it moves to 10pm.

Yeah, I was preparing myself for a 0.9 or something like that. Berman really scared the hell out of many people here, but Revenge is a show with a floor; I can't see the show going any lower than that 1.3 (which faced a 15.3 or something like that)
ReplyDeleteWell, the Golden Globes scored a 6.4, and the game scored a 15.4 head on against Revenge, so I say the show took the hit like a champ
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point, I should've waited to see the game's numbers vs the Globes's before getting worried. With THAT kind of competition, it's definitely no big deal to drop 3 tenths.
ReplyDeleteI hope that when the show comes back in March for the remainder of the season, it's not up against anything too major... especially since its lead-in, the new show Resurrection, doesn't look like it's going to do well.
I think it got one 1.2 this season, but don't quote me on that.
ReplyDeleteWell Revenge has proved it can do kind of well on its own; the 1.6 last week was against a huge 6.4 with virtually no lead in and it will never see such competition in the 10PM timeslot (or at least I think so), so I think the lack of good lead in won't hurt the show, but it certainly won't hurt if Resurrection is succesful

ReplyDeleteThe Following half-hours are the biggest tune-out since Smash, I guess Richard Sherman is more interesting than Joe Carroll's dumb "ressurection".
Revenge is the little show that could, eh? They have pitted it against every behemoth possible, from The Walking Dead to the Grammys to the Golden Globes to Sunday Night Football, and it somehow hangs in there. Like Emily, you just can't keep Revenge down. :)
