This table shows the early overnight ratings. These ratings are normally adjusted later in the day when all the ratings have been consolidated to take into account any local preemptions and/or overruns. You can find all the final adjusted numbers in our Ratings Database. (See the About section below for details about ratings)
The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

Thursday 1/16/14 Metered Markets
“American Idol” Dominates, but Cannot Top an Encore of “The Big Bang Theory”
Household
Rating/Share
Fox 8.3/13
CBS 4.7 8
ABC 2.6/ 4
NBC 2.2/ 4
CW 1.8/ 3
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Thursday 1/17/13:
CW: +29, CBS: -19, Fox: -20, NBC: -27, ABC: -52
—–
-Winners:
“American Idol” (Fox), “The Big Bang Theory” R (CBS)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“The Taste” (ABC), “Community” (NBC), “Parks and Recreation” (NBC), “Sean Saves the World” (NBC), “The Michael J. Fox Show” (NBC)
—–
-Ratings Breakdown:
Opposite a night of all repeats on CBS, two-hours of “American Idol” led Fox to an easy Thursday overnight victory. “Idol” averaged an 8.3 rating/13 share from 8-10 p.m., peaking from 9-10 p.m. with an 8.6/13. But, mirroring its Wednesday season-opener, overnight slippage from the year-ago evening (10.4/16 on 1/17/13) was 20 percent. In other words, “Idol” is down, but still very much an option.
At 8 p.m., a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS managed to beat “American Idol” with a 7.8/13 versus a 7.5/12. Next on CBS’ all encore evening was “The Millers” at a 5.1/ 8 at 8:30 p.m. (#2), followed by “The Crazy Ones” (#2: 3.5/ 5), “Two and a Half Men” (#2: 3.6/ 6) and “Elementary” (#1: 4.3/ 7) from 9-11 p.m. Since you cannot judge a show by a repeat, let’s wait and see what happens when CBS is in all originals opposite “American Idol” next week.
Over at ABC, two more hours of cooking competition “The Taste” took a hit opposite “American Idol” with a 2.5/ 4 from 8-10 p.m. Week to week, that was down by 27 percent. At 10 p.m., a repeat of “Shark Tank” in place of canceled drama “The Assets” was third with a 2.7/ 5.
Elsewhere, NBC remained out of the competitive loop with its combination of “Community” (#4: 2.0/ 3), “Parks and Recreation” (#4: 2.1/ 3), “Sean Saves the World” (#4t: 1.9/ 3), “The Michael J. Fox Show” (#5: 1.5/ 2) and “Parenthood” (#2: 2.9/ 5), which could potentially win the 10 p.m. hour among adults 18-49. And The CW populated the night with “The 19th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards,” which finished fifth with a 1.8/ 3 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. For a complete listing of the winners, click on the following: http://tinyurl.com/mmqcges

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Hopefully Community didn't fall too much :S
ReplyDeleteAmazing that an encore TBBT beats AI, but I'd imagine that the latter would win the demo? Right? LOL. I think America is tiring of singing shows. Especially played out singing shows.
ReplyDelete"...and “Parenthood” (#2: 2.9/ 5), which could potentially win the 10 p.m. hour among adults 18-49." Awesome. Let's not get carried away! NBC doesn't need that kind of hope!
That MJF number is really scary. I'm kinda bummed for him.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for the press release: "Parenthood wins the hour among adults 18-49".
ReplyDeleteAt least it's better than a press relase saying: "MJF Show retained 100% from its lead-in".
Michael J Fox and Sean already on Reign's territory.
ReplyDeleteCW has a shot for the third place when they are going to air original programming on thursdays again.
Michael J Fox Show 22 episode order was the biggest mistake of the season.
ReplyDeleteBurn off this and Sean Saves the World on saturdays and put repeats of The Blacklist or SVU at 9pm.
Parenthood is low rated but it's a self-starter, it doubled its lead-in.
I usually like family comedies, and I've heard good things about the pilot, so I'm hoping for the best.
ReplyDeleteOh okay, I get what you were trying so say now.
ReplyDeleteI don't think E is mediocre at all, but Parenthood didn't win, nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteExactly!
