-Ratings Breakdown:
The return of “American Idol” on Fox opened season 13 with a dominant 9.4 rating/15 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m., peaking at 8:30 p.m. with a 9.8/15. While dominance is certainly a positive, “Idol” (now featuring Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr.) dipped year-to-year by 20 percent from an 11.7/18 (on 1/16/13). And that 11.7 overnight rating translated into 17.93 million and a 6.0 rating/16 share among adults 18-49 (according to the live plus same day data).
In week two news, drama “Chicago PD” on NBC, a spin-off of “Chicago Fire,” dropped to a 3.8/ 6 at 10 p.m., which tied “Nashville” on ABC for a distant second in the time period. Comparably, “Chicago PD” dipped by 27 percent from the 5.2/ 9 one week earlier with retention of 88 percent out of the 9:30 p.m. of lead-in “Law & Order: SVU” (4.3/ 7). Comparably, this is only on par with week two of failed fall time period drama “Ironside.” And that 5.2 in the overnights translated into 8.59 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49 (according to the live plus same day data).
Earlier in the evening on NBC was sophomore “Revolution” a 3.2/ 5 at 8 p.m. (#4) into a 4.2/ 7 for aforementioned “SVU” (#4) at 9 p.m.
Over at second-place CBS, encores of sitcoms “Two and a Half Men” (#3: 3.5/ 6) and “The Millers” #3t, 3.1/ 5) occupied the Wednesday 8 p.m. hour into original installments of “Criminal Minds” (#2: 6.8/11) and granddaddy “CSI” (#1: 6.9/12) from 9-11 p.m., which beat competing “Nashville” on ABC and “Chicago PD” on NBC by 86 percent.
In season premiere news, ABC sitcom “Suburgatory” returned with a second-place 4.0 6 in the overnights at 8:30 p.m., which dropped from lead-in “The Middle” (#2: 5.4/ 9 at 8 p.m.) by 26 percent. “Modern Family” was the top draw at 9 p.m., of course, with a third-place 6.5/10 (which will surely rank No. 2 in the time period among adults 18-49). And “Super Fun Night” followed with a fourth-place 3.2/ 5 at 9:30 p.m., which dropped by 51 percent from “Modern Family.” Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.
The CW capped off the evening with “Arrow” at a solid 2.0/ 3 at 8 p.m. (#5), followed by struggling freshman “The Tomorrow People” at a 1.2/ 2 at 9 p.m., which declined by 40 percent from “Arrow.” As a reminder, “The Tomorrow People” is moving to Monday at 9 .m. (out of new drama “Star-Crossed” on March 17). Stepping into the Wednesday 9 p.m. hour on March 19 will be new drama “The 100.”

TTP! C'mon...
ReplyDeleteAnd Chicago PD! I'll have to wait and see the 18-49's but it doesn't look good.
So, around 5.4 for Idol?
ReplyDeleteNo, Revolution! Please don't go below the 1.4 mark in the demo!
ReplyDeleteWow CSI ! Still very strong after 14 years ! We can be sure CBS is going to stick that Criminal Minal and CSI combination next season !
ReplyDeleteOuch for nbc looks like they took the hardest hits
ReplyDeleteWondering how the 10 PM shows did. There were new episodes of Nashville, Chicago PD, CSI, Duck Dinasty and AHS.
ReplyDeleteHow were the overnights for previous episodes?
ReplyDeleteYou can really derive 18 to 49 rating from HH.
ReplyDeleteThis guy really has a problem with TTP.
ReplyDeleteI am guessing mid 1s for Chicago PD.
ReplyDeleteI know, but still...
ReplyDeleteFor all we know, it could get a higher rating than last year.
ReplyDeleteMost likely around 1.4
ReplyDeleteOne thing we can be sure of, however, is that the viewership is down. The only chance is that Idol's skews younger this year than last.
ReplyDelete:( why so low for CPD this show is awesome
ReplyDeleteDisagree.
ReplyDeleteWhat did he say that was "a problem"?
He simply stated facts.
"struggling freshman “The Tomorrow People”"
Everyone agrees that it is struggling.
"which declined by 40 percent from “Arrow.”"
It did declined by 40 percent.
So where is the problem?
I don't agree with the "Loser" part.
ReplyDeleteMarc Berman is big on retention and he isn't very fond of sci-fi shows. I remember early last season he kept saying the CW was wasting Arrow's lead in on Supernatural, which never made sense to me.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you understand what the "Winner" and "Losers" mean do you.
ReplyDeleteWinners are shows that increased / improved their retention out of the previous episode.
Losers, like TTP are for shows that lost audience out of the previous episode.
TTP lost 40% which is huge, so it quite rightly is marked as a Loser.
Berman also tends to have a problem with genre shows and he also bases his winners/losers on the outdated total viewing figures, when everyone knows 18-49 sells.
ReplyDeleteThat is NOT what he bases Winners/Losers on. They are based on RETENTION.
ReplyDeleteagain, he is ranking them based on households and total viewers which, don't determine anything these days. 18-49 DOES. had he waited for those figures and called it a loser, then sure, why not, but this is based on an outdated ranking system that only he uses,,,, and it's rather silly.
ReplyDeleteNope. Reign loses quite a few HH ratings from TVD but he doesn't list it as "Loser".
ReplyDeleteYou really don't get it do you?
ReplyDeleteThese are EARLY Analysis BEFORE the 18-49 are released.
Today it's me who asks what is the big deal. I really like TTP and I wished it was doing better but the show is a failure ratings wise and he didn't even bash it, he simply stated by how much it declined and said that it was moving. He called it struggling but we all know that to be true.. Compared to how he treats (unfairly) Supernatural, today he is pretty well behaved.
ReplyDeleteTOTAL VIEWING RETENTION!and retention has no value to renewal decisions whatsoever. I highly doubt network heads are like....oh this show got 2.4 and the show following got a 1.9, oh man it's not retaining enough...what a loser...
ReplyDeleteI cannot find for last week but for the fall finale it did 3.7 which resulted in a 1.4. The 3.2 doesn't look promising :S Let's pray to all the TV gods that it was just older viewers that declined.
ReplyDeleteActually, it is possible that viewership is up and overnights are down. But that will not happen here.
ReplyDelete"18-49 DOES. had he waited for those figures and called it a loser"
ReplyDeleteyou don't read, do you?
Clearly says had he waited, therefore I am demonstrating I understand this is an early analysis.
it's called context clues.
good day.
Why do you say that?
ReplyDeleteI have a problem with a loser part.
ReplyDeleteHH ratings don't correspond to total viewers.
ReplyDeleteLol i will pray that Suburgatory did well also. At least CW seems stable to last original airings.
ReplyDeleteNot surprising since it had to go up against the season premier of American Idol with new judges. Hopefully, next week will be better....and I am hoping the 7 day rating which apparently calculates the DVR numbers as well will bring it back up. Lots of fans seem to record the show and watch it later in the week.
ReplyDeletethey were up 68 percent year to year...so that's not too bad. Unless repeats aired on this night last year and not original programming.
ReplyDeleteNot just sci-fi, certain shows like Supernatural. He used to be nastier about it, nowadays he calls it veteran and barely acknowledges it at all.
ReplyDeleteWhile it may be good the genere has gotten very stale
ReplyDeleteNBC was all in repeats year to year (January 16, 2013 vs. January 15, 2014)
ReplyDeletehttp://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/01/17/wednesday-final-ratings-criminal-minds-adjusted-up-suburgatory-the-neighbors-adjusted-down/165633/
yikes.
ReplyDeleteHis classifications are based on criteria that doesn't mean anything or are purely random some of the days so I just ignore those parts. Regardless, I tend to agree that TTP has been a loser in most recent airings, sadly.
ReplyDeleteYes, Suburgatory as well. And the CW! I go nuts with the Wednesday ratings ,so many shows to worry about, it's awful!
ReplyDeleteYeah I suppose genre shows would be better description. I followed him for years, over at pifeedback, only occasionally visit Media Insights, and then it's only to get the numbers.
ReplyDeleteYeah lol, Wednesday is the day i worry the most. And a little nervous how the 10 PM show did yesterday, it seemed like every show aired new episodes. And with DD back i worry how it will impact the others.
ReplyDeleteRetention out of Arrow was poor looking at HH ratings therefore it classed as a loser, also if it were truely a winner CW wouldnt be moving it to make room for a new show in the middle of March.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I usually ignore his opinions, but his Supernatural digs were too much back then.
ReplyDeleteactually he is mostly dead on in terms on demo as well Revolution, TTP and Super Fun Night are all likelybased on past numbers likely to do poorly in A18-49 too.
ReplyDeletebut then he isnt going to be wrong either is he? 18-49 wise the 3 he listed under losers will be losers.
ReplyDeletesorry I get that you are probably a fan but it is kind off a loser
ReplyDeleteI actually don't watch any of the 10pms apart from American Horror Story but that one I don't worry about. I also don't worry about Modern Family since it always does well in absolute terms. I worry a LOT about Revolution, also about The Tomorrow People and Suburgatory now and I also worry about Arrow because even though it's 100% safe I want it to do well. Revolution is the show I worry the most on a weekly basis.
ReplyDeleteArrow usually has 2.1, but this week has 2.0. I don't think that's stable. I hope it got at least 0.9.
ReplyDeleteRetention is such a misguided metric. Look at The Millers, it's averaging a 2.8 out of a 5.3. It's retention out of BBT is poor, but that 2.8 makes it the second highest-rated renewable comedy on CBS this season out of seven. It will not be going anywhere, despite losing nearly half of its lead in each week.
ReplyDeleteRetention SEEMS like it might matter when you consider shows like Intelligence with lost vitually half of Mom's demo, but Intelligence will also almost certainly be CBS's lowest rated program of the week. It's not in trouble because it's doing poorly out of Mom. It's in trouble because it's doing poorly, period.
Yes, I KNOW and AGREE :))))))
ReplyDeleteI'm simply explaining how Berman comes up with his Winners and Losers.
People complain about his analysis but simply don't understand what he is basing it on. His analysis based on what is referring to is actually normally very accurate, albeit an out-dated methodology.
Loser, is relative to the network. anything .6 and above is decent for the CW at this time, TTP could very well maintain that. Reign is not a loser when it scores that by his logic.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am not debating whether or not it will or will not be a loser with you. You want to justify, feel free, i hope it works out for you.
I just said I wish he would wait until 18-49 post before declaring one a loser, but he will not, because he goes by retention and HH, an antiquated ranking system.
The overnights measure the household numbers, not the number of viewers. Imagine the following scenario in which there are only 3 houses:
ReplyDelete- House 1 has 5 people
- House 2 has 1 person
- House 3 has 2 people
Imagine for episode X you are watched by House 2 and 3 and for episode Y you are watched just by House 1. Housholds for episode X are 2 and for episode Y are 1, even though viewers for X are 3 and viewers for Y are 5.
How is Arrow not stable though? A 0.1 make such a big difference from being stable to not stable?
ReplyDeleteLikely but not certain. So my argument is why not wait until they are posted before declaring, not if they are.
ReplyDeleteI mean a child is likely to have brown eyes because both his parents have them, but then he comes out with blue eyes because of the recessive gene.
you can't deal in likely or else you just get a bunch of predictions.
That's why it's called "EARLY" analysis
ReplyDeleteSee below troll
ReplyDeletewe understand what he bases it on, or at least I do.
ReplyDeleteI just feel what he bases it on is out-dated. therefore it makes his rankings out-dated.
Well then, why don't you email him and ask him?
ReplyDeleteHe's not going to see your complaints here.
Public forum, about ratings. I thought I was allowed to just simply express my opinion here, even if it does no good. if I am not, this is news to me.
ReplyDeleteYou are but you must have made the same point now several times.
ReplyDeleteWe get it, you don't like someone doing early analysis of the data,. Fine.
I like reading the early analysis.
And who are you to tell someone what they should or should not do?
Start your own site and do your own analysis then.
"And who are you to tell someone what they should or should not do?
ReplyDeleteStart your own site and do your own analysis then."
well, who are you then to tell me what i should or should not do? Practice what you preach.
"And who are you to tell someone what they should or should not do?
ReplyDeleteStart your own site and do your own analysis then."
you call me out about telling people what to do and then you go and do that exact thing....cool beans.
Wow, American Idol dropped almost 25% from last season's premiere.
ReplyDeleteit's a shame, I don't like American Idol but I hate to see the high and mighty fall as it reminds me that Broadcast TV is declining :(
ReplyDeleteChicago PD gets a 1.5, as I guessed. If it doesn't drop much, it could still get renewed.
ReplyDeletePeople are starting to get tired of singing show , there is way too many.
ReplyDeleteWtf at The Middle, Nashville, Revolution :(
ReplyDeletethese ratings are horrific.
ReplyDeleteyay @ SFN equalling the middle and suburgatory!
ReplyDeleteRevolution :( hope this is a one off fluke and adjusts up.
ReplyDeleteNashville and Revolution and The Middle all hit series low.
ReplyDeleteRevolution and Parenthood neck and neck.
ReplyDeleteJust glad Suburgatory was solid
ReplyDeleteRevolution is on the bubble still. Hope for renewal
ReplyDeleteNashville is a goner
1.6 is not "solid".
ReplyDeleteThat's not a good sign.
ReplyDeleteThose ABC ratings, apart from Mordern Family, are ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteNBC took also a hit, Idol is capable of doing this, despite losing almost 1.5 compared to the last premiere.
It is if you look what ABC comedies are scoring.
ReplyDeleteThe Middle is in it's 5th season, Super Fun Night is set to be cancelled, so it wasn't really solid. Plus this is the premiere, it can decline
ReplyDeletethey dropped and it is stable shows it has a loyal audience that would likely follow it to another timeslot away from Modern Family
ReplyDeleteIt will most likely decline with the next episodes.
ReplyDeleteAlso, The Middle has been hitting 2's all season and is in it's 5th season. SFN is most likely to be cancelled.
Oh. Oh. This is really upsetting. American Idol being down doesn't bother me much (there are much better reasons to watch FOX than that show), but it actually took a good chunk out of Revolution and the ABC comedies. That's really surprising.
ReplyDeleteOther random observations:
-Everybody on TVBTN will be piling on Chicago PD for that rating, but that's not a bad drop at all. It's actually a tenth better than what Chicago Fire did in its second episode (1.5 versus a 1.4), and we all know how the latter show turned out. Not to mention that it held all of SVU's audience.
-Every comedy on ABC rated a 1.6 in prelims, save Modern Family, which rated exactly double that number. Eerie.
-I hope either one or both of Revolution and Nashville adjust up, just because both dramas have their fans and it'd be nice to not see them hit new lows.
-American Idol is going to be hitting low 2s by April. Wonder how that'll affect Rake--that show will probably sink or swim on its own.
-I literally watch none of these shows. I'm too emotionally invested in this game.
1.3 still ain't bad for Revolution. It's not GOOD persay, but considering it STILL hasn't hit Smash levels against tougher competition, it's still doing relatively well for the network.
ReplyDeleteTTP get's better with every episode! Come on.
ReplyDeleteAgree ! As much as I am not a fan of idol it sad it gets so much hate. It has had a huge cultural impact. FOX needs to cancel x-factor which in turn will help idol
ReplyDeleteAmerican Idol got a lot more positive reviews than last season, so perhaps it won't fall as hard as last season, so to all those saying "it'll be in low 2's by Spring" hold those bets.
ReplyDeleteAt this point Nashville gets no season 3
ReplyDeleteWaiting for Arrow and TTP's ratings.
ReplyDeleteIt is solid considering it was premiering against American Idol and that it retained the entire audience from The Middle. It's extremely rare to have a .30 comedy growing from its lead-in. Suburgatory did well enough.
ReplyDeleteI am actually thinking it does look better now than in the fall. ABC is exploding everywhere else.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it could be worst especially given what it was facing but I would feel a whole lot better if it was adjusted up and if it didn't hit this level again. I am very worried.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't ABC take this type of hit every year when Idol premieres?
ReplyDeleteLet's hope!
ReplyDeleteBecause I follow Arrow's ratings and I know Arrow has never gotten more than 0.9 18-49 ratings for 2.0 HH ratings, just like it did now.
ReplyDeleteSuburgatory is a returning comedy (so its audiene is less fickle, resulting in less post premiere drop), premiering midseason (meaning its initial airing doesn't have the usual fall inflated viewing elevels),it is premiering on the most competitive Wednesday of the season AND its lead-in its the lowest it has ever been. I highly doubt it falls much lower unless the hit The Middle took is for real.
ReplyDeleteIt can yes, but I am not sure NBC would be better of renewing this instead of Revolution or Parenthood. I say they are all on the same boat right now. The NBC bubble is horrible to figure out!
ReplyDeleteI was hoping Arrow would cross 1's, but still not bad. Glad that TTP is up.

Predictably bad night for almost everyone around!
ReplyDelete- American Idol debuted quite well for the expectations and coming back from the finale is quite an accomplishment. I think it will have a decent season, it will not be another X-Factor like so many people were predicting
- NBC had the most awful drops but last week it was very inflated due to premiere effect and CBS preemptions all around. My poor poor Revolution... I hope it adjusts up and that it can go back up next week. Considering the competition, it could have been worse. SVU is back to its usual level and Chicago PD probably will stick around this level as well. I would consider it firmly on the bubble together with Revolution and Parenthood if it remains there
- ABC also had a bad night with lows all around. I don't think Suburgatory debuted poorly considering it was the most competitive Wednesday of the season and how low the middle was though. The Middle and Modern Family are weaker than they used to be, but still get the job done. Nashville did awful at 10 but I think the collapse of everything else on ABC will save it.
- CBS had an excellent night, as Criminal Minds and CSI continue to be the unsung heroes for the Eye. Criminal Minds didn't blink with the Idol premiere and CSI demolished the 10pm competition.
- Very sad to see Arrow returning lower, but it was against AI's premiere, so it's understandable. Hopefully, an upwards adjustment and an increase next week is in order. I cannot pretend to care about the ratings for TTP because the only ratings that will matter are the Monday ones and I still cannot imagine the show succeeding in that slot.
Yay for TTP rising! Even though it's just 0.1 in the demo and there is a chance it will adjust down ,at least it hasn't fallen against Idol. Let's hope it remains steady or may even get a chance to rise. And then it should hold up on Mondays. Holding my breath!
ReplyDeleteArrow is at a series low in audience, and is down 0.2 in 18-49 from last episode's 1.1. Those numbers are still better than the CW's average though, so I am not that worried.
Thats quite good for CW. Hope Arrow can adjust up. And TTP surprising against Idol :)
ReplyDeleteIt was airing against big premiere of AI, the first airing after being weeks on a break. If you look at the ratings you see that everything was down against Idol. I have faith it was rise again to 1.0. It could even happen in the finals with half hours 0.9/1.0. I hope that CW releases the M18-34 demo to see how Arrow did there.
ReplyDeleteI hope we get that Arrow adjustment. And also one for poor Revolution!
ReplyDeleteCrossing fingers that Arrow adjusts up!
ReplyDeleteLol hope so. Revolution was quite steady in the half hours. And i am glad Arrow actually rose at 8:30
ReplyDeleteAI really affected the ratings for the 8 pm shows, X factor didnt do it when it was airing... 0.9 it`s good for Arrow this season ahs been a constant between 0.9 to 1.1... TTP is steady with 0.6, lets see Reign tonight
ReplyDeleteRevolution could have done a lot worse so a 1.3 isn't that bad.
ReplyDeletewell, at least i was right on this one bit.ly/6fx783jmp
ReplyDeleteI think it will adjust up and I just don't think Idol and TTP share an audience
ReplyDeletewouldn't Chicago Fire and PD be better together like from 9 pm to 11 pm straight? instead of seperation
ReplyDeleteOne good thing for Revolution is that Chicago PD slipped a bunch already. PLUS they say in DETROIT that Revolution was preempted by an televised "auto show" --that sounds promising for an upward adjustment. Can't see a televised auto show doing good at all in the ratings.
ReplyDeleteI hope Chicago PD isn't doomed! I really really love it,
ReplyDeleteIt was also preemted by basketball in some markets btw, according to some guys at TWoP. That's why TTP was adjusted down and why the total audience was so low in the first half an hour. Some of those markets aired Arrow during the 9PM hour.
