The return of “American Idol” on Fox opened season 13 with a dominant 9.4 rating/15 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m., peaking at 8:30 p.m. with a 9.8/15. While dominance is certainly a positive, “Idol” (now featuring Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr.) dipped year-to-year by 20 percent from an 11.7/18 (on 1/16/13). And that 11.7 overnight rating translated into 17.93 million and a 6.0 rating/16 share among adults 18-49 (according to the live plus same day data).
In week two news, drama “Chicago PD” on NBC, a spin-off of “Chicago Fire,” dropped to a 3.8/ 6 at 10 p.m., which tied “Nashville” on ABC for a distant second in the time period. Comparably, “Chicago PD” dipped by 27 percent from the 5.2/ 9 one week earlier with retention of 88 percent out of the 9:30 p.m. of lead-in “Law & Order: SVU” (4.3/ 7). Comparably, this is only on par with week two of failed fall time period drama “Ironside.” And that 5.2 in the overnights translated into 8.59 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49 (according to the live plus same day data).
Earlier in the evening on NBC was sophomore “Revolution” a 3.2/ 5 at 8 p.m. (#4) into a 4.2/ 7 for aforementioned “SVU” (#4) at 9 p.m.
Over at second-place CBS, encores of sitcoms “Two and a Half Men” (#3: 3.5/ 6) and “The Millers” #3t, 3.1/ 5) occupied the Wednesday 8 p.m. hour into original installments of “Criminal Minds” (#2: 6.8/11) and granddaddy “CSI” (#1: 6.9/12) from 9-11 p.m., which beat competing “Nashville” on ABC and “Chicago PD” on NBC by 86 percent.
In season premiere news, ABC sitcom “Suburgatory” returned with a second-place 4.0 6 in the overnights at 8:30 p.m., which dropped from lead-in “The Middle” (#2: 5.4/ 9 at 8 p.m.) by 26 percent. “Modern Family” was the top draw at 9 p.m., of course, with a third-place 6.5/10 (which will surely rank No. 2 in the time period among adults 18-49). And “Super Fun Night” followed with a fourth-place 3.2/ 5 at 9:30 p.m., which dropped by 51 percent from “Modern Family.” Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.
The CW capped off the evening with “Arrow” at a solid 2.0/ 3 at 8 p.m. (#5), followed by struggling freshman “The Tomorrow People” at a 1.2/ 2 at 9 p.m., which declined by 40 percent from “Arrow.” As a reminder, “The Tomorrow People” is moving to Monday at 9 .m. (out of new drama “Star-Crossed” on March 17). Stepping into the Wednesday 9 p.m. hour on March 19 will be new drama “The 100.”
