Metered Market Thursday Ratings
Clean Sweep for CBS; “The Assets” Flounders on ABC

Thursday 1/09/13
Metered Market Results

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 7.7/12
ABC 2.9/ 5
NBC 2.4/ 4
Fox 1.6/ 3
CW 0.7/ 1

———-

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Thursday 1/10/13:
Fox: -11, CBS: -18, NBC: -20, ABC: -49, CW: -59

———-

-Winners:
“The Big Bang Theory” (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Community” (NBC), “Parks and Recreation” (NBC), “Sean Saves the World” (NBC), “The Michael J. Fox Show” (NBC), “The Assets” (ABC), “Parenthood” (NBC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a clean Thursday overnight sweep for CBS with its line-up of blockbuster “The Big Bang Theory” (12.3 rating/19 share), which topped the night as always, “The Millers” (8.0/12), “The Crazy Ones” (6.0/ 9), “Two and a Half Men” (6.5/10) and sophomore “Elementary” (6.6/11). Dominance is certainly a positive thing, of course. But the Eye net expanding to a two-hour Thursday sitcom block has resulted in noticeable erosion with the combination of “The Crazy Ones” and “Two and a Half Men,” in particular, down by 36 percent from year-ago occupant “Person of Interest” (9.7/15 on 1/10/13).

Jim Persons was at the Winter Tour yesterday on a session for his upcoming original HBO movie, “The Normal Heart.”

In the distant No. 2 spot was ABC as a result of cooking competition “The Taste,” which scored a modest 3.3/ 5 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., followed by week two of new drama “The Assets” at a last-place 2.2/ 4 at 10 p.m. Week to week, “The Assets” slipped by 15 percent from its already DOA opening 2.6/ 4 on Jan. 2. And that translated into a mere 3.77 million viewers and a 0.7 rating/2 share among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data). The 49 percent erosion for ABC was a result of dramas “Last Resort,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” airing on the year-ago evening.

Next was NBC with its low-rated combination of sitcoms “Community” (#3: 2.2/ 4), “Parks and Recreation” (#3: 2.2/ 3), “Sean Saves the World” (#3: 2.3/ 3) and “The Michael J. Fox Show” (#3: 2.1/ 3) from 8-10 p.m., followed by “Parenthood” at a second-place 2.9/ 5 in the 10 p.m. hour. Despite the obvious lack of interest, NBC was up by nine percent week to week. Regardless, the network will need to revamp the entire evening next season.

Will sentimental favorite Michael J. Fox be named Best Actor – TV Comedy or Musical at the “Golden Globe Awards” on Sunday? Click on the following to put in your picks at the annual TVMI contest http://tvmediainsights.webs.com/2014gg.html

Elsewhere, Fox populated this second Thursday in January with back-to-back repeats of freshman drama “Sleepy Hollow,” which scored an average 1.6/ 3 from 8-10 p.m. And The CW aired encores of “The Vampire Diaries” and “Reign,” which each averaged a 0.7/ 1.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. 1. I don't get why and how TBBT is doing so well...it's seriously mind bending. It never gets a single laugh out of me and gets me more startled and offended than amused

  2. Devon Maxwell-Pierce10 January 2014 at 15:00

Same. I have so many friends who adore that show, and it's just not for me. At least it's not 2.5 Men, which is a 30 minute long bad sex joke.

    ReplyDelete
  3. So stop looking. No more problems

    ReplyDelete
  4. abc is really missing grey and scandal right now

    ReplyDelete
  5. I don't think they were released. You may find them somewhere else, try googling.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I find it amusing and funny, you don't. Guess it's not for everybody.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Devon Maxwell-Pierce10 January 2014 at 15:12

Yeah, tried that, lol. But thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I feel that way about a lot of so-called comedies, however TBBT is one that clicks with me. Each to their own I guess.

lets not write community off just yet. we still need to see how it fares with no new big bang the next two weeks. maybe they could just swap it with parks and rec to the 8:30 slot against the millers. I personally watch both big bang and community but I watch community live because I know the big bang theory will be in syndication for the next 100 years and that community may not be syndicated long enough to add this new batch of episodes to it's rotation.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yeah, Modern Family for one is a comedy that I never found funny. In fact, I can't stand the show.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Parks & Rec up for it's 100th episode.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I dont think a move to 8.30 will help it

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hopefully both Parks and Community can stick at a 1.4, super happy to see them both go up

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yay for Community being up a bit. I would already be happy with not down anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wow, The Assets should be below 0.5 when it reaches it's final episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  16. sixseasonsandamovie10 January 2014 at 16:16

Season high for Parks and good for Community (considering the circunstances, this is the first time since october that a NBC comedy hit a 1.4).

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sean got a 1.4 in November, actually.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nicolas Mailloux10 January 2014 at 16:20

we'll find out next week when it doesn't have the big bang theory in it's way. you can't put a show with the same target audience against a juggernaut like big bang and expect a runaway success. I was hoping for better numbers considering community is now syndicated and can be discovered by more people.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow Big Bang. Looks like I am not the only one who felt last week's was the best episode of the season

    ReplyDelete
  20. Huge for TBBT, highest rating since it's double episode premiere. I guess the cliffhanger at the end of last week helped.

    ReplyDelete
  21. sixseasonsandamovie10 January 2014 at 16:21

Thanks, I forgot the day it aired after The Voice.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The cliffhanger helped the ratings as well, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good for Community and Parks! That 1.4 looks like it will save them both :D

    ReplyDelete
  24. sixseasonsandamovie10 January 2014 at 16:24

Considering that repeats of Grey's, Scandal or Shark Tank could pull the same ratings as The Assets and Killer Women, will ABC pull those shows off the schedule or stay with them untl the end of the Olympics?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nicolas Mailloux10 January 2014 at 16:24

it's ironic that people complain that abc hasn't given them a gritty spy drama ascetic for agents of s.h.i.e.l.d. but when they create a miniseries with the ascetic they where clamoring for absolutely no one watches it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. From what I've read, it isn't really well done (quality wise). And ABC gave it zero promotion.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah I agree.

The funny thing is that CBS, which doesn't actually really need to put its shows in hiatus against Idol, will let them rest next week, even though TBBT would absolutely murder AI. This really contrasts with what the dumb network does by airing its shows against award season et all AND deciding to premiere Suburgatory next week against the premiere of Idol instead of yesterday when the competition was non existent.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't see the point of pulling them. The repeat ratings would be on par (maybe slighly higher, but nothing too major) and most likely all the episodes have already been paid for since it's 8 episodes only for each (probably they are even all produced already).

    ReplyDelete
  29. For Community, it's a very significant difference from what it used to do which was to always fall big after premiere, so this is great news indeed. The good news is that next week it doesn't face AI. I know it will face Idol instead but not only will Idol be a bit lower rated but it will also (hopefully) have less crossed competition. Here's to hoping.

    ReplyDelete
  30. One 1.4 is not gonna save them. They are still bubble shows. And that will stay till the end of the season. The only real competition they had was BBT. I think when the CW shows and American Idol return it could suffer more.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Remember that next week, even though Big Bang won't be there in its full force (it will still be there in repeat mode, effectively scoring probably the double of what Community can do), there will be the second part of the Idol premiere, which will still be very big I think, despite what everyone thinks of the show now. It will be an even more competitive night than last night when all is said and done or at least the same, even though I expect Community to gain a bit from the less compatible competition (i.e. there is probably more crossed audience with TBBT than with AI)

    ReplyDelete
  32. They are going to air the same number of episodes of those shows they would be airing otherwise, so if anything you can only say that ABC is missing Grey's and Scandal repeats, which I don't think it's even very accurate in the case of Grey's (we have yet to see how the taste did last week, but last week it surely outperformed a Grey's repeat)

    ReplyDelete

  34. It takes just one look at how SSTW and MJFS do and compare it to Community and Parks; it's a no brainer. CW has never really affected the other networks, even when TVD rates high, it doesn't share an audience with the other networks, American Idol will probably premiere lower than last year, and thus it wont be as much competition as it was last year. As long as they hold on near to that 1.4 (it could be even a 1.2 or a 1.1) they will make it through next year, because NBC can't cancel everything

    ReplyDelete
  35. Devon Maxwell-Pierce10 January 2014 at 16:35

    Elementareeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Broke the 1.8 ceiling!

    ReplyDelete
  36. The Crazy Ones is also up to tie best number since week 2!! This is a very good night for me. But the entire CBS lineup looks very high to me, were there preemptions? If not, they are clearly collecting the gains from the absence of the ABC duo.

    ReplyDelete
  37. great for The Crazy Ones, so happy!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Nicolas Mailloux10 January 2014 at 16:35

lets hope your right about community.
    six seasons and a movie!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yay, The Crazy Ones picked up so much. Great night for CBS overall.

    ReplyDelete
  40. that's what I thought as well, The Millers up 5 tenths, TCO up 4 tenths is slightly unusual. But I hope it wasn't pre-empted

    ReplyDelete
  41. The whole CBS line up looks pretty good as of right now; first time this season Elementary hits 2? Good for them :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Devon Maxwell-Pierce10 January 2014 at 16:36

Third time. First since 2x02, though!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Also Two and a Half Men and even Elementary. They literally had no competition last night so it does make some sense, but I dunno, seems a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ok, still it has been quite some time, that's very good for the show!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Devon Maxwell-Pierce10 January 2014 at 16:39

I'll take it. I'm going to go bask in the glow of a 2+ for a little while.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Couldn't agree with you more. Individually I find some of those actors funny but as a show its just annoying. Then a comedy like TBBT comes along and I very rarely am not laughing out loud or at the very least grinning like an idiot. Its what I call intelligent humour rather than toilet trash humour that so many others are all about.

    ReplyDelete
  47. For what it's worth, the same thing happened in season 3, where the second episode grew a tenth from a 1.7 for the season premiere. Strangely, it always drops huge amounts after good premieres but rises after bad ones.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I was just thinking, oh no American Idol premieres next week and it could affect TCO then I realised that thank god AI is on from 8-9pm on Thursdays.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think lack of competition+the fact last week people may not have watched because they didn't know they were on so early in the year might have caused the more than regular increases

    ReplyDelete
  50. Its 2 hours during auditions.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Very glad for that too, I still watch idol out of interest, but I would hate for a great show like TCO to be affected negatively.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeah, ABC does make stupid decisons.

    ReplyDelete
  53. oh no! well hopefully it wont have too much of an impact.

    ReplyDelete
  54. This is exactly how I feel about TBBT.

    ReplyDelete
  55. TCO is taking a break for two weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  56. oh right, that's good :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. TVBTN isn't reporting any preemptions for CBS, that's good.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Even if AI is premiering last week, with TBBT out of the picture I can see Community holding its ratings or even going higher; every week it has aired with no TBBT original it has gone up

    ReplyDelete
  59. I just remembered, AI's result shows have been cut to 30 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I disagree with the part that it's obvious that they need to keep a comedy or two. If they cut the comedy hours down to 1 in the fall, which is a serious option, they wouldn't need a backup veteran comedy (they can just have premiere a new one in midseason if the fall ones fail). They could decide to keep them as replacements, yes, but they don't "need to". Another thing I disagree is that I think you (and this is a general thing, not just you IMO) are undervaluing Idol. Even at low 3s, the show is very serious competition, little thing in broadcast rate that high. Especially in opening weeks it will still be very impressive and be on the levels of the voice most likely, which is very serious for the other nets.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm just saying American Idol is not the fierce competition it used to be; I will not be surprised if it premieres to 4s and then fall to low 2s. The show has seen severe declines year to year, so if Community withstood it last season, I can't see why it won't this year with AI having less ratings.
For episode 2 last season Community got a 1.2, now it got a 1.4 so I think it's on a better spot than it was last season. AI premiere will be big, but I don't see it doing anything better than a 5, which is what TBBT usually does and it won't air next week

    ReplyDelete
  62. But Community wasn't really tested this year yet. It aired against BBT and the Taste, i wouldn't say big competition. The whole CBS line is also up against limited competition. That doesn't change the fact that the sitcoms, not counting BBT, still will continue to be bubble shows. When all the show from the 8 PM slot come back then we can really discuss the fate for Community. Parks already hit a 1.0 this season and it isn't even Spring yet. It will all come down if the ratings overweigh the cost of these 2 shows. They both already sold in syndication so they don't need more episodes.
The other 2 comedies on Thursday on NBC are dead already.

    ReplyDelete
  63. disqus_BLvd5NQY3F10 January 2014 at 17:05

Elementary goes up over 2 since episode2

    ReplyDelete
  64. BBT isn't big competition?! The show scores over 5s in a weekly basis!
AI did about 2s at the end of last season; it will do 4s at best in the premiere and then go down.
TBBT won't be on next week, so Community will face a 4 instead of a 5, which is a huge difference

    ReplyDelete
  65. But it was the only competition. And scoring a 1.4 against BBT is ok. But do you really think that against AI, BBT and VD it will still be scoring a 1.4. I personally don't believe its possible. Community is a more male skewing show and that has always been their saving grace. But it can also be hurt by Thursday sport events.

    ReplyDelete
  66. For me its all comes down to what kind of competition a show faces. The 1.2 Community scored on its 2nd airing was on valentines day. And it was airing against all their regular competition.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I agree with you, yes, I kind of misread your original post as if you were dismissing Idol lower yet still huge numbers, my bad. However, note that TBBT being in repeats is far from being the same as not airing (I am assuming it will air a repeat next week and not be actually preempted for another program) considering that its repeats always do high 2s when repeated on its first-run slot.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yes, you're right. And I had forgotten that last week there was the big football game on.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I liked the premiere last week, so it's all subjective I guess. Hopefully it will be able to withstand Idol well enough.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Enjoy it, I know how much you suffer every week with your show ;)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah I just checked out the same.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yes, that's true, but we still have no information on when will Surviving Jack premiere. I think that show looks good, we'll see if FOX stands behind it. It should as it needs comedy blood badly. At least it has a better chance than poor Enlisted, which I also think looks good.

    ReplyDelete
  73. They cut the episode order to 8 for scheduling reason) so I think it will premiere with the first results show.

    ReplyDelete
  74. And next week it will air against only American Idol, so that's not as much competition as it had last year, ergo it should be ok. I could be wrong, of course, but I seriously doubt AI's premire this year will do any better than TBBT. If Community aired against AI's premiere and an original TBBT, then I would get worried

    ReplyDelete
  75. Ah maybe. I don't watch AI so I don't actually know when is it that the Thursday shows turn into results show. When is that?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Well AI is very big in the female demo and since most show wont be airing next week, it could pickup a very big audience. I don't think people will flee to watch The Taste or the Critics Choice Awards on CW. I also think that AI will have a big drop when the regular competition returns. Thats why i think its hard to say anything now with half shows on a break.

    ReplyDelete
  77. CW has beaten NBC last season a few times and a time or two already this season.this season at 8/7 and this season beat abc at8/ 7 pm (OUATIW) with VD.Heck ,even Reign at 0.6 i/0.7 is s close to MJF /SStW who are at 0.8 and if they fall any more, and Reign stays stable or grows again will tie or beat them.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Reign and TVD getting the same in repeats is good right¿?

WOAO TBBT is the monster of the night!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Community's main audience is not female, but male, so I'm a bit skeptical in how much AI will impact it

    ReplyDelete
  80. CW skews a different audience than NBC; even if it rates higher as a whole, TVD will mostly skew female viewers, while Community skews male. It's apple and oranges, the fact that NBC doesn't do that well has little to do with The CW, which appeals to a whole different audience. They got the audience that NBC comedies aren't targeting anyway

    ReplyDelete
  81. I agree that Community excels in the male young demo. On the other hand AI is a more female skewing show, but it can also on occasions match Community in the M18-34 demo. And Community is more vulnerable when airing against sport events. I am not saying AI alone will make an impact to NBC comedies. But when all shows will be airing original program, it will hurt Community and Parks. And even though BBT will be a repeat next week you can bet it will score between a 2.4 - 3.0 rating.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Just picked a thread at random but, OK, you have officially killed me with Community. This show has overtaken TBBT as the best comedy I've seen in the last decade. Just finishing season 3 tonight and goddamn, even though a little weaker than 1 and 2, (that 2 part finale for season 2 absolutely blew my damn mind) I'm still just busting at every episode. What a 3 day ride I've had so far. You genius for recommending this to me.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Ahah thanks, I am glad you are liking it so much. This week's episode was my favorite in a looong time, I am so happy with it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yeah I'm with you there. I never found it funny either. I love TBBT though. And for 2.5 Men, I know Charlie Sheen left, etc. It's still a really funny show.
