NEW YORK – January 30, 2014 – They’re back – and shark happens! Syfy and The Asylum today announced that Ian Ziering and Tara Reid will reprise their roles as Fin and April in the eagerly awaited Sharknado sequel, Sharknado 2: The Second One, which begins filming in New York February 13.
Anthony Ferrante will once again direct a screenplay by Thunder Levin, who also wrote Sharknado, the iconic pop culture sensation which chainsawed its way through social media last summer.
In Sharknado 2: The Second One, a freak weather system turns its deadly fury on New York City, unleashing a Sharknado on the population and its most cherished, iconic sites – and only Fin and April can save the Big Apple.
Sharknado 2 is scheduled to premiere on Syfy in July.
Said Thomas Vitale, Executive Vice President, Programming and Original Movies, Syfy: “Sharknado was an extraordinary ‘perfect storm’ which captured the attention of movie fans across the globe. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about Sharknado! By reassembling the creative team – and dropping sharks onto New York’s iconic sites – we’re unleashing yet another ‘fin’ wave of shark-mania.”
Added Paul Bales, COO, The Asylum: “We’re thrilled to be able to bring back the talent that made Sharknado a hit. Can lightning strike twice? I don’t know, but it’s a scientific fact that you’re more likely to be killed by lightning than by a shark. This film will have lightning and sharks, so that’s got to count for something.”
The Asylum and Syfy have struck a deal with legendary casting director Mike Fenton and his partner Ann Frederick, of Fenton-Frederick Casting, to supervise cameo casting.

ReplyDeleteI would appreciate it if you would not be so patronising in your posts. I am not stupid and I realise that it is cheaper to make rubbish TV, but that is not an excuse. Good drama series are being cancelled because it's cheaper for crappy reality shows and decent tv movies not being allowed to be made. It's also not fair on the actors, as you stated crappy actors are being cast so this means decent more established ones are unable to get work.
ReplyDeleteDecent TV = more expense but it also = more viewers and better ad revenue.
Crappy TV = cheaper but less viewers which = less ad revenue.
It is the start of a slippery slope when viewers start being prepared to settle for second best as this is what the stuidos will give us and soon there willl not be any decent shows on TV.
Actually Sharknado completely wipes your ad revenue thing away, Sharknado had a HUGE internet buzz surrounding it making it more profitable than any syfy original movie before.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry if I sounded patronising to you but in the end you made it sound as if it was such an easy decision to go for a costly Stargate movie instead of a new franchise.
Is it unfair towards the actors ? I don't know. If they wouldn't charge anything and step in as producers taking more risk themselves I'd agree with you but I don't see any of them do that (you can produce something as an actor by simply not charging anything and putting your worth into it). At least not as far as I know.
And 'crappy' TV sounds a bit downgrading doesen't it ? Sharknado was stupid on purpose and had more heart behind it than many big budget productions. There's the misconception going on that low-budget syfy/Asylum flicks are mere cash ins and while at times this is fully accurate there're a few projects of passion among that as well.
Sharknado is hillarious and has found its fanbase, it now IS a succesfull franchise and deserves recognition just like Stargate does.
And your 'second best' line is a bit taking its mouth too full. I've seen 3 Stargate movies. 2 of wich I enjoyed, the third I felt like kicking out in the dust for being a huge pile of crap (Ark of Truth). I can safely say that I enjoyed Sharknado a lot more than Ark of Truth.

ReplyDeletebecause these would cost more money than Sharknado wich is a low budget production.
ReplyDeletePeople rarely take into account that such movies cost a sh*tload of money alone due to licensing fees, location permits, actor salery, crew and VFX.
Sharknado can have a crappy cast, horrible CGI and can be shot on the cheapest possible locations because the audience knows what it's in for.
Imagine they'd do another Stargate flick. They'd have to get Tapping, Browder, Shanks, Anderson etc., some good VFX artists, a fairly solid crew and some great locations to create the experience you'd want.
To make the whole thing more clear: Stargate - The Ark of Truth cost about 7 mil bucks while Sharknado cost merely two million
