Honestly, I need context. I wasn't a fan of the 11th Doctor's costume until I was able to put personality to outfit, which of course made me fall in love with it. That said, this is a bit plain. Nothing that screams out anything that'll stand out, i.e. the bow tie or the trainers/trench coat. Still, I'll wait until the 12th Doctor's had a couple episodes before I make any final judgments.
My first thought was, "kind of plain," sort of Third Doctor without the ruffles, but it's growing on me already. The red jacket lining really should do good things in action scenes, the collar is distinctive, and overall the effect is pretty sharp, with just a touch of subtle pizazz. I look forward to seeing how it fits with his performance and personality in the role.
And hey, nothing wrong with a bit of resemblance to Three, especially after his predecessor based parts of his look on Two!
Interesting, how responses differ. To me, this actually IS the cleaner, more modern direction for the Doctor, with a very Pertwee-meets-Eccleston vibe.
Besides the black khakis, I don't see anything I'd call modern. If anything, the getup is mostly retro. Anyway, regardless of any stylistic classification, I do like those boots.
Well, the jacket and button up shirt, but no tie, is pretty current, (at least where I live), and the cut of that lapel feels almost hipster, but a lot of newer fashion does play off retro styles, lightly tweaked, in any case. And given that it's the Doctor, that retro/modern blend seems especially fitting!
(Agreed on the boots: I'm kind of loving those chunky, Dr. Marten soles with his otherwise very sleek look. Part wingtip, part combat boot... Looks like Twelve is going for dapper AND practical.)
Actually, I just came across Capaldi's quote about the costume, and it hits kind of those same lines:
"He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100% rebel time lord."
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
not a fan... looks to similar to 3rd dr

ReplyDeletelooks like a vampire or a magician, but it could just be the pose.
ReplyDeleteI really like the splash of red, I think it will look great on screen
ReplyDeleteAbracadabra! Will the sonic screwdriver have a makeover to look like a wand?
ReplyDeleteI was going to say stage magician as well but I also think the pose has some influence over that.
ReplyDeleteI've been hoping they'd do something more simple and modern again like Eccleston's Doctor so it looks as though I'll have to keep waiting on that one.
ReplyDeleteI Like The Costume, But I'm Just Not Sure I Like The Guy In It.
ReplyDeleteI love it!! PC's costume is classic and sleek. I think it fits the character and the actor perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI like it- I like that it's old fashioned and has some flair to it.
ReplyDeletejust type 'Malcom Tucker' into youtube and you have your proof that he's awesome
