Another week, another superb episode of Beauty and the Beast. In fact, this one was even better than last week's fascinating "Ancestors." The strange and wonderful appeal of this show is that even as I completely disagree with many of the characters' decisions (more an issue with earlier Season 2 episodes) and can't quite get my mind around what the writers could possibly be thinking with certain angles (i.e. the entire character of Gabe), I'm constantly laughing, having my heart broken and put back together, shouting tirades at the screen, and thoroughly enjoying it. This is the mark of truly great t.v. anyway you slice it.
"Held Hostage" had some awesome twists and turns that finally brought VinCat to a more positive forward momentum. Meanwhile, the affair of the necklace and those who want it for mysterious and nefarious reasons continues to grow more intriguingly complex. Here's what went down and what I thought!
I had to give out immediate kudos to BatB for using one of my favorite songs, the fantastically angsty "Stay Away" by Charli XCX, to open this episode. It really got me thinking because while I had previously thought this song referred to a darker and more damaging relationship than VinCat, there are aspects of the lyrics that apply perfectly to the dynamic between them. It deals with overwhelming and consuming love and the desperate desire to shake that love off to survive another day on one's own terms. This does speak to the difficult yet epic origins, powerful emotions, and currently troubled nature of the VinCat connection...and when VinCat first met, he did tell her to stay away. Since their break-up this season, it's been Cat's turn to try and push her love for Vincent away...clearly, an impossible task.
"You choke my throat
With words of wonder
You make it hard to breathe
Your love's so cold
Just like an arrow
Pierced through my skin I bleed
I knew you were no angel
But god, what did I do?"*
Cat was irritated to see pictures of Vincent and Tori in the newspapers as they paraded the necklace around to attract those who may have more information on it. She met up with Gabe to plan a surprise birthday for Tess, and her boss / potential b.f. was curious about Cat's residual anger towards Vincent. Did it mean she was "unresolved" about her ex? (Yes.) Cat then went off on an explanation composed of complete lies that cracked me up: "I'm over Vincent. I can't believe I was ever with someone like that." The level of self-persuasion Cat was trying to impose on herself with these words formed a theme that continued throughout the episode.
Even though Cat claimed she was done with Vincent (her favorite topic, haha) and only wanted the necklace because of its ties to her own past, and even though she put the mega-big-eyes / lean-in-for-the-kiss moves on Gabe, he wasn't having it. It's moments like this that make Gabe's "changed man" persona and his feelings for Cat seem so genuine that he must be a total genius if he's actually been evil the whole time. I am more inclined to suspect that Gabe is a character torn between good and evil at all times, but which way is the pendulum swinging now? For almost the first time all season, "Held Hostage" raised some questions about Gabe's intentions that made the blend of sweet and suspicious in him more remarkable than ever.
We got a fabulous face-off - the first of many in this episode - when Gabe, Cat, and Tess showed up to get the necklace from Vincent and Tori. The teams were divided almost evenly (J.T., where were you this week?) but Cat ended up arresting Tori after she and Vincent wouldn't give up the necklace.
It was awesome to finally get a couple of feisty head-on confrontations between Cat and Tori this week. As annoying as Tori often is, at least she's a fun character to have around in situations like this. Cat was sassily priceless and quite correct in telling the she-beast that Vincent's taking Tori out on the town to draw out dangerous villains does not equal a date.
Tess got some great quips in as well, such as suggesting that Tori avoid ending up in a lab, "you know, like E.T. at the end of the movie?" In fact, just overall, Tess was on fire this week. She had numerous hilarious and poignant moments in the episode that underscored what a fabulous character she is.
A motley and violent crew of baddies showed up to hold everyone in the station hostage and steal the necklace. As officers circled outside to try and help, Gabe discussed the problem with Vincent, who acted as if he only cared about getting the necklace and wasn't concerned with saving the lives of the hostages. "Catherine was right," Gabe noted, "you are unrecognizable." But once Gabe indicated that Catherine was involved...
"Is she in there?" Vincent asked, practically apparating into the station at the mere suggestion of Cat's being in danger. I loved the abrupt switch from Vincent's veneer of insensitive selfishness to leaping into the fray to save Cat.
Meanwhile, Cat had to try and get Tori to beast out in order to help with the hostage situation, amusingly swapping her gentle, keep-the-peace tone to an aggressive one to help Tori get in the mood: "I hate you, and you and Vincent don't stand a chance." That was some satisfying dialogue.
Gabe didn't mince words in telling Cat that Vincent obviously still cares about her and went rushing into the building when he heard she was in trouble. But then he followed that up by telling Catherine that when the current peril was over, he wanted to be with her: "I'm in." I think the first thing you said kind of undercut the other idea, Gabe.
Cat ran into Vincent after escaping from her cell, but the two quickly began to argue, once again about "that stupid necklace." More than a plot device, the necklace has come to represent everything that's come between VinCat, which amazingly happens to also be the same everything that will always bind them inextricably together.
Vincent had an awesome line in this scene that seemed a bit like a direct message to the show's fans who have been disheartened with the changes in him this season - "You wanna know what happened to 'The Old Vincent'? He was deceived and hurt by almost everyone in your family tree." It was terrific to have an outright acknowledgement that the Season 2 Vincent is different from the one we met in Season 1, and to have him give some explanation of the pain that sent him down that dark path.
"Do you remember what I said
That first time we met
Stay away, why couldn't you stay away?
I never needed anyone
But now that you are gone
Stay away, won't you just stay away?"*
Still under gunpoint with the other hostages, Tess was having a fairly unfun birthday, also being semi-interrogated about Tori's beast-out by the rather emotionally manipulative Agent Landon. I adored the way that after listening to the profiler's cutting words about her enthusiasm for birthdays representing some kind of inferiority complex, Tess came back with some tart retorts at the end of the episode. Nobody puts Tess in the corner, even if the villains did eat her cheesecake.
Poor Tess then had a gun to her head while Catherine feverishly whispered a plea for Vincent to channel his "Old Vincent" self and rescue her best friend. Of course, Vincent later said he didn't actually hear Cat when she was "like, praying" to him, but what a beautifully intense scene and lovely performance by Kristin Kreuk.
"I climbed a wall
To touch your shadow
I hear you call for me
But you're not there
You're just an echo
Why did you fall for me?"*
When Cat called Gabe back and told him about her plans to shut off all the lights in the station, his hesitance and/or runaround in telling her where the breakers were was weird. He's always portrayed himself as pretty much entirely obedient to Cat (to the point where she's almost his boss), but here he acted sketchy. Of course, whether or not Gabe made a sincere reinvention at the start of Season 2, he'll always be sketchy and suspicious in motives because of the way he was in Season 1.
The apparent changes to Gabe's character this season reminded me of the similar switch around that happened with Dr. Peter Burns on the O.G. Melrose Place. After trying to kill Amanda, Peter was brought back the next season and transitioned into a man who was more of a moral gray area, and quite often good, rather than a downright villain. With the character of Gabe, are BatB's writers similarly changing a character for the convenience of the story in having him become a good guy, or is Gabe just a total fake? For me, it's a win either way. I enjoy Gabe whether he's playing nice or plotting wicked schemes...I think the time has come, however, for the reality to be revealed, and I suspect we'll see this solved soon.
What a gorgeous VinCat scene we got when the two met up once more and he protected her from a sniper's bullet. "You turned the lights off," Vincent acknowledged to Cat, since her doing this had helped him immensely. "You didn't leave," Cat replied, showing that he's failed to disappoint her for the first time in several episodes. Something - a remnant of trust and a flicker of the love that still burns between them - was reborn in that moment. The chemistry between Cat and Vincent as they stared at each other was amazing.
This peaceful moment led them to a truce and a decision to perhaps even work together on the issue of the necklace. Vincent even acknowledged that he and Cat are possibly "meant to" unite in this task. Why else, after all, would each of their pasts have such strong ties to the necklace, and hence to one another? It's destiny not only in the sense of each of their journeys of self-discovery, but also for their journey back to one another.
While telling Gabe that she's not ready to be with him (I get a sense she's never going to be ready for that, especially given the sliceable tension as Vincent hovered around and resisted an invite to Tess' party), Cat also explained that she now understands that she can't be too hard on herself for having loved Vincent. Seeing a glimpse of The Old Vincent that night reminded her of the positive aspects of that love. Now that some of her flimsy self-deceit has ebbed away and she and Vincent are back on friendlier terms, VinCat seem much closer to a long-awaited reunion.
We got a sneaky little peek of the supposed mere drunk vagrant from the station handing the stolen necklace off to a mysterious person in a car. Who was it? I am not sure when this scene is meant to be timed and if it overlaps with Gabe being back with Cat and Tess at the station...or not. If it isn't a perhaps morally relapsed Gabe, who else might the perpetrator be?
Who do you think is behind this theft of the necklace? What did you think of this week's VinCat developments? Share your thoughts on this episode in the comments!
#BATB THE BEST SHOW!!<3
ReplyDeleteIndeed, Beauty and the Beast is awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteTerrific, review again this week for a pretty awesome episode, could Vincat be on their way back to happy ever after? I hope so I'm doing all I can do without pokeing my eyes out, with them continuing to shove Gabe and Cat as a couple,my goodness Vincent isn't the only one who has or had amnesia they forgot, that he was the one responsible for a lot of the trouble they're in, redemption please, give her anyone else to make V jealous, but Gabe come on, sorry I vented again lol, a Thanks for your review!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading and sharing your thoughts! After this episode, I really think Cat/Gabe has been somewhat pushed aside as a possibility. VinCat definitely seem to be on the way to a reunion. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I totally expect to see Bob back again! I agree with your suspicions about Gabe; something's weird with his recent behavior especially. Thanks for the nice comments :)
ReplyDeleteYou were right there are many fans who question the character of Gabe in this season.I hope that he really has changed and has no ulterior motives but that will remain to be seen.
ReplyDeleteThis was ,to me, the best episode so far in S2. Everyone put in a great performance especially Nina and Kristin. Jay is also playing his part so well that we were all getting frustrated with his character over the past few episodes.
( Didn't realize the depth of betrayal that he felt)
J.T.was missed but next week is supposed to be his turn &. I am looking forward to the return of the Bromance with JT and Vincent. I wonder how his confession regarding giving Vincent's name to Muirfield in order to give him an edge in the war.and keep him safer(he thought) will be received.?
This show just keeps getting better and better and I hope ,like everyone else. that Vincent and Catherine find their way back to each other in episodes prior to the hiatus. and before what has been advertised as a big cliff-hanger.
We need this story to continue for many seasons. #BATB
Thanks for another positive review Virginia ~ totally love the VinCat healing and the wash of emotion I felt in their shared moment on the bullpen floor after Vincent saves Cat again ~ can't help but squeeeeeee!!! ♥ Haven't felt this tingly connection between them since 2x04 Hothead. Might have got ahead of myself a bit thinking they will fall into each other's arms again soon but writers have given fair warning~ they are not letting poor V off the hook that easily ~ mmm green eyes will be flashing ~ might have to put up with a bit more of gross Gabe fawning eew ~ fast forward button is my friend ;o) and look forward to some Vincent wooing Cat and them taking their time to fall in love again ~ slowly. We will be rewarded for our patience I know it ! :D
ReplyDeleteloved your review and agree with all your points. really like your writing style as well. regarding the hand at the end, i think it is colm feore's character who appears in the next episode
ReplyDeleteGreat review; yes I'm founding member of the Gabe with Cat makes my skin crawl club - Never got how 2 really intelligent, tough and independent women could so easier trust someone who did what he did last year - that's been driving me crazy all season. Even though it appeared that they were growing closer, at every turn you could see that she's not over Vincent and she was trying to force a connection with Gabe that doesn't exist and I thought it showed in his face each time. Even when he tells her "I vant to be with you, I'm in", she has no reaction and his face shows it - yes she was in danger but if she was really into him there would have been something from her but she kind of ignored it. Other evidence, her jealousy of Tori & Vincent, her over the top denial of I'm not jealous, "I can't believe I was ever with someone like that", the plea she made to Vincent to do the right thing to connect with who she loved, her finally understanding how betrayed Vincent feels, and all their non-verbal signals. There's minus chemistry with Gabe, while with Vincent they don't need to say a word and everyone can see that including Gabe. I loved how they protected each other; Vincent went in as soon as he knew Cat was a hostage, she turned out the lights, told him to get rid of the necklace so he could beast up, and finally he shielded her from the sniper and when he put his hand on her face - fire!
ReplyDeleteLots of great Tess moments, and nice to see her hug Vincent and invite him to her party. Just not JT, but next week its all about JT.
Not going to comment about Tori - she's a non-factor IMO, however the same can't be said for Gabe. I agree that I never believed his "born again" story line; he's too ruthless to change so quickly and I think he is up to something - he may have feelings for Cat but I think he also has nefarious intentions and suspect it was his hand reaching out of the limo for the necklace (he's rich and has a driver).
Vincent, well I was so happy to see him tell Cat about his spective, and why "the old Vincent" was gone, and how he'd been betrayed and hurt - gee surprised he had to tell her that, as the old Cat would have figured that out. Then when he dropped Tori like a sack of potatoes when he heard the gunshot, as he feared for Cat - that the old Vincent came roaring back.
I agree with comments that it is actually Cat who has been acting more out of character this season than Vincent - and while I appreciate that she felt a lot of guilt for Vincent's capture, lost her Dad, found her bio-Dad who was evil, lost her sister etc... I just never understood how Gabe was the object of her trust and forgiveness but not Vincent. Maybe because she loved Vincent soooo much and Gabe doesn't really mean much (though she's in denial now) that she held him to higher standard or expected more from him.
While I was very encouraged and found this to be the best show so far (outside of Hothead), I have seen photos from ep 13 that show Cat moving in for kiss with Gabe, so he's not out of the picture yet. Maybe its goodbye, as Sherry said this show would be uber romantic and first major move for Vincent & Catherine, but I really hope that the romance isn't between Gabe & Cat as that would be devastating considering how romantic last year's Valentine's show was - when Vincent hired the flash mob to him how he felt about her.
Ratings up a little again - so come BATB writers & producers - read the writing on the wall and stop the Gabe nonsense and have Cat truly be on her own, so that she can find herself and realize that it is Vincent for her by end of the season - like they've been telling fans that this division is to bring them to a deeper relationship/love.
Keep the presence up on social media - they are tracking this - so everyone "Beast Up"!
I loved this episode, and was surprised that it was the drunk who had it.I have to said from day 1 of season 2,something was off with Gabe.He tried to kill Vincent at the end of season 1 and he was not a beast all the time, just an evil person. In Hothead episode,he almost got Vincent killed,by accident,I think not.Your review in my opinion is right on.Some people are already being critical of different scenes. No show is perfectly written,if stripped down, but that is not why we watch a great show. This episode had almost everything except J.T.,Vincent and Cat getting closer,Tess being around more.I am waiting to see about Dana, the FBI agent. We'll see if she is sincere. But guys you really couldn't ask for a better episode!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your whole statement.
ReplyDeleteI agree.I have never been with the Gabe fanclub. All the stuff he did last season,I don't even know why he is back.It would have been better with Evan.
ReplyDeletegreat review #batb is awesome
ReplyDeleteThanks, I agree the show is awesome - great to see online buzz for #batb growing lately! :)
ReplyDeleteHmm, interesting, I bet you're right! Thanks for the kind words too :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these terrific insights on #batb, and for reading! :)
ReplyDeleteOh Evan, we hardly knew ye!
ReplyDeleteVinCat was squee-tastic in this ep! Thanks for reading and commenting! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! Thanks!! :)
ReplyDeleteFor me this was the best ep since Hothead. I loved the VinCat moments, of course. Finally they appear to be going in the same direction. With a renewed appreciation for Vincent, hopefully Tess will stop encouraging Gabe! I really wish the writers would drop the Cat and Gabe nonsence, the only thing it makes me want to do is turn the channel! And with the pic out for ep 13, where Cat is going in for a kiss, well it defalates my renewed excitement quite quickly. :( I’m hoping it’s not what it seems!! (fingers crossed) I wonder if they released it on purpose, so we can be prepared and not taken by surprise. Either way, I don’t like it one bit!! :/ The last thing I want, if the show gets cancelled, is a rushed, cheap reunion for VinCat because the writers wasted so much precious time on Cat and Gabe! I like Gabe just fine when he’s not mooning over Cat, IMO they are wasting his character and his acting abilities. I’m all for Vincent being jealous and having to earn Cat back, just please don’t drag it out for another 10 episodes!......Ok. Rant over, I’ll stop whinning! lol Time to remind myself it’s just a TV show. lol
On the plus side, I loved the heart to heart from Vincent. Jay did an excellent job portraying his emotions. Tess was finally bearable again! How I missed her!! :) Still can’t stand Tori, I actually want to punch her (this is just a show, this is just a show...) I MISS JT!!!
I really enjoyed your recap and you mirrored
ReplyDeletemany of my thoughts and feelings about this episode. You hit the nail on the head with Gabe. His character is quite murky, like the lines are slightly blurred. Live comments about VinCat - they are so not over each other. Glad to have another Beauty and the Beast fan. Just wish more people (i.e those with Nielsen boxes) would give this show a chance.
Daddy Reynolds was last seen filming episode 2.14 so he is still lurking in the shadows biding his time in jail or not.
ReplyDeleteYeah it was pretty cheesy. If Cat was gonna try dating others could they at least not have made it Gabe (eww). Anyway both the V and T and the C and G ships are going to make like the Titanic so don't worry.
ReplyDeleteLovely review Virginia, Thank you. I felt so sorry for Vincent in this episode. Only for that gunshot Vincent would have made it out the door with his beloved Tori over his shoulder:-) But he decided to save not just one woman but two other women, Tess and Cat and lots of other people at the precinct. So sweet the moments VinCat had together right after their rescue.
ReplyDeleteI think Gabe may have something to do with the big event that is going to happen. I am wondering if he is the real Murfield and playing the innocent to be close to Cat so he can get information and access to the gem. Maybe he knows why the gem is belong to Cats family or that connection and maybe without her he can't use it. Once the gem is in his possession maybe we will meet the real Gabe. Just a thought
Great Review. I feel exactly like you about this episode. I enjoyed the interaction from Vincent with the other characters. And it was so lovely see Vincent note the presence of the Cat for the beats of her heart.
ReplyDeleteI'm not against Cat try other relationships at this time, but not with Gabe - after what he did to VinCat makes no sense. I think there is something mysterious and bad about Gabe.
I'm worried about the time that Writers have for create a coherent VinCat reconciliation.
What a fun, heart warming, accurate review of BATB.
ReplyDeleteIt never occurred to me till now that Gabe's intentions may not be pure. I was a little shocked by his sudden turn around. But it never occurred to me that it was calculated. That would make my day. Because I find it a little hard to connect the two. The old Gabe was selfish, evil, and less than trustworthy. I liked him better then. When he wasn't trying to put the moves on Catherine. I think JT said it best when he stated to Gabe "What do you want with him?"
Thanks for your review but did I miss something.....Did you not address the "Elephant in the room"? Good looking guy with super powers, green rock removes super powers, on again off again relationship with pretty girl, pretty girl has family history with ancient green rock. Sounds very familiar, it's been almost 10 years so why not try it again.
ReplyDeleteI still insist that Gabe's beast is will make an appearance..."He's not all dead...he's mostly dead". I like the show, hope it does better, hoping for a 10 season box set (LOL).
The beauty of #BATB is its unique history and mysterious .. deserves the 3 season
ReplyDeleteThis episode finally got my hopes up. The looks that passed between them were thrilling. Vincent is so compelling this episode. If it weren't for the "unresolved" being used a dozen times, even Catherine was coherent.
ReplyDeleteNot sure about the Gabe. At least he stopped chasing everyone around with euthanasia syringes. But while he professes to be all about helping Catherine, he sure hasn't done much. killed the guy with the answers, stands outside where it is safe. Last episode, he made her wear a wire, very dangerous but where was he? safe and secure back at the precinct. He calls her in to talk about a case then asks her not to take it. He is the boss, why not just tell her she isn't assigned? Too many questions about him.
You wanna know what happened to 'The Old Vincent'? He heard there may not be a Season 3.
ReplyDeleteOkay, injecting those lyrics into your review thanks a lot - you had me in tears ;) Great review. I think a lot of us VinCat beasties really think that there is still a darker side to Gabe that we are yet to see - I too cannot fully accept that the guy who tried to kill Vincent is gone. Gabe is far to sugary sweet to be authentic IMHO - and it's not because gosh darn it he is such a nice guy there is just something about him that just doesn't sit right. I think it's a set up. When VinCat start to re-unite we may see that 'other' side to Gabe. As to who is in that car? Good question. I have another question. What about Bob? (not the movie) :P Is #BATB done with him or is there still something he has left to do? He is only in jail, he's not gone.
ReplyDelete
