Arrow - Episode 2.17 - Birds of Prey - Jessica de Gouw to return

27 Jan 2014

Dracula's Jessica de Gouw will reprise her role as the DC Comics vigilante on an upcoming episode of Arrow aptly titled "Birds of Prey," TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

The last we saw of Helena Bertinelli, Oliver's (Stephen Amell) spurned former lover was on the hunt for her father, crime boss Frank Bertinelli (Jeffrey Nordling) after he had her fiancé killed. Helena will return to Starling City in hopes of exacting revenge after the Arrow arrests Frank. However, to kill him, she's going to have to go through the Arrow... and Canary (Caity Lotz)!

  1. ohhhhh this sounds good. Jessica played an intense role, really looking forward to see her back. If dracula flops I hope they'll go and sent her to Central city. #.#

  2. Hope this is where they start to turn around the Huntress character. Maybe they will take a page out of JLU and have Canary help mentor her

  3. Please drop that storyline. helena is getting annoying.

  4. Wow that sounds good! Excited already!

  5. with her was the ebst episode of season 1 cant wait to see her back

  6. not a huge huntress fan but the title itself makes me hope for at least two references to the canned WB show

  7. Great news! They can't call it Birds of Prey with just two characters so who will be the surprise third character?

    ReplyDelete
  8. This sounds fun and yay Caity is still listed as Canary so she makes it to at least 2x17 (fingers crossed that she stays permanently).

  9. Not really happy to hear this. She was one of the weakest elements of Season 1. However, at least Canary will be back in the present-day storyline. I hope she wipes up the floor with Huntress.

  10. Me too, I don't know why some people are so against her character. She was pretty bad-ass. Looking forward to this episode =D

  11. I think Felicity will be Oracle and will be the one that breaks up the fight between Sara and Helena.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sara is probably coming back to the present storyline this Wednesday.. the press release of episode 2.13 (next Wednesday's episode) has Oliver trying to convince her to stay in Starling City.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm right there with you. I hope she becomes a regular.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Exactly. That's why I think sometime soon Helena has to change her outlook and her attitude. Maybe this episode will be that time.

  15. Please, she should come back for good. Helena was so perfect for Oliver on season one. I'm not a fan of comic books, so I really don't know what happened with the Huntress. But I think that she is great for this show. For me, Helena is way better than both Lance sisters.

  16. Helena/Huntress was one of the most important parts of Oliver's personal growth in season one. The lessons he learned and the experience he gained in dealing with Helena weren't easy to take but they were a big part of Oliver's evolution.

As always, a viewer's entertainment value may vary but Helena's impact on Oliver was important to both the character of Oliver Queen and to the show going forward.

  17. Hmmm, so there might be a Canary, Huntress, and I guess Felicity as Oracle team?

I just hope they write the Huntress better this time around. If you want to tell me she's a grey, complex character, you're advised not to have her slaughter a dozen innocent FBI agents this time.

  18. Perfect for Oliver? She shot cops, she hurt Tommy, and she threatened Felicity. Oliver's girlfriend had her career completely derailed because Helena shattered her leg. Don't get me wrong, I like the character but she is nowhere near being a perfect partner-in-vigilante-crime for Oliver.

What makes Helena an interesting character that she's not a hero or a villain. She's not strictly friend or foe. She's dangerous and screwed up and she's a huge pain in Oliver's ass. Helena is one of Oliver's biggest regrets and one that keeps coming back to haunt him. That's what makes her interesting.

  19. I really want Sara to be the permanent Canary and for them to take a different route with Laurel. I'm sure Laurel as Canary was the original plan, but they do change things on the fly sometimes due to feedback from fans (for example: Felicity getting a much bigger role than expected because she was so popular). They essentially struck gold with Sara and Caity Lotz so they should get a lot more mileage out of the character instead of giving her role to Laurel.

  20. I can't say that I agree but instead I'll suggest that, like Oliver, the person we were shown in season one was at the beginning of a character evolution. The young woman we saw isn't likely to stay the same. I don't have an uplifting spin on the acting chops though. If you don't like what she has to offer there's nothing that can be done about that.

  21. I felt the Huntress was the type of character with whom writers try to have it both ways: make her very dark and ruthless, but still maintain the possibility of her being a love interest for Oliver/redeemed. I can give characters some leeway over doing bad things, depending on the circumstances, and wanting to get revenge for her fiance's death rather than let her father get away scot-free is certainly a compelling reason. But Helena didn't just do questionable or ruthless things. She hurt innocent people without batting an eyelash. If hurting Tommy and Felicity wasn't enough, the part where she killed all of those FBI agents at the safehouse to get to her father definitely pushed her over the line from ambiguous to evil. She could've just as easily shot them with tranq darts or used a smoke bomb or something.
So all of that said, if they were going to bring her back as full-on villain, that'd be fine, but since they seem to want to give her some kind of redemption (and the episode title definitely implies that), it's going to be problematic. I don't know how she'll make amends for multiple murders of innocent people, unlike Oliver whose victims were at least criminals.

  22. Great news!! Helena is one of my favourite guest characters on the show!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh I see your point, I can understand why people would be conflicted with her character. I'm more of a "entertainment-value" viewer as opposed to people who really divulge into a story and the characters. Thanks for reminding me, season one seems like such a long time ago, I mostly remember her being bad-ass but now I just remembered her shooting Ollie's girlfriend ... that bitch!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think she'll kill Sara, causing Laurel (who either knows Sara is alive at this point, or finds out when Sara is killed by Helena) to begin training to become the Black Canary.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I meant that she was perfect in the first two episodes for that currently Oliver. Of course a lot has changed, but maybe she can find some kind of redemption. And I totally agree about the reason that she is such a interesting character. I just hope that they won't screw up everything by making her a predictable villain.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't know, maybe it's semantics but I judge whether a character is a hero, villain or something in between based on their actions, not their motivations. Helena not only assaulted several innocent people, but actually murdered quite a few feds/cops (I can't remember) in pursuit of her goal. And while that goal is understandable, she's still a villain in my books if she's willing to do such terrible things and is remorseless afterwards. She's just a different kind of villain, who doesn't have huge plots and schemes like the Undertaking or the super-serum, but a personal agenda of exacting revenge for her fiance's death.

  27. The question is whether they can make her part of Oliver's team or not. She was so BSC in the second episode, lost-touch-with-reality crazy, that I don't think they can redeem her enough to play nice with Team Arrow. I can believe in the effects of Mirakuru before I can believe Helena can become sane.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Huntress and Canary inthe same episode? Woo hoo!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't think it's obligatory for her to find redemption in order to "play nice" with Team Arrow. Look at Deadshot. Even he was able to get on the same page as Team Arrow for an episode.

    ReplyDelete
  30. No problem with her helping out on a few adventures. I'm not sure about having her join Team Arrow though, or even be on a Birds of Prey team with Sara and Felicity.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't recall the idea of her formally joining the team ever being presented as a possibility. As for Birds of Prey, that team has a history of including its fair share of shady characters so that's not out of the realm of possibility since the powers that be have been name-dropping that team in conjunction with Helena a few times now.

  40. omg, i'm so excited for this episode! This season has been amazing so far, and i have high expectations to this episode! Look at this title!!! :)

Canary, Huntress, Felicity, all in the same episode ;)

And yes, i knew that Huntress would be back. After all, they left the door open for a big comeback.

p.s: Can we plis have Caity Lotz as Canary permanently? I really really like her!

Yep much worse Summer is really good just hasn't had a lot to work with just yet

  42. Well, maybeshe will be better this time around. Like it or not, this is the Huntress we have for the show, so here's hoping she will develop as time goes on. My opinions on de Gouw aside, I am very excited to see the Birds of Prey beginning to take shape on the series.

    ReplyDelete
  43. oooohhhh. Excited for this. Huntress and Canary in one episode. Cool. I am on a ledge about Helena. I liked her first outing and Oliver's character evolved and learned as a result. But her second outing even though entertaining made her a little too vindictive and cruel and unlikable. So now they can go either way with her. Make her completely against Team Arrow or redeem her a bit and make her gray with the prospect of joining the team once in a while in the future.

I read in Arrow comics last year after leaving Starling city she went to europe (Paris I think) and ended up in a relationship with a bad person or something. I dont remember. I deleted the file. I am trying to hunt it up again. Internet is not cooperating.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree. Helena as a frenemy who helps them when it's in her own best interests can be fun. But if there's going to be an actual BoP team and she's supposed to join Oliver's side permanently, that'll be tricky because redeeming her for that stone-cold killing spree is going to take a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't think she is bad either, I think she is messed up and I personally think she can be redeemed.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm not sure about the redeeming part but I believe she can eventually become enough of a reasonable person to collaborate with.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have to disagree. Oliver and even Sara are as messed up as Helena if not more, and while they are killers, their victims are almost always criminals and they usually do it only when they must. Helena hurts and even kills innocent people, not for survival but to get to her father and exact revenge. She may have a tragic backstory but she still had a choice, and unlike others she chose cruelty and vindictiveness.

    ReplyDelete
  48. How do you know who Sara killed for the league and how do you know they were all criminals? How can we even know if Sara askes questions prior to assassin them?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Helena grew up with a criminal father who basically watched her every move and who was responsible for murdering her fiance. That can't be easy either. At least in the case of Oliver and Sara, they weren't betrayed by their parents. I'm sorry but I can sympathize with her too, just like I sympathize with Oliver and Sara.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Okay, point taken, we don't know that. But Sara still said "There were things I had to do to survive" and "There's only one way to leave the league", implying that disobeying her orders would've meant death. That doesn't make it right, of course - she traded her own life for other people's - but at least it's a better reason than wanting to kill someone for revenge. And I still think both she and Ollie suffered worse fates than Helena and should be even more messed up. They were away from home in some kind of hell-ish reality for 5 years, Oliver at least was tortured and (many times) nearly killed. I certainly sympathize with Helena's plight, not only was her fiance murdered but her own father was responsible for it, but to say she became so disturbed and unstable that she's not even a bad person for doing what she did? As I said, there's always a choice, unless you're completely insane and don't even understand what you're doing (which none of these people are). If Oliver was killing innocent people like the feds/cops Helena shot at the safehouse, even to save the city rather than for personal vengeance, people would say he's a psycho.

All of that said, I don't necessarily think it's impossible to redeem Helena but she needs to work hard for it and make amends. They mustn't just have her look sad and say she's sorry for everything she did a few times and then make her a Team Arrow member like nothing ever happened.
