Arrow 2.11 "Blind Spot" Review: Looking Behind the Mask
Jan 23, 2014
Arrow ReviewsLast night’s episode of Arrow, “Blind Spot,” addressed a number of the major plot lines and was one of the best episodes yet this year. The episode was written by the ever solid team of Wendy Mericle and Beth Schwartz and directed by regular Glen Winter. This episode interwove the theme of things and people are not as they appear to be – hence the “blind spot” alluded to in the title – and significantly advanced the main action of the show. As Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) says, “Not a lot of people show their real face in public.” While I don’t think you can love a comic/superhero show without loving the parade of villains, I was very happy to see this episode stay focused on the main action and not distract us with a minor villain. Kudos to both Katie Cassidy (Laurel) and Caity Lotz (Sara) for knocking their performances as the Lance sisters out of the park.
As this was a Laurel centered episode, I want to begin with Laurel’s story arc. The executive producers had said that Laurel would have to hit rock bottom before she could really start to turn her life around, and we certainly see her getting closer by the end of this episode. She has lost her job and the respect and support of even Quentin (Paul Blackthorne), her father. Her opiate addiction has been exposed to all those close to her – though Adam (Dylan Bruce) tells her they won’t make the news public. I try to make it a policy not to comment on the appearance of an actor on a show, but Cassidy was painfully thin in last night’s episode. My hope is that in preparation for this storyline for Laurel, she altered her appearance. Now that the addiction is exposed, my hope is that Laurel will finally acknowledge it and seek help, and that Cassidy will begin to put some weight back on. This is not in any way a criticism – just an observation and concern.
Cassidy is simply magnificent in this episode. We see determined, justice-seeking Laurel – the Laurel we’ve come to know back in season one. And then we see her completely destroyed. The entire storyline is a nice continuation of the seeds sown back in “Broken Dolls” earlier this season. We get insights that the Laurel everyone thinks they know isn’t the real Laurel. The flashbacks reveal that Sara had a crush on Oliver (Stephen Amell) and was just acting on it at a party, when Laurel tipped their father off about the party and had it raided by the police, resulting in Sara being grounded for a month. During that month, Laurel started dating Oliver. Laurel is apparently just as capable at subterfuge and doing whatever it takes to get what she wants as everyone else. She isn’t the perfect “doll” that is her public face. In another powerful scene, Oliver calls her on trying to fake that everything is ok. Substance addiction is often linked to the need to control or dull reality.
Blackthorne and Cassidy share two powerful scenes addressing addiction. Quentin points out that addiction runs in families. I was hoping that he would urge her to get help. He also plants the seed of doubt in Laurel when he points out that the substance abuse can dull and distort the senses.
It was nice for Laurel to be the one to save Arrow from Blood. However, I did miss the kickass fighter that we’ve seen her be in previous episodes – she didn’t seem to try to fight off her kidnappers and simply kept being thrown to the ground. I thought it was a great twist for Blood to sacrifice Daily (Jesse Hutch). It may also end up being his undoing. I had the feeling that Quentin was suspicious of him in previous episodes. Quentin will also know Daily’s schedule and either he or Felicity may uncover an instance when Daily couldn’t have been acting as Brother Blood.
We learn more about Sebastian Blood (Kevin Alejandro) in this episode, and I love that the writers can make him more sympathetic this far into the storyline. We see that Blood is very much under the control of Slade (Manu Bennett). Just before Sebastian kills his mother, she apologizes for hurting him and he forgives her. While killing his mother does not make him more sympathetic, I was left wondering what she did that hurt him. Being abused as a child isn’t an excuse for becoming a murderer, but it may be an explanation for how he ended up as one. He manages not to kill Laurel even if he does ruin her life as Slade requires of him.
We see Sara break from Ivo (Dylan Neal) in the flashbacks. Lotz does an amazing job with a long scene on the walkie-talkie with Ivo. It’s no easy feat to deliver such an emotional scene without having someone there to act against. She has finally realized that she hasn’t been a part of some science experiment for the greater good, but something horrible and that she was doing it more to simply protect herself.
There is nice parallel moment as we cut from Sara’s scene to Blood meeting with Slade – who we see for the first time in the Deathstroke costume. Is it possible that Blood may see the light and realize that he is also sacrificing people’s lives and that Slade does not share his belief in a greater good? I realize that I’ve already said I make it a policy not to comment on the appearance of an actor, but I’m going to break it again just briefly to say who knew that greying hair, a goatee, an eye-patch, and a shower could make such a difference to Slade?!
We also see Roy’s (Colton Haynes) storyline finally start to come to fruition. It was fun watching Sin (Bex Taylor-Klaus) and Roy work together. It’s pretty clear that Sin has no romantic interest in Roy as she made it clear that she is also Thea’s (Willa Holland) friend, and sensibly kept urging Roy to tell Thea everything. I’m looking forward to Thea being drawn into this storyline.
The end of the episode brings us to a point that we’ve all been waiting for – Arrow is getting a sidekick! Oliver checks in with Roy at several points during the episode. There is a terrific transitional shot at the beginning of the episode that cuts from Oliver’s conversation with Roy to a shot of the disfigured skeleton of the Japanese soldier on the Island. While Roy is out of control, he certainly doesn’t seem to be experiencing the same side effects as Slade or the Japanese soldiers. In the flashbacks, Amell once again impresses with his ability to play such different aspects of his character’s journey. We see and Oliver who is not nearly as tightly controlled as the Oliver who is Arrow, much like Roy now. I wonder if Thea and Sin will end up being “trained” by the Arrow team too.
I doubt that even Roy will be introduced to Felicity or Diggle (David Ramsey) any time soon though as that would let Roy in on who the Arrow really is. Once again, the Arrow team is the voice of reason, especially Felicity. She points out that Sebastian is a likely candidate simply based on his name! She is also the one to point out that people are rarely what they seem, after all, Diggle is more than a billionaire’s driver and bodyguard. I love it when a show can address its own potential logic flaws! While Oliver comes to recognize that he might have a blind spot where Laurel is concerned, he also needs to ensure that he doesn’t simply write her off and believe Blood simply because he’s Blood. As he says in the flashback, the first thing he learned on the Island was to trust no one. Clearly, Brother Blood and the serum can’t stay inactive forever, and that will lend more weight to Laurel’s accusations.
What did you think of the episode? Are you excited to see Roy’s transition to a member of the team? Were you disappointed to see Laurel defeated on every front by Blood? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

you have to think, maybe its makeup and laurel is wearing bigger clothes. thats what stana katic did after her gunshot wound in season 3 finale.
ReplyDeleteLaurel Figthing the crime is High Heels she wore them the whole time... i really liked the episode was an intense one of coursse Laurel being the leading woman of the series a lot of things will happen to her.. i knew that Sebastian wouldnt be in the mask it was too obvious he is not that easy to get...
ReplyDeleteLets see how thing are going to go with Laurel so far i like thos part of her almost selfdestructive i wanna see more of that....
Actually, in the scene on the roof when she meets Arrow, she's actually in running shoes! The roof is gravel - no way you could wear heels in that! But I don't think we were supposed to notice that ... ;)
ReplyDeleteI hope I'm wrong and that's all it is.
ReplyDeletei noticed cause i found it funny, you were taking hostage, and you are running away froma guy but you still keep your shoes on, gurl just take em off and start running like hell!
ReplyDeleteGood review, as usual. You do your usual fine job of teasing out the thematic elements. I also enjoyed this episode, though the raid on the file office seemed a rather unwise course of action. surely, as an ADA, Laurel could have got access to that room on some official pretrxt--especialy since later in the episode we're told that "any city employee" could have been the one to beat Ollie and Laurel to the file to steal it! And while Slade's goatee, eyepatch and so on don't do a lot for me, I do confess feeling a it of a thrill of delight upon seeing him in the Deathstroke togs.
ReplyDeleteLOL - I did notice that too! At least they were sturdy heels! Definitely, usually a pet peeve with me too.
ReplyDeleteThanks! If there was a weak moment in the episode, I'd have to say it was breaking into the file room..
ReplyDeleteGood review as always. Not that I agree with it, but still. Laurel, although her storyline has been terrible this season, has lurked in the shadows. By bringing her front and centre, that lack of quality was brought to the main story. It wasn't a terrible episode, but it was just about as disappointing as I had expected. The Deathstroke scene wins everything though - and I'm not even a comic fan! And, Roy is inevitably going to learn Oliver's identity next week.
ReplyDeleteI find it so funny, that people keep hoping that KC is losing weight for her role as Laurel. Let's just call it what it is. The woman has a personal issue, possible food disorder, and needs to get some help. No way is she doing this for her character. She's not going for an Oscar here, this is The CW. She can be a method actor, but there's no reason for her to go all out to extremes to fit this character. I didn't see her going this far with any of her other roles. So with that said. I hope KC gets help, and starts putting weight back on her again.
ReplyDeleteOne thing i forgot to mention...When Sin was helping Roy, and she dressed as a prostitute to get the attention of the lawyer, could that have been a nod to Mia??? I wonder if down the line, they'll actually have Mia show, that would be AWESOME!!!
As for Blood, there's a lot of reasons why he could be a murderer, and abuse as a child is definitely a reason why that could happen. Abuse definitely stems it, if it's not the sole purpose. I think we'll get more into his background as to how he came to be.
As for Felicity and Quentin, i really hope one of them, if not both of them, dig deeper into Blood's story. I really don't see either one of them, just giving up just like that. Felicity's curiosity always gets the better of her. And as for Quentin, as a man with previous addiction himself, he should remember that he was in Laurel's shoes, and when he spoke about something, no one would take him seriously, and doubted everything that came out his mouth. So if he's not going to believe his own daughter, and go by what she said, then he should at least do it for him, for that reason.
Awesome episode, and kudos to Slade's costume, it actually looked perfect...
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Sin as hooker--pretty lucky they got the slasher first time out, eh? What would she have done if he was just a john looking for a good time? :O
ReplyDeleteAs for the Katie Cassidy issue, my guess would be that Lisa is aware that body and body image issues are complex and touchy ones (for understandable reasons) and wanted to raise the issue as diplomatically as possible--knowing that doing so, not matter HOW one does so, can lead to misunderstanding and resentment.
I noticed that and thought it made for a remarkably weird-looking outfit, even by the standards of this show!
ReplyDeleteRIGHT!! You're right. It is the first time Sin has come out on the field. I didn't realize that, I just kept thinking Mia (Speedy 2).
ReplyDeleteAs for Lisa's review on KC issues. I don't mind that she touched on the subject, and she can do it as diplomatic as possible. In fact i'm GLAD she touched on the issue. B/c who the hell wouldn't?? I mean it's so out there you can't not touch on the subject of her appearance. But i don't see why everyone is sugar coating it. KC has a problem. And i really hope she can get help on it. No one cares for her character. (very little do). Her losing weight isn't going to change that. In fact, it's just making her worse. It's really bad when 70% of the Arrow fanbase starts calling her "Crack Canary". That nickname is buzzing all over the internet. Smh
I don't know Mia!? I'll have to do some research! I was trying to be diplomatic. I am genuinely worried about Katie. I've met her, and she is actually super nice - met her in passing, not that she would remember me. I think Laurel suffered when we all fell head over heels for Felicity - just love Emily Bett Rickards! But I did love Laurel last season too. This season, not so much... but hopefully they can turn it around.
ReplyDeleteMia Dearden aka Speedy. Look her up. You'll like her story. As for Katie. I just hope she gets help soon. This isn't doing anything for Laurel's image (no pun intended). And i didn't mind Laurel in season 1. But i still didn't like her. But i never warmed up to her character. And now, it's just really too late. I mean we have 2 more episodes that are Laurel central so i'm hoping, that i'll somewhat be able to like her or just feel something for her, ANYTHING.
ReplyDeleteI am sure Katie is a wonderful human being and I hope she gets heathy soon but as Shannon said it is a glaring issue when we see her on screen. So people will mention it. I noticed even Emily Bett has lost weight this season.Hollywood is a tough place.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you on the fact that Laurel suffered when we fell for felicity. Laurel suffered because KC has no chemistry with SA for the epic love that they want us to believe. Laurel suffered the most when writers decided to let her jump into bed with Oliver without resolving any issues they had and when in previous episode she was heartbroken for Tommy. They did that for the dramatic impact when Tommy died and Laurel's unraveling. But it would have been more believable if she was commited to Tommy before his death.
Laurel is still suffering because of sloppy and melodramatic writing. Telling us Laurel was bitchy towards Sara, a beloved character, and kind of stole her crush is not going to gain any points for her atleast from female audience.
Sadly, I have to agree with everything you say here, except, perhaps the lack of chemistry. I think they did have chemistry in the first season, but SA and EBR just had so much more. You know the first blush of love is off a show when we start hammering on them - lol! I think that in general, the women have been hit and miss. I never felt the Huntress was well written and I was very happy to see her go. They never exploited China White the way they might have. So far not really any great female villains. Shado, Sara, Felicity, and Sin, however, are all wonderful characters. Moira and Thea are played too often as victim - I'm hoping to see that really change for Thea and I did love Moira besting Malcolm earlier in the season. The jury is still out on Isabel who really has had nothing to do yet. Part of what the writers are struggling against is, of course, the comics genre itself - which has both wonderful and stereotypical women. I didn't need Laurel "humanized" - I liked the strong public defender who held her family together after being betrayed by her boyfriend and losing her sister - not gaining any points for stealing that sister's crush for me for sure.
ReplyDeleteAbout the chemistry between SA and KC, SA actually said in an interview several months ago that they didn't do a chemistry test between him and KC. I think that confirms the theory that the CW wanted KC for the role of Laurel, as she was the actress most known to the CW viewers from the Arrow cast before the show premiered. At least they did chemistry tests between SA and Caity Lotz, and EBR and Gustin to prevent such chemistry issues from repeating..
ReplyDeleteKatie Cassidy lost weight for the role i promise you check some of her latest instagrams she is looking a lot like season 1 Laurel in the pics.If that sounded harsh i apologise I'm not always that articulate with my posts lol
ReplyDeleteI agree Lisa their was definitely chemistry between Katie and Stephen but of course chemistry is subjective to the viewer
ReplyDeleteAgreed, and the fact that Quentin has brought up the way Laurel looks at least twice that i know of proves that giving her the gaunt look is a deliberate move for her storyline
ReplyDeleteGreat review Lisa and thank you for acknowledging the Lance sisters in this ep i thought they were both great
ReplyDeleteThanks! I call 'em as I see 'em - I can't wait to see the two of them together - I think that scene is going to by dynamite.
ReplyDeleteYep especially after the conversation between Ollie and Sara on the island lol keep up the good work Lisa
ReplyDeleteI don't do instagram. But i'll believe it when i see it on the show.
ReplyDeletethere actually are makeups out there that make you look basically like a human skeleton. combine it with larger than your size clothes, and you can make yourself look like a famine victim.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I agree with everything you say here. I think we're super spoiled to have both the Oliver-Dig-Felicity team AND Roy-Sin-Thea - both great! And the writers really are struggling with her character. I wonder how much the immense popularity of Felicity contributed to them having to re-imagine Laurel - or maybe we are just being impatient? I agree, let's wait and see...
