Arrow 2.10 "Blast Radius" Review: Shock Waves and Fallout

Jan 16, 2014

This week’s episode of Arrow, “Blast Radius,” was written by Jake Coburn and Keto Shimizu and directed by Rob Hardy. This was the first episode of Arrow for Hardy who has also directed such action oriented shows as The Vampire Diaries, Castle, and Criminal Minds. The episode has plenty of great action and nicely weaves a number of plot threads together. And we have the debut of the mask!

The episode picks up five weeks after “Three Ghosts” and deals with some of the fallout from the discovery of the Mirakuru and Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) accident. The action in the present is nicely mirrored by the action on the Island that we see in flashbacks. Slade (Manu Bennett) is struggling with rage and an overpowering need for revenge against Ivo (Dylan Neal). Sara (Caity Lotz) provides a nice vehicle for exposition and tells Oliver (Stephen Amell) that all of the Japanese subjects who hadn’t died had been horribly disfigured, either mentally or physically. As Slade looks fine, we can assume that his damage was to his personality. Oliver is consumed with guilt over Shado’s death and wants to confess to Slade, but Sara stops him. It’s easy to see that Slade has since learned the truth and this is why he’s coming after Oliver now.

In the present, we see Roy (Colton Haynes) struggling with the changes he’s experiencing too. The flashbacks suggest that Roy should be much more of a mess than he is. Oliver is, quite frankly, doing a crappy job keeping tabs on what’s happening with Roy. He’s so distracted by the Mirakuru that he drops the ball on a few things in this episode. We see that Roy has super healing powers and super strength when he saves Moira (Susanna Thompson) from the falling light grid. But Thea (Willa Holland) sees too! Thea isn’t stupid and knows something is going on by the end of the episode. Roy is continuing to try to keep her in the dark. I have to wonder if this is to protect her or because he thinks she won’t approve. Regardless, with any luck, she will tell Oliver by the next episode. It’s interesting though that Roy’s side effects don’t seem to be nearly as bad as Slade’s were, so possibly they have worked out the kinks of the serum and Roy won’t have the mind-altering side effects.

The scenes in flashback were excellent, with Lotz, Amell, and Bennett all delivering exceptional performances. Bennett, in particular shows Slade’s fear as he slowly recognizes he’s losing himself and the rage he is unable to conquer. I suspect that Slade may have removed himself from Oliver and Sara in part to protect them against him. We also see the depth of his feelings for Shado, but also how he cares for Oliver, which is demonstrated by him giving Oliver Shado’s hood. Another Arrow question answered – how Oliver got the hood! Amell conveys Oliver’s anguish over Shado’s death and lying to his friend. We also see him at his wit’s end trying to figure out a way to save them all from Ivo. This dovetails nicely with the final scene with Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards).

The scenes on the Island once again draw a parallel to the triangle we see in the present, only now it’s Diggle (David Ramsey), Oliver, Felicity and Slade, Oliver, Sara. Slade and Diggle are clearly the mentors and Felicity and Sara are the knowledge/potential love interests. As demonstrated in flashbacks, Oliver knows the price of having people around him and having the responsibility to try to keep everyone safe and alive. No doubt this is what drove him to try to go it alone in the first place. The episode drives home that he can’t simply control everything and keep those close to him safe if they have to do their jobs. Diggle remains as always an important father-figure and the voice of reason. It was hilarious watching Diggle try to fill in for Felicity. I loved it when Diggle called Oliver on why he was sniping at Felicity: I think you didn’t have a problem with her dedication until she met Barry Allen.

Oliver is beginning to accept that he can’t do this alone, but while he may yearn for a deeper connection to someone, he’s not ready to go there yet. That doesn’t stop him from being jealous of Barry, however, and the scenes with Felicity and Oliver sniping at one another were fantastic! It was nice to see Felicity stand up to Oliver and tell him to get his head out of his ass. And she’s not wrong – he was distracted in this episode. Outwardly, Oliver is solicitous about Barry, asking Felicity how he is and so forth, but there’s no other reason for accusing Felicity of being distracted other than jealousy. I also loved the final scene, which is beautifully acted by both Amell and Rickards. Oliver apologizes, but Felicity makes him do it properly and work for it when she says, “Are you apologizing to me or talking to your quiver?” It’s a very astute question – is he treating her like a person or simply as a tool?

It was heartbreaking to see that Felicity still has some hope even while she is falling for Barry. It seems unlikely that she will ever completely drop the torch she is holding for Oliver, dooming any other relationship. She starts the question with “Do I have a shot” and there is a brief hesitation as she quickly assesses Oliver’s reaction before she breaks the tension with “at employee of the month.” She doesn’t want him to say no, that there is no chance at a romantic relationship, even if there isn’t one – or if he isn’t ready. Oliver’s response is fantastic anyway as he tells her she’s no longer an employee, she’s a partner and he couldn’t do this without her. It may not be all she wanted, but this is definitely something she’s earned. Oliver then turns the conversation to Barry, clearly indicating that this is where Felicity should place her heart. I loved the moment at the end of the scene when Oliver simply touches Felicity’s shoulder, holding her eyes with his and completely grounding her. It will be interesting to see if Oliver still supports a Barry/Felicity match when Barry ends up with superpowers. He’s hardly any “safer” for Felicity and Felicity is going to be stepping into a triangle there too.

The other major storyline in the episode centers on Blood (Kevin Alejandro). It was really interesting to see Oliver forming a strong bond with Blood – as both Oliver and the Hood while Laurel (Katie Cassidy) grows increasingly wary of him. This is the beginning of another interesting triangle. It shows again the level of distraction on Oliver’s part that he is completely unaware of anything off about Blood. I loved Laurel telling Oliver that there was something unknowable about him and he reminded her of Oliver like that. It was great to see Cassidy getting some screen time and a meatier storyline. We are clearly meant to pick up on the fact that she’s the one that stole Quentin’s (Paul Blackthorne) pain medication as we see her popping pills. No doubt Oliver will be reluctant to believe her about Blood due to her current struggles with pills and alcohol. Quentin is reluctant to see the bad in Blood as well, but as he is already getting suspicious of Daily (Jesse Hutch), he is more likely to come to be swayed against Blood and come to Laurel’s aid.

A quick word on the terrific actions sequences in this episode. I loved Oliver stringing up the drug dealer in the opening sequence. I also loved the motorcycle chase after Shrapnel (Sean Maher). In particular, when Oliver jumps off the bike and slides beside it, then jumping back on it – does he have those wheelies in the heels like you see on kid’s sneakers?

I have one quibble with this episode – and the series in general. They get these fantastic guest stars – Sean Maher, perhaps most beloved from Firefly – and then they are only in two or three short scenes! It is both a blessing and a curse. I’m sure, however, that I was not alone in hoping for a Firefly reunion between Maher and Summer Glau (who played siblings on Firefly).

Overall, I thought this was another really strong episode and a great return to set up the second half of the season. We’ve had the mask somewhat pulled away from Blood – he wasn’t an orphan, killed his father, and locked his mother in an insane asylum. It will be interesting to see how this affects the relationship between Oliver and Laurel. I also can’t wait to find out just what is going on with Roy. What did you think of the episode? Do you like the mask? Are you still rooting for Oliver and Felicity? What about the triangle being set up between Oliver/Blood/Laurel? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. Hello, Olicity all the way. Loved last nights episode, especially obviously the Olicity parts. Would love to see more of jealous Oliver. Dig as usual is the man that says what's on MY mind:) Can't wait to see next week's episode.

  2. Skipped as usual the Laurel parts. Thank you for you much detailed review :)

  3. Fun episode! I love the brewing Oliver/Slade destruction. The island stuff was good. Lots of fantastic stunts this episode, which I always enjoy. Team Arrow was, once again, the highlight and I was shocked that Diggle got shot! And then the end with Oliver and Felicity was just so good! They're awesome and sexy and wow.... I can't wait to see these two get together.

  4. I totally agree! There may have been some cheering coming from my couch... ;)

  5. Very welcome! I've been really disappointed in what they've given Katie Cassidy this year - but I thought last night's ep actually gave her some potentially good things to do - she's actually the one seeing Blood clearly... I'll let you know when there's a really good Laurel scene you'll want to go back to - I'm hoping there will be some coming up!

  6. I totally squeaked when Dig took the bullet! And then of course, he's all "just a through and through... no big deal..." Love him!! I can't wait for more Manu! I really, really hope that it ultimately ends with them settling their differences... but not before some awesome fights and conflict!

  7. So glad Arrow's back. Team Arrow and Oliver and Felicity are my favourite aspects of the show, and I hope the show keeps building on the latter two slowly but steadily.

Intrigued to see where things are going for Roy. AND DEATHSTROKE IN THE PROMO FOR NEXT WEEK. Oh my dear.

It's really cool of you to respond to comments and interact with fans. Keep up the good work!

  8. Thanks! Our chats here are more than half the fun! Especially since we are mostly all pulling for Oliver and Felicity! ;) I can't wait for the Slade story to unfold... I am dying for a scene between Diggle and Slade...

  9. Good review, and a good episode, though I also find myself wishing for a bit less contrived tension. Blood's rally served no rational or logical purpose, only the plot purpose of giving Shrapnel an irresistible target. The trap at Shrapnel's store, OTOH, was kinda cool.

  10. They're givig her a bit more meat in th part; now let's hope they give her some in her diet.

  11. Thanks! I'm torn on the Olicity front, I have to admit. I just love Felicity though, so I want her to have everything... I do like them as partners. I think they've set up some very interesting storylines for this second half of the season...

  12. I think it would be cool if Felicity split her time a bit - but Oliver really does need her in Starling City. I am beyond happy to see Laurel get to do something.

  13. Thanks! I almost feel at this point they either have to do an honest to goodness villain of the week - with no mytharc/flashback scenes - or they just need to stick to the mytharc. They've got so many balls in the air right now! Shrapnel - Sean Maher - could have been an interesting hour on his own....

  14. Great review Lisa. I always enjoy reading your reviews. :)

I am just annoyed that they brought someone like Sean Maher for such a trivial role. He didn't even had any great dialogues and his character simply was not explored. Since he is not dead I hope they bring him back and make him team up with some other baddie later on.

Oliver Felicity scenes were gold. Both actors are so good with each other that their scenes outshines almost everything else in the episode. How good was that sniping at each other and that last scene. Diggle is another character who can create an impact on both Oliver and Felicity with just few words. Love Team Arrow.

Another doubt I had is about Roy and Thea. Were they not suspicious about blood the last episode and this episode they are attending the rally in support. what happened to the investigation about the death of Sin's friend?

At last Laurel has something important to do. Still not impressed with the actress but I am glad where her story is going. Writers at last took their head out of their ass about this character. But the actress really need to improve if this liking for her character has to last.

  15. I had a lot of quibbles with this ep...the Laurel storyline came kind of from nowhere, and its really strange that Oliver didn't follow up with Roy. He is with his little sister, one would think that he would monitor him extra close. The whole bomber-plot was tired - we have Slade, we have Blood, but we waste time on a bomer whose motive I have already forgotten? Plus, so far, I was really engaged in the island plot, but since I know now what will eventually happen to everyone, it's difficult to get invested in it.

  16. I have never seen KC before so don't have any reference other than Arrow to judge her as an actor. I have never liked her as Laurel except for her scenes with papa Lance. I was especially disappointed by her acting last season in the episode where her mother came.

That being said you can bring any accomplished actor for Laurel, still the character would suck. I don't know who came up with the idea that she has to jump into Oliver's bed (the guy who cheated with her sister) to make Tommy's death have more impact. I don't mind the addiction thing if they do it correct. I have high hopes for next few episodes.

Where is Isabel. I kind of miss her

  17. Have to agree with all of these - except the Island plotline. We still don't know how all that unfolds, so I'm still interested. It's also a nice way to ratchet up the tension on what's happening with Roy - we see Slade melting down and expect to see the same effects on Roy - yet so far they haven't...

  18. I agree with most of these - except the Island plot - I'm still interested! We know what happens eventually but still not how they got there. We also see what's happening to Slade and expect the same to be happening to Roy - so why isn't Roy going as squirrely as Slade did? The Mirakuru obviously isn't having quite the same effect on Roy - why?

  19. I definitely miss Isabel too! Laurel and Oliver are "the" couple in the comics, so there is a certain pull to go in that direction.

  20. I guess because it "hit" Roy at another point in his life. Slade was hit at his low point. But Roy is at a phase in his life, during which everything gets better. He has a job, he has Thea, and he has found a purpose. I guess the positive thoughts are keeping the negative thoughts under wraps for now.

  21. What really is great, most comments I read who want to see Olicity would like it to happen nice and steady! Nothing forced :-), so we can enjoy this for some time and it does not distract from the main storyl ine.

  22. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that the Mirakuru was filtered through Slade's blood first? He said something to Blood about giving him more blood to make the serum? So maybe Roy was injected with a more watered down version or it has also been altered in some other way too? Sorry about the double post - I thought Discus had eaten my first reply! LOL!

  23. First of all very nice review!! Now about this episode. I haven't caught up with Arrow since season one as I have been very very sick so I finally got a chance to catch this episode the other day and I am very disappointed with the direction this show has gone. I have been a huge fan of Green Arrow for years and I was so excited when they created this show. They promised this show wouldn't turn into another Smallville, yet somehow all this show is all these days is love triangles etc. I am also disappointed where they've taken Laurel, she had a lot of potential and now they made Sarah who was supposed to be dead Black Canary?? I don't mind the drug addict story line, drugs have always been some part of the Green Arrow comics if it was Roy struggling with addiction or Green Arrow himself taking down drug dealers etc. Olicity doesn't do anything for me, it reminds me to much of Smallville which nearly turned me off comic book shows for good. Anyways sorry to be a downer, as I said good review but I think I'll be taking a break from Arrow until all the love triangles are done and dusted.

  24. Even from the first episode I always believed they would make Laurel and Oliver get together. But I hoped given the history they would make them work together fighting crimes first, come to an understanding, start liking the new people they have become and then fall in love again. Not like this. Well thankfully they have put a break to that relationship now. They can revisit it once the characters have grown up a bit.

I didn't like Isabel at all when she was introduced but now I miss her and badly want to know what is she really up to.

  25. I re-watched the episode and now I watched also the Laurel parts and you're right, they gave here some potentially good things to do! I hope next episode she shines and does something great. Cause then she's watchable..

  26. She's so skinny, supermodels are jealous ;)

  27. I loved Oliver and Felicity scenes they were amazing. I love Olicity! I just can't get over the body language of Amell in that scene. It was so expressive and beautiful. Diggle - is it possible for me to adore him more? Not just because he's hilarious and in between the Olicity angst. Because he is so grounded - he's noble. Can't wait for the HIVE storyline. Glad to see Laurel investigating Blood it was a bit OOC cos just last episode it was the Teen Titans on the trail and her trusting Blood. But whatever, I'm glad she took the initiative. I hate the pills - it's a stupid storyline. Hint to writers never include a substance storyline if you can't do it justice. I hope Laurel starts begins to kick ass and take names, and in the relationship department, her lawyer friend from Orphan Black.

  28. That scene was just fantastic - the way Oliver is so centered and just touches Felicity to bring her into that calm. I adore Diggle! We need more Diggle! And I'm still hoping we get through the stupid pill storyline and back to kickass Laurel - I liked her better in jeans, sweaters and converse...
