  1. This episode had the best version of Laurel yet. The ending scene with her and Blood's mom was hands down the best scene for me. Team Toxic isn't even in my top 10 scenes this time.

  2. Slade choking Oliver, hell this guy is the best character on this show

    ReplyDelete
  3. That scene is in my top 3. The island flashbacks are much better this year and I look forward to seeing how they incorporate him into the presence. I hope he is a multiseason villain. I would hate to have him dispatched this season when we really haven't even gotten to see him.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Oliver and Felicity last scene. Beautiful. And Slade being SO boss!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Best scene was a toss up between Team Arrow and the Oliver & Felicity fight. What to chose, what to chose? Loved them both.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I can't quit Slade. I'm sorry I adore that man. I don't care what the hell he does. He's my guy.

    ReplyDelete
  7. "This episode had the best version of Laurel yet."

So... you're saying the drugs are working? :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hands down Oliver apologizing to Felicity and their following conversation. Easy.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ok, I couldn't help but laugh out loud at this one. *runs*

    ReplyDelete
  10. Bwah! If the side effects of Laurel stealing Daddy's pills are that she has good instincts and is a comptent investigator, then more power to her. It was a joy to see Laurel good at something at last. Here's hoping that Laurel 39.0 will stick. I'm getting weary eeping tracks of her many personnas. Pretty soon she'll have more versions than Barbie.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I hope the last scene cements the partnership of Oliver, Diggle, and Felicity so we don't have to keep coming back and revisiting this scene.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I would like for Slade to be the overarching Big Bad of Arrow. There needs to be a personal connection between the main hero and the main villain and Slade fills that role very well.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yep. Jokes aside, this was a productive episode for Laurel. I know the character has more crap to go through yet but as long as she continues to make progress it's alright with me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree that a personal connection to the main villain is a big plus but I'm disappointed in Slade's motivations. They're turning someone I respected into a big baby.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If it turns out this whole thing is the result of a freaking love triangle, I will be the first to throw things at my TV. I hope we haven't heard the reason why yet.

    ReplyDelete
  16. But he loved Shado. Shado was amazing and he made more history with her. And she chose Oliver, which he was OK with but Oliver he chose Sara. But between you and I, and don't get me wrong, I like Sara, but I was hurt at the confirmation that Oliver actually made a conscious choice to save Sara over Shado. I loved Shado. And I held out hope that he didn't make a choice but instead unconsciously leaped in front of Sara because that is who the gun was being pointed at. But I could see how all of this would frustrate Slade fans that he's doing this over a woman.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He really should be THE ultimate main villain of Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  18. What irritated me was that the change came pretty much from nowhere. I didn't get the impression that she was wondering about blood before the hiatus, so I was all "where did that come from?" when she suddenly started to investigate him. Last time I checked she seemed to be more "ask him when you wonder about something" track.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't think I would enjoy the show with him gone, there're no other characters for me to like (because I mostly judge the actors on their performance and Manu is easily the best next to Thompson and Blackthorne)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, Slade loved Shado but Shado was a rational, kindhearted person who would be extremely disappointed and maybe even ashamed of how Slade is choosing to live his life.

As Dahne touched on, I hope we haven't heard the whole story as to why Slade is doing this because if it's just about Shado then it's very disappointing to me. That would make it two "big bads" in a row that are motivated by misguided anger and grief over a woman. It would be worse in Slade's case because he and Shado were never together unlike Malcolm who was at least married to the motivation behind his destruction.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would put Willa Holland before Manu but I agree the four of them are awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Willa stands out in many scenes, she's sadly only utilized for romantic scenes what often bores actors and forces them to go into a routine mode. I do see that she tries to break out of this routine and I genuinely hope that she becomes Speedy and gets some great material.

If Barrowman were a main I'd put him on that list but he sadly isn't, I can't wait for Thea and Malcom to face off :D

    ReplyDelete
  23. I just want her character to be consistent. I've said this before but she is currently the season 1 before midseason Thea. They did not seem to have a grasp on who Thea was as a character in the first part of last season. That made her character very frustrating because I was never sure which Thea was going to show up. When they finally decided on one version of Thea, she became far more interesting to me. I feel Laurel is goingthrough the same growing pains this season. They need to all agree on who Laurel is and go with it. By the way, this is the soapbox that I will be standing on in my review of this episode.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree it came out of nowhere. As did her stealing her dad's pills, blaming the Hood for Tommy's death, and every other version of Laurel so far this season. It feels like they know she is not exactly popular in the fandom so they are throwing everything at her to see what will stick. While I like Laurel better now than last season, it makes it hard to understand the character and to want to delve into her. They need to choose 1 version and go with it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree that they need to find a real plot for Thea. That is quickly rising up my Arrow wish list for season 3. However, I completely disagree on Barrowman. I think he gets far too much credit for his role of Malcolm simply because he is beloved for other roles. He took a character that could have been human, sympathetic, or at least more gray, and turned him into a one-note cartoon cardboard villain. I have rarely seen so much moustache-twirling on TV. He may not have been as overacted and melodramatic as the Count but he was close. I wish he had toned down his performance and given Malcolm a more nuanced touch.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I liked her better in the first...she was my least fav character, but her scenes with Tommy were pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's not that they didn't have a grasp on who Thea was, it was that Oliver's return in the pilot instantly set off a series of changes in the character and her personality and it took until mid-season or so for the dust to settle. She went through a metamorphosis. It all made sense.

Laurel is different. She's been all over the place for a season and a half. There's no clear-cut character arc with her. Tracing her path would be like trying to trace the path of a Super Ball after you've whipped it at the nearest wall.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I couldn't stand Laurel last season. My general thought was fix her or kill her off. I think she is better now that she isn't playing sainted martyr, raging hypocrite, or plot device, but there is still much room for improvement. By the way, I thought Tommy was too good for both her and Olvier last season. That might have been because of the acting though.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I disagree about Thea. It felt like half of the writers wanted her to be the wise touchstone and the other half wanted her to be the bratty socialite. I got whiplash in the rewatchfollowing her character. She has since become one of my favorite characters so I hold out hope that they can fix Laurel as well. Of course at 1.5 seasons, time is running out.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I know it won't happen but I hope that Oliver does not know that Slade is still alive until the season 3 finale. I want him to remain in the dark this whole season and next. In fact, I would love if we would stop having island flashbacks and start having ones about Slade post-Oliver and really get to understand his character so that when he and Oliver do face off, both characters are very rich and the interplay that much more compelling.

    ReplyDelete
  31. that's exactly why I enjoy him so much in this role, we all know Barrowman can play a human character (Scandal) but he plays it so wonderfully hammy (but not overly hammy) that he brings in a villain you WANT to be evil. I don't want Malcom redeemed I just want to see him be the antagonist he's ment to be.
If a villain is played too human he'll ALWAYS end up redeemed (Crowley, Klaus, Elijah, Spike etc.) and I'm sick of that redemption trope. You need to find a villain you root for to be evil not to turn good.
Barrowmans performance embraces that, everyone can play a human character (well not everyone but actors that are good but desperately want to stay on their show because of a fanbase) only actors that are sure of themselves actually pull such performances.

Once of the things that made Caesar Romero stand out so much from the old batman series wasn't his hamminess but the self assured way he delivered his performance.

There's a difference between playing hammy: there's bad ham likeTravolta, a person that thinks his performance is great due to all the emotion popped in and then there's the good ham, the one where the actor knows how far to go to make a character feel iredeemable cartoon-ish.

If I watch a show about a hero fighting villains I don't want to see the villain be incredibly dark and deep but just be villainous so I can love to hate him.
Best example: Bane from the latest Batman. I HATED that movie but Hardys performance just made me outright hate the character but I still enjoyed him.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am now voting to get rid of her...since they introduced Sara and showed us what can be, she is pretty much redundant.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I guess we came to different conclusions from our respective re-watching. I thought Thea's arc was fairly cut-and-dried. When Oliver returns to Starling City Thea had become a troubled, bratty, party girl. Due to some prodding by Oliver, with a little assistance from gradually mending her relationship with her mother, she slowly starts to ease up a little but she's still a troubled, volatile brat. That brought Arrow to the car crash and the ensuing trial which served as Thea's turning point. From there they slowly removed the troubled brat aspect and gradually matured her.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Interesting episode. I honestly struggle with the show when they skew too far into fantasy land (with super speed/ super soldier drugs) but its still one of my favorite shows.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oliver's apology. I mean technically we've been waiting 5 weeks for some type of apology! So i say hands down this is my vote. The fight scene is behind it by a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Slade scenes were definitely the best in this particular episode

    ReplyDelete
  37. You just reminded me how much I loved the stunt action on the motorcycle.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm not happy about the recent talk of adding "superpowers" to the mix. I felt the exclusion of that element is what grounded the show a bit more.

    ReplyDelete
  39. This is the only reason why the island scenes are holding my attention, I need to find out how things went down in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  40. For me, I like Malcolm, but I'm anticipating Slade's transformation into Deathstroke on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah. The fact they explain these 'powers' is good but I have this worry that the show listens to fans far too much (the fans that want the superheroes in the show etc). i was a huge fan of season one's vigilante who got the job done. Season 2 The Hood can still bring it, but this aversion to the final death/killing the target irks me.

I guess I just wanted a different take on the character of Green Arrow unburdened by Comic book fans/ lore.

    ReplyDelete
  42. You know what, I'm going to go out on a limb and make a suggestion that I feel could get her back on the right path. Integration. As spectacular as the women on Arrow are, Moira Queen rocks, the women have very rarely interacted with one another without the presence of the menfolk. And on the rare occasions they do, it feels catty. Now, I'm not a fan of Laurel's, and I'd hate any scenes she'd have with my fave, but I think it would go a long way in "humanizing" her a bit. Because on a show filled with people that have endured so much pain and sadness but have snapped out of it for a greater good, Laurel comes off as so..."woe is me". It grates.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Me too. I hated Oliver last season. Tommy was awesome and he was surrounded by a group of fecked up people.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sara may be my favorite character right now. Felicity, who was my favorite, has taken a turn completely for the worse so the awesome female card is being played by Sara. Well present day Sara. Just Shipwrecked Sara was annoying to the extreme. I have no desire for Laurel to become Black Canary anymore because she will come off badly compared to Sara and everyone would resent her for it. I do however think that Laurel can be useful in other ways besides the supernatural. I like the idea of Thea, Roy, Sin, and Laurel creating their own hero club and fighting evil themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  45. We will have to agree to disagree because I think Barrowman's performance was well beyond overly hammy and it took me completely out of the show every time he was on. Just like The Count by the way. If Arrow is supposed to be rooted in reality, it is about time they have some villain rooted in reality too.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I actually don't care about the island. The first season island flashbacks were a guaranteed way to stop all momentum in an episode and it all turned it superfluous anyway. Season 2's flashbacks lack tension because we know who makes it out and who doesn't. I'd actually rather they cut out all flashbacks and have someone monologue what happened or have an entire episode devoted to flashbacks so we stop getting them piecemeal. If they are indeed set on having flashbacks in every episode come hell or highwater, then they need to start branching out. The best flashbacks last season was when we got the history of the Undertaking. They could do Blood flashbacks, Slade ones, or how about flashback to what happened immediately after the earthquake. Anything is better than still being on the island.

  47. The thing that initally attracted me to Arrow was the promise that it was going to be grounded. I am thoroughly sick of comic book adaptations. They are everywhere these days. So when Arrow said no superpowers, I was willing to try it. They have now backed out of that promise and into metahumans and I think it is a mistake too. Arrow needs to distinguish itself from the cartoon world, especially with the Flash coming and 6 gazillion movies. My friend Lilith thinks that Mirakuru will wear off eventually so the effects will not be permanent. I sincerely hope she is right.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh, she was used as a plot device. No doubt about that. I still think her personality changes had a clear trajectory though.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Its an issue isnt it? We have never had such direct contact with producers, story writers etc before. We have web series between episodes, talks with writers and producers and so on. People can vent with anonymity for the most part.

Im not of the view that the protagonist of a show has to always be likable, so I guess I kinda do miss that douche of season 1.

My biggest concern is that Arrow will loose the connect ability of the storyline in lieu of super villains etc.

I liked Fyers of last season.. not because he was particularly menacing but because he had drive of purpose. He never seemed at a loss for what to do, and even if WE didn't know what he was about (although we got clues here and there)

By the same token I dont want the Island to become Gilligans Island with each year new people turning up because its the centre of the world.

    ReplyDelete
  50. THIS! Exactly. I'm so sick of being told my desires for the show can't happen because of comic canons that have been so completely bastardized over the years that nothing should be deemed absolute...ever. If they want exactly what happens in the comics, get the movie. On network television, it covers years, hundreds of episodes and human beings/actors are a serious factor for a show's longevity.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ohhhh, we disagree that a Laurel/Felicity scene would build Felicity up. LOL. She's already up. I meant it as a means to build Laurel back up. But we can agree that I hate the thought of my fave sharing a scene with Laurel too.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You're right. I'm ready to pounce the moment I hear they'll kill Sara off to make Laurel Black Canary. I like Sara.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I agree they already built Felicity up.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You won't be the only one. It would be devastating to Laurel's character if they have her take Sara's place. The general fandom is going to have to like Laurel a whole lot more than they do right now before that will do anything but backfire on them. I am not opposed to the two of them fighting alongside each other though, provided they can account for Laurel NOT having ninja skills since she is a civilian.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Tommy, Walter, and Felicity were my favorite characters. It killed me when Tommy died and Walter was only in the premiere this year.

    ReplyDelete
  56. At this point it is clear that they are pandering to Olicity shippers more than comic book fans so I don't think you have to worry about your desires not being addressed.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Warning - standing on my soapbox here: It is my staunchest TV opinion that all show runners, producers, and writers should block ALL of their social media immediately and never listen to what anyone on social media has to say. It has overwhelmingly been a disaster as TPTB increasingly listen to the most vocal, most fanatical fans and are somehow convinced that being the most "in your face" equals the majority. It rarely does. They have ruined show after show by pandering to the loudest Tumblr fans. Suddenly no two people can be just friends on any show ever. Every single TV character must be paired off or part of an endless love triangle. All dramatic tension must come from romance. Such thinking has diluted formerly powerful, intriguing shows and made formerly intelligent, resourceful, interesting characters into stereotypes indistinguishable from all other shows. Social media, while great in many aspects, is now the number one killer of ingenuity and uniqueness on TV. Even Community brought up the insistence of pairing every single cop duo together last week. It is so tiring that I actively search out shows that don't make character pairings a priority and they are getting harder and harder to find. Lazy, lazy writing. No wonder overall ratings on TV have plummented. (Soapbox rant over)

I need to be able to root for a lead character in order to enjoy a show. I could not stomach House or The Mentalist because I found the leads too obnoxious. While Arrow skated that line for me last season, making Oliver more likeable was in my top 5 Arrow wishlist for this season. I do however share your concern about supervillains. Creating better villains is one of the few things that has not come true on my wishlist. The problem with super villains is that you either have to give your hero super powers too (which is likely where Arrow is headed) or defeating the villain winds up being cheesy and/or anticlimactic. Supernatural had this problem when they added angels and Lucifer into the mix. Plus once you go down that route, it is very hard to pull away and return a story back to its basics. I am having issues with Mirakuru as well but hopefully that's just because I have been burned by genre shows before when they overreach.

I was not a fan of Fyers at all. He had no clear motivations and his storyline appears to have been abandoned without any good reason as to why we spent so much time on it. If they don't tie his mission into something bigger, I'm going to want the time I spent on that subplot back. Bascially I hope we get off this island immediately and start in on how Oliver got into the Russian mob, Sara into the League of Assassins, and Slade not dead. My hope is that Amanda Waller gets tied into a Big Bad situation down the line because she brings something only one villain so far has done - an actual plot for Diggle. It would be cool for him to be personally tied to the main villain for a season or two. I'm still waiting for more info on HIVE.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Looks like we will have to disagree on Fyers then. The Russian Mob thing is also something Im looking forward to as well.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Nice, but no. Emily Bett Rickards and screen presence built Felicity up.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Lance and Oliver on the rooftop.

    ReplyDelete
  61. But she did wonder about Blood before the hiatus. Sin, Thea, and Roy came to her about Sin's friend, remember? and Laurel was the one that discovered the connection to Blood.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Walter is returning for at lease episodes 2.12 and 2.13.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I personally love Felicity more this season but I love Sara too.

    ReplyDelete
  64. They even admitted at the recent interview they are aware of the critisim about Laurel and Katie Cassidy. I hope they are not stupid and don't kill Sara for Laurel.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The reason is the Mirakuru messed up Slade's brain. Shado's death was the catalyst. It's a bit more complicated than a love triangle.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I choked on my water I laughed so hard at this.

    ReplyDelete
  67. About Diggle, they already said there's an episode that includes flashbacks of Diggle's time at Afganistan this season that would be tied to the plot. Whether it's connected to H.I.V.E or A.R.G.U.S I don't know but there'll be at least one more Diggle-centric episode this season.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I do remember, but I didn't get the vibe that Laurel was really suspecting something from the scene...to me it read like Laurel basically trusted the guy and just wanted an explanation to ease her mind.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I might be more forgiving in the ham departement due to never expecting this show to be more seirous than Smallville. And yeah 'rooted in reality' doesen't quite speak for recent turns (Flash).
And a show with actors like Grant Gustin that are more monotone and wodden than a piece of wood itself does need ham to balance the underacting out.

Take the perfect over-underacting balance for example: Joseph Morgan and Daniel Gillies. Both are brilliant actors, the one goes over the top shakespearian at times and the other keeps his characters reaction in reality. The one's a definite stage actor while the other is a film actor. And if one of both overdoes his shtick once the other balances him out.

We could have easily had a 'Patrick Logan'-esque performance from Barrowman (kinda shocked that I still know the characters name), he just went Jack Harkness on us wich is good to keep the balance to Amells I_I face.

That being said I get where you're coming from, overactors do hurt the experience at times and I cringe from time to time at Joseph Morgan, Andrew Lincoln, Barrowman, David Tennant, Matt Smith (ultimate overactor), Bruce Campbell, Misha Collins or Kal Penn. When they're bad they're bad but when they're good they're fantastic.

Comes down to personal preference I guess, to know how serious you take a shows universe

    ReplyDelete
  70. If they never listen to what fans want, the show is bound to fail. They can't do what they want without taking into account or consideration what the fans want. That's how tv works. That's how tv has ALWAYS worked. That's what audience is for. That's what polls are for. Even before the internet was big it was still a thing. I agree they can't do EVERYTHING the fans want, especially because groups of fans always want different things, but they can't simply ignore what is working with the audience.

And frankly, your constant complaining of Olicity, when most times have NOTHING to do with the current discussion is getting ridiculous. So the only thing they shouldn't listen to is what you don't want to happen? It makes your entire complaint irrelevant tbh.

    ReplyDelete
  71. She didn't suspect anything until someone pointed it out to her, and it still came out of nowhere because we didn't see Laurel getting suspicious, we saw her all of sudden being onto him.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm glad Walter is returning. I've missed him.

    ReplyDelete
  73. She started investigating as a favor to Thea and then became suspicious when she found out things worth getting suspicious about.

    ReplyDelete
  74. That's the problem of KC's acting.. a good actress would've managed to sell this scene.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I hope Thea finding out about her real dad would make her want to become a vigilante, send her on a rollercoaster.. anything that would give her more focus, and I want to see her getting a Thea-centric episode already.

    ReplyDelete
  76. That's how I took it as well. She seemed to investigate as a favor for Thea but without any real energy behind it. I love how she is actively pursuing this in the the face of everyone else's skepticism. Perhaps she can bring Moira on board as well and the two of them could have some awesome scenes together. I get the feeling that Moira is not snowballed by Blood either.

    ReplyDelete
  77. We could have cut the filler of the bomber not charging sales tax and included some background for Laurel's suspicion instead.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Laurel is my least favorite character. The self pity, and complaining No one loves her is pathetic. I don't want her to be the Black Canary, I prefer Sara Lance.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Social media makes it hard to get a true picture of the fandom as a whole, since it is completely overrun only by the most vocal segments of the fandom. Things felt more balanced before everyone and his Hollywood cousin started getting their feedback primarily from social media, which actually is comprised of a very minute subset of a show's overall fans. The majority of people who like a show still do NOT go on social media to discuss it. By constantly engaging through social media, a small percentage of a show's fans get the majority of the influence. This discussion about fan pandering, which I did not begin, is definitely a place to talk about Olicity since the two biggest groups Arrow panders to are shippers and comic book fans.

    ReplyDelete
  80. The bike chase scene was my favourite

    ReplyDelete
  81. I like it the way it is if you don't like it don't watch its that simple

    ReplyDelete
  82. The CW has a Katie Cassidy fetish, they are desperate to make her a stat. Nothing about Laurel's story make sense. Her face is getting really distracting, and she isnt really the best actor.

I only vote to kill/write her off, nothing is going to make a difference. Its too late.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I loved the entire ending, but in particular I especially liked the revealation that Blood locked up his own mother

    ReplyDelete
  84. That was my favorite part. It makes him more sinister as a character.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Totally, I am really liking the villains this season because they are choosing more obscure villains that they can play around with, with the exception of Cyrus Gold, who I loved on the show, and Deathstroke, who I'm holding out judgement on.
