American Horror Story Coven - 03.11 – Protect the Coven - Review : "Delphine Loveable La Laurie"

Jan 18, 2014

This week new American Horror Story Coven, cleverly titled “Protect the Coven”, was a good installment, before the season finale coming in 2 weeks, but I was a bit disappointed, feeling like things are not moving forward but in circle. I’ll get on that later…
A lot happened in this episode : two characters returned from the dead again ! Can’t someone stay dead on this show ?), several deaths, a painful fall in the stairs, a disturbing self mutilating scene and a shit soup.

This week, Fiona and Marie continued their friendship and decided to take down the Corporation. They played it nicely, and I must say I was surprised by their plan. Hank’s father (I’m terrible at remembering names) called them for a meeting, the witches came and so the heads of each different companies of the Corporation. Negotiations begun, they asked for a truce and their money back.
But the negotiations were cut short when Fiona said they had to stop witch hunting forever or she could just kill them all.. And that what she did, with the help of her lover : Axeman. He posed as a waiter, serving a dirty Martini to Fiona and a Diet Sprite to Marie. Of course, he brought his axe and the meeting room turned into a messy bloody kill room.
I don’t know which scene is my favorite from Marie taking pictures of the dead bodies (and posting them on instagram ? Twitter ?):

Or Fiona killing the father of her daughter’s husband, with her lover’s axe !:

Or Axeman, taking the hand holding a gun he just chopped to shoot another hunter ! :

I can’t pick a favorite, but the scene was great. Hank’s father threatened the witches before dying, apparently war won’t be over but t ha just begun. What did he mean ? They killed The Witch Hunting Corporation, right ? What’s coming next for them ? Anyways I’m glad this storyline is over, it didn’t last much but it always felt a bit stupid and out of place. Witch hunters never were a great threat against the witches. Their deaths were quick.

“Protect the Coven” was mostly about Delphine LaLaurie. Casting Kathy Bates was a brilliant idea. Ryan Murphy previously stated they did not think of Madame LaLaurie’s humanity before they watched Kathy Bates acted. Delphine is a monster, a psychopath and a racist. But, Kathy Bates brought some many layers to Delphine, I really care for her and she has grown on me. She is a racist but she is from another time and she can change. Actually, from the last episodes, Delphine shown some remorse about what she did.
At first, I really enjoyed Delphine’s parts. Her flashback when she just arrived in New Orleans, she was alone, bored and far from home. Cutting a chicken’s head made her happy and so when one of her slaves hurt himself, seeing all that blood made her feel good too. She tied him up and played with him. She was horrible and crazy, we get the point. Now, she has become the maid of the Academy, forced to serve Marie and Fiona. Delphine's monologue was excellent, very powerful and intriguing. We learnt more about her past, discovering she had always been a psychopath, killing animals when she was a child and taking comfort in hearing people screams of pain now. She is deranged.
Watching her being disgusted by her mistresses : the teens sleeping together, Marie playing with a baby, Fiona having seex every night with Axeman, was great and I was disgusted myself when she served them Madison’ shit for dinner. Myrtle’s reaction to Delphine’s soup was priceless. That girl is crazy ! So, when Delphine saw Fiona’s gardener with his hand hurt and bloody, it brought back memories to her. She tied him up and playing with him. By the way, her game of "little piggy" made me think of season 1, that was nice. But I really did not enjoy that part. It’s a real pity for Delphine’ storyline. I guess I really wanted her to redeem herself and find a way to make amends. I honestly believe Delphine can evolve and embrace the new world she is living in now. But apparently, the writers did not and so she went back to torturing a black man.
After that, Delphine found a new ally : Spading ! He is not back from the dead, he’s just a ghost. He has a deal for Madame LaLaurie : he can help her kill Marie and stop her curse if she does something for him. First thing, she gave him an expensive and old doll. Spading is so weird with those dolls, it always gives me the creeps. Anyways he knows Marie’s weakness : …. Benadryl… Yes, that’s her biggest weakness… I was actually laughing watching it. Delphine really believed in it and so, after Fiona left the Coven to get laid with Axeman, Delphine put some Benadryl in Marie’s glass and then tried to stab her, in her heart. Nasty bitch, Delphine !
Of course, Marie did not die (that would have been so easy) but as she ran towards Delphine, Spading came behind her and hit her with his doll. She fell down the stairs, in slow motion, the best fall in the stairs I've watched. Apparently, Marie is really allergic to Benadryl and she is out. She can not die, despite Spading promised to Delphine, but she canfind a way to bury her permanently… And Marie gave her some nice ideas before in the episode. Marie, wake up or you will be trapped foreveeeeer… (I don’t think so). Oh, and Spading wanted Delphine to give him Marie’s baby so now he has a living doll to play with…. That’s just beyond words.

So, Delphine was brought back, her head sew up on her body, with no scars and you can all thank Queenie for that ! Yay Queenie is back ! (with Delphine on a leach in the cemetery . I’m glad she is not dead, she is my favorite with Nan. But now Nan is dead and buried, no Misty Day to revive her.
Queenie’s comeback did not touch the witches much actually. Only Cordelia, always the sensitive one, tried to talk to Queenie. The girl betrayed the Coven for their sworn enemy, she shot herself in the head, left for dead and now she is back, Marie is friend with Fiona ! Of course, she was angry at Cordelia and harsh on her. Queenie pointed Cordelia's weakness and mistakes.
The spiral continues for Delia. Cordelia is weak. Cordelia is useless. Cordelia is stupid. Poor girl, only when she had her visions people were nice to her. So, after attempting some potions to help her regain her power, Cordelia had no other choic, as I predicted, but to cut her own eyes. How disgusting and disgustingthis scene was ! Terrific job Sarah Paulson. I’m sorry but this deserved a screencap !

Ewww… And now, the left one :
    Disgusting !

Cordelia is doing anything to protect the Coven, she is a good witch, too bad she is surrounding with bad witches. Luckily, she’ll always have Myrtle ! And how good was Frances Conroy this week ? I have no words. Honestly, she is the highlight of the season. I love Myrtle Snow, almost as I admire Constance in season 1. She is fabulous, funny, smart and her French is exquisite. Tu es parfaite ma chérie ! Two of her scenes were the best parts of the episode.
First, when Fiona arrived to see Cordelia after her mutilation, Myrtle was waiting at the door. Myrtle saw through Fiona and she called on her lies and manipulations. I loved the way she talked down to her and made her go back. Myrtle is the best ennemy against Fiona. I love their relationship and watching Jessica Lange and Frances Conroy is always a great pleasure.
And then Myrtle had a talk with Zoe. I really like Myrtle’s character, her scenes face to face with another character. She is so crazy and it seems like there is more than one people in her head, it’s quite funny. Myrtle told Zoe to go away with her lover, because she was lucky to find love, Myrtle almost had it once but she lost the man. She offered her a beautiful piece of jewelry, so beautiful Zoe can’t look at it now and also two tickets. Myrtle is a good witch too, as Cordelia. She would have made a better Supreme than Fiona but she is not the one. Just like Madison and Zoe, their rivalry is here and they are both possible next Supreme. But Zoe is good, she found out about Fiona and Marie drowing Nan and she was sad, she cared. Madison did not, the girl can only care for herself. Just like Fiona... Does this mean Madison is the next Supreme ?

I hope she is not… And I hope Zoe is not either. I’m seriously bored with their storylines with FrankenKyle. So, Kyle and Zoe are now in love and Madison is jealous. She attacked Zoe, that’s why Myrtle ordonned Zoe and Kyle to go. And they chose to go. The ending was terrible, watching them smiling and running. Okay they are happy but I don’t want them happy, it’s American Horror Story for God’ sake !
I hope the whole point was just to show Orlando, their destination, as a clue for next year ! We know from the promo for next week that Zoe and Kyle are not going to stay happy and away for a while. As I’ve said before, I’m quite bored with this storyline. It really feels like it’s going nowhere. Okay, Zoe is a black widow, Kyle is dead so they are the perfect match for each other. Madison is the jealous bitch, but Kyle doesn’t even love her. They can be happy couple, a weird couple but their relation is okay. So, what’s the deal ? If Madison tries to kill Zoe for Kyle, it’d be so stupid. I like Fiona and Myrtle rivalry better, at least it’s not over a dead man.
I also had problems with some stuffs in this episode. I enjoyed it overall, I loved the Corporation attack, even if that could have happened last week and Delphine parts were great, expect when she tortured a black man –she could have tried on a white one for a change ; but it’s really starting to feel like the story is not going forward but in circle. Everybody dies and then they come back. It was fun at first but now it feels overdone and there is no surprises. Nan will stay dead apparently, being buried and away with Legba, but we can never be sure. Misty will be back, I’m quite certain about it. She is probably the next Supreme, but we can’t be certain because they all are showing signs, their powers are stronger and not one of them looked stronger than another. This question of the next Supreme has been going on for too long, I wish we could have some real clues. Each week, two of them act like next Supreme.
Each week as well, the witches are changing enemies. One week, they are plotting to kill Fiona and the week after they are attacking each other. Again, it feels like the same pattern happening all over again. It can be interesting, but now I think I had enough and I want something more. I want Fiona to rise and kill everyone or for the Next Supreme to reveal herself and kick Fiona’s ass !
My guess is next week, Fiona won’t survive and a new Supreme will rise so the season finale will be all about the New Supreme and her generation. Those girls better find boys to make babies otherwise, it’s the end of the witches !

Spells Notes :

• I missed my Papa Legba :(
• Who’s the next Supreme ? I’m not sure the writers have set their minds actually. I'll say Queenie.
• What will happen to Marie ? Buried in cement ?
• Will Fiona survive next week episode ?

What did you think of “Protect the Coven” ? Did you totally enjoyed it or did you feel as I did ? Hit the comments and let’s discuss !

  1. Good episode!
And once again, Cordelia sacrificed herself for the Coven which was really sad because I felt like there was only Myrtle who was there for her. Even her mother preferred to go see her lover than her suffering daughter.
But I'm still waiting for the moment when Cordelia becomes the Supreme and kills her mother, that's gonna be one hell of a powerful moment!
Having seen the promo, I think Fiona may die in the twelfth episode but she will be back in the thirteenth... waiting to be killed.
And I really don't care about Marie's fate, she can go to Hell or six feet under, I don't give a damn
Don't worry, our dear Papa will be back next week!
Question for you: Why do you think Queenie's the next Supreme?
    Bonne review comme d'hab!

  2. Cordelia is a great character, she suffers so much every week. But I don't thni she will be the next Supreme. I agree she needs to kill her mother. It's her or Myrtle, I can't imagine any other characters putting an end to Fiona's reign.

Why not caring about Marie's fate ? Marie is a fun and great character. I don't want Delphine to trap her for eternity. Papa Legba should come and get Marie with him, that'd be a nice enending for her.

Well, it's not that I think Queenie will be the next Supreme, it's more what I wish. Queenie would make the perfect Supreme, she is very powerful, fierce and fair. She has a great personnality and I love her attitude. Also, she is from Vodoo and white magic, so she would be the perfect Supreme to seal Fiona and Marie's alliance. I'd have Nan to be the Supreme because she has soft and nice but she is gone. Misty Day is too naive and alone to be a Supreme. Madison and Zoe are terrible choice in my mind.

    Merci ;)

  3. I just don't like the idea of Marie being in this house. She's done a lot to Delphine and to this Coven but still, she gets to live in the house without being threatened at least once. I just think she's an hypocrite you know, when Fiona came to her hairdressing saloon, she said she didn't help, that she could protect her on her own etcetera but once she felt threatened, bam her ass ran toward Fiona's house.
And let's not forget she left Queenie for dead in her saloon.
And concerning Queenie, I have this opposite opinion about her, I don't like her attitude at all, I feel like she takes everything for granted and everyone is her slave because she thinks she's the next Supreme.
Just wait till Cordelia kills you mouhahaha. ( I know that's never gonna happen though huhu.)

  4. It's true, it's weird to see Marie walking down the Coven, having a room when two episode ago, she wanted to kill them all. Fiona only cares for herself, and not for the Coven. She accepted Marie because she thought she could be immortal as well.
I can understand why you dislike Queenie's attitude, but that's what I love about her. She is a strong black woman, fighting for herself in this white world.
Cordelia won't kill her, Queenie is immortal :)

  5. #KillingTheWhiteTrash #DontMessWithWitches #FionaAndIRulingTheWorld those are teh Hashtag she used lol...
it was a great episode Delphine`s background story was great we get to see why she is like that and how she change over the years i felt kind of bad for her cause she was so naive that didnt notice the butler was playing with her but at the same time she got her revenge... im exited to know what is she going to do next and how she is going to act around the others especially with Quinnie after all she was the one that saved her right¿?...
I have the felling that Nan will be back with Legba at the end of the season and she is going to take her revenge on both Fiona and if she is still somewhere Marie, im pretty sure Legba will claim them cause they broke their deal and someway they need to pay...
Sarah Paulson dont have it easy in any season lol i think Ryan loves make her suffer, that scene was intense and somehow my favorite, she wants to help so abd that is willing to do anything to do it, not only for her or for the other witches but for her mom she trying so hard to please Fiona and Fiona can give 2

  6. "Fighting in this white world." I would've agreed to this comment if Queenie were in 1830.
She's like Marie actually. She went to her because she felt like rejected (I think) and she betrayed the Coven but when she came back to the house, she bawled Cordelia out as though it was her fault. I just don't accept that, OK you can be annoying toward people you don't like but Cordelia did nothing to her. Unless if Queenie thought that Cordelia cleaning her room was a betrayal, lol.

  7. Well, Queenie is the only black girl in the Coven, surronded by white witches and even the Academy is all white (furnitures, walls, floors...). So, I can understand she is feeling in minority and so she develops a strong personnality.
Cordelia is supposed to protect the girls in the Coven, she didn't find a way to keep Queenie with them, she has too busy being played by her husband or trying to get rid of her mother, and she didn't even try ot get her back.
Queenie was harsh but still she had a point. Cordelia lost Queenie, Misty Day is gone, Nan is dead. Almost every witches in the coven died or disparreared while Delia was looking after them. I like Cordelia but she is weak.

  8. LOL, i wish they had shown Marie's hashtags but I think your picks are close ones !
I agree, Delphine's backsground story was great, I also felt bad for her when Spading played her but she is a psychopath. I have no idea what she is going to do with Marie's body now and how Fiona and the witches will react when they find out.
I hope Nan is with still with Papa Legba and they will claim Marie and Fiona for all the warm they done over the years.
Yeah, you're right, it looks like Ryan Murphy liks to make Sarah Paulson's character suffer. Last year was horrible for Lana Banana and this year Cordelia is going through hard stuffs too. But, in a way, I don't Cordelia to become strong and powerfull. I like her weak and suffering haha

  9. I've never paid attention to the house's walls, you scored a point on this one!
Well, we all know that if Cordelia had overprotected the girls, the girls would've been like "Excuse-me bitch, I can take care of myself."
Well, Nan was killed by the Supreme so I don't think she could do something ya know..
I don't think she's weak though that's what the writers/producers want us to think about her. Because Cordelia is the headmistress of the Coven and I don't think she was chosen because she was weak. Or maybe she's been hiding her power to the girls...I just don't know! We'll just have to wait and see till the Seven Wonders...
I guess I'll see you in 2 weeks for the review of the Seven Wonders.............. :)

  10. Okay, we will see in two weeks if Cordelia is really weak or all the hard stuffs happening to her this season transformed her.

I can't wait for the season finale !

  11. Yep, we'll also see what happens to Queenie and the other girls...
I really think I'll watch the twelfth episode the night before the thirteenth airs.

  12. Some of the things I have been thinking I know were put in to make us think they are what I call false "flags" or incase they wanted to branch out for other stories other directions. Like as you pointed out Marie always taking pictures of the murders? What if in the end she planned to screw over Fiona stop her from living forever. The truce is and or was just a game to get her into the house. She is secretly aligned with the head of the Witch hunters, she could easily bring them all back from the dead too with Voodoo or protect them from actually dying in the first place. The story about Luke, Joan what exactly was the point to that again? It felt like it was not even part of the overall story just filler, like the Delphine LaLaurie, Axman, subplots to provide the Horror to American Horror Story while the Drama was in the Coven story. When you look at this season like that you see that its been to me a major disappointment, some drama, mostly "Horror Filler" then more Drama, no substance, nothing likable or redeemable about any of the characters. It's like the writers were stoned, or drinking heavily while piecing this story together with no idea what they wanted the final story to be, so they cobbled it together. When they could not come up with horror related to the Witched they tossed Delphine LaLaurie, at us. Then when that was over used they tossed Axman at us, then back to the Witches and Cordelia accident now self mutilation. No story direction, no idea what, where, when, how, who, the basics, just more or less word salad with cheap "French" dressing and some gore on the side! And it's not from a fine sit down dining restaurant it's more the fast food variety at that, the way it's been cobbled or knocked together in a deep fat fryer to make all the subplots, stories, fit together and not mest into one interesting storyline. You can only use the it's American Horror Story it does not have to make sense, or it breaks all the rules even it's own to pass off poor writing, poor ideas, poor development. This season had so many interesting possibilities but look what we ended up with, an fight over who gets to be top dog, everything else all falls away all the other possible stories at trash it's a Btch fight over a bone. Not even five minutes was spent on the Salem history, the trip from Salem to NO, the real history of the Coven, the Bloodlines, it's family members through the ages. I could go on and on about everything they should of done and screwed up, like the origins of the individual powers, there are male witches but no mention of them. In one of my other posts I brought up if Luke should've been a Warlock, or Joan a witch but aligned with the Witch hunters not a religious GOP TP Party nut case? What brought all that into her, her story? Parallel lines could be shown between the Coven, and Christians other Religions the extent they have gone to protect themselves, infiltrated Governments, started war's, lie, manipulate, murder, one if the name of their God AKA Money, the Coven in the name of self protection staying alive. This is getting way too long will stop here, but I hope that you can see my point this season in my mind has been all fluff and a waste of good talent for nothing. Glad FX/Ryan and CO has the cash to toss away, Can't wait to see how big of a wad they blow on next season since its Jessicas last one. Will probably break the bank it it's like this one could be the very last episode on American horror Story if they don't up their game. People are getting sick of the same excuses and bad writing or at least I am. I stopped watching last season still have not watched all of it after the third episode. I have no plans to "Catch" up on what I missed according to reviews I did myself a favor. Gave this season a shot not sure the next one is going to get a first watch at all.

  13. I hope the supreme is Cordelia. The storyline has made her rather useless.

  14. I think Fiona should just rise get to live forever and kill them all or just put them in their places. They're all too annoying and too whiny. It's so annoying. And Cordelia is the most annoying of them all. No, she is not doing everything for the coven, she just wants to prove to her mother that she can control the coven.
What powers does she have other than the that one she has when she's blind? Nothing! I really don't like her.

  15. There's this lovely thing called "paragraphs." Reading this novel would have been more of a delight if you had incorporated paragraphs. That is all.

  16. Actually I did put them in but was in a hurry to get things done, Spellcheck app in Chrome loves to remove them. But just for you I will fix them make it all better the way it was originally intended so others can read it and not have issues with it.
