Luke Grimes, who joined the HBO hit in Season 6 as Jessica’s (Deborah Ann Woll) brooding, soulful vamp-camp lover James, has unexpectedly left the series, TVLine has learned exclusively.
When reached for comment, an HBO spokesperson confirmed Grimes’ exit, saying, “The role of James is being recast due to the creative direction of the character.”
Grimes’ rep declined to comment, but a source close to the Brothers & Sisters alum tells TVLine that the actor asked to be let out of his contract after he learned what producers had in store for James in Season 7. “He initially joined the show because he wanted to work with [his Forever co-star] Deborah Ann Woll,” says the insider. “But when he started reading the scripts for Season 7, he was disappointed to learn that they were going in a completely different direction with James.”

ReplyDeleteI can understand not enjoying the direction your character is going in, but leaving the show because you don't agree with it is kind of...ridiculous. Great actors can take a bad character, or a bad plot for that character, and still make it compelling. That's just one of the many things the separate great actors from merely decent ones.
ReplyDeleteumm...yeah...if you commit to a series you stick with it until your story is properly finished. That's a unwritten rule.
ReplyDeleteRecast him with a lookalike and kill him off in the VampZombie attack
Disappointing. Obviously it's hard to really judge his decision without seeing where "James" goes, but unless it's really really violent or something against every fiber in his being, I think he should of stuck with it for our sakes :/
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I never really gave a damn about his character anyway. This being the final season, I'd prefer that there are fewer newbies around to take screen time away from the core characters.
ReplyDeleteI liked him. Boo.
ReplyDeletei totally agree!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt would be great to cast François Arnaud from "The Borgias" :) He's a very talented actor.
ReplyDeleteSigh, this sounds like True Blood. Setting something up, then going in a completely different direction that doesn't make sense. Who knows, maybe he's just pissed because he gets killed off fast. Let's be honest, who wouldn't be pissed about not being able to work with Woll.
ReplyDeleteWell, that doesn't sound like a happy ending for Jessica and James. Maybe James become one of the VampZombies.
ReplyDeleteBut Jessica is not meant to be with him but for Jason, the guy should`ve know that !... I acn only guess that the way they were getting the character throught thes easonw as not something he enjoyed so he decided to leave...
ReplyDeleteSeriously?!?! I liked James!! Not necessarily for Jessica, i just liked him in general, and Luke Grimes was sexy! I was hoping he'd have a good storyline, and we'd get a little more of his background. Geez! This is the last season and they recast him?? I think that's pretty stupid. I mean ok yeah we didn't get a lot of him, blah blah blah, but that doesn't mean there weren't admirers for his character. I saw a lot of people take a liking to him, smh shame shame shame. And wtf?? what is so traumatizing to his character that he feels the need to leave?? I mean other than death, i don't see the big deal. And even with dead (if that's the direction he's going in) so what?? This is TB characters in the show happen all the time!! The only thing i could think of is maybe they actually did make his character a rapist?? Then again i doubt it. They already went through that BS with Franklin, idt they'll go that route again. Ugh! W/e this sucks either way.
ReplyDeleteI really think they should drop the character altogether after this
ReplyDeletefeels like the show has an overextended cast as it is, and with only 10 episodes left I prefer more focus on the main characters.
Wow, i can't imagine how many actors would be thrilled to be on such a successful series. Any series..
ReplyDeleteI hate when it happens
