The Mentalist - Episode 6.09 - My Blue Heaven - Review

NOTE: Please be advised that English is not my first language.

The Mentalist makes a jump of two years in the future and everything has changed for our beloved characters.
Patrick Jane is far away from Sacramento in a hot place near to Paradise. He's speaking spanish, but it's still poor, he's made some friends in the neighborhood, and sometime he writes some romantic letters for a special 'friend'...
Kim Fisher is introduced in this episode. She catches Jane's eyes and they start talking about their lives (pay attention: she's reading a mystery novel), his wedding ring and stuffs. This is just my opinion but at first Fisher's character didn't catch my attention like she did with Jane. Maybe I need a little more episodes with her before judging, because I haven't already formed an opinion. Anyway, I think Jane knew who she was since the first time he looked at her. I'm still surprised by his expression when he see Kim as 'agent Fisher' in Abbott's office. Did he really know she was an agent or not?

Meanwhile, life goes on in the United States. Teresa Lisbon is now a sceriff in a little town in Washington. I really enjoyed the scene at school where she teaches some kids on how to be a good cop. When one of the kid asks if she ever killed someone, Lisbon brutally answers 'yes', causing them to gasp! That was definitely one of my favorite scenes. Agent Dennis Abbott didn't stop chasing Patrick Jane. I was surprised he showed up into Lisbon's office just 2 years later the end of Red John, since he stated "You two were so close." Lisbon lies when Abbott asks her if she heard about Jane. Everyone understood how much Jane and Lisbon are close. It became so obvious. Of course, Abbott doesn't trust Lisbon and the proof is the seashell on her desk.
Lisbon has been busy with the law and hanging out with Rigsby and Van Pelt. The two are not a happy couple with a child, and they're running a digital security firm. I smiled when I heard Rigsby call 'boss' Lisbon. She smiles too, answering "I'm not your boss." I like this new version of nostalgic Teresa Lisbon. She still misses the CBI.

Those are not the only things Lisbon usually does in the night. She's been keeping all the letters Jane wrote to her, and she reads them while drinking a good glass of wine in front of the fire. How romantic was that?
It seems like a coincidence that while we see Lisbon as a 'woman in love from a classical Hollywood movie', Jane is dancing and having fun with Kim - he even took his wedding ring off for that occasion! He clearly wants to feel free and he's ready to go on with his life. Eventually, Abbott tracks down Jane (thanks to "letters to your girlfriend, Lisbon", Abbott is smart and witty) in order to make him an offer he can't refuse: work for the FBI. Jane drops the offer since he's done with that life, but Kim may give him the right imput to accept that job. He looks to an old man in the bar; he doesn't want to end up like that, being alone and with no purpose in his life. So he grabs a paper and start writing his terms for Abbott. In a very Jane-stylish, he sets up an appointment with Abbott and his agents at the hotel, but it's a plan to catch some drug dealers indeed. Jane will be back to U.S. but at his terms; Abbott pretends to read them and the he signs the paper.

When he goes back to U.S., in Austin (Texas) actually, at the FBI Headquarter Jane is surprised to find Kimball Cho who's a federal agent now. Cho seems cold with Jane, always with that sarcasm in his voice (he asks Jane about his socks), but after he points his former collegue the way to Abbott's office, he turns back and he's smiling at him. In his way, the old good Cho is happy to see some familiar faces around there.
Jane is soon reunited with Lisbon. They have time to joke around his beard, hug and say how much they've missed each other. I saw a different Jane. He's changed a lot. This is a Jane ready to live and love again, maybe he starts to shine a little more from the moment he saw Lisbon sitting in that room. He's never been so happy to see his best friend. I can't use the word 'lover' yet, but from the way Jane is looking at her, they way he hugs her tightly, I'm sure he can't take his eyes off of her. Looks never lie.
Agent Abbott agrees to accept Jane in the team, but not at Jane's terms; he wants Lisbon in the team, otherwise he won't accept the job and they can arrest him, if it's necessary. Lisbon is upset and she's right: she has a job and can't drop everything just because he decides to come back. Then Kim appears as Agent Fisher and a funny moment comes when Lisbon looks a little upset by her and how Jane refers to the agent as 'Kim.'
I don't think Kim Fisher is a love interest for Jane. She was sending to South America to find Jane and bring him back to his old life. That's all. Jane and Lisbon have to figure out what they mean for each other and with this episode, I think they've just walked into the right path.

  1. Exactly! Two seasons ago? maybe.
Now? No thanks, we want Jane and Lisbon together. There's no need to shake things up,

  2. thanks for the comment. I think Jane and Lisbon have always been the core of the show and this episode just showed once more how much they mean for each other. I love TM 2.0!

  3. This is a crime show. There's no need to shake things up and create a love triangle.

  4. God no, no love triangle, please. And I know it´s a crime show, I don´t wanna see a full blown romance or anything, just... I don´t know.

  5. Please don´t count me into that "we" thank you.

  6. Does everyone who watch this show want Jisbon together? Really? Huh.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Nobody wants a Castle situation here (no offense, I love that show as well), it just wouldn't fit. But a little bit of Jane and Lisbon romance, well done and subtle would be nice :)

  8. Castle situation? Huh? Sorry, don´t watch that show. Eh, to each their own. Never liked the idea of Jisbon.

  9. I don't think she is a love interest. She was there to bring Jane back. I'm sure that Jane will mess with the FBI and not agree to their terms. I love the new direction the show is going in. Jane was his old self.

  10. Just looked the episode again. Then i freezed where Jane sings the mail. So here´s what i could read:

1 Paragraph was out of focus and I was not able to read is. Only a bit of the last line:

"...would be foolish not to ... you..."

    2. Paragraph

"I´ve found a taylor. Yep a real bespoke (missing word)
of thing of explan what I want. He doesn´t (missing word)
and then he does it anyway. Despite his sometimes
poor taste his work is excellent. I think you might
be suprised of the look. Maybe one day you´ll get
to see it. Let´s just say, I´ve gone native."

    3. Paragraph

"I´ve been meaning to apologize for leaving you
on the beach that night. You beeing absent is
the one thing that made this new chapter
    strange and sad.

Miss you (I could´nt read his singature. Written to weak)"

    So your thoughts?

  11. If you go onto the fandom...have to say yes, it might be better for you to watch on your own. Pretty much The Mentalistas are primarily Jisbon-about 98% of them. If you go on there and say your opinion about this (while valid! you have a right to them :) ) be prepared to be flamed.

  12. I think they said on tvline, that after catching Red John, it may be the best thing that has ever happened to Lisbon's love life, so im hoping its going to be more intense Jane and Lisbon flirting with them admitting feelings.

I hope there is no love triangle, but a bit of jealous could create some great scenes. It might force them to come forward with their feelings.

Lisbon may not control Jane, but she is the closest to.

  13. For the first four years of TM I was not a Jane and Lisbon shipper, but then I was. Now that I see the romantic potential between them I'm so in love with the idea. This ship has made TM my favorite show rolling all over NCIS and Bones. I so want these characters to find romance with one another.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Agreed. Jealousy is meh but please no triangles.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Kim is so boring. I actually hate her.
She needs to go away or at least realize she has no chance with Jane.
The only good, I can see coming from Kim is helping Jane realize he loves Lisbon.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I really doubt she actually wants him.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Being a non-shipper is so lonely.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Why do you think that? I could totally see her falling for him.
    I hope you're right.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I disagree, but then again I'm not the shipping type.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Mainly because she was playing a cover, she's an FBI agent (meaning it wouldn't be good to get involved with a criminal), and because of her behaviour in the promo. But mostly the first.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Her behaviour in the promo? I got a completely different vibe from her in the promo. She seemed to me like she was intrigued and that she would be into him.

    ReplyDelete
  22. then disagree all you want. Your opinion is valid. I for one, want the characters I have been watching to be happy. Over the series it has been shown time and time again that Jane makes Lisbon happy. Lisbon makes Jane happy. When you see the happiness in Jane and Lisbon's faces when he enters the room and sees Lisbon, that is love right there, that is happiness-it is their happiness. So I support these character's choices becausethey deserve happiness. Jane wants someone "who can see the worst sides of him and still love him", he writes to Lisbon in romantic, poetic letters "your absence makes this final chapter sad and strange." Lisbon then reads them because just the written words on the page remind her of his voice and she smiles, because he makes her happy, she loves him. She did everything for him because he is it for her. People watch television dramas for primarily two reasons 1) characters 2) plot. What keeps viewers watching? They care about the characters and what happens to them (plot). So yes, it is strange if someone likes a show and have been presented with what makes those characters happy and don't agree with it, because then why are they watching it? Why do they feel those characters should be denied what is written as important to their happiness? Why does anyone want Jane and Lisbon to be unhappy? This is what has been presented as keys to their happiness. Using that logic and saying "I don't want Jane and Lisbon together" also for me, is the same as saying "I do not want Jane to catch Red John". So that is why I find it strange.

    ReplyDelete
  23. See I find that strange, as I see that as merely strong platonic not romantic love.

    ReplyDelete
  24. then thats fine. In my view; no one writes letters almost everyday, risks their career, and leaves a country with no extradition laws for "platonic friendship or love". I find your view strange.

    ReplyDelete
  25. actually he has said that NUMEROUS TIMES they are in love in the past two years of interviews. He has said that the romance were "emerge gradually and slowly" is the words he used. He also says that they didn't realize it and once the dust settles they will think of each other in a way they have not before. Simon Baker said the same thing. So that comment in utterly unfounded. Look at TVGUIDE, you will see them.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's fine, everyone can think whatever they want :) anyway, in season 1, Heller said there wasn't supposed to be a romance between Jane and Lisbon, but after seeing the chemistry between the two characters, there may be a possibility in the future. And lately, Heller himself said that after Red John, Jane and Lisbon can look at each other in a different way.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Like Graydon said, I think it was just a cover being interested in him. Well, let's see. Anywaym you don't need to worry: Kim won't mess with Jane and Lisbon ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well said, Lucy.

I do want them together but if you don't, Graydon and Marlene, that's okay. There are plenty of series where I don't ship. Most of them, really. So I understand. But I really feel Jane and Lisbon belong together so I do.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I dunno, the look on her face when she said " I thought I had him figured out" kind seemed like she was intrigued. But then again, she is his boss and she may not want to date someone who may be charged with homicide (Weird to think that technically he is a murderer). Plus, Lisbon and Jane have to get together.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If the relationship arc ends anywhere close to the red john arc, it doesn't really matter anyway. In the end Jane will marry an unknown girl we briefly saw in season 1, without any story or explanation involved.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well lets hope its nothing like the Red John episode.
Personally, don't think that will happen.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jane and Lisbon: welcome to a new Grey's Anatomy spin off... The show has been fantastic without it for 5 season, why it now meeds to focus on this relationship is something I cannot and never will grasp. Oh well, people want love stories so even great shows have to obey to this rule. Such a pity.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why strange? I don't like that idea too. Too obvious, too simple, too thin. The Mentalist has been a great show for so many reasons which have nothing to do with silly love stories. Rigsby and Van Pelt was more than enough.
The show has become huge because it was wit, dramatic and funny too, not because of the so-called "Jisbon": it's not an opinion, it's a fact ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh, I don´t find it strange, I was being sarcastic. Some fans of this show look at you like you are crazy if you say that you don`t like Jisbon.

Agree with everything you wrote in your comment.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well, I am a strange human being.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That is excellent and the best best best reponse ever :) ahahah, i am killing myself laughing. Good on ya! :D (I'm not being sarcastic here).

    ReplyDelete
  37. My explanation is why we do.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hope you didn´t die, would hate to have caused that :) As you should, you have a right to your own opinion, and it was very well funded.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes, and you where very polite about it, thank you. Others, not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I do hope that Kim is meant to be a love interest for Jane.Would shake some things up a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks for the review. I think you totally nailed it - especially the Jane/Lisbon part. Cant wait to see where this is going. Love the new funnier and brighter Mentalist 2.0 so far!

    ReplyDelete
  42. The fact that she managed to trick him would just draw Jane in further.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I hope to god she's not... and it's far too late in the game for the need to "shake things up".

    ReplyDelete
  44. I liked the old mentalist better.
