State of Broadcast Networks - A Look at the 2013/2014 Fall TV Numbers

27 Dec 2013

Hey guys!

Here I am for a new article! However, because we've finished our first look at all the broadcast shows that are currently airing that are up for renewal (we'll revisit them in the future), today's article will be a bit different. Today I've decided to shut up a bit more than usual and simply present you with a bunch of statistics that I thought could be interesting. I will present three different sets of stats: first we'll see the ranking of shows per category (Drama or Comedy within Network X) in relative terms, then the overall ranking of shows in the broadcasts in absolute terms and then, finally, the performance of returning shows compared to their performance a year ago.

Before I start though, please bear in mind that although ratings are of huge importance when deciding on renewal, they are not the whole story. As I explain every week, there are other factors (such as syndication) involved, which is why it doesn't mean that just because show X is higher on the ranking here than show Y it will automatically have a higher chance of renewal. Having this clarified, let's now kick it off,

Nothing that is really surprising for anyone that follows ratings remotely close I would say. I think it's interesting that in almost all categories there is a clear leader that is very much ahead of the rest of the pack (Modern Family, Scandal, The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, New Girl, The Blacklist). Other than that, no big remarks here.

TOP SHOWS,
2013/2014 FALL
(Note: All averages are calculated using all airings from fall. As always, Friday airings are considered with a 20% factor.)

This is the kind of thing that I am usually more reluctant to give any meaning to because there are just so many apples and oranges comparisons. There are a few broad messages still somewhere in here though:
  • The Big Bang Theory clearly belongs in another Universe.
  • A lot of shows that have been called disappointments are still huge performers.
  • The Blacklist takes the crown both as the highest rated freshman show and as the highest rated drama, both of which are extremely impressive. It's also the only NBC show to crack the Top 15!
  •  Hawaii Five-0 and Grimm take the crowd for top Friday show, even though I am excluding Bones and I suspect that one will soon steal the crown from both of them.
  • The CW, as much as it has improved, is still very much in the bottom of things, with their highest rated show settling for #51 on the list. However, it is notable how many programs are now less than 0.5 away from them, something that would have been impossible a few years ago. Interestingly though, this is both a result of the others weakening as it is of the CW strenghtening.
Ranking of Returning Shows in terms of Year-Ago Performance,
Fall 2013
(Note: When I say a show is doing good or bad in this section,I mean exclusively in terms of comparisons with last year's numbers.A show can be down 50% and still be doing decently in terms of ratings just as a show can be even year to year and still be likely to be cancelled)

The Monsters
1. Scandal: +40%(!!)
2. Chicago Fire: +31%
3. Supernatural: +19%

These three shows are the ones that completely defy the logic of broadcast network performers, which on average tend go down more than 10% per year! You simply do not see this kind of behavior unless there are some extraordinary circumstances involved. Is that the case with these three? Scandal is without a doubt one of the biggest stories of the last TV years and is truly a monster in every sense of the word. As expected as this growth was due to the fact that its Spring was much higher rated than its fall, this is still a very impressive accomplishment. Chicago Fire is another huge gainer. Although many tend to undervalue this due to the voice exposure, I would argue that probably part of this growth is organic as well due to the fact that, much like Scandal, the show was also pulling numbers last spring that were much higher than its fall ones. I am not denying the existence of a voice-induced boost, but I think the numbers would still be higher than the ones it had last fall. Then we have Supernatural, a show which I don't think even it's most hardcore fans anticipated exploding like this. I don't even recall an instance in which a show in its 9th season grew ~20% year to year without any huge lead-in to attribute that to and after such a successful year for the show as it was its run on Wednesday last year.

The Ones Breaking the Trend
4. Law and Order: SVU: +6%
5. Castle: +5%
6. The Big Bang Theory: +2%
7. How I Met Your Mother: -3%
8. Blue Bloods: -4%
9. Bones: -5%

This group consists of shows that, for one reason or the other, are all having great seasons (don't fool yourself into thinking that the standard of having an awesome season is to inch up as much as the 3 shows from the first group did). Blue Bloods and, especially, SVU are probably not very representative here because their premiere numbers were much higher than anything they were pulling last year (especially for SVU, as it was also a double episode), but they are still having very decent seasons regardless. We also have a couple of rock-solid procedurals in Bones and Castle that I think are even more impressive than they look due to the adversities they are facing (move to Friday and lead-in collapse), we have a final season induced How I Met Your other and we have the biggest broadcast show getting even bigger with The Big Bang Theory!

The Average
10. NCIS: -9%
11. The Mindy Project: -12%
12. NCIS LA: -13%
13. Grimm: -13%
14. Arrow: -13%
15. Last Man Standing: -13%
16. The Middle: -13%
17. Grey's Anatomy: -14%
18. The Vampire Diaries: -15%
19. The Good Wife: -16%
20. The Mentalist: -16%

This is where we go from good to "we'll just have to take it" level. Some of these drops are fairly well explained by isolated instances though. Grimm, for instance, was inflated due to the Monday episodes it aired last summer earlier in the year. Grey's Anatomy and The Vampire Diaries were inflated last year due to cliffhangers from the previous season (the aftermath of the plane crash and Elena becoming a vampire), whereas Last Man Standing was also inflated in opening weeks when it was first paired with Malibu Country on Fridays. Even returning shows like Arrow and Mindy Project, which are sophmores, are still what we can consider healthy in terms of year to year trend, as the decline could be attributed to earlier than normal ratings in the opening weeks of Season 1. Bottom line: although shows from this group aren't spectacularly healthy returnees and most could do better, there are usually circumstances that justify the poorer than advisable performance; and it's not like the drops are that massive either.

The Already Ugly Drops
21. Modern Family: -19%
22. New Girl: -19%
23. CSI: -19%
24. Criminal Minds: -19%
25. Mike and Molly: -20%
26. Nashville: -21%
27. Hawaii Five-0: -21%
28. Elementary: -24%

Here it's where we get to a group in which it's already ugly and which there are little attenuating circumstances going for this show. I suppose one can argue that Elementary was inflated in the opening weeks last year and that it lost its high rated compatible lead-in this year and that H50 is showing the Friday move here (even though all my numbers are corrected with a Friday factor already), but other than that, it's mostly bad year to year performances anyway we look at it.

The Awful Cases
29. Nikita: -27%
30. 2 Broke Girls: -27%
31. Hart of Dixie: -29%
32. Parenthood: -29%
33. Parks and Recreation: -30%
34. Person of Interest: -30%
35. The Carrie Diaries: -31%
36. Once Upon a Time: -32%
37. Glee: -33%

There are the bad year to year performances from the group before and then there are the awful performances of the shows in this group. Falling more than 25% year to year is bad anyway we look at it. This being said, I wouldn't actually hold it against any show in this group other than Glee, 2 Broke Girls and, to a smaller extent, Once Upon a Time, because all the other shows have been moved to arguably worst timeslots this year (except for Nikita, which was moved to a lower viewing time of the year anyway). I do think that shows like Hart of Dixie, Parenthood, Parks of Recreation and Person of Interest should have held up a bit better than they did when moved, which means their numbers wouldn't probably look as dire as they look here if they hadn't been moved, but the fact still stands that these are some truly awful performances. Glee and 2 Broke Girls are just pulling awful year to year performances anywhere we look at it.

The Downright Terrible
38. Revenge: -38%
39. Two and a Half Men: -41%
40. The Neighbors: -43%
41. Raising Hope: -49%
42. Revolution: -52%
43. Beauty and the Beast: -56%

Finally, we have a group of 6 shows that are performing close to 50% below what they were doing last year. Except for Revenge though, these are also shows that all have been moved to what are much worst timeslots, which excuses the performances to some extent. As for Revenge (and OUAT while we're on it), this is sort of the opposite of Scandal in the sesnse that we all saw it coming afer the spring ratings last year, but this is still pretty awful regardless.

Well guys, that will be it for today! I hope you find some of these interesting to know. I will try to be back before the TV season resumes to take a look at each of the broacdaster's midseason plans. In the meantime, I am happy to hear from you in the comments below, as always! Happy New Year and thanks for reading!

  4. Thanks for reading and stopping by. As for Supernatural, I have to agree! I had never watched the show before. Last summer I started watching and went until the middle of the first season but ended up stopping when the regular season came in and I didn't have time. But now I am on Christmas break and I've resumed it. I am very addicted to it. I am currently in the middle of Season 2 and I am really digging it. The two guys do a wonderful job, really good in their roles! I have so much to catch up with now!

  8. The pilot of SPN hooked me, and to me it seemed Jared & Jensen had their characters down pat from the get go and it just kept getting better. Of course David Nutter did direct the first 2 eps and that never hurts. ;)

  9. I like the pilot and the beginning but I am liking it more as I go along, although I think that's more because I have grown to be more attached to the brothers.

  11. Really interesting article/breakdown. So happy to see Bones getting the credit it deserves for doing so well on Fridays. Looking forward to a Season 10 renewal.

  12. Thank you for reading and stopping by, I am glad you found it interesting. As for Bones, I agree - the show is a case study of resilience, it's amazing what it's able to do despite everything it has endured. I feel proud as fan of the show!

  13. interesting article i liked how everything was broken down in terms of renewal as for revenge even though its at a certain renewal due to syndication i'm still pretty worried about how the new time slot will affect its ratings and whether or not the new show before it will succeed or fail, because if it indeed fails then it will drag down revenge

  14. Great job, I like knowing this kinda of info for my favorite shows. I'm so sad about Revolution though. I'm afraid it won't get picked up for another season but I love there story so much. The ratings just are not there I don't think; hopefully I'm wrong.

  15. Great article! Fun to read.
SO happy for TBBT and Scandal, my current favorite comedy and drama!

I wish Carrie Diaries would fare better, it's a good, heart-warming show. Same for Mindy Project, the second season has improved A LOT.
The Crazy Ones & Trophy Wife are my favorite new comedies along with B99, so I hope these two do better too. Totally happy for Blacklist, Sleepy Hollow and Originals!
Excited about POI, Castle, The Middle, Last Man Standing, Grimm and many other shows that I watch which are placed in tier 1 though.

  16. Awww!! You're on season 2 of SPN, that's so cute! Haha. I haven't met a newb for that show in yrs. You definitely have a lot to catch up on. You'll enjoy the seasons as you go on. (And yes u might even tear up some happy and sad) The perfomances are great. I can't wait til you get to season 3 and 4. Happy watching. = )

  17. Well, i am very happy for TTBT, and SH...Not surprised about T.O. at all. Glee i'm not worried about since the next season will be it's last. As for Bones, being a fans for yrs, i was sure this was the last season, especially since last i heard D.B. said he wouldn't renew his contract for season 10. Soo i have no idea how they're going to swing that. I was hoping they wrap it up now. SPN, i never thought they'd reach ten seasons. They really need to go out with a bang. New Girl is holding on strong, so i'm good. I'd like them to have 5 seasons. TVD contracts are up til season 6, if it goes passed 6, maybe 7, i'll be pleased. But if not, i'll be ok, but still very sad. Keeping hope alive for TTP.

  19. Very interesting and enjoyable read, thanks for putting the status of all these shows into a comparable perspective. PoI's rather big downturn came as a surprise to me, I think the current season is way better than S2. But quality is not always reflected by viewing numbers. I'm also happy to see that apart from Almost Human all my favorite shows appear to be safe.

  20. Oh YES, Sam & Dean are like members of my family now and I have laughed and cried with and for both of them. My favorite season is 4, but my favorite ep is the season 5 finale, Swan Song, heck I start crying in that one the ep before because I know what is coming. lol You are in for a treat, keep us posted as you go along.

the second season of Beauty and the beast is amazing but it has a bad airing on monday because with the reinterpretations his rating grows of 100%.Do not forget it is broadcast in Canada on Sunday night and many people watch it on streaming. The Nielsen ratings have many gaps

  22. Nice stuff! Neat and comprehensive article. I'm really happy about Scandal. One of the few things, maybe even the only thing (LOL), Paul Lee has done right.

  23. Nice job, Omabin! Thanks for putting it all together. I keep seeing The Blacklist on top of every list. I should proberbly give it another try. The pilot didn´t do a whole lot for me.

  24. Slight fall for H50 but I'm happy it's likely to renewed I agree Friday night move has been great at first I did doubt it but when you hear it from the showrunner you had to believe him because he knows how the numbers will come out :D I'm happy just hoping for an early S5 pickup so I can start bookking my tickets for SOTB5 in Hawaii in September 2014

  31. I love reading articles like this, it's always interesting to know just how good or bad a show is doing (and whether or not they stand a chance of being cancelled). Most the shows I watch are doing extremely well, Supernatural, Sleepy Hollow, The Walking Dead (I don't know what the rating were like for that, but I think they were extremely good), Doctor Who... It's a shame about Once Upon A Time though, their ratings haven't really stop going down this season.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm with NatesMama and so happy about Bones. :) A couple questions, though.

    1. Do you think it would at least be even with last last year (instead of -5%) if it hadn't moved to Fridays and the last 3 episodes got a least a 2.0?

    2. Is there a difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2 in the bottom table? Sorry if that's a stupid question.

  38. Hey @Sarah! Glad to see you around, thanks for stopping by.

    As for your questions:
    1. Keep in mind that all the Friday airings are already somehow corrected for the Friday thing because I multiply the numbers by 20%. This means that, for instance the 1.7 that Bones got in the last Friday airing is being counted as if it was a 2.04 (which is in line with what it was doing on Monday anyway). This being said, Bones would be down -2% if we exclude the last 3 episodes aired (which were the Friday episodes). I still think that regardless of whether it is -2% or -5% it is still a pretty big victory, as it is up in "real terms" (as in, if you consider the general decline of broadcast viewing).

    2. Yes, there is a difference, even though in most cases there isn't an absolute clear one. Both are composed by shows that I say are fairly more likely to be renewed than cancelled, which is what matters. However, shows from Tier 2 are shows that can more easily drop to Bubble (Tier 3) than those from Tier 1. Typically, that's because the ratings level is not that far off from Bubble (Elementary, H50, Revenge, Hart of Dixie), new shows whose trend seems to be good enough but could change easily (Shield, B99) or shows that are old enough for me to have a reasonable amount of doubt about the costs/ contracts negotiations involved at the current rating level (Bones, Grey's, CSI, SVU). If you are new to these articles I've been doing, I've talked about Bones before in greater length here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/12/rating-analysis-state-of-fox-and-nbc.html . Check it out and let me know if you have any further questions! I think the show is pretty safe, no worries ;)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey there! Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words, I am glad you enjoyed it. As for Revenge, I've written about it in greater detail on this article here, check it out: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/rating-analysis-state-of-abc-dramas.html. I explain there why I think Revenge is a likely renewal. This being said, I do agree that if Ressurection really fails it could bring Revenge down with it and put it at a ratings' level that makes syndication not enough to save it. However, I don't think that's a very serious possibility, if only because I believe that if Ressurection is that big of a flop ABC will simply switch them back as they have a bigger interested vetted in Revenge.

  40. Hey there! Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words! Regarding Revolution, I am totally in love with the show this year - it was okay last year, but this year they've improved sooo much, I am totally addicted to it. As for its fate, it really could go either way! A show at 80% is pure bubble level and I would even dare to say high-end bubble. Basically, it all comes down to what it does this Spring in relative terms. I've written about it much more extensively here, http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/12/rating-analysis-state-of-fox-and-nbc.html, have a look and let me know if you have any question about it ;) Fingers crossed for its renewal!

  41. Hey there! Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words, I am glad you enjoyed the article! It seems to me that you are having a great season in terms of the odds of your favorites being renewed (Scandal and TBBT are certainly perfectly fine!). As for the ones that you like and that are in trouble, I would think that The Carrie Diaries is a long shot at this moment. I still wouldn't place it in Tier 5, at least not before I see some ratings from Hart of Dixie and Whose Line once they are moved to Friday but I say it's not looking good (You can read more about it here, if you are interested: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/rating-analysis-state-of-cw-dramas.html . As for Trophy Wife, that's another one I am unfortunately not very hopeful. Unless ABC saves it by moving it to Wednesdays or something which doesn't appear to be in their plans, I am not sure how can they justify bringing back a newbie show pulling such low ratings, even if it's produced by them (more on that one here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/12/state-of-abc-and-fox-comedies.html). As for The Crazy Ones (which together with B99 are my favorite new comedies of the year, such a great taste ahah), it could go either way, it will come to its spring ratings in relative terms to the other CBS comedies and to whether or not CBS keeps 4 comedy hours intact (more here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/12/state-of-nbc-and-cbs-comedies.html).

  42. Hey there! Thanks for sopping by ;) As for the shows you've mentioned, you can read more about my predictions for each one of them on the following articles:
    - Bones: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/12/rating-analysis-state-of-fox-and-nbc.html . I do think you are a bit misinformed though because I never heard this was going to be the last and David saying for sure he wouldn't renew, just some rumours of it, as far as I know. I think that if costs don't explode, FOX will have all the incentive to bring them back considering the incredible numbers they are pulling on Fridays!
    - Supernatural: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/rating-analysis-state-of-cw-dramas.html
    - New Girl: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/12/state-of-abc-and-fox-comedies.html. I think this season is great and I don't feel they've lost charm as people are saying. Sometimes it's hit or miss for me but that's basically every comedy, so it's normal.
    - The Vampire Diaries: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/rating-analysis-state-of-cw-dramas.html. As you've said, for this season it's certain, next year we have to see what's up with those contracts. I can't imagine the show not going with Nina, Ian and Paul but I also cannot see the CW giving up on the show as it's such a monster for them. Dunno what will happen there!
    - TTP: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/rating-analysis-state-of-cw-dramas.html. To be honest, a lot has happened since I wrote this one and in the case of TTP, I think I would have to move it to Tier 4 right now. As much as I love the show, loosing half of Arrow's audience and finishing with a 0.5 on midseason finale night was just bad, and a move to Monday will only make things worse. I am all for being hopeful but I just don't see how they turn it around, unfortunately.

  43. Thanks for that info! I think that makes the renewal even more certain then because it's likely that costs have already been negotiated ;)

  45. Hey there! Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words, I am glad you enjoyed reading it! As for the shows you've mentioned, I think for some reason people underestimated the drop the show had in May last year. This level is actually not far off from where it ended last season and most shows come back to a level closer to the one they were at the end of the season. On top of that, it was moved to a lower viewed hour so a drop was to be expected. It's still doing perfectly fine though and is a virtual lock for renewal. I wrote about it here (http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/rating-analysis-state-of-cbs-dramas.html), check it out if you are interested! Regarding Almost Human, it really could go either way! Fox is hard to tell because they have so few stuff on, especially this early in fall, so there is not much to compare it to. More on Almost Human here (http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/12/rating-analysis-state-of-fox-and-nbc.html) if you are interested!

  46. Hey there. Thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, you have several misconceptions about the way the system works:
    - you say that Beauty and the Beast grows 100% once you add DVR numbers. While that may be true in some weeks, that still leaves the show with a mere 0.6. If you compare that 0.6 with the numbers the other CW shows pull once you add in DVR, you will see that Beauty and the Beast is still the lowest rated show, tied with The Carrie Diaries only if that much.
    - even if what I said before wasn't true, the only viewing that brings money to advertisers is the one with commercials - otherwise how would imagine that networks get the funds to pay for the costs of the show? If everyone were to watch Beauty and the Beast sans commercials in DVR, networks would make no money out of it, so it would still be cancelled. I explain how this works in greater detail here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/10/renewals-and-cancellations-decisions.html
    - as for the Canada thing, the amount of adults 18-49 that don't watch the show live on Monday because they watch it illegally from Sunday to Monday is ridiculously low and would never make a meaningful difference for Beauty and the Beast. A 0.1 rating point is equal to
1,269,600 adults 18-49. The most downloaded shows on the torrents websites usually have around ~10,000 downloads from what I see. This means the downloads would have to be around ~125x times higher than this for that to even make a 0.1 difference!! On top of that, keep in mind that out of these download numbers, there are 1) A lot of them from people that are not aged 18-49; B)A lot from people outside of the US (most of them), C)A lot from people that would not watch the show live anyway; D)A lot from people who don't have Nielsen boxes. Bottom line? It's virtually impossible that it's making a significant difference. What's more... even if the show were to score 0.4s, it would still be cancelled. Blaming its fate on the Canada airing does not make sense!

  47. Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words, glad you liked it ;) As for Scandal, major YES! I have been a fan since the very beginning and I was suffering in early season 2 when we didn't even know if the show was going to get a backorder. I never thought it could explode as much as it did even though I thought it was one of the best things airing on TV by then already. So happy with the turnaround! And I agree that it's probably the only thing Paul Lee has done right.

  48. Hey! Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words! As for the Blacklist, I think you should definitely give it another try, it could be that you weren't in the mood the day you watched it, no? There is a chance it's simply not your cup of tea (I never could like Breaking Bad no matter how much the entire world loves it for instance) but maybe another try doesn't hurt ;)

  49. Hey @Nardia McPhee, thanks for stopping by! I agree, the H50's move to Fridays has been one of the bright spots of CBS's fall and one of the moves that's actually working (even if that's counterbalanced by the total flop that Hostages has been). I never thought the show would do this well there! I think it was genuinely being hurt by the crossover with Revolution last year as well the competition from another procedural in Castle and the incompatible and not that high rated lead-in from Mike and Molly. I was doubtful it could work so well but I am very glad it did. Also, this season has had top notch episodes, I think it's a vast improvement over season 3 (and I didn't have a major problem with season 3 anyway, I just think this one is better)

  54. Hey there! Thank you for stopping by and for the kind words, I am glad you enjoyed the article. In addition to all the useful links that @DarkUFO has already provided below, I can also direct you the the articles in which I've covered the shows you've mentioned!
    - check it out here to see my predictions for Supernatural, which is all but certain to be renewed: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/rating-analysis-state-of-cw-dramas.html
    - check it out here to see my thoughts on Castle's chances, also a certain renewal: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/rating-analysis-state-of-abc-dramas.html
    - check it out here to see where OUAT stands in terms of renewal chances, http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/rating-analysis-state-of-abc-dramas.html. Don't let the ratings fool you on this one. Not only it's still pretty much in line with ABC's average (hence a certain renewal regardless of the rest), but the show is also a season away from syndication, which means it's one of the safest bets for renewal from ABC!

Regarding The Walking Dead, I don't cover cable shows but The Walking Dead (which by the way, is my favorite show on the air) is the highest rated non-sports shows of the season, by a huge margin and that is coming from a usually lower viewed cable channel! It's an absolute monster and has even pulled ratings on the 8.x range, which is incredible! I am afraid I am ignorant when it comes to the ratings of Doctor Who though, I am sorry!

  55. I didn't like the Blacklist pilot, but kept watching it anyways because its the pilot - the show can change a lot. Now, The Blacklist is one of my favorite series and one of the few I make sure to watch live. I hope you give it another shot.

  56. Hey there! Thank you for stopping by! As for Almost Human, I also like the show very much and I am hoping that FOX keeps it. I like what the show is right now but I think there is huge potential for it to be even much better than it is. At this moment though, it really could go either way for them. I've written about it in greater detail here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/12/rating-analysis-state-of-fox-and-nbc.html, check it out if you are interested ;)

  57. Funny how we can have such different opinions! I really like the show but excluding the first part of the mid-season finale, the pilot is still my favorite. I thought it was mind blowing, it got me hooked right away! To each his own ;)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hmmm...to me The Blacklist seemed like it would be another The Mentalist or Castle. The only twist being that the main character is suppose to be a bad person (that we like anyway). I didn´t think the acting was bad in the pilot, it was the plot that didn´t catch my attention. I´ll give it another try.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I don't find similarities with Castle or The Mentalist (The Mentalist I have only watched some Season 1 episodes though). I think the closest comparison I have is Person of Interest. The characters are extremely complex and well developed by amazing actors and while the episodes have usual cases of the week (which by the way are usually way more fascinating than the typical crime of the week thing anyway), there are over-going plotlines and relationships that end up being the main reason for you to come back. In some episodes, those over-going plotlines even take front presence instead of the cases of the week.

  65. Awesome, that's great to see! He seems pretty convincing! I must say.. I am enjoying Bones this year more than I have had for the past two seasons, so I am very happy that things are looking bright for the gang!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm enjoying it, too, especially now that Pelant is dead (I really hope!), but I also enjoyed 7 and 8 as well.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Thanks for the detailed look at the ways the shows stack up. It struck me that Person of Interest is among the shows that had an Awful drop in ratings and yet it is still the fourth highest rated CBS show and well enough above the average for CBS dramas that it is in no danger of being canceled. I also know that POI will get enough episodes next season for syndication, which would make renewal for next season a good bet even if the numbers were not above average for CBS dramas. I realize that the show started dropping last spring and the move to 10:00 put it in a much less viewed time period, which means the drop is less than it looks and is affected by the move. I do wonder if CBS is feeling a little bit concerned about their network dramas. Hostages was a ratings disaster. Elementary, Criminal Minds, and Hawaii 50 are in the ugly drop range and The Good Wife and Mentalist have been bubble shows for the last few seasons. It's hard to tell because CBS is so skewed by the NCIS, NCIS:LA huge numbers, but is CBS possibly looking at having to rethink and rework how they choose dramas? Intelligence could hit big, but Reckless being unscheduled doesn't make it sound like CBS has a lot of confidence in it.

I guess I'm wondering if after so many years of dominating in ratings is CBS maybe coming down to earth?

On a completely different note, a few years ago I thought that if the CW could just keep its ratings level and improve a few nights that they might become competitive simply because network TV is simply losing viewers to all sorts of other outlets. The CW is one network that was forced to look at new ways to monetize its shows and really jumped ahead of other networks with Netflix, Hulu and streaming. Since I think the CW has produced some really good and somewhat innovative shows, the idea that they may become more respectable in the ratings makes me happy. Certainly changing their basic concept from TV for young girls to fantasy/sci fi has helped the ratings while creating some quality television.

  68. Hey! Thanks for the info. And yeah someone told me they would return if Bones was returned for season 10. What i meant was that i wanted the show to wrap up now. Not that it actually will wrap up this yr. lol Even though i've been watching since the pilot and love the show, personally i feel that it has reached its peak. I love New Girl, they have funny episodes and not so funny episodes, but i love the whole cast and the chemistry. I really think it will go 5 seasons. With TVD, they really do need to start discussing contracts. I for one will be crying when the series ends. Sigh, TTP...it might be stupid at this point. But who knows, maybe Monday might work for it. I mean it's a slim chance, but there's still a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  69. No problem ;)

I actually think Bones is better this year than it has been over the past two seasons. Or maybe it's just me who connected with the show again. I feel they are having really strong episodes this year, so I think they can still do at least one more season! As for New Girl, I think there is potential to do more than 5 seasons, we'll see. Regarding The Tomorrow People, of course there is a chance, I am not loosing out hope entirely either, but it's a very small chance, that's what sucks. Let's keep hoping and let's enjoy the season that we did get!

  70. Thanks for the data! I've always been interested in TV stats! Really excited to see if Chicago Fire pulls through! :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hey there. Thanks a lot for reading and for such an extended comment. Regarding your points about CBS, I think the best way to look at it is to analyze the overall CBS ratings average' evolution over the last years. These have been their average for dramas over the last seasons:
    - 2009/2010: 3.00
    - 2010/2011: 2.70
    - 2011/2012: 2.60
    - 2012/2013: 2.20
    - 2013/2014 (Fall Only): 1.90

However, this is not the proper way to look at the numbers, because every year barodcasters decline in their ratings by more than 10% on average. This means that we cannot compare the 1.90 today with the 3.00 from 5 years ago. Is there a way to compare the numbers then? Yes, there is. We should divide the numbers by the average of the entire scripted broadcast fare from that year and then multiply again by the average from this year to get "comparable" numbers. (Disclaimer: this idea is not originally mine. http://www.spottedratings.com/p/a18-49-index.html This website has put together this wonderful way of comparing stuff. My version is a tiny bit different because I don't use unscripted etc, but the end result is the same. Here's how the numbers would look if they were today:
    - 2009/2010: 2.10
    - 2010/2011: 2.10
    - 2011/2012: 2.10
    - 2012/2013: 2.10
    - 2013/2014 (Fall Only): 1.90

This shows that, indeed, CBS is having a horrible year as far as their dramas are concerned! It's also extremely shocking to me how stable they've been performing - over the past 4 seasons, there have been virtually no changes in the performance of their dramas. Certainly you can argue that the NCIS twins skew the results upwards, but that's true not only for this year but also for the past years, so I don't think it's an issue when comparing the numbers. However, when looking at this 1.90 when compared to the 2.10, there are two caveats to consider: 1)Hostages is a colossal failure like CBS has had very little and that's bringing down the whole thing considerably. 2)CBS shows tend to hold up better in winter/spring than most of the other shows from the other broadcasters, which means that these numbers (which are all relative, may very well improve by season's end).

Regarding the CW, I definitely agree with you - it also gives me great pleasure to watch it improve its position. Hopefully they have a winter and a spring as good or better as their fall!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hey there! Thank you for reading and stopping by! I am glad you enjoyed reading it and that you found it interesting! And yes, you can be proud of your show ;) Let's see what Spring brings it!

  73. I enjoyed the previous seasons but I am enjoying this one more for some reason! Maybe I am just "clicking" with the show more again, sometimes it happens to me!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I agree about Bones. I feel it's on top of its game this season, so I really hope it gets a final season. :) But then again, every season after the "forgotten season" has gotten better, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  75. What is the "forgotten season"?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yeah, that happens with me, too, sometimes, so I completely understand. :) I think a big reason why I'm enjoying this season so much is because Pelant is dead. lol

    ReplyDelete
  77. Ah! That's a very strange one for me. I didn't like the first half except for the Doctor episode which is one of my favorites from the series. But the second half had some of my favorite, like the Vincent's death episode, the one in which they are stuck in the elevator, the finale!

    ReplyDelete
  78. It's better, but for me it has gotten very predictable, and I don't like that at all. The fizz is just out for me, and i have yet to reconnect. I Think the only thing iI cared about was Brennan connecting with the professor in the mid season finale, and Cam finally confronting her bitch of a friend. And iI enjoyed the bar scene for the bachelorette party. Other than that iI still don't care. And iI agree with Sarah, season 6 couldn't have been more forgotten. (and idt i'll ever get over the knife we were stabbed in the back with with the off screen hookup). I just need it to sizzle, get my blood pumping again. But i'm still gonna watch. I can't flush 9 years down the toilet, i still love the characters. And TTP you're right, let's enjoy the season, i mean it was picked up for a full. let's continue with it. : )

    ReplyDelete
  79. Forgotten indeed, smmfh. Sooo disappointed in that one.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Wow, hope the batb writers see this, 56% drop in viewers can be somewhat attributed to moving to a new day but some of that has to be representative of what is going on with the story don't you think?

    ReplyDelete
  81. It's a procedural, so at the end of the day, and especially at the end of 9 years, it's bound to be predictable I think. For me, it's worth fr the character moments and for episodes like the wedding one and others like the jury one or the professor one. The crimes from most of the episodes are just ok IMO. I still find the Brennan character one of the most fascinating TV characters, even after 9 years. But I understand where you're coming from.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Thanks for the long term view on CBS. Although I diligently follow ratings during the year, it's on a look at them each week, check what they got the week before, then promptly forget until the next ratings come out where I do lather, rinse, repeat. So having you keep track of how things progress throughout not only the year, but also make comparisons from year to year and report on trends is something I really appreciate. I do realize the Hostages is something CBS is wishing they had not tried, although whatever they put Monday at 10:00 would have had to compete with Blacklist which hit really big, especially for a 10:00 show and Castle, which manages to get good ratings even though it is an older show. That would have been hard to overcome, but Hostages was obviously not the show to even come close to working.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I've only seen a handful of episodes (not counting the last 3, which I watched live) and none them had "her" in it. I did however see a scene with "her" and Booth in bed (either flipping through the channels or from a fan video, I can't remember) and almost got sick. No joke. My stomach literally turned.

    ReplyDelete
  84. No problem! I agree with you, the 10pm Monday slot is a huge problem for CBS, especially now that the 9h30 lead-in is not only incompatible, as it is weak. My opinion is that CBS should move LA there. I think the show is inflated with the NCIS lead-in yes, but worst case scenario, even if it falls something like 30% (and I think it can fall less than that), it would be at 1.7, which is better than what a new show can probably do there. Intelligence could then remain on Tuesday at 9.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hey there. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment;) Regarding your question, I am not aware if the overall consensus is that this season isn't good; if it is, then I agree that it probably doesn't help. However, it's unlikely that's what causes the drop considering the show has bee rock steady the entire season. It has always posted 0.3s. Had the show done something like 0.6, 0.5, 0.5, 0.4, 0.4, 0.3, 0.3, 0.3, 0.3 - then you could argue that people were rejecting this new season because of its quality. As it stands, it appears that the show never had a loyal following to begin with that was willing to follow it from its post TVD slot, I am afraid.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I agree that the level of quality for H50 has been raised a few notches this season! The writing has improved with the addition of a few new writers. This is certainly a procedural that solves it's case every week with enough time left over for furthering relationships and characterizations. I've watched this show from the beginning and feel Season 4 is the best season to date. 4.10, the Pearl Harbor/ Japanese Internment episode was arguably the best Network episode of the season in terms of storytelling. I also feel the return of Grace Park to full time in January will benefit the show immensely. Many viewers felt in limbo wondering where Grace was and IF she would ever come back to Hawaii. It has been confirmed by the Showrunner now that she will, indeed, return to the Five-0 team in January. It will be interesting to see how this impacts the ratings for the second half of the season.

Thanks for a very interesting set of statistics and your interpretation!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Yeah true. But if I can figure out the killer in the first 5 min with every single episode, they've had so far, in this season. That's where I get bored. I want them to put the mystery back in it, ya know? Maybe spice things up a little.Cam gets engaged to Arastoo. (i love him). Maybe someone important dies. (again). Maybe one of the interns quit...just something!! And btw, i don't get grossed out by anything on this show, never have. But Hodgings and his bug birth in his neck, was extremely gross, everytime he was on screen, i turned my head and just listened to what he had to say. lol
