A weekly feature in which we're trying to find most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently.
Not a lot of things to watch this week, but still, here are our highlights of the past seven days. And also, since the year is almost over, I hope you all had great holidays and I wish you all a very Happy New Year!
ATLANTIS, "Touched by the Gods: Part Two", December 28, 2013, Actors: Sarah Parish and more
The Scene: Jason's mother is revealed
Justyna Kubica: I have to say, I didn't expect this twist to happen, so this was quite a crazy surprise for me. Actually, when I started thinking about it yesterday, it was quite an obvious choice, but my first guess was that the Oracle, one of my favorites on the show, could be Jason's mother, and I never really wondered beyond that. And Pasiphae, the main antagonist of the series (so far), being our hero's mother, can be just the thing the show needs in its second season after a steady, good start this year. Another reason why I enjoyed this moment is Sarah Parish's performance. She's absolutely fantastic, especially here and when she shares a scene with Juliet Stevenson's The Oracle. Both very talented actresses and I can't wait to see more of their characters when the show returns after hiatus.
DOCTOR WHO, "The Time of the Doctor", December 25, 2013, Actors: Matt Smith and more
The Scenes: The Doctor sees Amelia & The regeneration & Handles dies
Justyna Kubica: There were a few scenes I could pick from the episode. Personally I thought it was a good one, maybe not great, things got very chaotic at one point, but still, it had its moments and I enjoyed it as a whole. But my pick was the scene where Amy appears in the Doctor's vision/hallucination/dream. To see her back, even for a short scene like this one, meant a lot. I loved the reference to the one of my favorites quotes on the show: "You were the first. The first face this face saw. And you were seared onto my hearts." It's just such a beautiful line, with a deep meaning and I like the way it's true for not just Amy, but still remains very special for her. I have to say, I had no idea, I missed her and Rory so much until I saw her back in the Tardis, with Matt's Doctor. Great, lovely moment! I already miss Eleven. But all the best wishes for Twelve and his amazing companion, Clara!
Also picked by Sharon Seymour
Diana Mack: The last scene with the regeneration of the Doctor in Twelve. The Tardis starts shaking, and as Clara looks confused at the new Doctor, he asks how to fly the Tardis!
Sandi wich: Eleven seeing Amy just before the reset of the regeneration cycle. It was a beautiful moment, and I loved the lines they spoke "I will not forget one line of this, not one day, I swear. I will always remember when the Doctor was me." "Raggedy Man, goodnight". Honorable Mention: Handles dying after reminding the Doctor to patch the telephone through to the console.
Bradley Adams: By far the highlight of an incredibly pathetic episode. Handles stood out, and I was disappointed when he died. They should have made him a regular for season 8.
NIKITA, "Canceled", December 27, 2013, Actors: Maggie Q, Melinda Clarke, Shane West and more
The Scenes: The closing montage & The final showdown between Nikita and Amanda
Justyna Kubica: Like I already commented once on the site, I believe in happy endings. I feel like every show deserves one. After everything the characters (and viewers) have been through, they deserve it. So of course, no matter how much I enjoyed many other scenes in the episode f.e. the final showdown with Amanda, my favorite scene is the closing montage where everyone gets their good, even happy, ending. It made me feel really satisfied after the last hour of this great show and I wouldn't have it any other way. First of all, it's nice to see there's a reference somewhere that everyone is still in touch, they haven't just disappeared from each other's lives. Alex gets to do what she loves and still helps people with Sam (but really Owen) by her side. I miss Sean, but I'm glad those two are in a good place together. Birkhoff got the girl, she's waiting for him in London, and he shares his greatest work with the people, still remaining true to himself. And Michael and Nikita are finally free from their past pain, got married and find something important to do, somewhere between peace and quiet, they choose to help those in need, helping out, saving the day, which is who they really are after all. Thank you Nikita cast & crew for this amazing series and a beautiful ending! You'll be dearly missed!
Jamie Coudeville: The closing montage with everyone's happy endings - This gave me so much feelings. They're finally all happy. I like the way they ended it. Alex being recognized for her human rights work and Owen/Sam as her bodyguard, Birhoff being Birkhoff and releasing Shadownet to the masses and Michael & Nikita married and unable to just sit on a beach. I shed some tears.
Daniel van der Veer: Honestly, I did not see that twist coming. When Nikita killed all the members of The Group, I didn't think these deaths were faked. Imagine my surprise when Nikita revealed to Amanda that she outsmarted her. Nikita and Amanda's conversation was a really deep one and really went to the heart of their relationship. I was also very surprised to see Amanda still alive, but think that this was ultimately her best ending. Also picked by Sharon Seymour and Bradley Adams
SHERLOCK, "Many Happy Returns", December 24, 2013, Actors: Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch
The Scene: John watches the DVD made by Sherlock
Sandi wich: John sitting down to watch the uncut version of the birthday DVD Sherlock made. It was bit like Doctor Who's 'Blink' towards the end where it seemed like Holmes was answering John's "Don't be dead" line with "OK".
