"We are very proud of Ripper Street which has enjoyed two highly ambitious series on BBC One," the spokesperson explained.
"However, the second series didn't bring the audience we hoped and in order to make room for creative renewal and new ideas it won't be returning."
Jerome Flynn - who plays Bennet Drake in the period thriller - first revealed that the show had been dropped during an interview on radio station BBC London 94.9.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Damn it! I was ok with Copper getting cancelled because i didn't enjoy it's second season that much, but Ripper Street was awesome.. I was really hoping for another season.
ReplyDeleteIt's a real shame isn't it, moving it from the Sunday night slot hasn't helped it imo.
ReplyDeleteHOW COULD THEY DO SO TERRIBLE MISTAKE????????
ReplyDeleteJust seen this doing the rounds on Twitter, there's a lot of angry fans it seems :(
ReplyDeleteYou can contact Feedback on Radio 4 to complain about axing of#RipperStreet by email: feedback@bbc.co.uk or phone: 03 333 444 544
well this blows. I really like Ripper Street :(
ReplyDeleteOMG NO. Were the ratings so bad? Damn it.
ReplyDeleteWHAT? NO!
ReplyDeleteThe rating were down because it was moved to a Monday. The ratings haven't significantly fallen since the move, only from when it was in the prime time Sunday spot.
ReplyDeleteGutted!
ReplyDeleteThe ratings are only down since the move to a Monday, they were steady enough in that slot but understandably down from the prime time Sunday slot. imo they were trying to kill the show because it was too expensive to buy in from Tiger Aspect who make the show.
ReplyDeleteEpisodes 4 and 5 got 3 million viewers.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's what I said :s They moved it from prime time on a Sunday to the death slot on Monday.
ReplyDeleteI live in the uk but now this and whitechapel are gone atlantis is the only british series i watch except for anything with david tennant in.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Ripper Street. :(
ReplyDeleteHave you given Sherlock a go?
ReplyDeleteI agree that there are too many shows being cancelled/ending at the moment. I'd add Misfits to that list too :(

ReplyDeleteDo you think the discussion can be reversed? .
ReplyDeleteAlready signed it.
ReplyDeleteI doubt it, unfortunately. But as the national public broadcaster I think that it's important they know that the public aren't happy about the decision. Esp as they put s2 out against I'm a Celebrity, on a different day to s1, and then cancel it because the overnight ratings aren't good enough. The consolidated viewing figures were about the same, or more than, other BBC dramas.
ReplyDeleteSandi for the response. We have to keep hope. There are multiple petitions, We need to show big numbers. Here is one by David Saunders with more than 10,000 so far. http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/reverse-the-bbc-s-decision-to-cancel-ripper-street . Keep signing or email:
