Metered Market Thursday Ratings
Unprecedented Victory for NBC
Thursday 12/05/13
Metered Market Results
Household
Rating/Share
NBC 10.9/18
CBS 6.2/10
ABC 4.6/ 7
Fox 2.9/ 5
CW 1.5/ 2
———-
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Thursday 12/06/12:
NBC: +319, CW: – 6, ABC: -12, CBS: -28, Fox: -37
———-
-Winners:
“The Sound of Music Live!” (NBC), “The Big Bang Theory” (CBS), “Scandal” (ABC)
-Honorable Mention:
“Two and a Half Men” (CBS)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (ABC), “The X Factor” (Fox), “Glee” (Fox)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
Given the low benchmark for comparison, there was every reason to believe the live production of “The Sound of Music” would ignite NBC. But a 10.9 rating/18 share in the household overnights from 8-11 p.m. is more than anyone could have expected. And it proves both the value, and importance, of event type programming on network television. It is still very relevant.
“The Sound of Music Live!” opened with a 10.9/18 in the 8 p.m. half-hour, which was eight percent above the 10.1/16 for normally undefeated “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS (10.1/16). And it ended with a still stellar 10.5/17 at 10:30 p.m., with a first-place finish in each of the six half-hours as follows:
8:00 p.m.: 10.9/18
8:30 p.m.: 11.5/18
9:00 p.m.: 11.3/18
9:30 p.m.: 11.2/18
10:00 p.m.: 10.5/17
10:30 p.m.: 10.0/17
Comparably, “The Sound of Music Live!” bested the year-ago combination of “30 Rock,” “Up All Night,” “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Rock Center With Brian Williams” by a mammoth 319 percent, with similar overnight gains over the current season line-up. The bottom line: This is a massive win for both NBC and the entire television landscape, and proof that network television can still steam up the water-cooler. Congratulations, NBC!
Elsewhere, each of the four competing networks posted losses from the year-ago evening with Fox the bigger loser at erosion of 37 percent in the overnights, overall, with its pairing of “The X Factor” (#3: 3.5/ 6) and “Glee” (#4: 2.4/ 4).
On CBS, freshman sitcom “The Millers” dipped by 42 percent out of “The Big Bang Theory,” with a 5.9/ 9 (#2) at 8:30 p.m. Next was “The Crazy Ones” (#3: 4.9/ 8 at 9 p.m.), followed by “Two and a Half Men” at a second-place 5.6/ 9 at 9:30 p.m., which built by 14 percent. “Elementary” was third at 10 p.m. with a respectable 5.4/ 9. Note to Paula Marshall, who guest-starred on “Two and a Half Men” last night: great to see you back where you belong!
Over at ABC, soon-to-conclude “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” was off the map with a mere 2.2/ 4 (#4) at 8 p.m., followed by veteran “Grey’s Anatomy” at a second-place 5.2/ 8 from 9-10 p.m. Despite facing “The Sound of Music Live!,” “Scandal” rose to a solid second-place 6.2/11 from 10-11 p.m. (which was 13 percent above one year earlier). It will be interesting to see what the variation will be demographically opposite “The Sound of Music Live” for all shows last night.
The CW capped off the night with a below average 1.6/ 3 for “The Vampire Diaries” at 8 p.m. (#5) into a typical 1.3/ 2 for “Reign” at 9 p.m.

Does anyone know Scandal's overnight numbers from last week to compare it to this week?
ReplyDelete-Sigh- Wonderland :(
ReplyDeleteGo TVD!!!
ReplyDeleteYou can find it in the Ratings News or Ratings Database.
ReplyDeleteSounds like 'The Sound of Music Live!' did better than expected! Maybe NBC will do this for more often, shows like ''The Book of Mormon'' from Matt Stone and Trey Parker for example.
ReplyDeleteJust enjoy it while it lasts, that's what I do, and I'm gonna keep watching till it ends.
ReplyDeleteCBS has to feel okay about Elementary given the competition and the rest of the soft showings. If Marc calls it respectable, I won't worry. I think this is the first time he hasn't called it disappointing, lol. When he references it at all.
ReplyDeleteNo one expected Sound of Music to do so well. Wonder how it affected the other shows demographically.
ReplyDeleteno, sadly, doesn't seem so. It did a 6.8 in the HH on their last new episode and now they only scored a 6.2.
ReplyDeleteI hope the fall out in the demo isn't massive, tbh.
Last Scandal deserves HUGE ratings.
ReplyDeleteTSOM is a classic that everyone know. TBOM would not resonate with masses. I've heard of it, but I have no clue what it's about. I think TSOM was an anomaly - combo of first live broadcast of this kind in 50 years, the star power of Carrie Underwood (she didn't replace Faith Hill for SNF theme for nothing), the live tweeting/snarking and a very popular production that in part of the "American" experience.
ReplyDeleteWow, 4.6 for sound of music.. tremendous!
ReplyDeleteWow, 4.6 and 18.5 million viewers for SOML. I would have never guessed that.
ReplyDeleteAll that and everybody loves to hate Nazis :P
ReplyDeletejust outstanding for TSOM. wow.

CBS really should move TAHM to 9/8 to serve as a tentpole for the line-up. The two new shows lose all the steam from TBBT.
ReplyDeleteGooooo Elementary!!!
ReplyDeleteI guess SOML took viewers away from other shows, TVD had a sharp drop from last week.
ReplyDeleteIf TCO was behind TBBT it would retain more audience than The Millers most probably
ReplyDeleterandom observations:
ReplyDelete-let's just talk about the fact that three different dramas on ABC, FOX, and the CW were all within a tenth of one another. and all in the low 1s.
-and the fact that NBC, home of Must-Avoid Comedy, won the night. Thursday night, at that. I don't think this suggests they should kill comedy on the night entirely, but it does suggest that experimenting with different options wouldn't be a bad idea.
-every comedy on CBS that isn't HIMYM, BBT or 2BG seems to be converging into some sort of low-mid 2 range. it'll be interesting to see what shifts get made come midseason. I'm guessing both blocks stay as is. maybe TCO/The Millers will get flipped; maybe Mom steps into the post-BBT slot at least once.
-Reign's pretty darned consistent, just like TTP! unfortunate that one of them will probably have to go. although I wonder why they can't just timeshare if that's the case...neither's a total bust at this point.
-Grey's got hit a little but yay for Scandal!
The Big Bang Theory down seven-tenths, lowest ratings since April.
ReplyDeleteGrey's Anatomy down two-tenths, news series low.
hoping TCO will get switched with The Millers as CBS seem to like the former more, but probably not as they don't usually take big risks at midseason.
ReplyDeleteIt depends on how the mid season turns out.
ReplyDeleteSo according to fast nationals Arrow is number one show on CW this week. Supernatural is at number 2. And VD and Originals are tied for number 3 ATM. We will see how it looks like in the finals.
ReplyDeleteThe Millers is a CBS production, not likely to happen. Its more likely they push Two and a half men at 9 since it seems to rise out of TCO.
ReplyDeleteI'm so relieved re: Elementary. So, so relieved. I thought it'd be crushed. SoM and Scandal?
ReplyDeleteWell, to be fair, TVD had the toughest competition out of all four this week, just like Arrow had the toughest competition when it got that 0.8 for episode 2.04. I hope TVD is adjusted up in the finals.
ReplyDeleteAwesome for Scandal ! I need to watch last night episode
ReplyDeleteRatings for Wonderland this week are a bit higher than the 2 weeks before that. Let's hope they have lots of viewers next week for this year's finale. I really like the show. I can't wait to see a lot mroe of Cyrus!
ReplyDeleteNote: Last nights Thursday
ReplyDeleteNight football game was simulcast on the ABC affiliate in Houston. As a
result ABC ratings may be inflated and subject to more than typical
adjustments.
That might be true but VD till now has been very untouchable in the demo ratings. Other shows very rarely came close to their ratings. To see a show on the cw have better rating than VD is surprising. And Arrow has also had hard competition not only airing against baseball but also the CMA Awards that scored a 4.7 rating. In that week Arrow scored a 1.0 the same as VD yesterday.
ReplyDeleteit usually does adjust up and yes this week it did have some actual competition in The Sound Of Music but usually Thursday 8pm ABC, NBC and FOX are non entities. So a 1.0(pending finals) this week with competition is very good.
ReplyDeleteArrow has more male than female viewers. It's more affected by a big game than by the CMA awards. To TVD, TSOM is as big competition as a big game is to Arrow.
ReplyDeleteI dont care which show wins the week for the CW but I have to say its fantastic to see that there are now 4 shows competing for that title weekly, who would have thought we would be seeing the CW with 4 well rated shows all with a chance of winning the week?
ReplyDeleteBTW TVD has adjusted up more than one tenth on at least 1 occasion so we will see if it was actually affected at all, it has a pretty dedicated fanbase.
Looks like The Sound Of Music stole a few tenths from here and there
ReplyDeleteThe Originals has more viewers than VD? That's awsome!
ReplyDeleteIf VD adjusts up it might even tie Glee which would be awesome for the CW but really bad for FOX. I know they aren't direct competition but who would have ever said those 2 shows would ever tie in demo rating.
ReplyDeleteEven if it doesn't, it's already embarrassing enough that FOX renewed it for 2 seasons.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they'll shorten next season? And I think Glee should definitely go to Fridays next season, but FOX have bigger problems *cough* XFactor *cough*
ReplyDeleteExactly.
ReplyDeleteTrue and that's why i think they put Arrow on Wednesday not too much sport interference and Arrow rules the "all-mighty" male 18-34 demo ( 1.4 ; being even the number one show in that demo in their time slot). It probably will be a one time thing but its nice seeing that CW isn't only VD anymore. And its nice seeing a male skewing show on CW actually be the weeks best performer.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It's great for the CW that they have four shows they can count on, and next year they might even have 6 with The Flash and SPN's spin-off.
ReplyDeleteNo adjustments for VD or Reign in finals. GA, Scandal, Once Upon A Time and The Millers were adjusted down 0.1. X Factor ajusted up 0.1, TBBT adjusted up 0.2.
ReplyDelete
