Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS topped the Tuesday overnights despite airing all repeats with a 19 percent advantage over second-place NBC. But the home of “The Voice,” of course, will reign supreme among the key demographics. In the distant No. 3 spot was ABC, which was negatively impacted by a repeat of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” followed by Fox and improved The CW.

The encore of “NCIS” on CBS led the night, with an 8.3 rating/14 share in the overnights at 8 p.m. And it led into a second-place 6.5/11 for the repeat of spin-off “NCIS: Los Angeles” at 9 p.m., followed by the repeat of “Person of Interest” at a dominant 5.4/ 9 at 10 p.m.

Reliable “The Biggest Loser” on NBC finished second from 8-9 p.m. with a 4.6/ 8, which was five percent above the 4.4/ 7 one week earlier. Next was “The Voice” at a healthy 7.6/12 (#1) from 9-10 p.m., which built from the 8:30 p.m. portion of “The Biggest Loser” (4.7/ 8) by 62 percent. And “Chicago Fire” capped off the night with a second-place 5.4/ 9, which was its best overnight performance since Oct. 1.

In season-premiere news, “What Would You Do?” on ABC moved into its new Tuesday 10 p.m. time period with a distant third-place 2.5/ 4, which was 26 percent below year-ago occupant “Private Practice” (3.4/ 6 on 12/04/12). Earlier in the evening on ABC was the aforementioned repeat of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” at a third-place 2.5/ 4 at 8 p.m., followed by original installments of sitcoms “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.4/ 5) and “Trophy Wife” (#3: 2.6/ 4) from 9-10 p.m. While a 3.4/ 5 is nothing to boast about, “The Goldbergs” did build by 55 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of the “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” repeat (2.2/ 4).

Elsewhere, Fox had nothing positive to say about its sitcom line-up of “Dads” (#4: 2.4/ 4), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#3: 2.5/ 4), a repeat of “New Girl” (#4: 1.4/ 2) and “The Mindy Project” (#4: 1.9/ 4). And The CW built year-to-year by an average of 33 percent with its pairing of “The Originals” (#5: 1.7/ 3) and veteran “Supernatural” (#5: 1.5/ 2). Consider “The Originals” a lock for a second season renewal.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.
