“The Big Bang Theory” Lifts CBS to Victory

CBS 6.9/12
ABC 5.0/ 8
NBC 2.7/ 4

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Thursday 12/13/12:
NBC: + 4, ABC: – 2, CW: – 6, CBS: -22, Fox: -41
———-
-Winners:
“The Big Bang Theory” (CBS), “Scandal” (ABC)
-Honorable Mention:
“Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (ABC), “The X Factor” (Fox), “Sean Saves the World” (NBC), “The Michael J. Fox Show” (NBC), “Parenthood” (NBC)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by an 11.4 rating/19 share for mega-hit “The Big Bang Theory,” CBS topped this second Thursday in December in the overnights with a 38 percent advantage over second-place ABC. But ABC actually finished first from 9-11 p.m. care of “Grey’s Anatomy” (5.8/10: – 8 percent from the year-ago evening) and “”Scandal” (6.6/12: + 18 percent). Comparably, “Scandal” built from the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Grey’s Anatomy” (6.0/10) by 10 percent.
At 8 p.m. on ABC was freshman flop “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” at a fourth-place 2.4/ 4, which was 33 percent below short-lived year-ago drama “Last Resort” (3.6/ 6 on 12/13/12).
Airing out of “The Big Bang Theory” on the Eye net was “The Millers,” which dipped by 39 percent to a 6.9/12 (#1) at 8:30 p.m., followed by second-place time period finishes for “The Crazy Ones” (5.4/ 9), “Two and a Half Men” (5.8/10) and “Elementary” (5.9/10) from 9-11 p.m. While not a bust by any means, erosion of 22 percent in the overnights year-to-year is all the more reason why CBS has some retooling to do on Thursday.
On NBC, holiday competition “The Sing-Off” scored a 3.3/ 6 from 8-9 p.m., while is better than the recent overnights for “Parks and Recreation” (and other comedies in the hour this season and last). But this was 15 percent below the 3.9/ 6 for “The Sing-Off” on Wednesday and 44 percent below the 5.9/ 9 for its season premiere (out of “The Voice”) on Monday.
Next on NBC was the failing combination of “Sean Saves the World” (#4: 2.3/ 4), “The Michael J. Fox Show” (#4: 2.0/ 3) and “Parenthood” (#3: 2.5/ 4) from 9-11 p.m., which has lost any of the minor momentum it had in the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour last season.
Elsewhere, Fox could not compete with sinking “The X Factor” (#2: 3.7/ 6: -31 percent from the year-ago evening) and an encore of “Glee” (#4: 1.7/ 3). And The CW was on par from one week earlier care of dramas “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.7/ 3) and “Reign” (#5: 1.4/ 2), which are not impacted by the network’s upcoming midseason changes.

Hurray for Scandal! Great ep and Greys had a good ep too. I wasn't particularly fond of this week'a TBBT ep but either way it's just keeps on slaying. Hopefully The Crazy Ones did okay.

Adjusted down?
ReplyDeleteyup anytime there is a preemption, ratings are adjusted down.
ReplyDeleteNot always.
ReplyDeleteGlad that Grey's rose after that 2.3 last week.
ReplyDeleteThe Crazy Ones is still at 2.1, even with both TBBT and The Millers rising half a rating point. Why???
NBC is still pathetic.
I don't know. Even with The Millers rising half a rating point, it is even with last week.
ReplyDeleteThats true, but very rarely they adjusted up. The only exception being The Voice this year. But that was due to the overruns in other markets.
ReplyDeleteWow Arrow is the number one show on CW for a second week in a row.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural also got a 1.1.
ReplyDeleteAnd TVD might be adjusted up.
SPN wasn't aired this week..
ReplyDeleteArrow had 1.2 the week SPN got 1.1. You're confusing both weeks.
ReplyDeleteOh right, I saw the ratings latest episode on STV+ and didn't see the week. Silly me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I am.
ReplyDeleteI think it happened last year once with TVD too.
ReplyDeleteGlad Reign didnt go down, GA go Up, TVD even with last week but it`s weird i thought it would do better and Big Bang showing whose the boss!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know when the game ended? I'm just worried about Elementsry. Should be a series low for 2.5 Men if that's inflated, no?
ReplyDeleteEven if TVD adjust up to tie Arrow, Arrow is still the overall winner, since its viewers are higher.
ReplyDeletetotal viewership doesn't matter at all,you know that right? hate much?
ReplyDeleteI do not think so. In my opinion, a series that marks 2 million and 1.0 demo is better than one that marks 3 million and 1.0 demo.
ReplyDeleteActually, while total viewership generally doesn't matter, when the demo is equal, total viewership is used to break ties.
ReplyDeleteI disgaree. What matters in such cases is the age groups of the viewers that are outside of the demo, if they are between the ages 12-17, 49-52, etc. Each of these demo groups have potential advertisers too and the more viewers the show has for those demos, the more chances they would want to advertise during that show.
ReplyDeleteOne looks at the viewers when two shows tie in demo ratings. Arrow actually got a 1.1 this week with 3 mil viewers, while in preliminaries VD got a 1.0 and 2.5 mil viewers. Just wish CW would release a press release today also to see how VD and Reign did in the 18-34 demo.
ReplyDeleteooops they actually released it. Here it is:
ReplyDeleteLast night's midseason finale of THE Vampire Diaries was up 2% in total viewers (2.4M) week to week, up 8% in W18-49 (1.4/4), and flat in A18-49 (1.0/3).
THE Vampire Diaries outrated both Fox's X Factor and ABC in A18-34 (1.0/4) and W18-34 (1.4/5).
The midseason finale of REIGN was the series most watched episode since its premiere. REIGN was up 12% week to week in total viewers (1.86M), up 14% in W18-34 (0.8/2), up 13% in W18-49 (0.9/2), and even in A18-34 (0.5/2) and A18-49 (0.6/2).
why are you so hell bent on putting Tvd down?it got 1.0 in preliminaries,it may very well be adjusted up.so arrow is doing well, what's the big deal,it's a good show.tvd is 5 years old,spn is 9 years old, their ratings have been consistently good over the years.let 2 year pass and then see how arrow is doing.that would be fair comparison, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteI never say anything bad about TVD, i am only discussing its ratings. Yes TVD has delivered amazing ratings in the past. And i don't see any show in the near future scoring the ratings TVD did in the past. I think TVD, Original, SPN and Arrow are all doing a good job for the CW. I think the reason why i am more impressed with Arrow is they actually managed to get a male skewing show, that is outperforming even the other networks in the male 18-34 demos. But TVD is the reigning champion in w18-34 department and they do very good in they perspective demos.
ReplyDeleteeven i have to say, last year arrow was average in terms of quality imo but this year, their writing is really good, quality has considerably improved.credit has to be given where it's due!! it's a good year for cw!!
ReplyDeleteYou must be happy! :) 2.7 is great!
ReplyDeleteI think you might want to stop pulling rabbits out of your hat! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about two shows that have the same demo but one has more viewers than the other. You are bringing up two shows that have completely different demos. I hope you realize these situations are not the same.
ReplyDeleteyes i realize but even if arrow has better total audience overall,it doesn't matter while considering a show's renewal prospect-that's all.not that both shows are in danger!!they are certain for renewal so this debate is ultimately futile and meaningless.
ReplyDeleteOverall viewers don't matter in terms of the show's success, true, but since TVD and Arrow tied in the demo this week, Sparky used the overall numbers as a tie-breaker to see which show was higher-rated on the whole. It was not meant as a slight against TVD, as stated here the 18-49 demo - W18-34 in particular - is what counts, and TVD is a powerhouse in that area.
ReplyDeleteViewers don't matter.
ReplyDeleteThe advertisers love the 18-34 demo more and will pay more money for it then the 18-49. And here Scandal scored big in the w18-34 demo (it got a 4.5, while Castle got 1.7 on its last airing in the w 18-34 demo.). Heck Scandal was the number one show in the w18-34 demo, 2nd was TBBT with 4.0.
