Cas didn't get "his" grace back. As usual, Buckner & Ross-Lemin doesn't give a shit about canon because now, apparently, an angel can take in anyone's grace... by the mouth... ??? ? Okay and what's with the blue eyes thing like i'm so confused
oh i'm going back to watch my beloved season 4 i think
The ending, definitely. I cried when Dean was softly calling Kevin's name, hoping he would answer but he didnt. We got the One Perfect Tear! A++ acting by Jensen.
I also laughed and enjoyed the scene where Cas was trying to pray and he kept ending up in all these positions and wondering how humans can put up with it! ;)
I don't think it messes with the canon as we have never seen a human angel kill another angel like that. All this episode shows is an angel without grace being able to steal another angel's grace through the neck like Metatron's stole Cas's. Although it seems to be a convenience they are just using for plot, I personally don't mind. As with Anna the grace goes in through the mouth/nose.
It does mess with canon though, as usual when Buckner & Ross-Leming are writing an episode. If an angel can just suck the grace out of another one, then why didn't Cas do that back in season 6 with Raphael? Angels have been cut before, their grace glowing out of their bodies draining them of energy, but it doesn't float/leak out. But hey, whatever, they've already screwed over and retconned the shit out of this show so who even cares at this point.
I really enjoyed all the scenes with Metatron and Sam/Gadreel. The writing and acting were spot-on. Gadreel tricking Dean at the end also had me on the edge of my seat.
But with Raphael, Cas was an angel. My point is that with this episode he is a human, the only other situation that has been similar in the shows history was Anna but she never killed another angel as a human. So from my perspective the shows canon is still intact.
Dean says goodbye to Kevin :( Dean thinks he telling Sam the truth was amazing. Metraton and Gadreel scenes were great even though Gadreel went darkside. It was an amazing eoisode overall.
Not only did Cas not get his grace back -- as in he got another angel's, thus he should now be that angel, but the canon that is messed with was established in Season 4 when Anna got her actual grace back and her human body exploded. The writers simply wrote around it by having Anna back in her same body explaining that she called in some favors to get her body back even though it was destroyed. Cas getting the other angel's grace should have exploded his body, causing him to seek another vessel; however, we can't get rid of Misha, thus we simply toss canon out the window. While I'm glad Cas got some mojo back, once again these writers, and the writing as a whole, found themselves in a corner and did a poor job of getting out of it.
Goodbye Kevin, mainly because I really didn't see it coming. Probably should have as soon as he said he gets screwed every time he trusts Dean, though....
neither of their throats were slit, which seems to be the way to extract grace as Metatron did to Cas. The explanation for Anna could be something more of the fact that it was her original grace or that she was far more powerful than Castiel is or this other angel that Cas killed was. Although I agree that most likely they forgot that detail and skipped over it for plot purposes.
Well, Castiel said it himself. He called it barbaric. I think it's akin to vampirism and cannibalism. (But remember, it's not the soul, it's just power he's eating.)
I don't think he didn't do it because he couldn't. I think he didn't do it because he felt above such things or didn't want to succumb to such a level. I think it wasn't until this moment did he feel desperate enough to do it.
It does come a bit left field, but of all the retconning they've done on this show, this isn't as bad as other things they've done.
I don't think so. I think the major reason, and I think the best reason why this hasn't shown up until now is that it really is barbaric and...just evil if you think about it. Grace seems like this holy, beautiful thing. To forcibly steal it from another angel, even if that angel is bad, seems very...disgusting.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

So many great scenes in this episode! Cas praying was the next scene on the list!

ReplyDeleteI don't think it messed with canon at all, and I do agree that season 4 has been the best year, but my favorite ep is still Swan Song from s5.
ReplyDeleteDean saying goodbye to Kevin
ReplyDeleteDean thinks he is telling Sam the truth
Cas praying
Was glad that Cas has at least gotten a little mojo back, will be interesting to see how well it works.
What about the angel from the first episode of this season, the girl that tried to kidnapp Cas and Cas killed her after the car accident.

ReplyDeleteThere were so many, but Dean says goodbye to Kevin was heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteI do. I don't remember grace looking like a demon cloud
