    Pretty fun episode! Somehow I expected more musical but I did enjoy the creativity with going between fantasy-like musical sections then where they sang as part of the actual investigation at Yang's behest.


    Yang returned! I shall miss her. I liked how we go to see Mary again when Yang passed.


    Too bad there isn't another 7 years in this show cause I would totally wait another 7 years for another musical.

    Maybe its because I haven't had a new episode of Psych in so long, or maybe it really was that good, but I was thoroughly impressed with it.
    Sad to know there will be no more Yang in the final season, but considering they will probably need their 10 episodes to tie up loose ends, killing her off now, might have been the right decision..... at least she had a notable episode for her death.
    Nice way to sneak in 1 last Jimmi Simpson as Mary appearance. Well done.

    It was awesome!! My mom who likes Psych but isn't that big a fan, says they should do musicals more often. I love it it and the storyline was good b/c I didn't figure out who the killer was until the very last. I loved having Yang back and I loved that her angel was Mary! I found it funny that when Yang said she saw a light, Gus asked if it was fire and brimstone. LOL. I am excited for the new season's guest, including Bruce Campbell & Cary Elwes.

    It was....okay....
    The one thing I feared the most was that they would just throw the musical numbers more or less unmotivated into the plot. And that's sadly exactly what they did. With a better frame device, like either it being a dream from the get go, or even better, with Shawn having a musical obsession and therefore having visions of everybody singing during the investigation, this could have worked. But everyone singing and dancing and nobody acting like this is strange...it just didn't work, even if they clarified that Shawn wrote a play at the very end. It has become more and more a problem with the show that everybody is acting like the crazy is the normal, when originally a lot of the humour was based on people actually having an "are you serious" moment when it went totally over the top, and this episode was the result of it.
    It also didn't work that Lassiter kept saying that he wouldn't sing and then he starts singing at the first opportunity. Or that Juliet suddenly asks why Shawn is singing. The whole episode was very contradictory, starting with the fact that we are somehow back to "Juliet doesn't know". Perhaps if they had aired it as mid-season finale for the last season, it would have been less distracting, but all in all, it was like a giant puzzle piece which just didn't fit.
    Concerning the singing and dancing: Shawn can sing, but is a horrible dancer. Juliet is a decent dancer, but I can do without her singing (mostly because he voice doesn't fit well with the rest of the cast). Lassiter was surprising good at both. Ying mostly worked because it fits the character to be horrible in this. Gus I expected to be used more, and they barely did.
    The musical number in itself: I LOVED "I heard it both ways", therefore it was pretty frustrating that the number was interrupted so often (but it was great that they reprised it so often, too). If they had played songs like this the whole episode, I might have been ready to forgive everything which didn't work. But after this...one forgettable song after another. And "Under Santa Barbara's sky" reminded me in the duet parts way too much of this one short number of "Once more with feeling", when the Damon sings with Buffy's sister.
    "When you making up a song" was somewhat nice, especially since it was the only number in which the choreography worked, which was overall not really inspiring.
    Oh well...I guess the cast had fun and it was a work of love, even if it didn't hit all the right notes.

    I thought it was awesome! The songs were awesome, but I have Woody's song stuck in my head and Gus' at the very end.


    I was laughing so much doing the musical episode. I think my favorite songs were 'Heard It Both Ways' and 'Shawn's Breakdown'! God, I wish I had iTunes money right now!


    I was so happy to hear Anthony Rapp sing, I've missed his voice. Plus, he was awesome as Z - I hope they bring him back! Everyone was surprising with their voices, especially Tim and Kirsten. And Mary came back?! That scene I actually gasped to see Mary standing there as Yang's 'angel'. It was funny! But, also sad to see Yang go.


    Oh, can anyone tell me who played the Inspector? I know his face but I'm so bad with names, I don't know who he is. But, I've seen him before in something!

    Anyone who did not vote Great or above honestly I don't care about you, you clearly do not appreciate anything because Psych The Musical was outstanding. Songs didn't fit into the plot (which they did) so what? The cast showed how vast their talent is! We know they could all act and now we know they can sing and dance too! It was funny, it was poignant at times, and we got to see our lead whumped by getting punched in the nose and hanged! It had a little bit of everything and saying that Psych The Musical was just ok is the biggest understatement ever. Just good is the same. Awful... you need to have your eyes and ears checked. Best episode of Psych ever!

    it was absolutely amazing. I was exhausted by the time it aired, but I made it through the whole two hours and it was so worth it. The musical aspect just put Psych's normal awesomeness onto a whole different level.

    So this episode is the 15 and 16 of the 7th season right. I though it was awesome and funny but i do have a question is Yin really dead? Like in the next season the will conform that yin is really dead which sucks cause they could of have her come up next season and had a real episode with her in it. O well thought it was great cant wait until next month Psych returns with a new season hopefully not that last but it might be,

    I thought the framing device, (that we're hearing about the case as a story being told, and told in a somewhat fantastical manner), was actually pretty clear. That storybook intro was our cue not to take anything too literally: if the characters sometimes seem to notice the singing and sometimes don't, or if the continuity seemed confused and a few things that happened seemed more than a little far-fetched, well... They did spell it out for us, there at the end: Shawn is really NOT a reliable narrator!



    (For what its worth, I also thought Roday's goofy dancing was adorable. And the cast as a whole was just plain impressive! Meanwhile, I've had "I've Heard it Both Ways" stuck in my head all day...)

    This was so wonderful! And so very much worth the wait!

    From catchy songs to shockingly good singing from the whole cast... I absolutely adored this. My hats off to every last one of them! Standing ovations, all around!

    It might (might!) have worked if Shawn HAD been the narrator in the first scene, but it was "unknown voice". What we learned later on the conclusion didn't help with everything which happened on the way (plus, I think that it is a cheap cop out to say "well, it is Shawn, everything bad in the episode is bad because he has no idea how to write a musical").
    Like I sad, "I've hard it both ways" was great...but that was one outstanding song and one great scene in a two hour special...well, make it two, the dying scene of Yang was hilarious. I also like Henry's "not gonna happen" line....but that's it. A couple of good scenes don't change the fact that the thing as a whole didn't work.

    I said Shawn as narrator made everything unreliable -- not bad! I thought all of it worked fantastically well, especially within the usual rules of 'stage musical logic,' which they definitely invoked. But hey, I'm predisposed to like musicals, while I gather they're not your thing as a rule. To each his own.

    Nope, I am actually a BIG fan of musicals. In fact, I now rewatched "Once more with feeling" in order to see a good musical episode. But in order to incorporate a musical in an episode of a TV show, I think you need a good reason WHY it is there. You can't just throw in the music however you like. In this case, it was particularly confusing, because in one scene, everyone would act as if singing and dancing is totally normal, in the next they were suddenly wondering why someone was doing it. If the complete episode had been of people randomly starting to sing and everyone acting as if it is normal it might have worked, even without a good frame device. If it had been consistent and there would have been only singing whenever Yang forced them to do so or for others in-story reasons, with everybody reacting how you react when suddenly everybody starts to sing and dance, it would have worked great, I guess. But since they kept mixing it, it was just confusing.

    See, to me, signalling from the first frame that "This is a story about Psych," rather than what /actually happens/ on Psych, gave them blanket permission to throw in as much singing and dancing and full orchestration as they wanted, when they wanted. And that's a good thing. Singing only when Yang demanded it would have left us wondering where all those other instruments came from and why there was matching choreography, and would have seriously limited the kinds of numbers they could do. Instead, we got a (stage type) musical about a case in which Yang demands singing, and people 'notice' the singing only when it's specific to the plot, (what would have 'really' happened). I truly don't see this as confusing!



    Try this: you say you actually do like musicals, yeah? Think of this as the same sub-genre as "Phantom of the Opera," "Kiss Me, Kate" or "42nd Street": there is a show within a show. SOME songs happen in-world, and the characters KNOW they are singing and dancing for an audience, and talk about doing it. (This would be like "(When You're) Making up a Song" or "Gus in the Spotlight.") The rest of the time, the singing is just part of the presentation of the story, and no one comments on it or tries to explain it. That's the world they put us in with their "Once upon A Time."



    Honestly, the only thing I saw as even slightly ambiguous was "The Breakdown," when Juliet asks Shawn why he's singing. Since she asks, I assume he 'really' did make up a song there, which would be right up Shawn's alley, but since he IS also the real narrator, he may just be /claiming/ that he made up a (pretty awesome) song right there, on the spot.... That's the fun of unreliable narrators. That ambiguity lets us decide for ourselves how much of this "really" happened. : )

    OMFG YES I DID!!!!!!!!! That had me totally freaking out lol. I also noticed that Shawn's dancing for Yang over Skype was a callback to an episode from the first season. I forget the name of the episode, but its the one with the cat. He did the exact same choreography

    I have no idea why are so intend on convincing me of liking it. Never mind that your arguments are missing the point, since in all your examples the Musicals were designed in a way that it was possible for the audience to recognize what were in-universe musical numbers and what weren't, while I was not able to do the same in this episode. And no, I don't want to decide for myself, and even if I wanted, they would have needed to establish that Shawn is the actual narrator of the story more clearly in the beginning of the episode, not the end when all is said and done.
    It was also only one problem of the episode. Like I said, other that "I heard it both ways", which was outstanding, the songs were generic at best. The same can be said about the choreography. And while I have no problem with the cast not being the best dancers and singers in the world (they were frankly better than what you'll normally find in a musical episode), I expected more from all the guest characters and background dancers.
    Look it was okay. I don't share the excitement about it, but I don't say that it was horrible from start to finish either. But it could have been so much better, on so many levels. If you want to squeal about it, go ahead.

    Well, I wasn't trying to convince you to like it. As I said before, to each his own. I was responding to the criticism that it was confusing and poorly framed, since I consider both the framing and character reactions to in-universe numbers to be clear as day, and have yet to see how any of this is confusing. (Actually, I also think harping on that distinction between what was 'in-universe' and what wasn't is kind of irrelevant, since all of it is filtered through a narrator's point of view, but hey. Agree to disagree.)

    Anyway, sorry it wasn't to your taste. I count myself lucky that it was very much to mine. Watching here, we all had an absolute blast.
