I’m so sorry guys. Life has been insane the last couple weeks. I worked all of the holiday weekend and just had a massive presentation to give for grad school – the kind that decides whether or not you get to remain a grad student – so watching my shows had to hit the back burner there for a little bit. It was Sunday afternoon by the time I was able to watch the last couple episodes so there was no hope of getting a review up before last night’s airing. I have to admit, I’m pretty bummed because there was a lot to talk about. I will sum things up in two general statements: Lana is freaking awesome and I REALLY want to keep Robbie Kay around. He’s even a better Henry!
I was very weary coming into this episode. We pretty already knew that main struggle coming in – Pan wants to recast the curse to create a new Neverland to rule over, but without the True Love safety net that existed the first time around. It just felt like a “been there, done that” plot and a sign that the writers were out of ideas. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to the idea of the reset button, but I feel like we’ve already used it in the show so it’s a bit too soon to go that particular route again.
That was all prior to watching this week’s episode. THIS is the show that OUaT could be every week if it really wanted to be. We had plot advancement, the answering and asking of questions, emotions galore. I freaking loved it. I still have a few reservations about the reset they just pulled but we’ll get to all that.
We got an assortment of scattered flashbacks throughout the episode. These didn’t really serve much in the way of plot advancement, but they showed some defining moments or gave us nice tidbits that would come in handy later on. We got to see Hook and Tink’s first meeting (where we learn the two things that Hook risks his life for), Snow fretting prior to the curse taking hold (and ultimately holding on to the hope that they would get some type of happy ending), Rumple lighting a candle for Bae on his birthday, Mary Margaret giving Henry the storybook (that MAGICALLY appeared), and Emma giving birth.
The show wasted no time in having Pan cast the curse, opting to open the show with it. Poor Felix really should have seen that move coming. I was a little surprised he didn’t put up more of a fight. While Pan is casting the curse, our merry band of heroes is gathered outside Regina’s vault discussing how to stop Pan, a move that would require Regina to destroy the curse’s scroll, and completely breaking the curse in the process. With the help of the Black Fairy’s wand (hello, suddenly important magical device we’ve never heard of!), Rumple can switch Pan and Henry back to their rightful bodies, giving Henry possession of the scroll. He warns them, though, that breaking the curse will come with a great price.
Tink, Hook, Charming, and Neal set off to the Blue Fairy’s funeral to find the wand, only to have the Shadow show up. Hook puts his life on the line (and gets saved by Charming – yay bromances!) to distract the Shadow so that Tink can use the pixie dust to fly close enough to capture him in the coconut shell again. Destroying the Shadow somehow brought the Blue Fairy back to life. In what has to be Blue’s most human moment EVER, she admits she was probably a bit uptight with the rules and assures Tink she has earned her wings back many times over. Say it with me now: AWH!
The rest of the gang is hanging at Gold’s shop, waiting on the wand. Emma and Snow have a heart-to-heart about regretting giving up their children. I absolutely loved this scene. Once Emma knew the truth about her parents, she has always acknowledged the sacrifice they made, but this is the first time I’ve really felt like she truly UNDERSTANDS the sacrifice, something that would come from really FEELING like a parent.
Rumple switches Pan and Henry back to their bodies and the gang (minus Rumple) takes off to find Henry (with an assist from Granny’s nose, no less). Rumple and Pan have another excellent confrontation/conversation. The whole concept of a teenager talking to a grown man about how much of a burden he was as an infant should be comical, but man did it work. Pan does end up getting the upper-hand, switching the magic-blocking cuff from his wrist to Rumple’s (of course he’d make himself impervious to it) and getting some kicks in before he goes off to wreak some more havoc.
Upon finding Henry, he gives the scroll to Regina. She passes out as soon as she touches it. When she comes to, she says she knows what she has to do, but Pan shows up before they can do anything. He freezes everyone he makes a play towards Belle and Neal. But Rumple shows up, says his peace, summons his shadow (who still has his dagger), and plunges said dagger into Pan and himself. We see Pan morph back into Malcom and make a plea to Rumple that they can start over and have their happy ending. Rumple reminds Malcom that villains don’t get happy endings and they vanish.
And now we enter the heart-wrenching portion of the episode. With Neal pleading to not let Rumple’s death be for nothing and Grumpy warning them the curse is closing in from all sides, Regina reveals the price of breaking the curse: she can no longer see Henry again. Breaking the curse will wipe Storybrooke out of existence, as if it never existed, sending everyone back to where they came from. Henry, of course, would be left behind as he was born in this world. Since Emma is the Savior, she can again escape the curse, and remain with Henry. I loved Emma’s desperation to stay with her family – although she still has some issues to work through, losing them is the last thing she wants. But with a push from her parents, she accepts the outcome.
Everyone gathers on the town line and has their tearful goodbyes. Henry and Regina’s was particular touching. Regina again acknowledges that, as a villain, she doesn’t get a happy ending, and Henry simply tells her that she isn’t a villain, she’s his mom. The show has really done a lot to redeem Regina over the course of the season, and we get the culmination of all their work in this scene. Regina tells Emma one last detail of her breaking the curse: since Storybrooke will never have existed, all of Emma’s memories of it will be lost as well. But, as a consolation prize of sorts, she will provide Emma and Henry with new memories, in which Emma never gave up Henry and they have lived a happy life all this time. As Emma and Henry drive off, we see Emma’s revamped memory, in which she did indeed choose to hold Henry.
The story picks up a year later in New York (at 8:15 no less). Emma and Henry are sitting down to breakfast when they hear a loud knock at the door. Emma opens it up to Hook. She doesn’t remember him, and Hooks attempt to jog her memory with a kiss only earns him a kick to the groin. He tells her that her family is in danger and implores her to remember, only to have the door slammed in his face.
Some Stray Observations:
--- Is it bad that I’m upset they were able to switch Pan and Henry back? I will really miss that kid.
--- Regina did say that they would be forbidden from returning to this world, yet Hook manages to come back. Do we think it’s a loophole, magic, or further proof that he’s not ORIGINALLY from the Enchanted Forest?
---If the storybook magically appeared in M.M.’s closet, it’s safe to assume that it could magically pop up again, yes?
And that’s all she wrote. I’ll turn this over to all of you. What did you think of the episode, and this half of the season? Is Rumple actually dead? Exactly what kind of danger have the Charmings gotten themselves into this time? Are you looking forward to the new big bad? This was our last new episode until March, so make great friends with your DVDs and You Tube clips to get you through the break. There was a lot I wanted to discuss about this half of the season as a whole, but given the length of this review already and the wait we have coming up, I’ve decided to do a midseason review/evaluation that you should keep an eye out for after the first of the year (if you’re interested of course). I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season, regardless of what you do or don’t celebrate. Catch you all in the new year!
All I'm really interested in is if that Storybrooke reset means that everyone that died there (like oh I don't know GRAHAM HUMBERT) are back alive in the Enchanted Forest? A curious thing many Graham fans noticed: even a year after Storybrooke vanished, Emma is still wearing Graham's shoelace around her wrist.
ReplyDeleteOOOOOOOHHHHH. That is an excellent question!! It would be wonderful to see Graham again. Maybe all the 50 Shades junkies would watch and give ratings a boost. It is defniitely going to be really interesting to see how this reset affects everything.
ReplyDeleteYou can't choose one moment/scene because this episode was perfect
ReplyDeleteWe'd be fools to believe that Rumple/Mr. Gold is dead, he ALWAYS has something up his sleeve. Plus there are no reports suggesting that Robert has left the show.
ReplyDeleteWe shall see. It'd be nice to have him back in the Enchanted Forst at some point, maybe. But his death obviously still happened in 'our' world, or else Emma wouldn't still be wearing the shoelace (even though she doesn't know why). This is very confusing.
ReplyDeleteOf course. Even if he died... Gandalf from "LoTR" or Aslan from "Narnia" died too, but they both resurrected.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteOk, these are my thoughts:
* of course Rumple is not gone. He will come back somehow.
* Hook's backstory may be much more complicated than simply being born in FTL and that might be the reason why he managed to come back
* I hate it that Robbie Kay is gone, the kid was amazing and could hold his own opposite Carlyle
* What happens to the people who were alive in FTL but died in real world like Rumple. his dad and Graham? If the curse is completely nulified regarding FTL residents, than we are back at square one: Rumple is still looking for Bae, his dad is still Pan in Neverland and Graham is still the Huntsman?
Great review for a great episode.
ReplyDeleteThere were a few things in this episode, however, that bothered me:
1. If I remember correctly the episode Skin Deep, the day Rumple revealed to Belle that he has/had a son was the same day she tried to break his curse. So exactly when the scene in this week's episode could have happened?
2. Why does the curse affects Neal? He wasn't in the Enchanted Forrest when it was cast and Regina didn't even know of his existance. It seems very odd to me that he would be affected by it only because he was originally from there.
AD 2. Remember how Neal reveal a Dark One's hidden wardrobe in castle in episode 3x01? Blood magic. That's why the curse affects Neal. But that is only a theory.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think about that, and it sounds like a good theory. And yet it still bothers me that we have to come up with theories like this. The writers leave way too many loopholes IMO
ReplyDeleteThis was the best episode ever. At the beginning of the show I wasn't a big fan of OUaT, but now I can't wait to see wat's coming next ! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm not even worried about his not coming back. The question is, where is he? It would make a lot of sense if he somehow wound up in Oz. Perhaps the Wicked Witch snatched him there a moment before he would have died in order to use him as a pawn in her own sinister game.
ReplyDeleteRuby's absence was very poorly handled this season. She was such an important character last year, and there was never any explanation for what the heck happened to her. You'd think they could have found some way to at least slap a band-aid on the problem. Instead, she's just gone.
ReplyDeleteIt's a reset in the sense that we again have Emma knowing nothing about the curse or about who she and her parents are. So we get to go through all that again.
ReplyDeleteYup. I fully expect to see Rumple again but WHERE we'll see him and how we'll see him are the important questions.
ReplyDeleteI think that's why they pushed the Regina/Rumple redemption stories so hard. They tried making them a bit more evil and the fans got upset so they came back to the redemption angle and gave us a (hopefully) more sinister villain in their place.
ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly the contract they came up with for her new show allowed her to film the occasional episode on OUaT. Now whether it's a case of people being bitter or scheduling conflicts who knows. But it definitely is strange seeing them turn to Granny.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words! This is one of the few shows that I don't really find myself shipping for anyone in particular or really caring about the romantic pairings so it's much easier to stay neutral. They give Lana such amazing stuff to work with but even when they don't, she still knocks it out of the park. She single - handedly makes Jared a better actor.
ReplyDeleteI took it as the place of your birth was where you got sent to. Hook honestly bothered me more than Neal since we never got a definitive idea on if he was originally from our world or an Enchanted Forest realm.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that Meghan has a more central role on another show, as she's a great actress, but I think they should have done a far better job of explaining where the heck she got to in the context of OUAT's storyline.
ReplyDeleteThere was more of a balance this time around. Both of them showed their darker sides in this story arc, but within reason and for better motives. The skills they'd picked up from a life of villainy proved to be just what the heroes needed. That's much better than the constant moral flip-flopping we saw last year.
ReplyDeleteI agree that they kind of threw her to the side with no explanation but I've gotten so used to that. They tend to throw the characters in when they need them and forget they exist when they don't.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Last season it was so back and forth and we had the Regina-bot for most of the season. But the writers definitely did a much better job this time around. I didn't need Regina to be a goody-goody. Frankly it's really boring and that's what Snow and Charming are for. But she definitely redeemed herself a bit on the karma scale.
ReplyDeleteBut that doesn't mean characters will come back from the dead.
ReplyDeleteBut it doesn't mean they won't either. We don't know yet what wiping Storybrooke out of existence means for all of them. It's doubtful, yes, but at this point, not something we can rule out.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling that despite her recent redemption, the pain of losing Henry and (allegedly) being separated from him permanently will probably keep her a little on the dark side. That's not to say she'll be evil again, but she will probably remain a fairly fierce character, especially when pitted against somebody like the Wicked Witch. On the other hand, now that she's back in the Enchanted Forest, perhaps Robin Hood will influence her in another direction and allow her to find happiness without Henry.
ReplyDeleteI really hope she'll be like a badass Gandalf :D
ReplyDeleteExactly, I'm happy for her. But Ruby had to get some closure... That's the least they could have done...
ReplyDeleteWell, at least they didn't kill her...
The curse affects Neal because he was born at the Enchanted Forrest, he could have stayed with Emma since she was just like him, I guess he didn't really want to...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it'll be explained...
That would be perfect. :)
ReplyDeleteTrue, that would have been awful.
ReplyDeleteThe Enchanted Forest, one of the writers confirmed it on Twitter (although it was pretty clear from him not having trouble with the concept of a magical Pegasus sail).
ReplyDeleteNeal (and Hook, Tink and Ariel) weren't part of the first curse, but they had been intended targets of Pan's curse, so they were included in the curse reversal that stopped both. This necessitated their returning to their world of origin.
ReplyDeleteIt was never explicitly stated. We might eventually learn in flashbacks how Rumple became aware of this, or we might just be meant to intuit that he knew the limits of his powers and that this was the only way to kill Pan.
ReplyDeleteEmma wear's his shoelace? I somehow totally blanked on that scene.... I know Gold tries to give her his jacket but she declined but then she does take his walkie talkies to use with Henry.
ReplyDeleteIt's a significant plot point on Once Upon a Time in Wonderland that the laws of magic prevent people from creating love, bringing back the dead, or changing the past. So the curse, or its reversal, can only do so much to make things like they would be if the past had been different. Not that I wouldn't love to see him again. If the writers can hand wave an explanation, so be it.
ReplyDeleteThe scene was very confusing to me. On minute it was heavily implied that he was going to lop off his hand to get the bracelet off to get his magic back so he could fight Pan but then when we see him, he's seemingly still powerless and has to resort to killing himself to kill Pan. Which also doesn't make sense why killing himself would kill Pan or why killing Pan with his dagger resulted in him dying as well since he clearly stabbed Pan - not himself - and I'm sorry but that dagger was NOT long enough to poke through and stab him as well.
ReplyDeleteI don't get why Neal and/or Hook couldn't have stepped across the town line and stayed with Emma if they wanted too. They weren't part of the original curse so they could have crossed the town line and kept their sense of selves, unlike the other peeps who would have all went back to their cursed memories. Hook and Neal might not have remembered Storybrook but Regina could have gave them new memories as well. Not saying that they both should have stayed but I don't see why it absolutely wasn't an option for one of them to remain.
ReplyDeleteGiven that they rarely leave loose ends of any kind hanging for long, perhaps we will get a flashback explaining this someday. (And it might allow Robbie Kay to return, which would be cool.)
ReplyDeleteThe writers like to bend that specific rule to their will and in order to push storylines faster forward. Yes, magic can't be used to bring people from the dead back, but after Pan's shadow was destroyed the Blue Fairy's shadow returned to her body and she came back from the dead. That was such a weak explanation if you ask me. It would've been plausible - if you can even say that about a show like OUAT - for her shadow to be destroyed together with Pan's. But oh well... I wonder how they're going to explain the reversing of the curse in detail in the upcoming episodes.
ReplyDeleteShe's been wearing his shoelace around her wrist ever since episode 1x10. It was Jen's decision. And Graham's leather jacket has been hanging in the sheriff's office ever since episode 1x08.
ReplyDeleteWe still need a flashback expanding on Aurora's backstory as well. Remember, Mulan asked "How did you come to be here in your cursed state?" and Aurora said "You're not the only one who knows something about sacrifice." As well as the more recent story of their rescuing Phillip.
ReplyDeleteWhen you belive, you don't need proof. Temporary absence of a actor/character don't bother me.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling that all of that will come to light in the second half of this season, given that we glimpsed Aurora and Phillip in the trailer. I'm not particularly invested in Aurora, Phillip, or Mulan, but I would at least like to see OUAT's full take on the Sleeping Beauty tale. Plus, a return by Maleficent would be epic.
ReplyDeleteso thats means that greg medell is alive and trap in neverland?
ReplyDeleteI have the same questions? i dint get why he stab Pan and himself in the process :S
ReplyDeleteI think the writers are pushing to fast the emma-hook thing, by letting him being the only one that came to get emma. Neal has the same chances I think coz he also travel trought other realms/worlds. I wanted emma to be with henrys father and see why might the be like, before falling for someone else. Dont get me wrong, i also love hook, but I think is to soon.
ReplyDeleteOk people, am I the only why who doesn't understand why Emma could stay? In season 2 when Storybrooke was about to be destroyed, Regina told Emma that Henry will be alone because everyone from the enchanted forest would be touched by her curse (including Emma). Now If destroying the curse is bringing everyone back to the enchanted forest why Emma is able to stay? If it doesn't concern the people that didn't come because of the curse, why did Neal, Hook and August leave, they shouldn't be able to do it... If it's about crossing the town border it's the same. Anyway, I'm not sure I'll like the second part of the seaon, I'm not a big fan of the captain Swan storyline, I just think the right guy for Emma is Neal. And I feel really heartbroken for rumpbelle, if anyone did deserve a happy ending it was Rumple. Sure he was a bad guy, but he did all of it to get his son back... Anyway, we'll maybe see him again, or I hope so...
